“Dutch Tilders is the Godfather of Australian Blues, the man who paved the way for later acts and opened the way for all Australian Blues artists."

Dutch has reached the landmark of 50 Years of singing the Blues in Australia. Sadly Dutch has recently been diagnosed with Cancer. Going On A Journey was penned soon after discovering the news and was recorded with an all-star Blues band including Broderick Smith, Geoff Achison and Mick “the Reverend” O’Connor. A new version of The Blues Has Been My Life was also done at the same time to celebrate his 50 years of playing the Blues.

Dutch has received over 17 awards in Australia including in the 2006 Australian Blues Music Awards, both Album of the year, Song of the Year and Vocalist of the Year. In 1998 he was Inducted into the Australian Blues Music Awards Hall of Fame and in 1997 received the Australian Blues Heritage Award. Dutch’s first gig at 15 was playing the harmonica and he did not get a guitar until he was 18. With no one to teach him, he developed his own style that remains unique. He released his first record in 1973 and his collaborators were Phil Manning, Broderick Smith and Brian Cadd. In that same year he toured with John Mayall and took up music professionally. Dutch historically pioneered Australia’s first direct to disc (lathe) album in 1972. In 1976 he toured with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and stayed close friends with McGhee until he passed away sadly at 82 years in 1996. In 1976, having only ‘heard’ Dutch open for BB King at the Old Geelong Theatre, Kato and BB King both assumed that Dutch was black. When Dutch went backstage to meet BB King and Kato Walker the Third (BB Kings Alto Sax Player) Kato scratched his head and said to Dutch “How come your white?” Dutch answered, “It must be a genetic defect in my family ancestry”.

Dutch excused himself over the years, by saying that he only plays the guitar, as he doesn’t know what to do with his hands while he sings. He says the blues is the song and the guitar is just the accompaniment. His guitar playing is as extraordinary as his rare vocal range and his finger picking is world recognised.

This Anthology features 16 songs written by Dutch throughout all stage of his career and all have been re-mastered to bring new life into each track. As well as new songs and new recordings there are several live tracks that have never been released before and some tracks that have never been released on CD.
