Janiva Magness has returned with her 17th album, Back for Me, produced by her longtime friend, producer, and collaborator Dave Darling. The album is a powerfully engaging, emotionally rich collection from a dynamic artist who continues to renew and redefine her widely celebrated relationship with the blues. Janiva’s far-ranging search for songs has unearthed a treasure chest of lesser-known gems by well-known artists (Bill Withers, Ray LaMontagne, Allen Toussaint, Doyle Bramhall II, Tracy Nelson, Irma Thomas) and deep-dive discoveries that connect with the rich feelings embodied in her voice and music, cherished by her fans. “I have always been into the B-sides,” she says. “There’s a freshness to doing a B-side rather than a well-known hit. I absolutely love the idea of shining a light on material that people are not familiar with.”

Back for Me is the 17th album for Magness, who has been honored with seven Blues Music Awards (including being named B.B. King Artist of the Year in 2009) and a Grammy Nomination for her 2016 album, Love Wins Again. In 2019, she published her memoir, Weeds Like Us, a vividly portrayed account of both the traumas of her youth (her parents’ suicides and her often-nightmarish experiences in the foster care system) and the hard-earned triumphs that have fueled her growth as an artist and in life. Darling anchors the album’s core band, also featuring drummer W.F. Quinn Smith and bassist Ian Walker, with keyboardists Sasha Smith and Phil Parlapiano, guitarists John Schroeder and Robert “Chalo” Ortiz, Nick Maybury, and blues harp player TJ Norton also appearing on various songs. Ace guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Sue Foley, and Jesse Dayton put their stamps on their respective special guest appearances.

It’s a powerhouse set moving from the Chicago-via-Texas churn of “Masterpiece” (written by Darling and featuring searing guitar from Bonamassa) to the aching gospel-soul-funk of Bill Withers’ “The Same Love That Made Me Laugh,” to the haunting resignation of Bramhall’s “November” and Nelson’s torch ballad “Down So Low,” to the sly release “Hittin’ on Nothin’” – written by Allen Toussaint and originally sung by Irma Thomas, and blasting guitar, courtesy of Jesse Dayton. She credits the band for bringing layers of dimensions to the songs. Aside from Darling, Parlapiano, and Schroeder, the main musicians were new to Magness, but as soon as the sessions began, she felt the fresh energy they brought.

“We tracked together live,” she says. “That’s one of the reasons that it sounds as solid as it does. And the other reason is because these guys have worked together on other albums with Dave and other projects, so they have a history. That brings an automatic intimacy to the backbone of the songs. And because they’re basically all a bunch of badasses.” It’s that vulnerability that Magness sought in songs as she put Back for Me together, a search that took her deep into the mines of the blues and R&B for material she could internalize and personalize. /Blues Magazine

[ 6:39] 11. All I Found (Feat Debbie Davies)
[ 6:43] 12. Serves Me Right To Suffer

A direct descendant from the traveling bundled artist packages of the '60s right down to its retro "hatch show"-styled cover art, Tommy Castro and his band play host to a relatively diverse assortment of high-energy blues and soul acts. The concept originated on the yearly Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise where such musical collaborations are typical. Castro's concept was to take that concept on the road, resulting in this dozen-track live album cherrypicked from various tour stops. It's a rollicking, very plugged-in affair, perhaps not surprisingly geared toward some of Castro's current crop of Alligator labelmates such as Janiva Magness, guitarist Michael Burks, and ex-Little Charlie & the Nightcats frontman-gone-solo Rick Estrin. Still, a handful of non-Alligator names like Debbie Davies, Joe Louis Walker, and "Sista" Monica Parker also appear. The varied collective features youngsters Trampled Underfoot as well as lesser-known veteran Theodis Ealey, both of whom handily hold their own next to the more popular participants. Castro takes lead vocals on four tracks, and he, along with his horn-enhanced band, provide backup for the majority of the other artists. Everyone is at the top of their game with an electricity and vein-popping excitement that can only be generated when musicians feed off each other live. Castro in particular seems to relish his master of ceremonies role, charging through a soulful version of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and a sizzling "Serves Me Right to Suffer." The latter suddenly shifts tempos from a cracking slow blues to a driving "Radar Love" boogie beat and displays his sometimes underappreciated guitar skills. Most impressive, and rather unexpected, is the number of females in the lineup, a refreshing change from the typically male-dominated blues field. Not only do guitarist Davies and vocalist Magness turn in some thrilling performances (Magness on a tough, horn-punched, swampily rearranged version of James Brown's "Think"), but Monica Parker's slow blues boils, and Trampled Underfoot's bass-playing lead singer Danielle Schnebelen's sexy/angry vocals will have you checking the liner notes to see who this newcomer is. Estrin adds both humor and harp to the generally guitar-oriented lineup with "My Next Ex-Wife," and Michael Burks' ten-minute grinding blues "Voodoo Spell" will make an instant believer of anyone who might not be familiar with his slashing guitar attack. The disc moves from one highlight to the next with the primary detriment being that it's not a double CD to provide more of what's here. Perhaps volume two is in order. ~Hal Horowitz

