Dee's Honeytones - Hot Damn

02. Loving Man (2:02)

04. Treat Me Like A Queen (3:01)
05. Buzzing Around My Hive (2:14)

10. Dripping Honey (2:46)
11. I Got My Eye On You (3:55)
12. Stay Away From Me (1:38)
13. Oh Baby (2:20)

Thirteen originals by Mars and Dee and two covers. It opens with the swinging and featuring “Hot Damn”. When played live, people start to jive. Variation is the keyword on their cd which was recorded live in the studio in only a couple of takes. Session player extraordinaire Emiel was added to play all the tenor and baritone sax parts on the album.
Not only swinging rockabilly is on the bands menu, but also pinches of rhythm and blues (I got my eye on you, I’m just a tease) and some chunks of country, hillbilly (stay away from me) were added, to make it everybody’s favorite dish. All done in the best possible taste without losing the rawness and intensity. From the autobiographical “Hot Date” to the naughty “Dripping Honey”.

Take a load of old vintage rhythm and blues, a pinch of western swing, add some rockabilly and you got yourself boppin’ rhythm and blues!
With Dee-Ann (singer, piano and rhythm guitar player). She’s teaming up with the Nightcaptains double bassplayer Mars, completed with fabulous guitarplayer Pat and (babe magnet) Little Joe on drums to hit the stage and set it on fire. They played at festivals in The Netherlands and Belgium, but are ready for the rest of the world!
Dee’s Honeytones play mostly original material inspired by various forties and fifties boppin’ blues, rockabilly and swinging jive greats from Elmore James, Barbara Pittmann, Etta James.

“King of the World” is the new Roots Rhythm & Blues group from the Netherlands. Legendary guitarist Erwin Java decided to form a band after the dead of his buddy and blues legend Harry Muskee, with whom he played for over 25 years in Cuby & the Blizzards. The guitarist also known for his work with Jan Akkerman, Larry Carlton and Herman Brood got in lead singer and bass player Ruud Weber, known for his work with Snowy White, Hammond player Govert van der Kolm who played with artist like Coco Montoya, Matt Schofield and Monster Mike Welch, and drummer Fokke de Jong who’s been in the drum seat of the number one dialect band Normaal for over 20 years.
After their first rehearsals in beginning 2012, the rumour started going around the Netherlands and within weeks the first try-outs were booked and sold-out. Soon there was talk of a new superband.
King of the World’s name refers to an old John Lee Hooker song and of course to the three Kings, Albert, Freddy and BB King.
With a wide variety of roots combined with 3 parts harmony singing, they developed their own sound in songs they wrote and performed throughout 2012. This resulted in their recently released debut CD “Can’t go home” that received raving reviews and got them on the Dutch Album charts, National Radio and Television shows.

Lefthand Freddy has by now become an institute in Holland but also abroad considering the many international praises in the foreign media. With a record contract in hand the 3 piece band was formed in 1992.Their first cd “Buried in blues” met with good reviews right from the start:

(blues magazine ) Block wrote: “ top notch authentic blues that should make every Dutchman proud” .

Dagblad v.h. Noorden: “Fred Reining should be classified as being one of the most original blues artists, he is by far the most creative blues guitarist in the country”.

Second cd “Blue Tonight ” was applauded even more,

(leading music magazine) Oor dropped the following lines:
This much praised band does not rehash worn out classics but write their own intimate songs.
Songs in which they fuse, in a very personal style, the boogie spirit of John Lee Hooker with the lazy backbeat of Jimmy Reed .

With a growing live reputation a live cd was the next logical step;
by the end of 1995 Out on the road (recorded live in Germany) was released and again the press reviews were ecstatic :

by far the best bluesband in Holland -Oor magazine
A gem of a blues album -Rotterdams Dagblad
Blues subtlety and top skilled guitarwork -Zwolse Courant
More profound than all the macho blues
of the day -Alles op 10

Also in 1995 drummer Will Drenth is replaced by drum animal Hannes Langkamp (ex time bandits, fox the fox and Muskee)
Fourth cd "Urban blues adventures" sets a different mood and marks the end of a then classic lineup:
Bassplayer Cynthio Ooms leaves the band in 2005 and hammondman William Kooistra passes away in 2007.

Lefthand Freddy today is as the new cd title suggests "Back on track" in powertrio format and with a strong line-up.

Halfway 2009 renowned drummer Hans Waterman (ex Cuby + Blizzards, Solution, Jan Akkerman, The Pretty Things) is asked to sit in on a couple of gigs and quickly becomes the new sticksman.

From day one the band is a popular guest abroad (notably in Germany and Belgium). Some tour highlights were concert spots on the Leberkusener Jazzfestival (Germany), The Gloucester Bluesfestival (GB), the Nuit de Blues(France), the Sviget Festival (Hungary), Slovakian bluesfestival (sharing the bill with legendary Ten Years After) and a London debut in the legendary 100 club..

The John Frick Band is a 4-piece band, based in The Hague, The Netherlands, focusing on performing and recording original music that is firmly rooted in the traditions of blues music. To date, we have recorded 2 albums, Boogie With The John Frick Blues Band (2011) and Urban Crossroads, which will be released by Blueshine Records in January 2014.

The band members are: John Frick (vocals, guitar, slide guitar), Leo Birza (vocals, keyboards), Michel De Man (drums) and Nico Hart (bass guitar, backing vocals).

