Since the early 80s Mick Clarke and his band have toured regularly in Europe, Asia and the USA. Praised for his fiery "straight from the wood" guitar sound, Mick is the winner of the Artist Aloud Awards "Best International Act". Later tours have included Italy, India, Bosnia and an appearance at Sweden Rock Festival in June 2018. Mick began his career with Killing Floor, a part of the British blues boom of the late 1960s. The band backed Texas blues guitar star Freddie King and toured with legends Howlin' Wolf, Otis Spann and Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. Two albums were released - the first, "Killing Floor" is one of Classic Rock Magazines 20 greatest British blues albums 1967-1970. In 2003 Killing Floor reformed for recording and tour projects, and recent live work has included several European blues and rock festivals.

The Mick Clarke Band originally started working around the London area in the early 80s, but quickly received offers of work from mainland Europe and the United States. Early festival appearances such as the Belgium R&B Festival in Peer confirmed their appeal for continental audiences, while the US tours established a world wide reputation for the band. Mick's first solo album "Looking For Trouble" came out on the Italian label Appaloosa in the early 80s and sold well. More albums quickly followed on Appaloosa and then the German label Taxim and Mick's US label Burnside. Recent releases have been on the Rockfold label, recorded by Mick at his own Rockfold Studio in Surrey, England.

Mick Clarke first attracted attention in 1968, playing guitar in the South London-based Killing Floor with Bill Thorndycraft (vocals/harmonica). They made two well-received albums, Killing Floor in 1969 and Out of Uranus the following year. Killing Floor played in London and elsewhere in the U.K., backing American bluesman Freddie King, and also jammed with other visitors, including Howlin' Wolf. In mid-1972 Killing Floor folded, but Clarke played with Daddy Longlegs before forming his own band, Salt, in the mid-'70s, recording the rare EP All Wired Up in 1978.

After a spell in the United States, Clarke returned to the U.K. at the start of the '80s to form the Mick Clarke Band. For the next two decades, the group worked extensively, touring the U.K. and Europe, receiving critical acclaim for their live shows and albums. Critics and audiences in the U.S. also reacted very favorably to the band. In 2005, the lineup included drummer Chris Sharley (drums, ex-Sassafras), Dave Rea (bass), and Dave Lennox (keyboards). Among other musicians who have worked with Clarke over the years are keyboard player Peter Terry; bass players Mick Phillips, Len Davies, Ian Ellis, Eddie Masters, and Russell Prett; blues harpists Stevie Smith, Dave Newman, and Mark Feltham; and drummers Ron Berg, Slash, Mike Hirsh, and Wilgar Campbell. An important part of the repertoire of Clarke's bands are his own compositions, which include "Murderers' Home," "Cheap," "Walking in the Dark," "The Killingest Place," "Second Hand Dream," and "New Star Over Texas." ~TiVo Staff

Mick Clarke - Singles

Album: Singles
Size: 90,5 MB
Time: 38:57
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2024
Styles: Rock/Blues-rock

1. Susie Q (2:42)
2. Keeper Of The Fire (4:01)
3. Heartbeat (2:44)
4. Louie Louie (3:40)
5. Night And Day (3:56)
6. Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart (4:02)
7. Freight Train (3:11)
8. Stupid Cupid (2:33)
9. Just Dropped In (4:13)
10. Cover Me (3:29)
11. One More Time (4:22)

Here's a compilation of some of my favourite single releases from the last couple of years, plus the brand new 'Susie Q'. I love the original Susie Q by Dale Hawkins with the stunning guitar solo by James Burton. I've tried to keep some of that magic in a (slightly) updated rock style. Keeper of the Fire is a song from a favourite old album by Poco.. never off the turntable back in the day. Heartbeat is of course the Buddy Holly song played in a rocked up style - it had to be done.

Louie Louie has been a popular track since its release - I tried to keep some of the Kingsmen's spontaneity - it's definitely rough enough. Night and Day. Why not? Great song by Cole Porter which boogies up nicely with the Epiphone Sheraton adding some punctuation. Something's Gotten hold of my Heart is an odd one. I took the old Gene Pitney ballad and re-imagined it in a kind of 60s disco style with some Jeff Beck inspired soloing. I like it a lot and I'm happy to see that it is still on rotation the Sirius XM Covers Channel.

Freight Train - a great old song by Elizabeth Cotten, which was a Skiffle hit in the UK back in the 50s, with different lyrics and whistling involved. I've gone back to the original. Stupid Cupid probably seems an odd choice if you're used to the Connie Francis original, but I think it scrubbs up well as a bluesy rocker. Written by Neil Sedaka. Just Dropped In was featured in the cult film 'The Big Lebowski'. My version was released in January 2024 and has already done nearly half a million streams over on Pandora in the US so I'm pleased. And still going great guns - nice to get something right!

