Attention-grabbing contemporary blues acts -- bands that really encourage listeners to pull classic albums out of rotation -- can be hard to find. Fair or not, it usually takes something special to pique my interest; exceptional tunesmithing and musicianship, a unique instrumental lineup, or a sound that draws from diverse traditions. Blues and Trouble from Kansas City-based Grand Marquis, manages to score on all three counts. By contrast to the six-string foundation of most modern blues acts, the sound of Grand Marquis is rooted in its brass players -- Bryan Redmond on saxophone (and lead vocals) and Chad Boyston on trumpet. Bass player Ben Ruth even takes up the sousaphone in a throwback to the pre-electric days of Dixieland swing (perfect counterpoint to the washboard rhythm of drummer Lisa Mackenzie). The group's sound does justice to the rich blues and jazz history of Kansas City, a musical crossroads often unfairly eclipsed by glitzier northern metropolises. ~Ben Bonin

It was late January of 2011 and an epic midwest snowstorm was moving in across northern Missouri. The Grand Marquis pulled out of Kansas City as freezing rain dotted their windshield. They were headed down south to the International Blues Challenge, a massive annual competition comprised of nearly 200 of the best blues bands in the world, held in Memphis, Tennessee. That week representing the Topeka Blues Society, they advanced past the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, earning a place in the Finals (top eight) to play the Orpheum Theatre. Their bold, jumpin', swingin' and rootsy sound had Beale Street abuzz, and their original music was turning heads as everyone took notice that the Grand Marquis aren't your run of the mill outfit. Theirs is a style that defies the limitations of category; simultaneously modern and relevant, yet refreshingly familiar and classic. Their songs are bluesy and rhythmic with a jazz sensibility, played with a devil-may-care exuberance that threatens to pull anyone out of their chair to dance.

But before they took the stage in competition that week, the Grand Marquis' first stop in Memphis was 706 Union Avenue. They had always been aware of the history and revolutionary contributions to the pantheon of American music that emanated from that address some fifty to sixty years earlier, so to pass up the chance to record at Sun Studio would have been criminal. After all, the Grand Marquis share much of the same musical ethos, influences and often songbook as those Sun artists. When the last guided tour of the day was done they loaded in their instruments and set up to record. Matt Ross-Spang engineered the session, and did a superb job of capturing the magical sound of the room in the recordings. Throughout the session it was evident everyone was enjoying playing while remaining focused, intent on producing a recording worthy of the standing alongside those made there over the last half century.

Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam - 2 albums: Roll Away / Live From Melbourne, Australia

From the very start Knowles earned the respect of fans, media and musicians alike, including some of his own musical heroes such as the aforementioned Peter Frampton, Joe Satrianni, and Warren Haynes. British Blues Legend, Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake, Moody Marsden Band) is another fan - “Davy Knowles continues to amaze me – he's still so young and yet he plays, writes and sings with such maturity. He's immersed himself in the styles of many great players and has emerged with his own brand, playing with a smile on his face. He's a rare bird, one I will continue to watch and study”.

Throughout this musical journey, Knowles has kept 'the blues' close to his heart; “I love the guitar as an instrument, it’s so versatile and endlessly challenging, but whilst I will try play any style to meet that challenge, blues is the music I first fell in love with, and I have always connected deeply with it. I enjoy playing the historian, and am fascinated by all facets of the genre, from the earliest field recordings, to the more recent guitar gods that electrified and supercharged this music. It’s from all along this timeline that I like to draw influence from.”

Tiny Bradshaw, bandleader, vocalist, arranger, and producer of many talented R & B musicians was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1905. Deciding to make music as his life's profession he organized his first small band in Ohio in 1933. Along the way his band has been the incubator for such accomplished sax men in the jazz and R & B field as Sonny Stitt, Red Prysock, and Sil Austin. Vocalists along the way for Bradshaw have included Arthur Prysock, Tiny Kennedy, Lonnie Johnson, and Roy Brown. By the late 1940s Bradshaw shifted his musical direction away from jazz tinged tunes to the more rhythmic sound of Rhythm & Blues. By late 1949 he was attracting attention to the music of his small group and they were signed to the well known R & B independent label King Records of Cincinnati.

Knucklebone Oscar and Judge Nurmion joined forces in Judge Meets the King Ep, where the duo interprets the old time of evangelistic Gospels. We asked Oscar and Handle a couple of questions about how the parties ended up in the same band and how Gospel was sorted out of the composition as bread. Read the men's report below.

