To understand Mighty Mo Rodgers' music, just tune into a couple lines from "Black Coffee and Cigarettes" - "I bleed blues and rhythm and rock and roll, All that funky stuff that shakes up my soul." With all original songs written by vocalist Mighty Mo, the Los Angeles band also includes Burleigh Drummond (drums, percussion), Will MacGregor (bass), and Kevin Longden (guitar). Eight additional guest musicians supplement the band's sound with occasional tastes of sax, flute, Dobro, strings, keyboards, guitar, bass, accordion, harmonica and backup vocals. The album is dedicated to that time (1959-63) and to Route 66 where Blues became Rock `n' Roll.

The lively soul-stirrers pay tribute to the blues, cars, blues, love, blues and women ... what more is there? Well, a couple songs ("Tell Me Why" and "The Freddy Fender Song") recognize the contributions of the band's musical influences from Chuck Berry to Roy Orbison, John Lee Hooker to B.B. King. Just try to keep a straight face when Mighty Mo, on his rock and roll mission with a petition, asks "You graduate from a high school with numbers? You know that's sure `nough a bummer. Why, there's no Jerry Lee Lewis High?" I suspect that kids would be lining up for miles to get into that school.

When "God In My Car" cues up, Mighty Mo reminds us to not mess with his radio dial. "If God was ridin' in my car, He would listen to the blues, Don't want no country, don't want no jazz, I play the blues, that is my cosmic gas." Once we know what's #1 in Mighty Mo's book of life, "My Blues, My Car and My Woman" makes a witty statement about his rules and how easily a little love and fun can get those priorities changed.
Percussionist Jan Eglen wrote the lyrics for "Light of America" that closes the album in an emotional way with an aching ballad that provides a slightly different canvas for Mighty Mo's gritty and warmhearted vocals. For some tastefully-rendered can't shake `em or brake `em West Coast blues, "Cadillac Jack" lets the world know what's goin' on ... their mission might be to bring the fishtail back, or it might be to get a high school named for Jerry Lee Lewis. But in the meantime, just enjoy singing along because their "blues is true." (Joe Ross, Roots Music Review)

Mighty Mo Rodgers Is A Remarkably Original Singer/Songwriter Who's Shaped His Life Experiences Into A Terrifically Eclectic And Immensely Deep Vision On His Blue Thumb Debut, Blues Is My Wailin' Wall.

Rodgers Combines Soulful, Gritty Vocals And Driving Rhythms With A Wholly Personal Panorama On Songs Like "Took Away The Drum," "The Kennedy Song," "Tuskegee Blues" And A Moving Tribute To His Childhood Friend With "Willie B. And Me." Blues Is My Wailin' Wall Has Already Made An Indelible Impression On Listeners, Both In Its Recorded Form And From The Concert Stage Where Rodgers Performance Dynamic Is Larger-Than-Life Captivating.

"My Songs Are All About Life, And The Music Comes Directly From My Heart And Soul," Rodgers Says Candidly.

Born Maurice Rodgers In The Steel Town Of East Chicago, Indiana, Where He Studied Classical Piano, He Had The Distinct Benefit Of His Father's Nightclub And The Up-Close And Personal Influences Of The Blues And Jazz Players Who Performed There. As A Teenager, Sneaking Into The Notorious Chicken Shack With His Best Friend Willie B. In Nearby Gary, He Was Awestruck By The Blues Of Willie Dixon, Eddie Boyd, Jimmy Reed And Others.

"At The Time, They Referred To Those Clubs As The Chitlin Circuit," Rodgers Recalls, "But To Me It Was A Royal Banquet." It Was Then That Music Became The Dominating Force In His Life.

When Rock Rolled In, He Was Dazzled By Its Black And Whiteness, And Then Overwhelmed By The Stax And Mussel Shoals Soul Explosion That Dominated With Aretha, Sam & Dave, And Many More Who Hit The Airwaves Between 1963 And 1967. Still In High School, Rodgers Joined His First Band; A Blues/R&B Outfit Called The Rocketeers.