More piano-based and jazz-influenced than anything else, West Coast Blues is -- in actuality -- the California style, with all of the genre's main practitioners coming to prominence there, if not actual natives of the state in particular. In fact, the state and the style played host to a great many post-war Texas guitar expatriates, and their jazzy, T-Bone Walker style of soloing would become an earmark of the genre. West Coast blues also features smooth, honey-toned vocals, frequently crossing into urban blues territory. The West Coast style was also home to numerous jump-blues practitioners, as many traveling bands of the 1940s ended up taking permanent residence there. Its current practitioners work almost exclusively in the standard small-combo format.

Janiva Magness - Bury Him At The Crossroads

12. Ain't Lost Nothin' (4:11)
13. Eat The Lunch You Brought (5:21)

The voice gets you right between the eyes. As her powerful interpretation of the blues sweeps you off your feet, Janiva Magness captures your heart and soul as well. She belts 'em out with convincing authority. Her band provides a little bit country, a little bit traditional Delta blues, deeply passionate moments, and a little bit of modern chemistry. The singer clears the air with her riveting voice and forceful emphasis. With languorous, back porch, sit-a-spell ditties as well as up-front, dramatic affairs of the heart, Magness puts you right there, in the middle of every blues singer's foray. You can feel her gripping hold on you throughout the session.

She's included a little tongue-in-cheek humor on the album, too. "Wasn't That Enough" ends up abruptly in the middle of a beautiful acoustic guitar refrain. "Less and Less Of You" shuffles off playfully to the caring pleas of a woman who worries about her man. "Eat the Lunch You Brought" reminds us of the blue collar and no collar roots that we've known since the blues was born. Highly recommended, Bury Him At The Crossroads takes the listener on an adventure through blues history. /Jim Santella, All About Jazz

Janiva Magness - Do I Move You?

Year: 2006
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 41:17
Size: 95,6 MB
Styles: Contemporary blues
Scans: Full

1. I'm Just A Prisoner (Of Your Good Lovin') (3:48)
2. Workin' On Me Baby (3:50)
3. You Were Never Mine (4:32)
4. I Can't Stop Cryin' (3:19)
5. Don't Let Your Memories (2:53)
6. I Want You To Have Everything (2:49)
7. Do I Move You (4:35)
8. Bad Blood (4:09)
9. I Give Up (3:55)
10. Stealin' Sugar (4:05)
11. A Man Size Job (3:16)

As a three-time nominee for the WC Handy award for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year, Do I Move You shows that the accolade was no fluke. Janiva Magness follows up the terrific Bury Him at the Crossroads with a set that is even more varied and affecting. Co-produced once again with Colin Linden, Magness shifts from the tough Chicago shuffle of Willie Dixon's "Workin' on Me Baby" to the sax-peppered New Orleans rhythms of "I Can't Stop Crying" and the sensual, torchy Nina Simone title track. The singer's husky voice and sexy approach finds a perfect balance on arrangements that frame her vocals and provide enough support to keep Magness in the spotlight yet never overwhelm her.

Credit also needs to go to Jeff Turmes, who as multi-instrumentalist (bass, guitar, sax) and songwriter (he pens three terrific tunes) is nearly as integral to the album's success as Linden and Magness. Kicking off with a shot of Marcia Ball-ish brashness in a cover of "I'm Just a Prisoner (Of Your Good Lovin')," the singer shows why she's in the major leagues of contemporary R&B female vocalists. Her smooth yet feisty tone along with the subtle inflections and catches in her voice add an edge to any tune.

