Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa - Don't Explain

Album: Don't Explain
Size: 125,8 MB
Time: 54:12
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2011
Styles: Blues/Soul/Rock mix
Art: Full

1. Sinner's Prayer (4:28)
2. Chocolate Jesus (2:40)
3. Your Heart Is As Black As Night (5:00)
4. For My Friends (4:11)
5. Don't Explain (4:34)
6. I'd Rather Go Blind (8:06)
7. Something's Got A Hold On Me (6:05)
8. I'll Take Care Of You (5:13)
9. Well, Well (3:42)
10. Ain't No Way (6:50)
11. I'll Take Care Of You (Radio Edit) (3:19)

Fans of guitar master Joe Bonamassa will be delighted that 2011 was such a prolific year in his career. First came the fine, rootsy Dust Bowl, then 2, the second chapter in his Black Country Communion project's catalog. Don't Explain, a collection of soul, blues, and jazz-oriented covers in collaboration with vocal firebrand Beth Hart marks his third entry this year. The ten-song set of blues and soul is a logical extension of her vocal contribution to "No Love on the Street" from Dust Bowl.

Opening is a thoroughly raucous contemporary blues reading of Ray Charles' "Sinner's Prayer," followed by a quirky version of Tom Waits' "Chocolate Jesus," and an unusual cover of contemporary jazz-pop singer/songwriter Melody Gardot's "You Heart Is as Black as Night." On this cut, a string orchestra adds a touch of perversity; it offers the impression of a femme fatale singing a Brecht-Weill number in a smoky cabaret in front of a moody string orchestra, buoyed by a brooding electric blues quintet. "For My Friends," a Bill Withers' tune, is a big, nasty, jagged blues number that keeps the funky groove intact. The title track, a number closely associated with Billie Holiday, falls flat. Hart tries too hard to employ Holiday's phrasing, the string orchestrations are overblown, and Bonamassa's crew is too reverent. This formula also mars the remake of Aretha Franklin's "Ain't No Way" that closes the set.

Far better are readings of Etta James' signatories "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "Something's Got a Hold on Me." Hart's emotive, throaty delivery is perfectly suited to both songs, and she resists trying to ape James' phrasing. Since they follow one another directly, the musical difference between them also showcase's Hart's diverse abilities. The former is a soul burner, the latter a gospel blues. Bonamassa and band accent her every phrase with requisite rowdiness, sting, and grit.

The pair's only vocal collaboration is a burning read of Delaney & Bonnie's "Well, Well." With Anton Fig's breaks and rim shots underscoring Arlan Scheirbaum's electric piano fills, Bonamassa's burning leads, the chunky, rhythmic foundation from guitarist Blondie Chaplin, and Carmine Rojas' bassline, Hart and the lead guitarist trade whip-smart call and response vocals with enough raw country-soul to bring the song to a new audience. While not a perfect recording, Don't Explain is a good one, whose strengths are numerous enough to warrant a second go round. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa - Seesaw

Album: Seesaw
Size: 113,7 MB
Time: 49:22
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2013
Styles: Blues/Soul/Rock mix
Art: Full

1. Them There Eyes (2:32)
2. Close To My Fire (5:14)
3. Nutbush City Limits (3:36)
4. I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know (7:05)
5. Can't Let Go (4:03)
6. Miss Lady (4:56)
7. If I Tell You I Love You (3:38)
8. Rhymes (5:05)
9. A Sunday Kind Of Love (3:57)
10. See Saw (3:27)
11. Strange Fruit (5:47)

Singer/songwriter Beth Hart continues to explore her blues and soul roots via 11 cover versions of her favorite tracks on Seesaw, her second album with blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Following the same path as their first collaboration, the 2011 all-covers release Don't Explain, the pair hooked up again with producer Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with Led Zeppelin, Journey, Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa, and numerous others. The 11 tunes kick off with a jump blues rendition of "Them There Eyes," a rock blues take on Ike & Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits"; punchy horns accentuate the Buddy Miles penned "Miss Lady," and they give a straightforward soul treatment to the Don Covay/Steve Cropper tune "See Saw" recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1968.

