A fiery singer whose music encompasses both contemporary blues and Southern soul, Nellie Tiger Travis was born in the early '60s in Mound Bayou, Mississippi. Travis was primarily raised by her grandmother, who was a minister and sang in the church. Several other members of Travis' family were singers and musicians, and she began singing in church services when she was five years old. In her teens, Travis participated in beauty pageants, and was homecoming queen when she graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1979. While Travis considered a career in acting, her love of music won out, and she moved to Los Angeles in hopes of launching her career. There, Travis sang with Top 40 groups, but grew disillusioned with the politics of the music business. In 1992, she left Los Angeles for Chicago, where she thought she would be living temporarily as she looked after her ailing mother. Travis ended up staying, and in 1995 she was booked for a show at the well-known Windy City blues venue Kingston Mines. While she previously had little experience with the blues, She soon took to the music, and found a mentor in Chicago blues queen Koko Taylor. In 2000, Travis was talking with friends about how she needed a nickname; someone suggested "Tiger," saying it fit her tough but feminine personality, and the name stuck. Within a few years, Travis was a regular attraction on the Chicago blues circuit, she shared stages with some of the biggest artists on the scene (including Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Otis Clay, and Little Milton), and she was named "Entertainer of the Year" in a reader's poll by the Chicago weekly newspaper New City. In 2000, Travis released her debut album, I Got It Like That, through her Tiger Belle label; the same year, she recorded a collaborative album with Japanese guitarist Shun Kikuta, Heart and Soul. As Southern soul became a larger part of Travis' repertoire, she released 2005's Wanna Be with You, which fused Chicago blues influences with contemporary soul tropes. 2008's I'm a Woman featured a radio hit in the song "Slap Yo' Weave Off," which gained a loyal following in the South. In 2009, Travis' mentor Koko Taylor died; she performed at Taylor's funeral, and included a song written in her honor, "Queen of the Blues," on 2009's I'm in Love with a Man I Can't Stand. Travis wrote another song her honor, "Koko," which appeared on her 2011 album I'm Goin' Out Tonight. In 2013, Travis scored another Southern soul hit with "Mr. Sexy Man," which inspired a line dance popular in Southern soul venues. By this time, Travis was an established star in the blues community, performing regularly in Japan and Europe as well as the United States. 2014 saw the release of the collection Nellie Sings the Blues. ~Mark Deming

09. Strange Feelings (6:33)
10. One Sided Love Affair (3:10)
11. Guilty (4:53)

Mr. Keith Little calls himself “The Cincinnati Blues Man,” which is a hard title to dispute since he works the blues scene in the Queen City, and he has been performing for over five decades. During that time, he has recorded a handful of soulful blues albums, including his recent Soul Santa, which is a real hoot. Keith has also ingrained himself into the local blues community, with heavy involvement in the Cincy Blues Society (former president) and the Performers’ Alliance for Charity (former chief coordinator). Little also had ventured into the video world, as writer and producer of a Cincinnati blues and jazz video documentary, Thanks for My Flowers, and as host and producer of his own TV show, “Mr. Little’s Hangout” WBQC, which used to air on a local tv station.

Keith’s latest release, Plum Crazy, is a cool set of ten original tunes and one cover that was recorded at Slaughter House Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. Keith used a full band for this project, including a tight horn section, but there are no details of the musicians who participated, and Mr. Little was not able to be reached to get these details. This is a shame, as these folks definitely deserve a shout-out for the fine work they did. One guest artist did get props for her participation, and that would be Chicago’s Nellie “Tiger” Travis who posted some awesome vocals on the title track courtesy of Joy Ride Studio in the Windy City.

Little is a singer and songwriter, and Plum Crazy gives the listener a good idea of what he is capable of. His baritone vocals are pleasingly soulful, and at times he lapses into a spoken word mode, which is eerily reminiscent of Barry White. This is exactly what the opener “I Can Deal with It,” delivers, and on this upbeat funky blues tune his vocals are accompanied by tight horns and brief guitar and keyboard solos. His style does well with the message of the lyrics, which explain that he can help out his lady with whatever “problems” she has.

Up next, the listener gets a real treat with the title track, “Plum Crazy,” which is a bawdy blues revue with oodles of innuendo. This uptempo track has a popping bassline and tight horns, and the sultry vocals of Nellie Travis which work so well with Little’s voice. Nellie is a true treasure of the Chicago blues scene: a protégé to the late Koko Taylor who has made her own place in the blues as a worldwide blues phenomenon and festival headliner.

From there, the album uses blues, R&B and jazz to explore all the problems that can happen with relationships, and it seems like in Little’s opinion the things that go wrong are always the woman’s fault. In “The Tables Have Turned,” he is saddled with a woman who does not love him anymore. “Letter to My Wife” is a laundry list of things that he does not like about her and her friends. And “Strange Feelings” describes the feeling of a man who thinks that his girl is steeping out on him. You probably get the picture.

By the way, there is one cover tune on this album, Johnny Taylor’s “Just Because,” from 1976. This R&B song has softer edges than the rest of the playlist, and this provides a cool break in the middle of the album. That being said, Mr. Keith Little’s version is still a little edgier than the original but leaving out the synthesizers for this re-do was a definitely a wise choice.

Plum Crazy is a fun piece of local blues from Mr. Keith Little, and he has some samples of it on his website if you want to hear his music for yourself. He does not have any upcoming shows listed, but judging from the disc, his live show would probably be a good time too! ~Rex Bartholomew

Nellie “Tiger” Travis couldn’t be more destined to sing the blues. She was born deep in the delta of Mississippi in the early 60′s. As in most small towns, the church was a main focal point and Nellie grew up singing gospel music.

Since then, Nellie has come a long way and in November 2009 was crowned the New Queen Of The Blues for Chicago by Bluesman and WVON radio personality, Purvis Spann who previously had bestowed that honor on Ms. KoKo Taylor the original Queen. KoKo was a mentor and friend to Nellie, and when she passed in early 2009, Nellie used her songwriting skills to write and record a tribute song to her friend Ms. KoKo Taylor titled “KoKo” (Queen Of The Blues). This soulful tune was also performed and used to eulogize Koko as part of her last rites and is on one of Nellie’s latest albums, Nellie Sings The Blues.

Today, Nellie has one of the tightest Chicago Blues bands found anywhere in the world comprised of the best musicians from Chicago’s Blues scene.
