Vanessa Collier - Do It My Own Way

Size: 72.0 MB
Time: 30:39
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2024
Styles: Blues, Funk, Soul
Art: Front

01. Elbow Grease (2:39)
02. Do It My Own Way (2:36)
03. Take Me Back (4:09)
04. Wild As A Rainstorm (4:13)
05. Shoulda Known Better (3:38)
06. Just One More (4:18)
07. Rosetta (3:55)
08. Warrior (5:08)

Look no further than the title of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Vanessa Collier’s sixth offering, to understand that she is something of a Renaissance artist who has earned the right to call the shots.
On Do It My Own Way, out Sept. 13, Collier not only pens the songs but plays alto and tenor sax, flute, slide and resonator guitars, along with engineering overdubs on backing vocals and various instruments at her home studio.

Her talents over the past decade have not been ignored. She has been nominated twelve times (!) for Blues Music Awards (won four) and her previous 2020 studio collection spent nine weeks on Billboard’s Blues Album Chart. The follow-up concert disc revealed her explosive live show.

This diverse recording shifts from the retro-styled, gospel inflected, hip-shaking party tune “Rosetta,” about her idol Sister Rosetta Tharpe (“I’d like to follow in her footsteps… She’s carried the torch so I can see a little bit better”) to the funky fun of “Shoulda Known Better” (tearing it up on honking tenor sax) and gets good and greasy for the swaggering title cut.

There are more slippery grooves on the opening “Elbow Grease” where trumpeter Doug Woolverton solos, grabbing some Tower of Power vibe as Collier multi-tracks her own blustery chorus singing “Put some stank on it.”

That she does.

We get a breather midway through the eight tunes as Collier displays her softer, soulful side on “Wild as a Rainstorm.” The lyrics of personal empowerment refer to the album’s title as she sings to a friend, and/or the listener “I’ve learned to stay strong/When they say that I can’t or I won’t succeed/‘Cause what do they know?” with the assurance and confidence of one who has been there and successfully emerged out the other side. The R&B vibe highlights how powerful and distinctive a vocalist she is, an ability that gets a little lost on the predominantly upbeat program.

Collier wades into the swamp for “Take Me Back,” another soulful slice with a wiry backbeat allowing her to crank out a torchy sax solo before singing a kiss-off to her ex with “Take me back to brighter days…Take me back to the beginnin’/Before I ever, I ever knew you/Before I ever… met you.” Guitarist Laura Chavez also gets a spotlight.

On the sultry “Just One More, we move into a sexy, torchy Latin mode not far from something the late Willy DeVille might have recorded. The opening lines of “I had squeezed into the velvet corner of a candlelit bar/When he asked me to dance” sets the scene as Collier recounts how she became infatuated with a stranger who “had a way about him.” Sizzling stuff.

In the closing “Warrior,” Collier begins solo acoustic telling of a woman who is out for retribution after her house is torched, letting her resonator guitar sound like the anger welling up in the protagonist’s veins. The dramatic folk-blues gradually morphs into a mesmerizing mid-tempo rocker. It’s vibrant, dramatic, and a change from the album’s generally lighter lyrical tone.

The only disappointment of the impressive Do It My Own Way is that at just over a half hour, we’d like to hear more from this wildly talented veteran who keeps getting better with every release. ~Hal Horowitz

11. Heart On The Line (4:20)

My fourth CD, titled Heart On The Line, includes 11 songs, with 8 of my originals (lyrics and music all written by me) and 3 covers, James Brown’s Superbad, Randy Newman’s Leave Your Hat On, and a song covered by Bonnie Raitt, written by Maia Sharp and Liz Rose, I Don’t Want Anything To Change.

This album is focused on songwriting and brings together my diverse inspirations and ideas and, on this album especially, more of my personality. There are stories of dealing with people that always need one more thing before they’re happy, stories about giving so much of yourself that you have to pull back sometimes, and stories about growing up and finding yourself.

Similar to my previous records, the songs on Heart on the Line pay respect to the traditions and roots of blues music, but branch out with my own blend of rock, funk, gospel, NOLA, and soul grooves and, of course, my love of the saxophone. Each song is different and I hope you find a favorite (or two or three…)!!

Vanessa Collier - Honey Up

Year: 2018
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 44:57
Size: 103,9 MB
Styles: Blues (various styles)
Scans: Full

1. Sweatin' Like A Pig, Singin' Like An Angel (4:53)
2. Don't Nobody Got Time To Waste (3:37)
3. Honey Up (4:53)
4. Percolatin' (5:00)
5. Icarus (3:48)
6. The Fault Line (3:41)
7. Bless Your Heart (3:35)
8. You're A Pill (4:04)
9. You Get What You Get (3:26)
10. Love Me Like A Man (7:55)

Vanessa Collier is fearless. She’s been on the rise ever since graduating from the esteemed Berklee College of Music in 2013. Building a reputation as one of the most charismatic live performers in blues today, Vanessa has wowed audiences worldwide, already received multiple BMA nominations, and the backing of a major record label. Yet, she’s decided to self-release this one, with momentum in her favor.