Oscar: "With Hande, it's known for years, just as people in such a small country are familiar with. I have been with the same gigs and rounds and played a few times in the bass. Its a cravat. But this co-operation is kind of a few coincidental sums. For some time, I had designed some sort of thick sheet for Weird Antiques, that is, the bugs, which are just about the Vintage Kingdom Telescope series. They like their own pop-antiques in Jätkäsaari and digga a certain all sorts of musameno. They wanted to set up a record company and publish 'jukebox approved' vinyl tones according to their style. This was supposed to be done with White Knuckles Trion a couple of years ago, but the idea re-emerged as it collided with Hande in the middle of the old rocket. That's where it went. It was called there, and then somewhere, it was noticed that the old black gospel is really close to both hearts. It was decided to make this record and a couple of songs justify it for the old godfather." (Translated from Finnish.)

Mark grew up listening to the latest hits that were playing on the radio. At the age of eleven, he began playing the guitar and by fourteen, he learned to play the harmonica. Simultaneously, these two instruments create an astounding sound.

Today, when he isn't busy collecting and studying ancient Native American artifacts, with self discipline and his passion for music, Mark has written his own compositions and released five albums consisting of original pieces and his interpretations of songs in the true styles of Country, Classic Rock, R&B, and Rockabilly. Mark LaForme recreates the authentic, timeless quality of some of the greatest artist in history. Throughout the years, his dedication has lead him to signing with Columbia, R.C.A., and EMI Record labels. In 1998, '99, and 2011 Mark toured with the late, great Stompin' Tom Connors. Mark performed on Center Ice after the last NHL game and at Wayne Gretzky's inauguration into the Hockey Hall of Fame with Stompin' Tom as well. One of Tom's last requests was for Mark to sing I Am The Wind at his funeral and memorial. Mark LaForme honoured this request on March 12th and 13th of 2013. Mark has performed on stage with other great artists such as Colin James and Jeff Healey. He was a featured artist on Rez Bluz2 which was televised on APTN. In 2003, Mark was asked to play for the Canadian Armed Forces in Bosnia, which he accepted without hesitation. Though blues master Freddie King's best material was recorded in the 1960s, his early-'70s tenure at Shelter Records yielded some powerful Texas blues that showed King still in full command of his blazing six-string prowess and deep-down, soulful tenor. The Shelter Records Years covers much of the same material as the double-disc King Of The Blues, but is - at 18-tracks - a more streamlined set that features his best work for the period.

The hard-driving "Going Down", for example, is one of his most searing tracks, and gestures to King's down-home roots and to the rock guitarists he influenced. King is equally impressive on string-bending downtempo blues ("Five Long Years"), funk-inflected grooves ("Me and My Guitar"), and John Lee Hooker-inspired boogies ("Guitar Boogie"). In general, the material here is edgier than his early work, with King's guitar attack sounding particularly fierce and relentless.

Sadly, King died in 1976 at a mere 42 years old, depriving the world of what might have been many more years of recording and performance. Fortunately, compilations like The Shelter Records Years preserve his legacy.

Wayne was born in 1944 in Spokane, Washington, but he relocated with his family to San Francisco, California at an early age. His parents alternatively advised for and against the blues, but his mother's influence led Wayne to be influenced early by Nat King Cole, Little Willie John, and Fats Domino. The family moved in turn to New Orleans, Los Angeles and Compton, California. While he was growing up, Wayne drew further inspiration from The Three Sounds, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaría, Ray Charles, Charles Brown, Floyd Dixon, Big Joe Turner, and Jimmy Reed.

Based in Los Angeles during the 1960s and 1970s, Wayne was utilised as a sideman by various pop and rock musicians. In the 1980s Wayne relocated again to Vancouver, British Columbia. "Blues Boss" (his nickname was acquired from the title of Amos Milburn's comeback album with Motown Records) undertook a tour of Europe in 1994. Wayne dedicated his debut album to his parents, and 2002 heralded the issue of 88th & Jump Street, followed by Blues Carry Me Home (2003) and Let It Loose (2005). In May 2008, Wayne issued his album, Can't Stop Now. Wayne's recent release, Rollin' with the Blues Boss (2014), included guest contributions from Diunna Greenleaf and Eric Bibb. Wayne's 2016 release, Jumpin' & Boppin' featured guitarist Duke Robillard. /Wikipedia

For decades, Otis Rush has been something of an enigma to blues lovers. Biographies of the man in blues magazines and reference books refer to his enormous talent and equally sizeable share of bad luck. But explanations do little to satisfy our hunger for more of his unique and powerful sound.

This CD, recorded live in Europe, truly delivers Rush to his fans. Not only is the man himself in first class form and voice, he is backed by a band of uncommon talent and experience. Together, they perform a powerful mix of Otis' best original material, plus top-notch covers of blues standards such as Lonely Man by Little Milton and Natural Ball by Albert King. Live & Awesome ranks among the best samplings of Otis Rush to be served up in decades. For 60+ minutes, you will hear an artist who has continued to sharpen his musical skills throughout an impressive career.

