Since 1985, when Johnny Rawls released his first solo album, the Mississippi native has commanded a genre he’s largely been credited for inventing. On Make Them Dance, Rawls delivers another generous helping of the soul blues that he’s been refining for more than 50 years, beginning with his early work supporting ZZ Hill, Little Johnny Taylor, and Joe Tex. “My songs are one foot in the past and one foot in the future,” Rawls told writer Michael Liminios in 2017, a fitting way to describe a recipe rooted in ‘60s soul but laced with contemporary trappings.

The singer and guitarist is joined here by more than a dozen musicians, including the horn players that help define his sound; on the lead-off track, “So Cold,” they carry the riff of mid-tempo heartbreak tune and serve as a majestic counterpart to Rawls’ heartfelt vocals. It’s followed by the ballad, “Dreams Of You,” one of six tracks Rawls wrote or co-wrote for the album, underscoring the wealth of material he has contributed to the blues. Once again, the horn section kicks off the tune, as if heralding Rawls’ arrival. The song sounds familiar the first time you hear it, but Rawls invokes the depth of passion that makes you feel that longing for lost love.

“Costs Too Much,” the sole tune Rawls wrote on his own without collaborators, is among the album’s standout cuts. The playful lyrics – suggesting that you need a lot of money to court a woman – will never go out of style. Rawls’ spoken-word section carries the fun all the way through the fadeout. Other highlights include “Rip Off The Bandage,” which features some strong lead guitar work from Will McFarlane, and “Swimming With The Sharks,” a song about a woman courting love and danger.

The late Jim Gaines, who produced several albums for Rawls, knew how to provide the best possible framework for Rawls, crafting a sound with punchy horns and uncluttered arrangements, as he did for Make Them Dance. Gaines, who died in November 2024, was widely known in the rock world for working with marquee names like Carlos Santana, Steve Miller, and Huey Lewis. But his love of the blues stretched far beyond his acclaimed work with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Soul and bluesman Johnny Rawls, one of the last of the original deep soul singers, is back where he belongs, returning to Catfood Records after a rather inexplicable six-year absence. From 2008 through 2017 Rawls issued a strong string of eight albums on the label. Three of them made Downbeat magazine’s Critics Choice Best of the Year List. Now, with Walking Heart Attack Rawls taps into that winning formula – writing songs with label head Bob Trenchard, recording with The Rays, a terrific band for four horns and two background singers; and laying down the tracks at Trenchard’s favorite studio, the Sonic Ranch, near El Paso, TX. Rawls produced and Grammy-winning Jim Gaines mixed at his studio near Memphis, TN. These ten tracks include originals from Rawls, Trenchard, co-writes between the two, one by label mate and outstanding songwriter Derrick Procell, and some classics, one of which will probably surprise you.

This second CD from singer-guitarist Johnny Rawls is a great listen, full of soul-tinged blues mixed with 1990s songwriting. The songs are evocative; the title track transports the listener to a smoke-filled Southern bar. Ballads like "It's All in the Game" and "You Got Me Going Through Changes" have enough of an edge that their soft style is never ingratiating or boring, and Rawls's rich, smooth voice is steady throughout. His backing band is equally impressive, with a rhythm section that never misses a beat and horns that provide just the right amount of emphasis without becoming overwhelming. ~Genevieve Williams

Johnny Rawls is a soul blues legend. In fact, the term “soul blues” was invented to describe his music. With a career spanning more than 50 years, he’s done it all. He’s an internationally recognized recording artist, music producer, and songwriter who tours extensively throughout North America and overseas.

The Blues Music Awards, Blues Blast Awards, Living Blues Awards, and the W. C. Handy Awards have all acknowledged Johnny with multiple awards and nominations, including Soul Blues Album of the Year and Soul Blues Artist of the Year. Living Blues Magazine described him as a “soul-blues renaissance man” when he was featured on the cover in 2002. Johnny is honored to be mentioned on two markers along the Mississippi Blues Trail – one in Hattiesburg, MS marking the Hi-Hat Club, and another in Rocklin ME marking the migration of blues from Mississippi to Maine.

Born in Columbia, Mississippi in 1951, Johnny grew up in Purvis (near Hattiesburg) and Gulfport. Johnny’s interest in music began in early childhood. He started out playing clarinet in the school band when he was in 5th grade. Over the next couple of years, he graduated to saxophone, trumpet and other instruments. Johnny became interested in guitar when he heard his grandfather playing one Christmas morning and by age 13 was playing guitar seriously. Johnny’s high school band teacher had a professional band that backed touring soul artists and asked Johnny to join his band as a saxophone player. This began Johnny’s professional career, and at age 15, he was backing artists including ZZ Hill, Little Johnny Taylor, Joe Tex, and The Sweet Inspirations on their tours in the Southeast. In the mid-1970s, Johnny became the band director for soul singer O.V. Wright, and toured with O.V. until his death in 1980. Wright’s band, under Johnny’s leadership, continued to perform as the Ace of Spades band for several years. Then, Johnny became the band director for Little Johnny Taylor.

In 1985, Johnny began touring as a solo artist and made his first solo recording. A prolific songwriter, hundreds of Johnny’s songs have been recorded. He has released more than 15 albums since his debut solo album, Here We Go, in 1996 on JSP Records. In the late 1990’s Johnny worked as an arranger and record producer for JSP. Johnny has released albums under various labels, including JSP, Catfood Records, Third Street Cigar Records, and his own label Deep South Soul, which he created in 2002.