To simply call her a blues artist doesn’t paint the whole picture. She’s a multi-genre musician, playing deep funk, soul, jam band, and rock in addition to blues. She could also do a wonderful job playing jazz if pressed. She’s a multi-instrumentalist too, handling alto, tenor and soprano saxes in addition to guitars. Her music is joyous as she never fails to bring an audience to their feet. Yet, it’s more than just a show. An award-winning songwriter, Collier writes most of her own material including nine of these ten on Honey Up. She brings a pulsating, driving intensity to all of it, including the cover of Chris Smither’s “Love Me Like a Man,” popularized by Bonnie Raitt, and a crowd favorite in Collier’s live shows.

Accompanied by her well-travelled road band (Nick Stevens - drums, Nick Trautmann – bass, Sparky Parker - guitar, and William Gorman – keyboards), Collier also enlists the support of master guitarist Laura Chavez, who also appeared on her previous album, as well as Quinn Carson (trombone) and Doug Woolverton (trumpet) for half of the tracks, featuring some ensemble horn parts. Collier is primarily an alto saxophonist with a soulful style that evokes Cannonball Adderley and Lou Donaldson; and a honking vibrato that calls to mind Jr. Walker.

She kicks off with the horn-infused stomper “Sweatin’ Like a Pig, Singin’ Like An Angel,” and follows with NOLA second line brass effects on “Don’t Nobody Got Time to Waste.” Here, as throughout the album, Vanessa mixes in her own background vocals. Hers is the album’s only voice. Gorman’s clavinet signals the funk of the title track which continues into the instrumental “Percolatin’,” driven by Trautmann’s bass line and Collier on tenor. The sound of Collier’s acoustic guitar and soprano sax yields to rather breezy soul for “Icarus.” The blaring horns return for “Fault Line,” which rocks hard and includes all the players, highlighted by Chavez’s scorching guitar.

The swampy “Bless Your Heart” is a slight departure from most of the album has it has both Collier and her guitarist, Sparky Parker, on resonators with Collier taking a defiant feminine stance: “Don’t call me sweetheart, don’t call me your baby….” The full ensemble returns for the swinging horn-driven tune, “You’re a Pill.” This one, as much as any tune, and especially Collier’s alto solo, clearly echoes Jr. Walker. “You Get What You Get” has some Crescent City piano from Gorman and carries a Dr. John vibe.

This album reflects Collier’s live act: animation, charisma, and a strong command of all those classic sounds from the deep South, Memphis, New Orleans, Detroit, and Chicago. You owe it to yourself to catch her live. She’s one of a kind. /Jim Hynes, Elmore Magazine

Take a floor-filling London soul man. Add a golden-voiced Southern States storyteller. Throw in a fast-rising Philadelphia based singer/saxophonist. Then hold on to your hats. Recorded at the 14th February 2017 in the Hirsch Club in Nuernberg, the most varied Blues Caravan comes back to life.

You can rely on Si Cranstoun to move your feet. Inspired by the vintage soul of Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, this charismatic British bandleader has graduated from an apprenticeship busking on the streets of London to the head of the vintage R&B scene. You hear hip-shaking original material from last year’s acclaimed Old School album – plus fan-favourite singles like “Coupe De Ville” – delivered in a voice like sunshine. “It’s most important that I don’t come off as an imitator,” Si explains, “and also that the song I’m singing has a kick-ass melody, whether it’s my own or on loan. I love to play ‘Old School’, ‘Coupe De Ville’ and ‘Run Free’, as they get the crowd going.

Some say that great American bluesmen are a dying breed. They’re wrong – and Big Daddy Wilson is the proof. Born in North Carolina, his astonishing backstory includes several years of service in the US Army, followed by his discovery of the blues and relocation to Germany. In 2009, Wilson’s Ruf debut Love Is The Key showcased a voice that could stop traffic, and since then, his career highlights have included victory at the 2010 German Blues Challenge and recognition for his acoustic work with the title of Best Blues Artist at the 2014 Blues In Germany Awards. “For my Blues Caravan performance,” he says, “you can expect that I’ll be true to the BDW storytelling vibe and having a lot of fun. What’s very important to me is to be able to connect with people. Write songs that everyone can relate to and make someone smile.”

Vanessa Collier is going places. A graduate of the Berklee College Of Music, Vanessa’s pure vocals and stinging saxophone work saw her light up stages as part of Joe Louis Walker’s band, while her 2014 debut album Heart Soul & Saxophone was declared “magnificent” on Dan Aykroyd’s blues radio show winning her accolades as a Best of 2014 Blues Breaker. With her original songs and onstage charisma, Vanessa’s set is a high point of the Blues Caravan, while she’s looking forward to turning up the heat alongside her fellow performers. “I think that wonderful things happen when you get more than one artist in a room,” she explains. “With Big Daddy Wilson, Si Cranstoun and me, we all have our own styles and personalities onstage that will meld well together.