Since TWO TIMERS formed their unique two-piece band in 1993 they have surprised many thousands across Europe with the sheer power of their performance. Their formidable reputation and unclassifiable style has earned them guest spots with artists as diverse as the Corrs, John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Maceo Parker, Joe Satriani and the Stranglers as well as billing on major European festivals. Now back in the U.K. they are turning heads here fast… Take two multi-instrumentalists with attitude, the mesmerising Sarah James and the taciturn Gordon Russell; throw in an electrified suitcase, a strap-on snare, some raw harmonica and feisty vocals; steamroller the lot with some rock-solid rhythm guitar and what have you got - one helluva show for a start. And then there's the songs: soak up thirty years-worth of Leadbelly, Alex Harvey, Tom Waits, T. Rex, Steve Earle, Zeppelin (I could go on), mix it with a strong dose of your own psyche and you have something which owes them all a lot but sounds nothing like any of them. It's an original and highly visual performance that deserves a slot on any billing.

Jimmy Zee - 2 albums: Devil Take Me Down / Ride

Zee’s vocals approximate a cross between Joe Cocker after a carton of Lucky Strikes and Robbie Robertson’s latter spoken style. He has garnered airplay on key stations across North America and Europe, and has been nominated for Blues Recording of the Year for “Devil Take Me Down” (2010). His stripped-down, oh-so-bluesy remake of Sweeney Todd’s Roxy Roller on that disc was declared one of the Top 10 remakes of all time by the Toronto Star.

“Gritty blues-rock with a funky bottom, nobody would be blamed for not guessing the band is based in Vancouver and rather thought it had southern roots. The greasiness and dirt comes from Zee’s gravelly vocals that recall Howlin’ Wolf/Captain Beefheart.

Canada's foremost R&B saxophonist, GENE HARDY began his musical journey on violin at age 9 then on saxophone a year later in Victoria, British Columbia. After studies at Victoria's Conservatory of Music & UVic, he moved to Toronto in 1986 and traded in his classical pursuits for a post-graduate degree in funk with Toronto's infamous Bourbon Tabernacle Choir. Chances are, you've heard him play. Since the Bourbon's mid '90s break-up, Gene has become the horn player of choice for many of Canada's best known exports & domestic successes. He's recorded and performed in the US & Canada with Michael Bublé and is the latest addition to Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Ronnie Hawkins' band,The Hawks. In fact, Gene has recorded and performed with hundreds of acts - pop & rock, jazz & blues, country to punk and everything in between with the likes of BARENAKED LADIES, MICHAEL BUBLE, ESTHERO, BIG SUGAR, COLIN JAMES, DOWNCHILD BLUES BAND, RONNIE HAWKINS, TYLER YAREMA & HIS RHYTHM, RHEOSTATICS, The LINCOLNS, HOCK WALSH, ROGER CLOWN, VEDA HILLE, QUE VIDA, KEVIN QUAIN & The MAD BASTARDS, BIG DADDY G, FORD PIER (of DOA), DUTCH MASON, STOOPY, TABARRUK, MICHAEL KAESHAMMER, The BOURBON TABERNACLE CHOIR, Dr HILLY SAND ESQ. and Jamaica's THIRD WORLD. There's no boogie woogie-blues piano man out there today who pounds the 88s with the conviction of Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne. Hailed as "an artist bringing the piano back to the front ranks of contemporary blues," multiple-award winning blues, boogie-woogie and jazz pianist Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne is called “Blues Boss” for a reason. His musical career began as a child prodigy in the 1960s and has continued to flourish for over 50 years with Wayne at the forefront of modern day blues piano practitioners.

Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne released his first solo album Alive & Loose, which featured Shuggie Otis, on Andy Griggs' Real Blues Records in 1995. It marked the start of Wayne's blues journey and was followed by four albums for Canadian label Electro-Fi Records: 88th & Jump Street, JUNO Award winning Let It Loose, Can't Stop Now and the live recording Piano-Rama. Wayne also recorded in Paris for Isabel Records at the same studio that Memphis Slim frequently recorded.

Of the Three "Kings" of the blues (BB, Albert and Freddy), Freddy King is perhaps the least well known these days. He enjoyed cross-over success with the white rock audiences of the 70s (hitting with albums for Cotillion, RSO and Shelter and touring extensively - his "live" LP for German label Crosscut is about the closest thing to heavy metal blues imaginable). Yet his death from hepatitis in 1976 robbed Freddy of the kind of acclaim that the current blues revival has given BB, Albert and John Lee Hooker.

There was a time, though, in the mid-'60s when his singles were among the most influential in blues, particularly for British and European audiences. His instrumental singles Hideaway and Drivin' Sideways were issued on Sue and covered by any white blues group that knew what was really happening on the R&B scene. Those two sides plus classics like (The Welfare) Turns It's Back On You, See See Baby, The Stumble and San-Ho-Zay were covered by the likes of Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Peter Green, Albert Collins and Chicken Shack.

