Over the course of his phenomenal career in music, Mike Finnigan was known primarily as a sideman, the acknowledged master of the Hammond B3 organ as heard on his work with Jimi Hendrix, Stephen Stills, CSNY, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker and many, many other household names. The fact is that apart from his instrumental virtuosity, he was a gifted vocalist, a magnificent blues singer in his own right.

Now, more than four years after his passing comes the eponymous ‘Mike Finnigan’ album, his final musical will and testament that features appearances by Stephen Stills, Smokey Robinson, Joe Bonamassa and son, Kelly Finnigan, as well as a who’s who of the key players on the LA recording scene. In truth, no record has ever properly showcased Finnigan’s mastery of the blues genre like this musical tour-de-force. Since the early 1990's, the Phantom Blues band has been touring the world as the two-time Grammy winning band for Taj Mahal, and appearing as a world-class all-star band on their own. The band members have a long list of credits as touring artists and top-call studio musicians for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and many more.

The Phantom Blues Band is comprised of Tony Braunagel (drums), Mike Finnigan (keyboards & vocals), Larry Fulcher (bass & vocals) Johnny Lee Schell (guitar & vocals), Joe Sublet (saxophones). Les Lovitt (trumpet), plus many all-star guest musicians.

The band credits their combined influences for the compositions and song selections on this album: 'We all grew up on great songs from the late 50's on, and extended our library of influences fro the Great American Songbook, including the roots of the Blues.'

Alastair Greene is a man on a mission these days. He wants to bring his unique blend of rock and blues to fans old and new, worldwide. Greene spent seven years with Alan Parsons contributing his vocal and guitar coloring to that incredibly unique and inviting sound, known to millions. Recently, he has played the Chicago Blues Festival as well as the Big Blues Bender, and he is no stranger to performing with top-tier talent including Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Walter Trout, and so many more.

Greene has decided to forge a new path and has ventured out on his own. Dream Train is his invitation to folks to come and celebrate his music. The album features 13 tracks and hits the street on Rip Cat Records on October 20th. Personnel is Alastair Greene on guitar and vocals, Jim Rankin on bass, and Austin Beede on drums. Several guests lend their talent here as well including Walter Trout, Debbie Davies, Mike Zito, Mike Finnigan, and Dennis Grueling.

Dream Train runs about 55 minutes, and the 13 tracks cover a wide gamut of material. We enjoyed the title track, which is reminiscent of our favorite ’70s highway-rolling rock. “Nome Zayne” is a Billy Gibbons ditty performed here with a whole lot of spunk, and it sounds fabulously chunky! Walter Trout lends a hand on “Another Lie, ” and this cut scratches that blues itch that lives deep down inside all of us. If you enjoy rockin’ blues that tips a hat to the ’70s even as it lives firmly in the present, then Dream Train is for you. Don’t miss this train; you’ll be glad you climbed aboard.

The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise is one of those excursions on which a batch of musicians are put on a cruise ship with their fans for a few days of playing on the high seas, which makes it an ideal occasion for a live album packed with guests. Joe Louis Walker, appearing with his regular backup band (Linwood Taylor on second guitar, Kevin Burton on keyboards, Henry Oden on bass, and Jeff Minnieweather on drums), welcomes 18 guests on these 11 tracks, most prominent among them Johnny Winter and Duke Robillard.

In fact, his interactions with such fellow guitarists are among the high points on the disc. Walker revisits his own repertoire, dating back to his debut album, Cold Is the Night ("Ten More Shows to Play") and its follow-up, The Gift ("747"), along with tracks from his last couple of records. His is an electric blues sound that, while rooted in tradition, also came along after such blues-rock acts as the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream, and there are occasional echoes of that style. It may be that, given the circumstances, the players were inclined to let themselves go a bit more than usual; after all, nobody had to worry about driving home.

In any case, the arrangements can be stretched out to the point of being a little loose and ragged, and the singing, while enthusiastic, can be too. Most of that singing is done by Walker himself, and it's possible that he makes a point in a sleeve note of saying the album has no overdubs or fixes as a way of explaining the occasional croakiness in his voice. Such imperfections are more than offset, however, by the enthusiasm with which everybody plays. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

This CD, produced by renowned producer and drummer Tony Braunagel, was recorded at Ultratone Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Deb and guitar player Allen James travelled to Los Angeles in February 2015 to record the tracks with an all star studio line-up including Johnny Lee Schell, engineering and slide guitar, Mike Finnigan on keyboards, Reggie McBride on bass, Braunagel on drums and James on guitar. This group of LA musicians have recorded and toured with performers such as Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal so it was a truly wonderful experience to play with and learn from each one.

It’s been almost 5 years since Deb’s last CD, “Tell It Like It Is” was released. Shortly after this release, Deb became a mom to her now 4 year old son Elijah. The experience of being a new mom has had a direct impact on her writing and focus in her life. The songs from “Sweet Soul” were written during an overall sweet and rich phase of life. Deb worked with James and Chris Arms (who produced Deb’s last 3 CD’s) to write the original material and with producer Braunagel to find some gems written by others that fit the vibe as well. The mood of this blues, soul, roots CD is upbeat, rockin, funky and fun and explores the theme of love and family with an honest and at times humorous view into both its joys and challenges. This includes the experience of loving a child or partner, the connection and sweetness you feel when you slow down and just be present with ones you love, the pain and difficulty of letting go of a family member, the ups and downs of living with someone, the inner tension about balancing family and career, the energy it takes to keep things running to do a lot of different things in life.

Spacious arrangements of bluesy songs characterize Tell It Like It Is, suiting the sultry voice of Deb Callahan well. The Philadelphia singer is particularly fine on the soulful “Long Suffering Woman” and turns in equally superb performances on the rocking “Gonna Get There”, the swampy “I got it bad” and the old time jazz of “Sweet Words.” She over reaches on the lone cover (Dylan’s Cold Irons Bound” doesn’t work) but ”In My Bones”, “Old Ways” and “I Got It Bad” are fine ringers for “real” blues. Jason Crosby’s gospelized piano and organ turn “I Fell The Spirit” into a revivial tent-wrecker and the discs high point, and Allen James is MVP for his clean guitar work across the CD. ~Tom Hyslop