Although Music Was A Major Part Of His Life, He Exhibited An Athletic Prowess As The State High School Wrestling Champ, Which Earned Him A Scholarship To Indiana State University. He Initially Declined, Due To His Mother's Failing Health. It Was, However, Among Her Deepest And Final Wishes Before Her Death That He Pursue A Higher Education And So He Became A Member Of The Indiana State Student Body.

It Was There He Began Exploring The Songwriting Aspect Of His Musical Abilities, Fronting The Maurice Rodgers Combo On Wurlitzer Piano. Performing A Mix Of R&B Covers And Rodgers' Own Ray Charles/Otis Redding Inspired Tunes, The Band Was The High Point Of Saturday Night Frat Parties. With Music As His Guide, Rodgers Traded In His Schoolbooks For A One-Way Ticket To L.A. Where He Gigged With T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Jimmy Reed, And Many Others. That's His Farfisa Organ On Brenton Wood's 1967 Hit, "Gimme Some Kind Of Sign."

But Still What He Considers As One Of His Most Important Accomplishments Was Producing An Album For His All-Time Greatest Heroes, Folk/Blues Harmonica Legend Sonny Terry Who Teamed Up With The Equally Renowned Brownie McGhee. The Critically Acclaimed 1973 A&M Release, Sonny And Brownie, Was A Watershed Event For Rodgers. He Selected The Material, Which Featured Three Of His Own Compositions, Rounded Up John Mayall, Arlo Guthrie, John Hammond, Michael Franks And Sugarcane Harris And Others As Backing Musicians-And Galvanized His Relationship With Terry And McGhee.

"They Were Musicians Who Demonstrated Throughout Their Careers That The Blues Is A Soulful Reflection Of The Spirit, The Heritage And The Language Of Black People In America," Rodgers Relates. "They Gave Me The Inspiration To Write With A Much More Personal Perspective, To Write About Real Life Experiences, To Write About The Truths Of Everyday Life."

Whether On Paper, On Record, Or In Conversation, It's Rodgers' Meaningful Exploration And Expression Of Life Through Music That Makes The Trip Soul-Satisfying.

This is my Blues Odyssey.A journey through "the blues" to Blues. My vehicle, the Blues Voice; a vernacular black-of-tongue tale of call-and-response to freedom and movement. Blues, born of slavery, in the skin of commerce, constantly "sheds", to outrun, outfox, the slave catchers of commodification. Blues is our trickster. Paying the dues, and dealing with the devil of our own making. I hear its Holy Howl, and I must be on my way now. --MMR--

Mighty Mo Rodgers (real name Maurice Rodgers) was born in Indiana where his father owned a club that featured blues performers. When Rodgers wasn't studying classical piano he was checking out the blues artists that played there. Growing up, Rodgers was deeply affected by the mid-'60s soul music from the Memphis-based Stax label. Using Stax as an influence, Rodgers started his first band while in high school called the Rocketeers. Upon entering Indiana State College, Rodgers fronted another band, the Maurice Rodgers Combo, playing Wurlitzer piano and incorporating originals with cover versions of popular songs from the era. He finally decided to quit college, move to L.A., and give music his full-time attention. There he played gigs and recorded with many blues and R&B legends; his organ can be heard on Brenton Wood's 1967 hit Gimme Little Sign. Throughout the years Rodgers has not limited himself to performing. In 1973 he produced the album Sonny and Terry on A&M records for Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. After growing tired of tedious session work, he continued to write songs and became a house songwriter for Motown and Chappel Publishing. Rodgers also continued to produce sessions for other artists and decided to go back to school where he received a degree in philosophy. In 1999 he released his first solo effort, Blues Is My Wailin' Wall, on Blue Thumb. The recording contained all original material, mixing his philosophical views with blues/soul musical roots. ~bio bt Al Campbell
