Dubbed by the British press as “the king of slide guitar”, Troy Redfern shows no sign of abdicating his throne on his upcoming release The Fire Cosmic. Harnessing the all-pervasive spiritual energy and irresistible power of the universe, this is a conflagrant listen of galactic proportions.

If you prefer the prudent territory of half measures and uninspiring neutrality of sitting on the fence, then prepare to be knocked off your perch. Recorded at the famous Rockfield Studios in North Wales, the gargantuan wall of noise manifests the (kind of) magic previously laid down here by rock ‘n’ roll aristocracy – most notably Queen and Black Sabbath.

It’s a massive sounding record and one that is heavily flanked by the powerhouse credentials of sticksman Derby Todd (The Darkness, Gary Moore, Paul Gilbert), who according to Redfern “set the tone for everything else.” Virtuoso bass guitarist Dave Marks (Hans Zimmer), and a guest appearance from subliminal six-stringer Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (yes, the one who kept teasing Guns ‘N’ Roses fans with Chinese Democracy) further stir the exceptional musicianship melting pot into something special.

Opener “Scorpio” spits venom and quickly announces the birth of a genuinely inspired long player of unremitting bluesy rock n’ roll attitude. Prepare to be entranced by the searing pre-chorus which blasts into snarly defiance as the band leader smokes “It’s sure time to burn, now the tables have turned.”

In his recent interview with Blues Rock Review, Redfern described the first single “Waiting For Your Love” as “Johnny Hooker Boogie with that rock production glossing over it” and he couldn’t be more on the money if he fell into a casino slot machine. It steam-rollers over holy ground and tramples through the swampy morass to create three and a half minutes of valorous grit and humble grind. The perfect showcase for the warm and buttery tone of Redfern’s 1929 National Triolian steel guitar, it’s little wonder this track continues to gather rave reviews across the board.

“Love And War” brings a temporary retreat on the battlefield in this terrific mid-tempo number that lights up the funk with a pulsing shuffle, not to mention another epic chorus and unconventional guitar solo that master in emotion.

Despite the high-octane approach, there are still some beautifully crafted moments of calm away from the heavy armor. Redfern shows his sensitive side in the second single “Ghosts” which has a distinct Americana blend throughout a rousing journey of unrequited love.

“Saving Grace” gnaws even closer to the bone with its stripped back approach and heartfelt slide work, while closing track “Stone” memorably builds to an anthemic crescendo after some haunting backing vocals and a glorious web of interwoven electric and acoustic guitars. This album standout ends with some atmospheric piano from Marks (the same one used on Bohemian Rhapsody) to offer a welcome escape from reality.

Popularised by the American bluesman of the early 20th century, it is Redfern’s ability to inject a contemporary arrangement into one of the oldest guitar styles out there that marks him out as a rising star and unique talent. The Review: 8.5/10 ~Breton Towler

Troy Redfern combines the rawness of Hound Dog Taylor, the free-form approach of Sonny Sharrock, the firebrand playing of Johnny Winter and the technique of Dave Hole, mixed with the ghost of Elmore James'.

There's something about the Welsh marches. As guitarist Troy Redfern tells it, he grew up in the shadow of Hergest Ridge, made famous by Mike Oldfield. The Welsh borders - roughly that area between Hay on Way, Brecon and Hereford - might not quite evoke the arresting geography and climate of say Louisiana, but there's something about the freedom of that area...

It all fits perfectly into Troy Redfern's world. He's a passionate, intense, free spirited indie blues artist whose ferocious slide guitar style twists and turns timeless themes and ideas to his own ends. In the studio, the multi instrumental slide guitarist and producer is a one man band who painstakingly pays attention to the minutiae of his tone, the imaginary arrangements and noir filled lyrics.

As a band leader he's trusting enough to know that wherever his spontaneity takes him he has a locked in rhythm section that will push him to the limit while also giving him a safety net. Back in the studio, he does it all himself, and it's hard to grasp his unrelenting energy.

He's a musical visionary unafraid to trample on the boundaries of restricting labels. His talent spans ferocious slide playing, thoughtful production, passionate vocals and an approach to contemporary indie blues that references delta blues roots, while turning familiar emotions, themes and riffs from a bygone era into a broad based contemporary musical template.

Troy ushers us into a restless, musical journey that spans big musical vistas. He's a guitarist for whom tone, feel and grooves are his working tools and while his songs range from a whisper to a scream, he performs a balancing act between pure spontaneity and deep grooves.

His music is physical, engaging and emotive and worthy of hip references like indie blues, except it's backed up by real substance and stretched to the limit by virtuoso solos. When you listen to Troy Redfern you're buying into a new world vision where his high energy approach uncompromisingly hits you in the guts before making a cerebral connection. ~Pete Feenstra - Blues Matters Magazine

An album of great raw rockin’ blues with super slide. A powerhouse of a band to get the adrenaline pumping! From Herefordshire the Troy Redfern Band are fronted on vocals and guitar by Troy Redfern, with Stuart McDonald on bass and Phil Greenhouse on drums. All the tracks on the album are self penned.

The opening number sets the scene for the rest of the album with ‘It Stacks’, a high octane rockin’ track with plenty of wild slide. Following an up tempo rockin’ blues ‘The Other Side’ with hints of ZZ Top, a great take. Slowing the pace, another slide driven blues number ‘Salavation’, with a hard working rhythm section. Back to the high energy rock with ‘Wildfire’, then an acoustic intro’ on ‘What Goes Round’ building up to a classic rock number. A haunting bluesy track, with great drum beat and some impressive guitar work on ‘War Cry’. Then a very George Thorogood style blues rock number ‘Backdoor Hoodoo’ with great slide, gritty vocals, and some class harmonica input, one of my favourites on the album. Bringing in some authentic blues roots with ‘Lamb Of Zion’ and some great acoustic slide gave us an interesting change. Then rockin’ it up again with ‘Back Home’ and a heavier rock number ‘Running With Ghosts’, both great takes. The final track on this well put together album was ‘Survive’. It has a great intro’ with a pounding slow beat on this blues rock number. Some great musicianship from this formidable trio, that created a huge sound and exciting musical input. A great listen. ~Rosy Greer