The influence of Janis Joplin and Etta James is evident on the powerful ballads "If I Tell You I Love You" and "A Sunday Kind of Love." The album closes with an eerie version of the anti-lynching poem from 1937 associated with Billie Holiday, "Strange Fruit." Also returning from the Don't Explain album are Bonamassa's assembled backing band: Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Blondie Chaplin (guitar), Carmine Rojas (bass), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboards), Lenny Castro (percussion), and Michael Rhodes (bass on "I'll Love You More Than You'll Ever Know"). /Al Campbell, AllMusic

Beth Hart is as real as it gets. At a time when other musicians polish their songs, airbrush their image, conceal their blemishes, deny their age and bury their darkest secrets, this is one artist who throws down her cards and invites you to either walk or love her anyway.
With War In My Mind, her ninth studio release, this Grammy-nominated artist has never served herself up so raw, on a record that embraces her merits and flaws, channels her bittersweet headspace and spins gold from her demons.
“More than any record I’ve ever made, I’m more open to being myself on these songs,” Beth explains. “I’ve come a long way with healing, and I’m comfortable with my darknesses, weirdnesses and things that I’m ashamed of – as well as all the things that make me feel good.”
The immersive sound of War In My Mind is visceral and alive, every song a testament to Rob Cavallo’s production smarts. Beth says, “I think one of Rob’s greatest talents is that he completely allows artists to have their own vision. Never once did I have anything disappointing happen to one of these songs.”
Having followed the fascinating career of Beth Hart for a quarter-century, we’ve learnt not to rule anything out – so long as it’s real. And now, with War In My Mind, this songwriter has made a record that bares her soul, represents her warts-and-all, and makes absolutely no apology for it.

The double set ‘Live At The Albert Hall’ squares the circle of Beth Hart’s roller coaster career. The former wild child and rock chick has matured into a stellar performer who delivers a career defining live album.

“Can you believe this place?” she asks the packed crowd after an a cappella intro to ‘As Long as I Have A Song’. It’s almost as if she making a reference to a musical healing process, as she draws on a troubled past to share the highs, lows and ironic moments of her musical journey.

She started on the streets of LA and enjoyed initial success in the late 90's, before things imploded and this Albert Hall show is a high point following her return to the up escalator.

She works the crowd like a true-pro on the breathless ‘Lifts You Up’ and she makes her first big emotional connection of the night on ‘Close To My Fire’, overcoming the scratchy toned opening guitar line (countered by a big tremolo sound) with some effortless phrasing.

The celebratory ‘Bang Bang Boom Boom’ includes a fun ‘call and response’ intro, on a typical example of how the set list ducks and dives in between deep felt emotion and playful moments.

It’s her ability to work the room with a meticulously planned show that makes this album such a success. There’s still plenty of room for spontaneity though – it wouldn’t be a Beth Hart show without such moments – as she reaches out to the crowd, her mum and any other focal point, to keep the show moving.

The crowd laps it all up from the punchy ‘Good As It Gets’ to the rocking ‘Spirit Of God’ and the heartfelt ballads ‘Sister Heroine’ and ‘Your Heart Is A Black As Night’, while the intro to ‘Waterfalls’ sounds like an aboriginal cry and finds the crowd in full voice.

It takes a big personality to hold the crowd for over 2 hours, which perhaps explains the gospel filler ‘I’m Saved’, albeit it could be an oblique reference to her own redemption.

There’s a switch to acoustic for the poignant ‘The Ugliest House On The Block’ and the dark ‘Spiders In My Bed’, which curiously has a Caribbean flavour.

She moves to piano for the beautifully phrased ‘Take It Easy On Me’ and the similar confessional ‘Leave The Light On’, the kind of song that draws the crowd into her troubled past.

And it’s Beth Hart’s ability to take us on a musical journey to join the dots between her highs and best forgotten lows, that makes her such a compelling performer.

