14. My Babe (4:55)
15. Kansas City (4:19)
16. Work Song (13:34)

Lengthy double-CD package of live and unreleased material recorded by the prime edition of the band in 1965-1966, all with Mike Bloomfield on board. Four songs are from their show at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965 (the same day they backed Bob Dylan's electric set, possibly the most controversial performance in the history of rock music). Eight tunes, according to the credits, were cut at Southerland Hotel in Chicago in the spring of 1966, but these sound like demos, outtakes, or a radio broadcast; there's certainly no audience present.

The rest was recorded at appearances at the Fillmore West in September and October of 1966. The fidelity is pretty good throughout, though not quite up to official release standards. It's an opportunity to hear quite a few numbers that the Bloomfield lineup did not release on Elektra studio recordings, including "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Come on In," "I'm Going Home," "Dropping Out," "Baby, Please Don't Go," "My Babe," "Kansas City," and "So Fine." The performances are certainly best and tightest on those spring 1966 Southerland Hotel tracks, and least interesting when they go into rock-oriented covers like "Kansas City" and "So Fine."

Of greatest interest, though, are lengthy live versions of their two finest moments, the instrumentals "East West" and "Work Song." "East West" is quite good, though unfortunately the performance seems to cut off at the very end, while "Work Song" is much longer (13 minutes) than its studio counterpart. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

7. Driftin' And Driftin' (13:48)
8. Blind Leading The Blind (4:02)

Though their luster had faded by 1972, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band had already earned their measure of immortality by first popularizing and then pushing the boundaries of the blues. This influential outfit recorded two acknowledged classics, their eponymous debut and the subsequent East-West, which account for the first two sides of Golden Butter. Here you'll find the straight-ahead Chicago blues of their debut ("Born in Chicago," "Mellow Down Easy," "Look Over Yonders Wall") and the prescient psychedelic blues-rock of their second effort ("East-West," "Mary, Mary").

The last two sides of this compilation draw from the Elektra anthology What's Shakin' ("Spoonful," "One More Mile"), a pair of tracks each from their third and fourth albums, and a song from each of their last three albums. Delivered in chronological order, Golden Butter offers an accurate miniature of the band's unraveling from blues ambassadors to innovators to increasingly irrelevant icons. Yet if the band's fire burned briefly, it burned brightly, casting a shadow that remained visible throughout the decade in the music of Cream, Steve Miller Band, and many others.

And even toward the end of their career, the band had an authentic understanding of the blues that few could match (a point underscored here with a live version of "Driftin' and Driftin'"). Golden Butter has yet to be released on CD, Elektra electing instead to release a new double-disc retrospective, An Anthology - The Elektra Years. Both compilations are good enough to plant the seeds of hero worship in listeners' heads and spur them on to dig deeper into Butterfield. /Dave Connolly, AllMusic

Paul Butterfield was a legend long before he ever set foot in Woodstock. Perhaps the first authentic white voice in the blues, his legendary '60s aggregations showed how the blues could progress long after it had ceased to be nourished from the black neighbourhoods. In Butterfield's hands, the blues could be heavy with rock 'n' roll attitude or fleet with jazz. His bands were loud, ballsy, and aware of tradition without being overawed by it. Butterfield was a musical eclectic. His roots were in jazz, blues, R&B, and rock 'n' roll, and he saw nothing wrong with combining them all. That eclecticism could sometimes be his undoing, but at his considerable best Paul Butterfield was a towering giant of American music.

18. Paul Butterfield - Last Night (4:40)
19. Paul Butterfield - Loaded (2:55)
20. Paul Butterfield - One Room Country Shack (4:55)

An album released on the Red Lightnin' label in 1972 consisting of one side of Big Walter Horton and the other side with very early Paul Butterfield (1963). The Horton side consists of eight tracks of Horton with guitarist Robert Nighthawk (no bass or drums). Nighthawk is playing pure backup here, very little else. It is not clear when these were recorded. Perhaps not classic Walter, but any Big Walter is worth a listen. There are three instrumentals that make for good listening, including a version of "Easy" (not up to the original Walter recording). The instrumental "West Side Blues" has some interesting Walter harp licks that I have not heard elsewhere. The other five cuts are Walter singing. Of these, there is a great version of "Louise" and Walter singing "Tin Pan Alley" which never fails to raise the hair on the back of my neck. If you can find this album, it is good to have.

