I became intrigued by Freddie Robinson from hearing him play with John Mayall. He was on the Jazz Blues Fusion album (along with Clifford Solomon and Blue Mitchell), as well as the Movin On and Ten Years Are Gone albums. He was a wonderful guitarist and clearly an equally wonderful soul. The only album I could find back then was At the Drive In, which has never been put on CD and, in fact, is not even listed on Amazon. But it had two great cuts, the title song and Bluesology, both of which are on this compilation. In Bluesology Freddie takes you on a six minute guided tour of the real blues clubs of Chicago and, using other musicians, presents examples of down home blues mixed into the narrative. That cut was the last song on side 1 of that album, but the people at Ace have wisely put it first on this CD because it is simply unique and outstanding. At the Drive In is a great song too because Freddie sings/talks about taking his girlfriend to the drive in and she starts to talk about leaving him and he says something like "I put my head into my popcorn and pretended I didn't hear what she said." It takes a special person to come up with stuff like that! So I am looking forward to getting this CD and seeing what else Freddie did!