Her diction, phrasing and relaxed delivery on ‘Mama This One’s For You’ is that of a singer with total confidence in her ability to nuance her lyrics and fashion them with deep emotion and a voice that wraps round her lyrics like honey.

She dedicates another confessional ‘My California’ to her hubbie, as she finishes in singer-songwriter mode, while the perfunctory finish allows the Albert Hall crowd their cathartic release.

And having rocked, beguiled and entertained in equal measure, she’s back in rock mode on ‘Trouble’, and the stuttering rhythm of ‘Love Is A Lie’, a song which gives full reign to her vibrato.

She finishes a 4 song encore with the whispered, close to the mic and quiet-to-loud dynamics of ‘Caught Out In The Rain’, to provide a suitable lengthy book-end to a show that fully showcases her talents. ****½ ~Review by Pete Feenstra

Provogue is home to some of the worlds’ finest modern Blues artists and the Label are thrilled to announce their first Rockin’ The Blues 2018 Tour featuring the exceptional talents of Eric Gales, Quinn Sullivan, Gary Hoey and now added to the bill as a special end of show guest is Texan guitar slinger Lance Lopez guitar hero extravaganza. The tour will be calling through Germany, The Netherlands and the UK in March next year.

To celebrate this, Rockin’ The Blues, the album features 14 stellar performances from Eric Gales, Quinn Sullivan, Gary Hoey, Black Stone Cherry, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Beth Hart, Walter Trout, SIMO, Supersonic Blues Machine, Thomas Wynn & The Believers, Jonny Lang, Lance Lopez, Sonny Landreth and Ronnie Baker Brooks.
Guitar whirlwind Eric Gales’ Been So Long is taken from his critically acclaimed new album Middle of the Road which was released early 2017, Eric Gales is a man on form and on fire right now. His fourth album on Provogue/Mascot Label Group (15th album in total) sees him at his most expressive yet, his rebirth in fact; it is a deeply personal and reflective record that echoes where he is in his life right now and he allows himself to open up and really flourish. The who’s who of guitarists are declaring their admiration for him; Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) exclaimed that “How Eric Gales isn’t the hugest name in rock guitar is a total mystery”, modern blues icon Joe Bonamassa said he is “One of the best, if not the best guitar player in the world”, whilst Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge) said ‘this guy could be the best player on Earth” not to mention an admirer in the shape of Carlos Santana.

18 year old guitar prodigy and Buddy Guy protégé Quinn Sullivan has been a music professional for more than 75 percent of his life. He’s shared the stage with Buddy Guy aged eight, Eric Clapton, Los Lobos, The Roots, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi and Joe Bonamassa, and he opened for B.B. King, who later invited him to play his treasured “Lucille” guitar. He’s also appeared on national TV, with guest appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Oprah, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan with Jeff Bridges and twice on The Ellen DeGeneres show aged six and fourteen. Sullivan has packed some extraordinary experience into his decade-long career, Midnight Highway is taken from the his new album of the same name which was produced by multi GRAMMY® winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, Johnny Winter).

It’s just so right-with-the-universe that Gary Hoey’s 20th album, Dust & Bones is an exuberant fusion of blues and rock. After all, this accomplished and diverse guitarist has explored several styles in his career—hard rock, rock, surf, and prog, to name a few. The title track is a bonafide Hoey classic. In 1987, the Boston-born guitarist caught the ear of Ozzy Osbourne—no slouch at picking great guitar players—and almost ended up in his band (The gig ultimately went to Zakk Wylde.) Hoey scored a major-label record deal where his version of Focus’ “Hocus Pocus” brought him huge success.

There’s no doubt about it, the state of Texas is well known worldwide for its fiery blues guitar players, and Lance Lopez (also singer/guitarist for Supersonic Blues Machine) perfectly encapsulates that fire on Mr Lucky with some furious piece of fretboard mastery.

