Stone The Crows:
Stone the Crows was a tough-luck, working class, progressive soul band that came out of the pubs of Scotland in the early '70s. They had everything going for them at the start: not one, but two gritty singers, a talented guitarist, a rhythm section that had played with John Mayall, and the name recognition of having Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant as their producer. Despite favorable reviews by the critics, however, they never managed to sell their hybridized soul music to a large audience. In addition, they lost two of their key members early on, one of whom was tragically electrocuted, and the group broke up after four albums.

Their biggest contribution to rock was the immense vocal talent of one Maggie Bell. Winner of several Top Girl Singer awards in Britain, Bell had a raunchy, gutbucket voice that, although it fell short of the naked emotion and range of Janis Joplin's, came probably closer to her style than any other female singer. She first attracted notice when she jumped up on stage at a show in Glasgow to wail with Alex Harvey of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Impressed by her talent (and audacity), Harvey hooked her up with his guitar-playing younger brother Les, then fronting a local band called the Kinning Park Ramblers. After playing army bases in Europe for several years as Power, Bell, Harvey, bassist Jim Dewar, keyboardist Jon McGinnis, and drummer Colin Allen (who had played with future bass player Steve Thompson in John Mayall's band), came to the attention of Peter Grant and they changed their name to Stone the Crows, which supposedly is a Scottish variation of "the hell with it."

Both of their first two albums received good reviews upon release, but sold very meagerly. Then bassist/vocalist Jim Dewar quit the band to join Robin Trower's fledgling group, to be replaced by the non-singing Steve Thompson. Shortly after releasing Teenage Licks, guitarist Les Harvey was electrocuted onstage during a gig at Swansea University. This appeared to end the band, but they carried on, recruiting young Jimmy McCulloch from Thunderclap Newman and released "'Ontinuous Performance." Although the rock press lauded the singing of Bell, her group couldn't seem to emerge from the shadows and they broke up after this last album, with McCulloch flying away to join Paul McCartney in Wings. ~ by Peter Kurtz

Maggie Bell:
Scottish soul-rock singer Maggie Bell first gained prominence singing with Stone the Crows, which released its first album in 1970 and broke up in June 1973. Bell went solo with Queen of the Night (featuring the U.S. number 97 "After Midnight") in 1974, followed by Suicide Sal, both of which charted in the U.S. Her only U.K. chart singles came with "Hazell" (number 37) in 1978, and a duet with B.A. Robertson, "Hold Me" (number 11), in 1981. ~by William Ruhlmann

12. Road (w. Al Kooper) (5:26)
13. It Take Love (3:19)
14. You Can Dance To The Blues (w. Southside Johnny) (3:43)

Hallelujah! Yes, it's a brand new album from one of the UK's best loved and most popular bands. We could say it stars the incomparable singer and harmonic player supreme Paul Jones. We could add it also stars Tom McGuinness on lead guitar. But The Blues Band is really a co-operative with a team of superb musicians on board. And, this time, they are augmented by welcome guest artists adding extra blues power. Among those joining the regulars are singers Linda Lewis and Maggie Bell, the legendary Al Kooper on keyboards, Mike Sanchez and Pete Wingfield on piano, and Southside Johnny on raunchy vocals.

Together they tear through a barnstorming selection of mainly originals numbers, many written by bass man Gary Fletcher and slide guitarist Dave Kelly. There are 14 tracks to enjoy, ranging from Paul Jones "Suddenly I Like It" to Tom's thoughtful "My Brother Was A Sailor" - all about the perils of life at sea. Few Short Lines makes a fine addition to the legacy of a band, whose career now spans more than 30 years. Good to know they are still out on the road, playing the music they love. /Amazon

The Hamburg Blues Band (HBB) came to be after a jam session in "Onkel Pö" 1983. The last remaining founding member is Gert Lange on rhythm guitar.

The list of top tier musicians that has played alongside Gert in the HBB is long. Among them David "Clem" Clempson (Colosseum, Humble Pie), Alex Conti (Atlantis, Lake), and saxophone virtuoso Dick Heckstall-Smith (Bluesbreakers), to name a few. In the last few years the band sound has taken a noticeable turn towards psychedelic blues-rock, partly due to Miller Anderson taking on the lead guitar. On their homepage the band confesses that their blues "frequently staggers the purists". HBB combines tough guitar blues-rock with R&B, Boogie, Soul and the occasional psychedelic element.

