The urban rhythm and blues of the forties and early fifties was a piano and saxophone-emphasized music that - played mainly by extremely capable jazz musicians - was a dance and everyday music for the purely black going out audience. With the retreat of jazz from the dance floor to the concert stage and the triumph of rock n'roll, this extremely accessible variety of blues faded into the background. In Europe there are only a few specialists who are really familiar with this style. The electric guitar blues completely masked the audience's perception from the sixties.

After a small tour, organized by the Zürich promoter and saxophonist Duke Seidmann, with legends such as Red Holloway, Carrie Smith and the over eighty-year-old Jimmy Coe, the accompanying band, which was engaged ad hoc for the "Legends of Rhythm and Blues", decided to form a permanent group. The hard core of the Blue Flagships was together with the renowned arranger and pianist David Ruosch.

Are the Blue Flagships Europe's most swinging blues band or bluesiest swing band? That's the only point audiences and experts don't agree on fully yet. However, their special mix of 40's swing dance music and 50's R&B makes everybody instantaneously feel like dancing. Undeniable to pundits and connoisseurs, the band is one of the last to cope with that particular sound from the so-called "Truman era" (1945-53). As if proof was necessary, you'll usually find quite a few lindy hoppers at each public concert the band plays. This CD consists of compositions from Al Sears' band book and songs written by Jimmy "T99" Nelson.

Personnel: Tommie Harris (vocals); Red Holloway (tenor saxophone); Duke Seidman (alto & tenor saxophone); Tom Müller (baritone saxophone); Dave Rousch (piano); W-Tone Balker (guitar); Daniel Gugolz (double bass); Martin Meyer (drums).

Originally put together as an ad-hoc accompanying band for the highly successful European tour (1963) "Legends of Rhythm & Blues" featuring Red Holloway, The Blue Flagships lead by saxophonist Duke Seidmann reformed for a series of concerts in Switzerland and Germany during 2004 to accompany Texas blues legend Jimmy 'T99' Nelson.

Between 1951 and 1961, Jimmy 'T99' Nelson cut some of the greatest sides in the history of rock and roll or, as it was known in those days, rhythm and blues. Two of his tunes were substantial hits: "T99 Blues" and "Meet Me With Your Black Dress On," one of the sexiest performances ever recorded. Most of the others, every bit as good, never got played on the radio or promoted effectively. Had people heard them, they would have stormed record stores to buy them. Jimmy is now 87, but still performing and in as good a voice as he ever had.

Born in Philadelphia in 1919, Nelson's earliest musical experience was in church. "You talk about rock and roll - that's where it comes from!" In 1941, Nelson caught Big Joe Turner performing at a club in Oakland, CA. Suddenly, everything changed. "I knew right then and there I wanted to sing the blues." Turner mentored Nelson on everything from vocal technique to stage presence to dealing with club owners. Big Joe often toured with Nelson and recorded some of his originals. Nelson absorbed every nuance from Big Joe and, to this day, his performances epitomize the shouting, swinging style that Big Joe pioneered.

Personnel: Jimmy 'T99' Nelson, Tommie Harris, Christina E. Jaccard - (vocals), Duke Seidmann - (tenor saxophone, vocals), Wendelin Salzmann - (baritone & tenor saxophone), Gordon "Sax" Beadle - (tenor saxophone), Norbert Schneider, Alex Schultz - (guitars), David Ruosch - (piano), Daniel Gugolz - (bass), Peter Müller - (drums)