The Butterfield side contains six tracks with Butterfield, Smokey Smothers on guitar, Jerome Arnold on bass, and Sam Lay on drums. This was recorded at Big Johns, the North side Chicago club where the Butterfield Band first played in 1963 - some two years before the material on the first Paul Butterfield Blues Band album, which was released in 1965. The six tracks include two instrumentals, "Got My Mojo Working" and the Butterfield-authored tune "Loaded." Although this is very early Butterfield, the harp playing is excellent and already in his own unique style. The singing is a little rough and heavy sounding. Butterfield fans will want to find this rare vinyl for musical and historical reasons. /Michael Erlewine, AllMusic

Note: This CD reissue has six additional tracks by Walter Horton compared to the original LP release. Tracks 1-8 and 15-20 taken from the original LP "An Offer You Can't Refuse" (1972), tracks 9-14 taken from the CD "Live At The El Mocambo" (1991).

13. The Lovin' Spoonful - Searchin' (3:15)
14. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - One More Mile (3:29)

When we launched our Elektra reissue program, we honestly didn't think we would land this legendary 1966 rarities compilation, because it boasted a couple of big-name artists, the Lovin' Spoonful and Eric Clapton, who were not known for their association with the label. But the lawyers checked, the label signed off, and here we are, with one of the decade's most notorious compilations!

The Lovin' Spoonful tracks stem from the band's almost having signed with the label; Jac Holzman states in the notes that it was John Sebastian's way of making amends, and these four tracks - "Good Time Music", "Almost Grown", "Don't Bank on It Baby", and "Searchin'" - were never recorded by the band, not even in different versions. The Clapton tracks, meanwhile, feature him with Powerhouse, a supergroup composed of Jack Bruce, Stevie Winwood and Manfred Mann lead singer Paul Jones; produced by Joe Boyd, the tracks are "I Want to Know", "Crossroads", and "Steppin' Out".

Five Paul Butterfield Blues Band tracks appear here from their ill-fated debut recording session for Elektra: "Lovin' Cup", "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", "Spoonful", and two that appear nowhere else,"Off the Wall" and "One More Mile". Tom Rush's "I'm in Love Again" is an outtake from his 1966 LP "Take a Little Walk with Me", and Al Kooper's "I Can't Keep from Crying Sometimes" is something of a rehearsal for the later, fuller Blues Project version. A collector's dream - a Collectors' Choice Music exclusive!

6. One More Heartache (4:00)
7. Strawberry Jam (10:40)
8. Come On In This House (5:08)
9. Born In Chicago (4:08)

These nine cuts are from various live performances of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band during their heyday in the middle-to-late '60s. This album was put together by Mark Naftalin, who played keyboards on those first few incredible Butterfield albums. Don't look for the clearest sound (it's adequate) because these are live tunes recorded at clubs, often with minimal equipment. It is the music that is in focus here - a window into that incredible band at a time when they were hot.

Those of us who were on the scene at the time know that, although the original Butterfield albums are great, the band was a total knockout when heard live. Featuring Butterfield's harmonica, here are glimpses into that time and music. Most of the tunes have appeared elsewhere, but the extended instrumental "Strawberry Jam" (written by Naftalin) is unique to this album - worth hearing. It features great guitar by Elvin Bishop. /Michael Erlewine, AllMusic

While at Cambridge, MA, Maria Muldaur joined the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and began an affair with singer Geoff Muldaur; the couple eventually married and had a daughter, Jenni, who would later become a singer in her own right. When the Kweskin band broke up in 1968, the couple stayed Amo with their label (Reprise) and began recording together as Geoff & Maria Muldaur. They moved to Woodstock, NY, to take advantage of the burgeoning music scene there and issued two albums -- 1970's Pottery Pie and 1971's Sweet Potatoes -- before Geoff departed in 1972 to form Better Days with Paul Butterfield, a move that signaled not only the end of the couple's musical partnership, but their marriage as well.