Our music is heavily influenced by classic blues legends such as Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Freddy King and many more. The modern American and British blues guitar masters, like Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, Jimmie Vaughan, Sean Costello, and others, have also influenced our sound. Although comparisons can be made between our band and bands such as these, we have our own sound and an original approach to presenting our blues. We do however strive to recapture the energy and passion we hear in the music of the artists who inspire us.

Having returned to The Netherlands from a four-year stay in Belgium in August 2009, I put together the final line-up of John Frick and the Blues Hombres, a band that had been performing in various guises in Holland and Belgium for a period of 10 years. Within 2 years however it evolved into the 3-piece John Frick Blues Band, which was established in January 2011, together with drummer, Michel de Man, and seasoned rockabilly guitarist, Roel Loen, stepping in temporarily on bass guitar.

Later in 2011, after seeing performances on YouTube, I contacted keyboard player, Leo Birza, and asked him if he would join us. It turned out to be a perfect match and thus our joint adventures through Bluesville continued deftly.

By November 2013 however, after having made a significant contribution to the development of the band, Roel was ready to leave the band to focus on his guitar playing. In stepped Nico Hart, who had been playing in Mak Wolven’s band, The Insiders. Inspired by new and fresh prospects and the upcoming release of our album, Urban Crossroads, we decided to turn things up a few notches in order to raise the band’s profile in the live music scene.

Since our inception, we’ve played a number of venues in and around The Netherlands. A highlight for us was our tour to South Africa in 2012, during which we performed at Africa’s most prestigious blues festival, The Table Mountain Blues Summit. Since then the band has continued along an exciting path of growth, development and expanding our blues horizons. Having completed writing the material for our third album, set for release in 2015, we will commence the new recording sessions in 2014.

Playing the blues and still having fun. Hein 'Little Boogie Boy' Meijer, all the way from Amsterdam - Holland, has got the blues but is especially having fun. He loves the blues. You can hear it. You can see it. You can feel it. Straight from the heart, and full of joy. Blessed wiht a dark voice and a natural cheerful appearance Little Boogie Boy reaches young and old with his music.

The Little Boogie Boy has been moving his way up in the European bluesscene, not surprisingly according to the qualities and enthousiasm of this frontman, singer and guitarplayer. Hein's been playing guitar since he was a kid and got interested in the blues real soon. Since 1990 he has joined several bluesbands in Holland but formed his own 'Little Boogie Boy Bluesband' soon. His passion for the blues explaines his many trips to Chicago and Mississippi. When he was only 19 years old he played there with bluescelebrities like Magic Slim, J.W. Williams and John Primer. It was John who gave him his nickname Little Boogie Boy, because when Hein was in Chicago he was actually to young to enter the bluesclubs but found a way to get inside.

The Little Boogie Boy Bluesband is a three piece band and rounding out this trio are Monique de Jong and Hein's brother Harry Meijer, who both share the same interest for this music. Harry has been taking care of the drums in Hein's band almost his whole live and you can say he is a bluesdrummers bluesdrummer. Ever since Monique picked up her bass she has played with bluesartists both in Europe and the US like Magic Slim, John Primer, Nick Holt, Michael Coleman, 'Jelly Roll King' Sam Carr and T-Model Ford and many more. She really surprises them, and others, with her no-nonsense way of playing!

These musicians are all inspired by Chicago- and Mississippibluesmen like Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Reed, Magic Slim and Frank Frost but also Johnny Taylor and Bobby Bland. But they don't really copy their songs, they play 'm the way they feel it. Honesty and dedication. That's what it's about for this bluesband.

20 years of Juke Joints, 20 years of Rock Rolling blues, 20 years of setting stages on fire all over the world, that calls for a suitable celebration. There´s the release of this double CD plus the release of the DVD of their thunderous concert at the Moulin Blues Festival in Holland, May 2002!
Disc 2 of this double CD is an exquisite survey of the 20 years in which these ambassadors of Dutchblues, still led out by the original members Peter Kempe (lead vocals/drums/mandolin) and ”Sonnyboy” van der Broek (harmonica/vocals/accordion), have been conquering the world.

The present line-up also includes Michel ”Boogie Mike” Staat on lead guitar and Peter ”Repete” van Merode on bass. It was nearly 10 years ago that the band managed to create a succesful breakthrough on the other side of the Atlantic. This initiated a host of invitations to renowned festivals, on which they shared stages with BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, Little Feat, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Walter Trout and many other luminaries of the blues.
So far the band has released 9 albums, 4 of which are live CD´s. From each album those tracks have been selected that best capture the specific atmo-
sphere of that album. As the band has gathered it´s impressive reputation and ditto fanbase first and foremost from their fiery and highly energetic live perfor-
mances, it is a small wonder that indeed 9 tracks have been culled from 3 of the live albums. Of course concert staples like ”Betty Lee”, ”Shake It” and ”Out On The Western Plain” have not been omitted. And surely the two tracks form their highly sought after debut (LP only!) ”Dancing Shoes” are a real treat!
Disc 0 is an exclusive bonus CD, containing 7 exuberant live tracks that reflect memorable performances with special guests like Willy Foster, Mark Wenner of the Nighthawks and with a amazing Big Band (most of these tracks were never before released). This disc closes with a unique performance of their crowdplea-
ser, inspiration Rory Gallagher´s ”Going To My Hometown” in a studio in the Irish town of Kilkenny, followed by a highly entertaining interview with their host.
”Juke Joints 20 Years” is a most valuable document of a band that has created it´s very own synthesis of blues and rock and roll, an absolute must for their many fans and an impressive introduction for those who aren´t yet but no doubt will be soon. ~Bert van Kessel