I always liked Bruce's Cover Me and I think it works well as a blues rocker. And to round off the album, my recent release One More Time - a Latin Blues jam which I like a lot. I hope you enjoy my selection. It's all blues - honest! /Mick Clarke

Mick Clarke first attracted attention in 1968, playing guitar in the south London-based duo Killing Floor with Bill Thorndycraft (vocals/harmonica). For the next two decades the band worked extensively, touring the U.K. and Europe, receiving critical acclaim for their live shows and albums. Critics and audiences in the U.S. also reacted very favorably to the band. In 2005 the band included drummer Chris Sharley (drums, ex-Sassafras), Dave Rea (bass), and Dave Lennox (keyboards). Among other musicians who have worked with Clarke over the years are keyboard player Peter Terry; bass players Mick Phillips, Len Davies, Ian Ellis, Eddie Masters, and Russell Prett; blues harpists Stevie Smith, Dave Newman and Mark Feltham; and drummers Ron Berg, Slash, Mike Hirsh, and Wilgar Campbell. An important part of the repertoire of Clarke's bands are his own compositions, which include "Murderers' Home," "Cheap," "Walking in the Dark," "The Killingest Place," "Second Hand Dream," and "New Star Over Texas."

Here's the MC Band live in Portland Oregon, way back in 1987 - Saturday night, 7th February.

The band includes Rod De'Ath on drums - he'd finished his six year stint with the Rory Gallagher Band and joined me on a couple of my US tours in the late 80s. On bass is Emerson Zachery Junior, aka Scott Free, but generally known as Zack. On keyboards is Dave Deaz.

The venue was a club called 13 Grand.. located at 13 Southeast Grand Avenue in Portland Oregon - the Rose City. It was run by Carl and his wife Katy - they had always made us welcome at their original venue, the Dublin Pub, and took us with them to the larger, more central, 13 Grand. As far as I know the place never closed, and there was always music going on - the breakfast gig, the lunchtime bands. We'd play three one hour sets from about 9 pm to 1.30.

This Saturday night we were recorded by our friend Dale Christensen - you can hear him shouting encouragement - although the audience was not exactly reticent. They were mainly a dancing crowd, but as you can tell here, they were really listening as well.

I've got the entire gig on cassette tape, but have picked out six tracks as being representative of the evening. Of course the sound quality is less than perfect, but I've sharpened it up as much as possible, and I thank Dale for making the recording at all. Mainly blues standards, with a couple of MC rockers thrown in. Mainly up tempo, with a slow blues here and there so as, as Alexis Korner once put it, the band can get its breath back. Opening track here is Elmore's "It Hurts Me Too" - irreverently known on the South London circuit as "It Hurts My Toe". The Gibson sounding nice through an American Marshall amp which I was able to get hold of, although the photos I have show my old Peavey. I don't know .. maybe a different trip.

Then into one of mine - the old SALT stalwart "Full Moon Boogie". Rod knew how to boogie, and there's great interplay with Zack. And then.. "Black Magic Woman". This has never been in regular set, but I found it was perfect for those long three set club dates. Just right for the last set when everyone was settling down and you could just get into a nice groove and play those fabulous Peter Green guitar lines. A pure pleasure.

I always liked to do a version of Elmore's Madison Blues on these gigs. I was actually staying at a friend's house on S.E. Madison, and my wife is Lindy Lou.. or Linda if you want to be formal. She would have been there on the night - hopefully dancing with one of our friends. Plus the fact that people knew the song from the George Thorogood version, so the moment they recognised it they'd be up on the floor and rockin'. So here it is, at full throttle, with my early attempts at doing the showy off flash bit in the middle. All good.

Muddy's "19 Years Old" was my slow blues of choice for a while. Here it is with a fiery solo - messy but real. And finally, the encore "Nothin' but a Fool".

This is introduced by Carl, who was always effusive in his praise. He was a very nice man and I'm glad to include a little of his warm tones on this record. We rip into "Nothin' but a Fool" from my second album "Rock Me" with surprising energy considering it was the end of a three hour gig - again it's messy but it rocks. And no, it wasn't written about anybody - no hidden messages - just a made up rock'n'roll song.

Carl and Rod De'Ath are sadly no longer with us. Myself, Lindy Lou, Zack and Dale are all alive and well. I don't know where Dave is, but I thank him for doing a good solid job on these gigs - always easy to work with. Our agent Steve Hettum also passed - we wouldn't have been there at all without him. Anyway this is a nice record of fun times back in the Rose City, rockin' it up on a Saturday night on S.E. Grand Avenue.