With a style honed in the gritty blues bars of Chicago's south side, the Butterfield Blues Band was instrumental in bringing the sound of authentic Chicago blues to a young white audience in the mid-'60s, and although the band wasn't a particularly huge commercial success, its influence has been enduring and pervasive. The band was formed when singer and harmonica player Paul Butterfield met guitarist and fellow University of Chicago student Elvin Bishop in the early '60s. Bonding over a love of the blues, the pair managed to hijack Howlin' Wolf's rhythm section (bassist Jerome Arnold and drummer Sam Lay) and began gigging in the city's blues houses, where they were spotted in 1964 by producer Paul Rothchild, who quickly had them signed to Elektra Records. Guitar whiz Mike Bloomfield joined the band just before they entered the studio to record their debut album (and in time to be on-stage with the group when they backed up Bob Dylan at his infamous electric set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival). Organist and pianist Mark Naftalin also came on board during the sessions for the self-titled The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, which was released by Elektra late in 1965. Lay became ill around this time, and his drum chair was taken by Billy Davenport, whose jazz and improvisational background came in handy during the recording of the band's second album, the Ravi Shankar-influenced East-West, released in 1966. Bloomfield departed to form Electric Flag in 1967, and Bishop handled all the lead guitar on the more R&B-oriented third album, The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw, which was released later that year and featured an entirely new rhythm section of Bugsy Maugh on bass and Phil Wilson on drums. Bishop and Naftalin left the band following the recording of 1968's In My Own Dream, and Butterfield drafted in 19-year-old guitarist Buzzy Feiten to help with the recording of 1969's Keep On Moving, which also featured the return of drummer Billy Davenport. After a live album in 1970 and the lackluster Sometimes I Just Feel Like Smilin', released in 1971, Butterfield put the band to rest. In retrospect, the Butterfield Blues Band had pretty much put their cards on the table in their first two albums, both of which are classics of the era, featuring a heady mixture of folk, rock, psychedelia, and even Indian classical music played over an embedded base of good old Chicago blues. ~by Steve Leggett

There's something human about a well-played harmonica, filled with life's breath. Otis Spann, Muddy Waters's great bandleader, once called the harmonica the mother of all instruments. And this collection of modern harmonica players is a mother. (Although without either of the Sonny Boy Williamsons or Little Walter, this album is decidedly not definitive.) Eighteen of the nineteen tracks are from the 1960s, and we can hear the tone baton being passed from Big Walter Horton to Charlie Musselwhite, from Junior Wells to Paul Butterfield, though set against radically different backdrops. James Cotton's 1966 tracks are a highlight, filled with the excitement of stepping into a solo career after a decade with Muddy. He is backed by his former bandmates, constrained by nothing except his wind. --Robert Gordon

Waters and Wolf do not perform together on this disc. The first half, recorded in Chicago, features Muddy backed by some of his regular '60s band members plus '60s U.S. blues-rockers Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield. Wolf occupies the second half, taken from the "London Howlin' Wolf Sessions" album. He's backed by British blues-influenced rockers including Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and the Stones' rhythm section. Despite the booklet's photo of Muddy and Wolf together, the notoriously paranoid Wolf had always regarded Muddy as a rival.

Despite their personal differences, Waters and Wolf were linked by their undeniable status as the prime architects of Chicago blues. The thematic tie here is their interaction with the generation of players who they inspired. As Muddy retains most of his usual band, his cuts differ little from his other late-'60s recordings (which is to say that they are eminently soulful and cathartic). Wolf's cuts are marked by the rock supersession vibe, but the assembled rock royalty manage to keep their egos in check, ably providing their hero with the angular, biting attack that is his trademark sound. This isn't the place to start with either Muddy or Wolf, but it's a more-than-interesting sideline to their careers.

Personnel Muddy Waters tracks (1-6): (Muddy Waters): Muddy Waters (vocals, slide guitar); Michael Bloomfield (guitar); Paul Butterfield, Jeff Carp (harmonica); Otis Spann (piano); Donald "Duck" Dunn, Phil Upchurch (bass); Sam Lay (drums).

Personnel Howlin' Wolf tracks (7-13): Howlin' Wolf (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Eric Clapton, Hubert Sumlin (guitar); Jeffrey M. Carp (harmonica); Steve Winwood, Ian Stewart, Lafayette Leake, John Simon (piano, organ); Bill Wyman, Phil Upchurch (bass, shakers, cow bell); Charlie Watts (drums, conga, percussion).