She proudly describes herself as a "hussie" in the liner notes and that spirit is shown on every track. Whether riffing off a Bessie Smith-styled attraction to younger lovers in "Stealin' Sugar" and the hard-rocking "A Man Sized Job," or lamenting a lost love in an exquisite cover of Delbert McClinton's "You Were Never Mine" (arguably her finest ballad cover), Magness flaunts her sexuality and sass with professionalism and class. She even strips the sound down to the acoustic Delta blues of Turmes' "Don't Let Your Memories," and proves she's nearly the vocal equal of Bonnie Raitt on that and the tough swamp funk of his "Bad Blood."

Lee Rogers' snappy, beach music '60s soul hit "I Want You to Have Everything" is unearthed and given a shot of energy, but it's on the slower songs that Magness really lays into the groove. With Do I Move You?, the singer has released a breakout album that should help her cross over from a blues audience into a mainstream success she so obviously deserves. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

10. Love To A Gunfight (3:46)
11. When It Rains (4:03)
12. Some Kind Of Love (3:16)

Janiva Magness has been nominated for twenty-seven Blues Music Awards. She won the BMA for “Contemporary Female Artist of the Year” five times. Magness is also the only female artist other than Koko Taylor to win a BMA as “Entertainer of The Year”. Currently Magness has received a 2018 nomination for last year’s “Blue Again” in the category of “Traditional Blues Female Artist of The Year”. She also received a Grammy award nomination in 2016.

This is Magness’ fourteenth album. The band includes Magness, vocals; producer Dave Darling, guitar; Davey Faragher, bass; Stephen Hodges, drums; Phil Parlapiano, piano; Arlan Schierbaum, keys; Doug Livingston, pedal steel and Dobro; and the horn section of Darrell Leonard, Joe Sublet and Alfredo Ballesteros. There are also seven background singers and numerous guest artists.

In 2013 the songwriting team of Magness and Darling won a BMA for “Song of The Year”. They have written four new songs. The opener “Back to Blues” is about the end of a relationship. The soulful song, featuring Darling’s guitar and Schierbaum on organ, contains the lyric “that’s what we do, you turn away, and I’m turning back to blue”.

“Hammer” is a contemporary song of protest featuring Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica. The title track “Love is An Army”, “sadness the enemy”, features Bryan Stephens on harmony vocals. “What’s That Say About You” is about lending a helping hand and perhaps my favorite song on this album as we really get to hear Magness’ beautiful voice.

“Tell Me” written by Darling is another socially conscious tune “Did you think your color meant you would somehow be exempt?” “On & On” was co-written by Colin Devlin and Darling and features Rusty Young from Poco on pedal steel. On “Home” Darling teamed up with songwriters Gary and Natasha Pinto and Cedric Burnside is featured on guitar.

Darling has also co-written three songs with the Australian songwriting team of Lauren Bliss and Andrew Lowdon. “Down Below” features Courtney Hartman, playing guitar and banjo, from the all female bluegrass band “Della Mae”. Also written by the trio are “Love to A Gunfight” and “When It Rains” both featuring Young. Bliss and Lowdon also contribute “Some Kind of Love” sung beautifully by Magness with just Parlapiano’s accompaniment.

“What I Could Do” is from Paul Thorn. It’s performed as a duet with guest vocalist Delbert McClinton.

Magness is adventurous as she stretches her blues and reaches into some Americana. ~Richard Ludmerer

Blues and soul singer Janiva Magness was no stranger to trouble and hard times growing up, and at her best, she pours that lifetime of emotion into her passionate phrasing and vocal delivery. Born in Detroit, Magness grew up with her father's blues and country record collection, as well as the city's wonderful Motown pop-soul sound, all of which shaped her style and approach as a musician. She lost both of her parents to suicide while in her early teens, and she ended up living on the streets, channeled through endless foster homes, before becoming pregnant at the age of 17 and being forced to give up the child for adoption.

Her personal and creative redemption came at an Otis Rush show in Minneapolis. Discouraged, stressed, and definitely underage, Magness snuck into the club and was transformed by Rush's performance. That was the moment, Magness maintains, that her vision of herself as a singer and musician began to take shape. She started out as a background singer, finally ending up in Phoenix in the early '80s, where she formed the Mojomatics, a popular local band. Magness next relocated to Los Angeles in 1986. A debut cassette, More Than Live, appeared in the mid-'90s, with her first CD, It Takes One to Know One, appearing in 1996, followed by three more independent releases. Magness signed with NorthernBlues Music and Bury Him at the Crossroads was issued by the label in 2004, with Do I Move You? following two years later in 2006.