The Blues Music Awards (and its predecessor, the W.C. Handy Awards) frequently recognize Johnny’s work. To date, ten of Johnny’s albums have been nominated for Soul Blues Album of the Year, with “I’m Still Around” winning in 2019 and “Ace of Spades” winning in 2010. Johnny has been nominated for Soul Blues Male Artist eleven times, and received one nomination for Song of the Year. Roots Music Report declared Johnny’s 2017 release, “Waiting for the Train,” one of the top 50 blues albums of the year. Johnny also has multiple nominations/awards from Blues Blast Magazine and Living Blues Magazine.

With his 2018 release, “I’m Still Around,” Johnny returned to his roots in Mississippi Soul Blues. All the songs on this album were written and arranged by Johnny, and reflect his favorite subjects – falling in and out of love, making love, and enjoying and being thankful for life. Johnny is extremely proud to have won the Soul Blues Album of the year at the 2019 BMAs for this release.

A true “road warrior,” Johnny tours extensively throughout the US, and internationally, playing approximately 200 dates every year. He’s performed at major blues festivals, including the Chicago Blues Festival and the Waterfront Blues Festival multiple times. Whether he’s playing in a small intimate club or at a large blues festival, Johnny always delivers a high-energy show to the delight of audiences everywhere.

‘Live in Europe’ is Rawl’s 20th release. He chose one of the world’s best backing bands around today: The Özdemirs. (pronounced ð?/ 'œzd?mirz). A German trio of Turkish decent, composed of Erkan on bass and his sons Kenan on guitar and Levent on drums. They were then joined by Alberto Marsico from Italy, who is one of today’s most gifted Hammond organ players. Together, these great musicians played a tour in Europe in March, 2019. As drummer Levent Özdemir is also a skilled recording engineer, the decision to record the shows came instinctively.

So you’re listening to a live concert, which took place at the famous Bischofsmühle in Hildesheim, Germany. Added to this album is “Stormy Monday”, which was recorded at a concert in Vejle, Denmark. The quintet also stopped by Heyman Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark to record the homage “I miss Otis Clay” in just one take. The result is an extraordinary soul-blues album, because every single musician knows exactly how to groove and to be a servant to the song. No one needs to push themselves to the front, every single note fits into the overall work of art. I bet, within a few years, people will listen to this recording and claim: “They don’t make them like this anymore!”.

Beautifully atmospheric and cool, this album encapsulates Johnny Rawls' huge experience of playing guitar for Little Johnny Taylor, ZZ Hill, O.V. Wright, and many others. Rawls is a first-rate singer, songwriter (he co-wrote all the songs on this album) and guitarist. Look for a weak track; you won't find one. There are guest appearances by Phil Guy (Buddy's brother), Eddie Kirkland, and Johnny's daughter Destini who has a classy voice. The musicianship throughout is superb. Apart from Johnny himself there's Jamie Finegan's fantastic trumpet and Jason Arnold's consistent drums. Soulful blues at its best.

From The Soul is a club format created by the Top Dogs band with the intention to introduce US artists working in the soul blues tradition to Swedish audiences. The idea was to arrange a series of tours, each featuring a new performer backed up by Top Dogs. When considering which artist to ask, we wanted to focus on the vocal performance and a strong stage presence, the working principle being that blues, first and foremost, is about a singer telling a story. We also wanted to emphasize the soul element, to make the band horn-driven rather then guitar-based.

Johnny Rawls won Most Outstanding Blues Singer in the 21st Annual Living Blues Critics’ Poll announced August 7, 2014. Remembering O.V., by Johnny Rawls with special guest Otis Clay, was selected Southern Soul Album of the Year. It was the third time Johnny has won Southern Soul Album of the Year.

Johnny Rawls’ and Otis Clay’s new album Soul Brothers was just released. Otis is a member of the Blues Hall of Fame and has received Grammy nominations along with many Blues Music Awards nominations. Between Johnny and Otis, they have over 20 Blues Music Award nominations.

Johnny Rawls was O.V. Wright's band leader for five years while Johnny was still in his 20s. He kept the band together after the great singer's death, opening for and backing Little Johnny Taylor and others before starting his own solo career. Otis Clay, who recorded at the same studio in Memphis and was on the same label as O. V. Wright, appears as a guest artist. Otis was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame at the 2013 Blues Music Awards. His last four albums have all made top ten for radio play on blues charts with Red Cadillac reaching #1. Notes: Super Chikan, born James Louis Johnson, was one of the more acclaimed emerging blues performers of the late '90s. His small-combo, good-humored blues has a funky touch. As an instrumentalist, he's distinguished not so much by his style as his equipment: his "Chicantars" are constructed with flattened gas can bodies. Super Chikan worked as a cab driver, truck driver, and tractor driver until becoming a full-time musician in his forties, basing himself in Clarksdale, MS.

As far as debuts go, the one from James "Super Chikan" Johnson is one of the most auspicious and accomplished of modern times. Recorded in Clarksdale, MS - about as close to a home as blues has - it covers the bases, from the sophisticated soulful swing of "Crystal Ball Eyes" to the funk of "Super Chikan Strut" and the Mississippi pride of "Down in the Delta" (albeit with a bayou rhythm). Unlike so many bluesmen, however, Super Chikan doesn't always take himself too seriously - he's not averse to crowing like a rooster, or throwing in a self-deprecatory chicken scratch on the guitar, or the overbearing mama of "Mama & the Chillen." In addition to being a very solid, occasionally inspired, writer (as on the soul "service" history of "Captain Love Juice"), he's a very decent vocalist, and a guitarist who tends to hide his light under a bushel, rarely unleashing his talents, which is a shame, because the ability is there. When he does get (semi-) properly serious, on the slow-jam "Bleeding From the Heart," he shows himself following classic footsteps, a Chicago wail tempered by a Delta heart that simply oozes the blues in every note and syllable. More than simply a novelty act, Super Chikan is part of the great lineage of American blues music, and proof that the blues is very much still alive and kicking - thankfully.