The album is awash with some of the finest blues artists in modern times; powerhouse Beth Hart is unstoppable on Love is A Lie, the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is riding a creative tidal wave, firing out acclaimed albums, hooking up with the biggest names in music and rocking the house each night with that celebrated burnt-honey voice. Arena rockers Black Stone Cherry returned to their roots in September releasing a blues cover record Black to Blues, here they explode in BSC style on Muddy Waters, Champagne & Reefer. Louisiana’s Kenny Wayne Shepherd prowls on Diamonds & Gold saying; Diamonds & Gold is a wink-wink kinda thing about how materialistic our society has become. It’s like, we should be living for bigger things than how much we can accumulate. If you look at the mainstream and what young people are led to believe they should work towards – it’s all just stuff. And stuff doesn’t have much substance. So that song is just to kinda inspire people to look for more in life.”

Nashville trio SIMO get funky on People Say, slide guitar maestro Sonny Landreth demonstrates his chops on this live version of Blues Attack taken from Recorded Live In Lafayette. Blues warrior Walter Trout shows why he is at the peak of his career with the formidable We’re All In This Together ft. Joe Bonamasssa. Jonny Lang returned with his first new album, Signs in 4 years in 2017 and Stronger Together is a soul crossover highlight. Chicago blues man Ronnie Baker Brooks, son of the late great Lonnie Brooks, delivers some fine blues, soul and funk with Times Have Changed ft. Al Kapone. Orlando’s favourite band Thomas Wynn & The Believers deliver an exquisite performance on Wade Waist Deep whilst Supersonic Blues Machine go from strength to strength and reach for the sky on the festival favourite, the hypnotic L.O.V.E.

As fashionable as concert sit-ins have come to be in recent years, such guesting can be the bane of the live performance. So often it is the case that such invitees can interrupts the flow and/or momentum rather than nurturing it. However, Jeff Beck's August 2016 celebration in Los Angeles of his fiftieth anniversary is the exception to that rule: the stream of diverse personnel is of a piece with the stylistic history the event represents.

Live at the Hollywood Bowl is quite likely everything the attendee would want to hear at one of the British guitarist's shows. Likewise, the guests that populate the roster and share the stage with the icon of the instrument are all those a fan would hope for, but not expect to see in a single setting. ~Doug Collette

Jeff Beck paid fitting tribute to Les Paul last summer, celebrating what would have been the pioneering guitarist's 95th birthday by playing his friend and mentor's music, along with classic tunes from the era, in the same Times Square nightclub that Les Paul played every Monday for 14 years, before his death in August 2009.

Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as 'A Celebration of Les Paul,' Jeff Beck was joined by The Imelda May Band at the Iridium Jazz Club on June 9th, 2010. The two-time Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee mesmerized the star-studded audience with a tour de force performance of classics that Paul recorded with Mary Ford, 'How High The Moon,' 'Vaya Con Dios' and 'Mockin' Bird Hill,' along with such rock and roll standards as 'Twenty Flight Rock' and 'Walking In The Sand.'

Following this release, Beck will take the 'Rock And Roll Party' on the road for a short U.S. tour. Beck will once again be backed by The Imelda May Band and its enchanting singer, Imelda May, who joined Beck on stage at the 2010 Grammy® Awards for a spot-on rendition of Paul's 'How High The Moon.'

PBS will give fans a first look at a unique edition of this performance with the premiere of 'Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul,' a concert special that captures the first night of 'The Celebration to Honor Les Paul,' which was recorded on June 9, 2010, what would have been Les Paul's 95th birthday. Special guest performers included Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews, Gary U.S. Bonds and Brian Setzer, who traded riffs with Beck on Eddie Cochran's rockabilly classic 'Twenty Flight Rock.'

In 2016, the headline news is Beth’s latest album, Fire On The Floor (out 14 October on Provogue/Mascot Label Group): a release that even this fiercely self-critical artist describes as “pretty frickin’ good”.

