As a follow up to his well-revered holiday album Hi-Fi Christmas Guitar, Joel Paterson will release a collection of vintage instrumental, guitar-centric covers of songs from the Beatles' catalog, entitled Let It Be Guitar! Joel Paterson Plays The Beatles. The album - out on September 20th - features the guitarist's signature blend of vintage jazz, exotica, blues, rockabilly, western swing and country, and uses classic Beatles songs as a sonic template for the mid-century musical journey. The album's pre-order link is live on both Joel Paterson's and Bloodshot Records' sites. In addition to the announcement, a sneak-peak stream of the song "Michelle" was launched today via the label's site. Let It Be Guitar! Showcases fresh new arrangements of these familiar tunes, employing a wide variety of musical styles and guitar sounds, paying tribute to Paterson's biggest influences including Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Jorgen Ingmann, James Burton, Buddy Emmons, Ernest Ranglin and many more. Of the inspiration for the album, Paterson says, "This is the guitar record I've always wanted to make. I love the Beatles and their artistry and attention to detail in the recording studio-and I love all-things-guitar. So, I had a great time diving into these amazing songs, coming up with my own arrangements, and at the same time paying tribute to some of my favorite guitarists and vintage recording techniques of yesteryear." The album's liner notes were written by singer/songwriter and fellow vintage appreciator J.D. McPherson and give further explanation of the project, "Each of Joel's interpretations of these songs are concise, genre-bending, stylish tone poems, mixing both Joel's and the Beatles' own century-spanning inspirations into one zesty musical stew. Contained within certain tracks, you may even find nods to OTHER instrumentalists who have delved into the Beatles' body of work... It's almost the meta-sonic equivalent of a Liverpudlian Rube Goldberg drawing." Recorded in Chicago at Reliable Recorders and at Paterson's home studio, Let It Be Guitar! #features Joel on guitar, pedal steel, and lap steel; Beau Sample (Devil in a Woodpile, The Modern Sounds, The Fat Babies) on bass; Alex Hall (The Flat Five, The Western Elstons, The Fat Babies) on drums; and Chris Foreman on Hammond B3 organ. One of the busiest musicians on the roots music scene today, Paterson can be heard playing with The Modern Sounds, The Joel Paterson Organ Trio featuring Chris Foreman, Devil in a Woodpile, The Western Elstons, and many other Chicago-based projects.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Jim Liban!
Joel Paterson's newest platter for Ventrella Records, "I Say What I Mean," focuses the spotlight squarely on Milwaukee harmonica ace and songwriter Jim Liban. Long held in high regard by fellow musicians of every stripe and Midwestern blues aficionados, Liban leads a crack session crew through 11 original lyrics and 3 instrumentals tracked at Chicago's Hi-Style Studio. While the production is unabashedly vintage, Liban's songs and warm, engaging vocals lend the proceedings a timeless quality rare in contemporary recordings.
The synergy Paterson mentions in his thoughtful liner notes is immediately evident in the disc's eponymous opener - tough guitar, a swaggering beat, and HUGE harp tone. As a matter of fact, every song on the disc could be described that way! Liban and Paterson present us a groove album that is equal in artistic achievement and danceability, one where no song or style fusion seems out of place; in fact, tunes like "Must've Been Dreaming" call to mind the entirely plausible daydream of James Cotton jamming with Carl Perkins at Sun.
What sets this album far above the rest, however, is Liban's songcraft in both lyric and melody. He peppers his songs with memorable and meaningful lines like "Last night was my last call," on "No More Alcohol" and confidently doubles Paterson's guitar on "Real Good Deal." Every elegant instrumental break fits its song, and the arrangements keep the listener intrigued on repeated spins. There's little doubt; Jim Liban & Joel Paterson's "I Say What I Mean" is a long-overdue masterpiece of American roots music. Highly recommended. ~Gerry Hundt

"If you want to get a real feeling for Jim's blues harp playing, nothing beats 'The Jim LIban Blues Combo Live At Romie's'- it some of his best recordings, if not the best." -tmf714.

Jim offers a very hip and innovative style that really wails. Jim Liban has a rare skill; he controls the pitch of his bent notes microtonally, precisely and purposefully. He works one note for a long time, playing with the pitch. Liban just goes off, and blows some crazy stuff.

