A soulful blues singer in the mold of Bobby "Blue" Bland or Z.Z. Hill, Floyd Miles is probably best known for his tenure with the Allman Brothers during the group's early years and for his later work with Clarence Carter. Crazy Man marks Miles' solo recording debut, cut with friends like Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Edgar Winter and Root Boy Slim. The title Crazy Man to the contrary, Miles is more adept on the record's more mellow, laidback numbers; the harder blues tunes leave him behind. ~Jason Ankeny

Recorded at FAME Studios at Muscle Shoals in Alabama. It's like a coming-home for Gregg since he worked in the same studio some 50 years ago with his and brother Duane's band, Hour Glass. Commensurate with his own talents, Gregg recruited his touring band as the studio backup to his goodbye album. He sings what could be hanging memories of his own life. Gregg's only original composition as a co-writer, "My Only True Friend", crystallizes his love of a life continuously road bound coupled with the realization that the road is coming to an end. Few blues-rock ballads, if any, beat this ghostly song. The guitar work packs it home.

Gregg Allman was drawn to the blues his entire life because he felt it drawing all around him. And that's why his interpretation of Willie Dixon's "I Love the Life I Live" competes with Muddy Waters or of any bluesman. He certainly vies with Lowell George's classic, "Willin'", and he somehow defines the Grateful Dead's "Black Muddy River". That last one's a real rust dripper. It's in these two songs in which Gregg's soul triumphs over adversity. He knew they were meant for him.

Maybe Gregg's most interesting characteristic was that the blues didn't inflect everything he thought about music. He had that other musical personality that was beholden to both soul music and the singer-songwriter movement. The old Percy Sledge tune, "Out of Left Field", has those soulful horns turn up as if they came right out of Stax Records along with Gregg's soulful vocals. ~Dave Fever Tree Sigmon

Anyone would have given the frontman of the Allman Brothers Band a sabbatical from performing after the longstanding group called it quits last year. After all, between solo tours and work with the Brothers, Gregg Allman has been grinding it out on the road for over forty years. After recent health problems including lung surgery, a liver transplant, hepatitis C all on top of a life of booze and drugs (he’s been clean for a while now) also don’t bode well for Allman’s stamina as he pushes 70. But like the blues legends that initially influenced him, Allman keeps plugging away. And, judging from the rousing 90 minute concert he delivers on this double CD/DVD package, has arguably improved with age.

Recorded at a single gig in January, 2014 in the titular city where it all started for the Allman Brothers Band four decades ago, Gregg mixes rearranged gems from his old group along with solo material, some cool soul covers and even a new song into a set that highlights his diversity and love of R&B and blues. His eight piece backing unit includes three horn players working taut arrangements that steep the material in a Memphis styled soulful grit. With only one guitarist, the sound is less rock oriented than the ABB. This helps make even warhorses like “Whipping Post,” “Statesboro Blues” and “Midnight Rider,” classics Allman has sung at almost every gig since the early 70s, seem fresh and stirring in this environment.

Oddly, Allman only reprises one selection from his newest, well received, T-Bone Burnett album of blues covers (a second tune is included in the DVD’s extras) but this includes everything you would expect to hear. He revisits the Ray Charles nugget “Brightest Smile in Town,” digs into Wilson Pickett’s “I’ve Found a Love” and rocks out on “Love like Kerosene,” a recent composition written by guitarist Scott Sharrard. Allman is in inspired voice, he’s clearly having a blast leading his talented musicians and even the oldest material feels revitalized. Perhaps we could have done without the 5 minute drum and bass solo section on the closing “One Way Out,” but with son Devon Allman joining on guitar, that’s a small detriment to a scorching version.

Short interview segments on the DVD are concise and informative and the camerawork is professional yet subtle and appropriately laid back. The elder Allman plays nearly as much guitar as organ, likely due to a terrific pianist Ben Stivers who is nearly as impressive as Chuck Leavell on the keys, but that’s also a welcome change. However, why the two extra songs tacked on as DVD bonuses aren’t added to the audio discs is unclear, especially since one is a brilliantly bluesy “Stormy Monday.”

Regardless, this is a glorious “hittin’ the note” performance with no weak spots. It shows Allman not only hasn’t lost any steps musically, but he just may be near the top of his game. ~by Hal Horowitz

Various - All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs & Voice Of Gregg Allman (2-Disc set)

On January 10, 2014, a multi-generational assortment of musicians from the worlds of rock, blues and country joined together at Atlanta's historic Fox Theatre for a once-in-a-lifetime all-star performance to pay tribute to the life and music of the legendary singer/musician/songwriter Gregg Allman. That live musical event can now be experienced via the new multimedia package All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman.

Shot in high definition video with 5:1 Dolby sound, this one-DVD, two-CD package captures the four-hour concert event in its entirety. The show features a diverse assortment of high-profile Allman admirers paying tribute to the iconic veteran rocker, delivering distinctive new performances of classic material drawn from his four and a half decades as a recording artist, encompassing his landmark work with the legendary Allman Brothers Band as well as his parallel solo career. The variety of the artists paying tribute to Allman, and the diversity of their interpretations of his songs, attests to the broad appeal of Allman's talents, which transcend stylistic and generational boundaries.

With musical direction by noted producer/musician Don Was, several of the guest performers are drawn from the Allman Brothers Band's extended musical family, including current ABB guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (who also appears here with his wife and frequent musical partner Susan Tedeschi) and Gregg's talented son Devon Allman. The prestigious slate of performers also includes such Allman contemporaries as Jackson Browne, Dr. John, John Hiatt, Taj Mahal, Wet Willie singer Jimmy Hall and classic soul man Sam Moore (of Sam and Dave fame), along with such younger acts as Robert Randolph, Keb' Mo', Widespread Panic and Pat Monahan of Train. The world of country music, long a key component in Allman's musical consciousness, is represented here by such notable guest performers as Eric Church, Trace Adkins, Vince Gill, Martina McBride, Zac Brown, Brantley Gilbert and Jess Franklin.

All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman would not be complete without Allman's own authoritative voice, which is spotlighted here on collaborative readings of landmark tunes with Gregg's onetime L.A. roommate Jackson Browne ("These Days," "Melissa"), Vince Gill and Zac Brown ("Midnight Rider") and Taj Mahal ("Statesboro Blues"). Gregg also joins with the Allman Brothers Band to deliver fiery readings of the classics "Dreams" and "Whipping Post," which precede a set-closing "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," performed by the show's full cast. With the recent announcement that the Allman Brothers Band will cease touring at the end of 2014, these may be among the last recordings of the band on stage.

The All My Friends show also features a prestigious house band that includes Don Was on bass, former Allman Brothers Band members Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Jack Pearson (guitar), ex-Black Crowes guitarist Audley Freed, Wallflowers keyboardist Rami Jaffee and renowned drummer-to-the-stars Kenny Aronoff. As Allman later enthused, "That show was one of the highlights of my life. It was great to see old friends, and everyone was so gracious and really poured their souls into my songs. It was a very special night."