Magness began to draw a lot of critical and fan attention, particularly in the blues community, and her career was in full swing, garnering an armful of blues awards. She signed with Alligator Records in 2008, which issued What Love Will Do that same year, following it with The Devil Is an Angel Too in 2010 and Stronger for It in 2012. Original, which featured a dozen original Magness songs, appeared from her own Fat Head Records imprint in 2014. Pairing with Blue Élan Records to increase Fat Head's distribution, she delivered Love Wins Again, a confident and soulful meditation on the power of love, in early 2016. The following year saw the release of an EP, Blue Again. ~ Steve Leggett

In the space between the notes you can hear a performer who has survived a difficult life by anyone's measure to become one of the top blues vocalists of her generation, only the second woman, after blues legend Koko Taylor, to win the coveted B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award. Blue Again collects Magness' interpretations of a half dozen classics from the blues canon and beyond, including numbers made famous by Bo Diddley, Freddie King, Etta James, and Nina Simone.

Born in Detroit, Magness was inspired by the blues and country she heard listening to her father’s record collection, and by the vibrant music of the city’s classic Motown sound. By her teenage years, though, her life was in chaos. Having lost both parents to suicide as a young girl, traversed through 12 foster homes and given up a child for adoption by age 17 left Magness in the deepest despair.

She sought solace in music and began going to as many blues shows as possible, soaking up the sounds of her favorite artists, including Johnny Copeland, Otis Rush and Albert Collins. She immersed herself in records by James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and all the other R&B greats. Experiencing these artists live and listening to their recordings sparked Janiva and gave her life new direction and purpose.

Magness’ new album Love Wins Again is yet another evolutionary step for the soulful, elegant, award-winning singer-songwriter. It’s 11 core songs and two bonus tracks are built on a sonically sophisticated architecture that’s in full service of Magness’ remarkably flexible and generous voice—which can flow smoothly as champagne or churn up gravel on command. The album’s title is a mantra that resonates throughout: the concept of love as a physical, psychic and spiritual force that has the strength to conquer negativity, sadness and personal demons.

Love Wins Again marks Magness’ fifth collaboration with four-time Grammy nominated producer Dave Darling, whose instincts compel Magness to tap her deepest creative powers and lead her songs to unpredictable places. He has become her key songwriting foil and is the primary architect of the album’s gorgeous textural sound, which blends acoustic and electric instruments, flourishes of Latin percussion, horns and an enlightened approach to the studio to create perfect settings for her vocal prowess. And there’s more than range and craft to Magness’ voice. Her singing rings with sincerity. Since launching her career with 1992’s More Than Live, she has grown to become an accomplished storyteller and diviner of the heart.

Following up her last album is no easy task. Original, from 2014, marked her place as a songwriter and raised the creative bar for her collaborations with Darling. It entered the Billboard blues chart, where her releases routinely appear, at number five and topped the blues radio charts. Original also scored her seventh Blues Music Award, for Contemporary Blues Female Artist. In addition, the album received a Best Song nomination for “Let Me Breathe,” co-written with Darling. The same honor was bestowed upon the songwriting team in 2013 for “I Wont’ Cry”. Altogether, Magness has been nominated for 25 Blues Music Awards and follows the legendary Koko Taylor as the second woman to win the highly coveted B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award.

It's a long way from Michigan to the West Coast, but Janiva Magness didn't lose a bit of that great Detroit R&B influence when she made the trip. She gained a dedicated, ardent fan base in the L.A. area and she enlisted some of the area's finest for this one. Kirk Fletcher and Kid Ramos tear it up on guitar. Songwriter Jeff Turmes plays bass and contributes some fine songs, particularly the slow smoker "The More I Keep on Losin'." Brother Red Young lays down some greasy B3, especially on the Ray Charles/Percy Mayfield tune "Tell Me How Do You Feel." And Magness is a little powerhouse throughout, just as comfortable shifting from Ruth Brown to James Brown. Fun stuff. ~Ann Wickstrom