Joel Paterson and The Modern Sounds is a Chicago based rhythm trio featuring Joel Paterson on guitar, steel guitar and vocals; Beau Sample on string bass and vocals; Alex Hall on drums and vocals. This big little band is dedicated to performing traditional American music, specializing in hot jazz, western swing, rockabilly, classic blues and everything in between. The Modern Sounds are on the cutting edge of the Atomic Age—bringing you the best of the 30's, 40's and 50's.
Guitar ace Joel Paterson hails from Madison, Wisconsin and has lived in Chicago for many years, performing with various bands including Jimmy Sutton's Four Charms, The Wabash Jug Band and Kelly Hogan's Wooden Leg. He currently fronts The Modern Sounds and Joel Paterson's Blues Roundup. Joel can also be seen playing pedal steel with The Western Elstons. Slap bass virtuoso Beau Sample is from San Antonio, Texas. He spent a few years on the Austin music scene and has recently made Chicago his home. Sample has toured the world and the U.S. many times over, fronting his former band Cave Catt Sammy and backing up Elana James. Alex Hall is from Chicago and is a very talented drummer and recording engineer. He is the man behind the "Chicago Sound" of Ventrella Records and Tapes.
Joel, Beau and Alex founded Ventrella Records in an effort to get rich quick or go broke slow, depending on how you look at it. Ventrella released two CD's in 2008. "A Chicago Session" features The Modern Sounds backing up boogie woogie piano master Carl Sonny Leyland. "Steel is Real" showcases the pedal steel sounds of Joel Paterson. In June, 2009 The Modern Sounds released a specially priced double length album. The two CD set features "both kinds of music" they play—one disc is titled "Hold It Fellas...It's the Modern Sounds," featuring their rockabilly and blues set. The other disc is titled "Stomp Stomp," and features their hot jazz and swing side. Minimally mic'd and using no overdubs—The CD's have captured in the studio the great live set of the Modern Sounds.

The Modern Sounds can be seen playing around Chicago at various nightclubs including The Green Mill, Buddy Guy's Legends, The Hideout, Katerina's, Pete Miller's and Fitzgerald's.

Barrelhouse Chuck - Combo Classics

Year: 2014/2015

11. Farfisa B3 Boogie For Winwood (1:05)
12. Don't Go To Dallas (4:19)
13. Slam Hammer (2:35)

Much has been written about Barrelhouse Chuck's piano playiing over the past 35 years. Numerous references have been made to the influences of his mentors and friends Sunnyland Slim and Little Brother Montgomery, or his uncanny ability to play Chicago blues piano with deft ferocity like Otis Spann or the plantive emotion of Leroy Carr. However, little has ever been documented about his astounding talents with the Compact Combo Organs that make up an integral part of his repertoire, and are a key ingredient to what he refers to as "his sound". Chuck's life long love affair with the Combo Organ started early on. As a young boy he fell under the infectious Vox Organ riff of the 1966 garage classic "96 Teras" by ? And The Mysterians. "I just loved that song, and would look for it everytime that I saw a juke-box."

Featuring Joel Paterson, Billy Flynn, Hash Brown and Jeremy Johnson this set of 60's style blues sounds feature Chuck behind the mighty Combo Electric Organ. Think of Earl Hooker of Johnny Big Moose Walker's recordings from the 60's and you get the idea. Of course a stellar line up in support with S.P. Leary, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Richard Innes, Eddie Taylor Jr. and Curtis Salgado being just some of the many featured players.

The idea to record an album with Jim Liban hit me in 2013 during a Sunday afternoon gig in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I hadn’t played with the harmonica legend in a few years, and the last time we shared the stage in 2010 it seemed like he was tiring of it all. After nearly fifty years in the music business and a recent period of personal tragedies and loss, Jim was quietly withdrawing from the music scene. But it was obvious that afternoon, that time had healed a few wounds. The fire, soul and harmonica mastery were still there as strong as ever; and we went on to rock the crowd just like the old days. It was clear from the first note I heard that day—Jim Liban was back, and I knew we needed to make a record.

I called Jim the next day in a manic state and left a rambling message on his answering machine (yes, Jim still has an answering machine). I told him that I wanted to produce a record for him, and that he should come down to Chicago and record it with my band at Hi-Style Studio. We would dust off some of his old original tunes. We would record together in the same room with vintage gear and small amps like the blues records we love. We would do everything our way and make a traditional—and original—blues album. Jim called me back the next day and responded to my grandiose idea with his signature dry wit, “Does this mean I have to buy new harps?”

“I Say What I Mean” is not just a comeback. It is a snapshot of a life in blues, a tribute to all of our blues heroes, a loving tribute to Jim’s late wife, and a reunion with one of my heroes and first musical influences. These fourteen original blues songs are proof that Jim Liban says what he means, and indeed means just what he says. ~ Joel Paterson
