The label here (Rockbeat) has made sure that absolutely not a shred of information has leaked out about this album, leading the Reverend on a wild goose chase across the internet to provide you good readers with some morsel that might be of interest. While the provenance of these recordings is suspect, so too is the date...according to Stephen Calt’s I’d Rather Be The Devil, Skip James spent much of 1965 either in the hospital or ill and unable to perform. More likely is that these live recordings of James and Bukka White are sourced from the August 1966 performances that were released, in part, by Verve Folkways as the 1967 Living Legends LP (which also included songs by Son House and Big Joe Williams), which dates them as somewhere in between the making of James’ first and second Vanguard Records albums. Anybody that has better info, let me know. But since both artists are legends of the blues, at a minimum this might be interesting to hear... By Reverend Keith A. Gordon

Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James (June 9, 1902 – October 3, 1969) was an American Delta blues singer, guitarist, pianist and songwriter. His guitar playing is noted for its dark, minor-key sound, played in an open D-minor tuning with an intricate fingerpicking technique. James first recorded for Paramount Records in 1931, but these recordings sold poorly, having been released during the Great Depression, and he drifted into obscurity.

After a long absence from the public eye, James was "rediscovered" in 1964 by three blues enthusiasts – John Fahey, Bill Barth, and Henry Vestine – helping further the blues and folk music revival of the 1950s and early 1960s. During this period, James appeared at folk and blues festivals, gave concerts around the country and recorded several albums for various record labels. His songs have influenced generations of musicians and have been adapted by numerous artists. He has been hailed as "one of the seminal figures of the blues.

As quiet as it was kept then, Skip James might have made the best music of anyone who resurfaced during the mid-'60s "rediscovery" era for Mississippi country blues types. Certainly, there weren't many albums made during that time as good as this one; wonderful vocals, superb guitar and a couple of tunes with tasty piano make this essential. ~Ron Wynn

These recordings, made in coffee houses during the folk boom and James' comeback after 30 years of obscurity, find him still in remarkable control of his talents. His guitar and piano playing are agile and sensitive and his high tenor still sends a shiver down the spine. The sound is very good (save for the occasional drop out), but more importantly the performances are first rate, and with a little imagination you can put yourself right there in the room with this enormous talent. ~Tim Sheridan

Hard Time Killin' Floor isn't the first Skip James collection, and one could bet it will not be the last. But Hard Time Killin' Floor makes a pretty good argument for itself: the hour-and-six-minute album holds all of James' early work, and it's been remastered. James' soulful vocal style, like Robert Johnson's, has often been noted, but his quick picking style is also distinctive. "I'm So Glad" is performed at an up-tempo, breakneck pace, and the finger work will leave the listener dizzy. The title cut, on the other hand, has a slow, lazy quality, with the blue notes of the guitar matching the singer's mournful cry. James was somewhat unique among blues guitarists in that he also played piano. His spunky gospel style is on full display on songs like "How Long Buck" and the bizarrely titled "Little Cow and Calf Is Gonna Die Blues." Of course Hard Time Killin' Floor wouldn't be complete without "Devil Got My Woman," the same song that would bring down the house at the Newport Folk Festival some 30 years later. The sound quality of these recordings, it should be noted, is a bit rough. This isn't a criticism; just something that should be noted for blues fans unfamiliar with the minefield of re-recording old songs from rare 78s. Yazoo and its engineers have made the best of a difficult situation, and for that, blues fans will be grateful. Interestingly, Yazoo, having extra room at the end of the CD, added four songs by another blues great, Son House. While the pairing might seem a bit odd, who'd complain about having four early Son House songs for free? Not this reviewer. ~Ronnie D. Lankford Jr

[2:19] 12. Otis Spann - Spann's Stomp
[2:49] 13. Pee Wee Crayton - Let The Good Times Roll

A dozen-plus-one tracks drawn from Vanguard Records' '60s-era rediscovery blues catalog, this sampler is OK as far as it goes, but it isn't anything special, save for Skip James' delicate version of his "I'm

So Glad," Mississippi John Hurt's gentle and mellow take on "Corrina, Corrina," and Otis Spann's piano workout on "Spann's Stomp." ~Steve Leggett

By the time James had been rediscovered in the 1960s, he was still capable of playing entrancing, dynamic music, but was much less consistent and not as striking a vocalist. It was a testimony to his greatness that he still managed to make compelling records, and he was among the best storytellers and dramatic singers in the traditional realm. This mid-'60s CD features songs James recorded for the Adelphi label in 1964 that were never issued. It's hard to understand why this wasn't issued at the time it was recorded; it's just as solid as the albums James recorded for Columbia during the same period. ~Ron Wynn

Skip James made his original reputation with 17 recordings that he cut during February 1931, when he was 28. Although fluent on both the guitar and (to a lesser extent) the piano, James was most notable for his storytelling lyrics, his haunting high-pitched voice, and his distinctive interpretations of the Delta blues. James was rediscovered 33 years after his early recordings, in time to appear at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. He was quite active during 1964-1966, making the music on this solo CD (his last record) three years before his death in 1969. One can easily hear the influence that Skip James' music had on the then flourishing folk music movement, and he still sang his country blues with great intensity. ~Scott Yanow

Considering the lack of liner notes, and with the original discs being easily obtainable, there's no reason to purchase this generic compilation even at a midline price. ~Al Campbell