Janiva Magness hasn't recorded any of her own compositions since she cut "Good Car" on It Takes One to Know One, her 1997 debut. Here she makes up for lost time with three compelling co-writes with producer David Darling. The tunes are some of the most potent on an album with no shortage of powerful material. There's a hint of Stax in the arrangement of "There It Is," the nasty kiss-off that opens the set. Darling's gritty guitar and Matt Teco's drums provide an ominous stomping rhythm to set off Magness' snarling vocal. When she sings, "I never thought I'd wanna hurt a man so bad," it sends chills down your spine. "I Won't Cry" visits the same heartbroken territory, but with a quiet intensity. Magness dips into her throaty mid-range to profess, "I get cut and I might bleed, but I won't cry." It's a great tag line supported by Darling's simmering lead and haunting B-3 by Arlan Oscar. "Whistling in the Dark" delivers more simmering Southern soul as Magness delivers the tale of a long-suffering spouse who knows the truth, but is unable to leave the relationship. The rest of the program is made up of her usual selection of well-chosen covers. "Make It Rain" from Tom Waits' Real Gone album is transformed into an old-time blues with Magness and Darling's guitar engaging a lively call and response. Magness shows off her range here, slipping from her growling mid-range up to a sorrowful shriek. On most of the album, she displays a muted, simmering side, delivering the bad news with understated intensity. Ike Turner's "You Got What You Wanted" uses a funky New Orleans rhythm to support a vocal that flips between rage and resignation. Grace Potter's "Ragged Company" is a quiet, introspective look at life's unpleasant truths, and Gladys Knight's "I Don't Wanna Do Wrong" is a slow, sexy R&B burner that delves into the dark allure of infidelity with a sinister groove and Magness delivering one of her most wrenching vocals. The album closes with Ray Wylie Hubbard's "Whoop and Holler," a gospel song that lives up to its title with the band supplying unrestrained whoops and handclaps to support Magness' jubilant vocal. ~j. poet

Various - Blues 66 (3 parts)

“(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66”, often rendered simply as “Route 66”, is a popular song and rhythm and blues standard, composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup. It was first recorded in the same year by Nat King Cole, and was subsequently covered by many artists including Chuck Berry in 1961, The Rolling Stones in 1964, and Depeche Mode in 1987. The song’s lyrics follow the path of the U.S. Route 66 highway, which used to run a long distance across the U.S., going from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California.

But regardless of length and coverage, Route 66 stands alone among American thoroughfares with regard to history and lore. Jazz, blues, folk, R&B and rock n’ roll have all traveled along the nation’s most iconic stretch of blacktop.

Swamp Blues, the looser, more rhythmic variation of the standard Louisiana sound, also brings more contemporary elements of New Orleans, zydeco, soul music, and Cajun to bear on its style. The guitar work is simple but effective, and is heavily influenced by the boogie patterns used on Jimmy Reed records, with liberal doses of Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters. Unlike the heavy backbeat of the more popular urban styles, its rhythm can be best described as laid-back, making even its most uptempo offerings share the same mood and ambience of the most desultory of slow blues.

Any year that you get a new Janiva Magness CD is guaranteed to be a good one, so tighten your wigs and crank up the stereo because on June 24th, 2014 the award-winning singer and songwriter will release her new album, titled Original, on her own indie Fathead Records label.

Original offers eleven songs that feature Magness' usual mix of blues, roots-rock, and soul music. Working again with producer Dave Darling, Magness lays her soul bare with a brutal slate of songs that present the artist at her most transparent. Inspired by the end of her 17-year marriage, and more deaths of friends and relatives than a person should have to endure in such a short timeframe, Magness co-wrote seven of the album's songs, backing up her words with some of the most powerful vocal performances of her career.

"I always want to push myself," Magness explains in a press release for Original, "but this album demanded a high level of vulnerability to tell the absolute truth in every song, holding nothing back. It was frightening, at times, to be so raw in public. Dave drove me and even tricked me when he needed to. This is also an album that couldn't be made with another record company, because we needed to be able to go wherever we wanted musically to tell its stories."

On top of her personal tragedies, Magness faced a seemingly insurmountable obstacle when a December 2012 surgery left her unable to speak or sing. She was forced to regain control of her remarkable instrument, a journey assisted by L.A. based vocal coach Nate Lamm for helping her sing again, with an even greater range and control than before. The injury came at an inopportune time, following the release of her Blues Music Award nominated Alligator Records release Stronger For It and just prior to her BMA win as "Contemporary Blues Female Vocalist of the Year."

"I've always wanted life to be simpler than it is," says Magness. "When I was a young girl, and then a young woman, I really yearned for that. Now I'm a full-grown woman and I understand that life is never black and white. Losing loved ones, losing attachments and relationships, and grieving over it all are things we have to live with. If we can get through that with our souls intact, we learn how to become stronger and to move on with hope and dignity toward whatever comes next." ~By Reverend Keith A. Gordon