The HBB core, beside the guitarist Lange, is Hans Wallbaum (drums), Michael "Bexi" Becker (bass) and Adrian Askew (keyboard). An unofficial "sixth member" behind the curtains is the songwriter Pete Brown, who has penned classics like "White Room" and "Sunshine of your Love" for Cream.

For their extended 30th anniversary tour HBB took on the Scottish singer Maggie Bell. Maggie has been in business for more than 55 years by now, with a career as a solo artist, in TV productions and in various bands. Most famous among the bands is probably Stone the Crows, whose saga ended tragically when the guitarist was electrocuted on stage in 1973. After spending 20 years in the Netherlands Maggie moved back to the UK in 2006 and joined The British Blues Quintet. Parallel to that she toured with Chris Farlowe and with The Manfreds. She was also part of the Jon Lord Blues Project, where Miller Anderson participated as well.

Miller Anderson has been touring with the HBB since 2012. We are particularly happy to finally greet him on stage at the Blueslawine, after the unfortunate cancellation of his planned performance at the 17th Blueslawine in 2011 due to a health issue. An attempt to list all the bands the Scottish guitarist has played in would be a daunting task, but to pick a few: The Keef Hartley Band, Savoy Brown and the Spencer Davis Group. Miller (born in 1945) began his musical career in the mid 60's and performed at the Woodstock festival 1969 with the Keef Hartley Band. His first solo album hit the shelves in the early 70's.

HBB's latest CD is "Friends for a LIVEtime", a compilation of performances over 30 years.

British Blues Quintet - Live In Glasgow

The British Blues Quintet didn't intend on recording their March, 2007 performance in Glasgow, Scotland. But their soundman obviously had a good feeling about the gig, and began rolling the tape during the second song, for which fans will be eternally grateful, because this was one heck of a show. Of course, playing in Maggie Bell's hometown was invariably going to draw a large, appreciative audience. However, Britain's celebrated blues singer isn't the only legend among BBQ's ranks, which also features her old Stone the Crows' bandmate, drummer Colin Allen, keyboardist Zoot Money, ex-Keef Hartley Band guitarist Miller Anderson, and bassist Colin Hodgkinson. And besides, Bell is only on-stage for half the show, with the latter three men divvying up the vocals between them. The set list is drawn from both the members' own compositions as well as astutely chosen covers. One of the best of the latter is their sensational take on the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself," which kicks off in the Delta, travels up to funkytown, and ends in British Invasion territory. Willie Dixon's "I Just Wanna' Make Love to You" gets an equally phenomenal workout, with Bell making this song her own, while the band trots out their best blues licks. And if you're wondering why after all these years these Brits are still singing the blues, Anderson answers that question in spades on his own fabulous "Fog on the Highway." And whether they're reinventing other's classics, like Free's "Wishing Well," which takes on new urgency by aiming it straight at Bush and Blair, or resurrecting their own, such as their steaming take on Stone the Crows' "Penicillin Blues," BBQ bring down the house. Although not always in blues fashion, as the band storm into rocking R&B and spin off into jazzier realms, exploring just about every style of blues and R&B along the way. An absolutely sensational show thankfully captured for posterity. ~Jo-Ann Greene

09. I Don't Need No Doctor (4:57)
10. 7th Blues (4:04)
11. The Way You Waved Goodbye (5:13)

The first ever solo album from the former Bakerloo, Colosseum and Humble Pie lead guitarist. Clem’s history also includes guest musician appearances with The Hamburg Blues Band, Jack Bruce, Billy Cobham and Dave Sancious, Roger Waters, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Jon Anderson, Chris de Burgh, BB King and Bob Dylan.

Recorded in late 2012/early 2013 in Germany and the UK, here is a feast of classic guitar rock that will appeal to fans of well crafted, superbly performed and produced blues and hard rock. Good songs loaded with great guitar from this fine electric guitarist.

The title of the album refers to the controversy surrounding the relationship between the media, ‘celebrities’ and members of the general public, who often feel victimised by the sometimes ruthless attention of the press. Clem collaborated with legendary Cream lyricist Pete Brown on several of the original songs.

Features guest performances by Chris Farlowe and Maggie Bell and keyboardist Ronnie Leahy. (‘Route 69’ marks the reunion of Maggie and Ronnie, who began their careers together in the legendary Stone The Crows). Chris and Maggie also feature on a new version of ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’, the Ray Charles classic that was such a massive hit at ‘live’ performances during Clem’s time with Humble Pie.

Clem and his excellent band will be touring Europe extensively from September 2013 onwards to promote this fantastic new album.