Fire On The Floor is sure to build on her breakneck momentum. As the singer explains, this latest record gave her an emotional release following the bitter-sweet sessions for Better Than Home. If there’s a theme that ties these twelve songs together, it’s a sense of escapism following the hardest of times. “We were still in the mixing stages for that album and I knew I had to make another record. Making Better Than Home was so painful, because one of the producers, Michael Stevens, was dying of cancer. It was a very emotional record to write and to make. I wanted the songs for Fire On The Floor to get born real quick.”

Take a spin of Fire On The Floor and you’ll see exactly why. These twelve new songs run the gamut of genre, reflecting Beth’s eclectic teenage influences, which took in everything from gospel, soul and classical to the seismic rock of Soundgarden. “As a writer,” she nods, “I feel really stifled if I’m trying to write in the same style. I just can’t do that. Growing up as a kid, I was raised all over the place stylistically, loving so many different genres.”

Fire On The Floor is the album that Beth Hart needed to make. Likewise, it’s a record that you need to hear. “I’m so pleased with it,” she concludes. “I recently had to organise the sequence of the record, and while I was doing that, I was thinking to myself, ‘Y’know, this is pretty frickin’ good…!’”

"Better Than Home" successes are many. It’s an impressive, mature piece of work full of sincerity, seemingly downbeat however each track always builds to an impressive finale. Beth has had many successes in the last 15 years with numerous blues offerings topping the blues charts, Grammy nominations and fantastic collaborations with JB. This lady is on a roll, proven to be a tenacious woman, committed to her craft.

“Might As Well Smile” provides a send-off steeped in optimism, powerful blues, fantastic instrumentation with well rounded lyrics."Tell ‘Em To Hold On" begins with fragile piano work, as does the impressive "St Teresa" both eventually building to commanding climaxes. "Hart embraces her own frailties and faults with an endearing, wide eyed honesty, and although the tone of some of the songs does occasionally seem melancholic, they never feel weak or overwhelmed." Sensitive songwriting topics with moments of hope and reflection delivered with Hart's inspiring and sensitive delivery.

This release catalogs the story of a survivor, a fighter, winning out over her demons. Her voice is the instrument that draws her out of the darkness, soothing vocals, crisp and full of promise for the future to come. This is a fantastic CD. But, what else would one expect from Hart, she's an artist who so far has delivered 100% perfection. ~To The Max Bax

The collaboration between soulful singer Beth Hart and popular blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa has been both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful. While their 2011 album Don't Explain laid a foundation and flitted on and off the blues chart for a couple years, their 2013 album Seesaw earned the pair a Grammy nomination and still sits in the Top Ten. So, what do Beth and Joe do for an encore?

How about a live album? Better yet, a live album and a live DVD! No one has ever accused Joey Bones of not delivering for his fans, and on March 25, 2014 his J&R Adventures label will release the dynamic duo's Live In Amsterdam in three different formats. A live concert documentary featuring 21 songs, including such fan favorites from the two albums like "Sinner's Prayer," Etta James' classic "I'd Rather Go Blind," "Strange Fruit," "Nutbush City Limits," and the title track from Seesaw.

Against the backdrop of the beautiful, historic Koninklijk Theater Carre in Amsterdam, the performance wows with scorching soul covers from the duo's 2011 debut album Don't Explain and 2013 follow-up Seesaw, originally made famous by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Ray Charles, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Bill Withers, Delaney & Bonnie, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, Nina Simone, and more.

This project was born from what Hart, Bonamassa, and Bonamassa's long-time producer Kevin Shirley call a "crazy idea" to record a catalog of songs in a way that recalls the days when a band recorded live in the studio with little or no overdubs; the days when the vocalist was happy when a take was done regardless of personal performance.

"What we're trying to capture is an era of reaction and spontaneity – something that was a great inspiration for me as a budding musician," explained Bonamassa. "It's a bygone era in lieu of modern times and digital studio manipulation. We wanted to do the exact opposite of that for this live concert. There were no nets and what you hear is what was sung and played that night."