The Influential Early Sessions gathers together all these wonderful sides, made originally in the early '60s for Sy Nathan's Federal and King labels, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the class and power of them remains undiminished to this day.

This is something of a sequel to the 1993 Ace compilation of early King sides titled Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions, though it took Ace nearly a decade to unleash the companion volume. All of the 24 tracks were recorded between 1961 and 1966, though some of the songs weren't released until after 1966, in a few cases not for decades; indeed, four alternate takes make their first appearance here. All of King's chart records occurred in 1961, and all were included on the prior Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions, so this couldn't qualify as the first-choice early King; there's no "Hide Away" or "San-Ho-Zay" here.

On a musical level, though, this isn't much different in nature or quality than what you'll find on the earlier anthology. Split between vocals and instrumentals, it's top-notch R&B-blues-rock & roll crossover with stinging guitar and soulful vocals, even if the similarity of some of the songs might turn off non-aficionados. Among the cooler cuts are 1964's "Now I've Got a Woman," with its riveting minor-keyed groove; the wailing slowie "Someday After Awhile (You'll Be Sorry)," covered by the Peter Green lineup of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers; and the faint exotica of "Bossa Nova Blues." Lonnie Mack adds some nice texture on rhythm guitar on a few of the sides of the latest vintage. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Bass Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals – Jack Bruce; Drums – Ginger Baker; Organ [Hammond], Saxophone [Alto Sax], Vocals – Graham Bond; Saxophone [Tenor Sax] – Dick Heckstall-Smith. Recorded live at Klook's Kleek Club in London, 15th October 1964.

This concert gig has appeared in various guises and through various labels (most notoriously Springboard International in the U.S. in the late '70s), and it has a dubious reputation on vinyl. In 1988, however, it appeared on CD under this title, and it finally seemed to justify the trouble it took to record. The Graham Bond Organization's studio recordings were admirable, sometimes impressive, but never essential parts of the British blues boom, leading one to wonder precisely what -- apart from the presence of two future members of Cream -- the group's reputation was based on. The answer is on these sides, recorded by Giorgio Gomelsky "under extreme difficulty." Listening to the band rumble and surge through standards like "Wade in the Water," "Big Boss Man," "Stormy Monday," and "Early In the Morning," it's easy to understand how they got signed and what the record companies were looking for, and also why they didn't get it -- this is gritty stuff, loud R&B with some jazz elements, Dick Heckstall-Smith blowing up a storm on sax, and more than a little stretching out (especially by Baker, whose solos here (check out "Early In the Morning") are more enjoyable than most of what he did with Cream), all of it pretty intense and none of it easy to capture in the studio. The audience and the urgency of concert work were both essential to the group's functioning. On the technical side, there's some distortion, even some overload, and Jack Bruce's bass isn't captured in its more resonant form (and what electric bass on any live recording before about 1968 ever was?), but the electricity is here, along with the immediacy, and this CD may be the way to best appreciate this band. ~Bruce Eder

Downchild Blues Band - 2 albums: We Deliver / Road Fever

Led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Donnie "Mr. Downchild" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band is the premier blues band in Canada. Their saxophone-driven jump blues provided a major inspiration for Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi's Blues Brothers, who included Walsh's tunes "Everything I Need (Almost)" and "Shotgun Blues" on their 1978 debut album, Briefcase Full of Blues. Formed in 1969 by Walsh and his brother, Richard "Hock" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band endured continuous personnel turnover. More than 18 musicians came and went, including Gene Taylor, who went on to play with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Kenny Neal, who joined after leaving the employ of Buddy Guy and relocating to Toronto.

Conflict between the Walsh brothers resulted in Hock Walsh being fired from the band shortly before work began on their third album in 1974. Although he returned to work with the band in 1977 and 1985, his hard-living caught up with him on February 1999 when he succumbed to an apparent heart attack. Since the early '90s, the Downchild Blues Band has benefited from a more stable lineup. Vocalist/songwriter Chuck Jackson, who joined in 1990, received a Maple Blues Award as Best Male Vocalist of 1999 and a Blues with a Feeling Award from the Toronto Blues Society for his "achievements during a distinguished career." A former member of '60s rock band Rhinoceros, Michael Fonfara received a Maples Blues Award in 2000 as Piano/Keyboards Player of the Year. Mike Fitzpatrick has played drums with Big Joe Turner, Sonny Rhodes, Hubert Sumlin, and Bob Margolin and has recorded with such blues artists as Snooky Pryor and B.B. Odom. Gary Kendall, who played bass on the band's earliest recordings, returned after a 12-year break, during which he booked concerts at Toronto blues club the Silver Dollar. The recipient of a Toronto Blues Society Blues with a Feeling Award in 1993, he received Maple Blues Awards as Bass Player of the Year in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2002. ~Craig Harris

There is some stunningly good blues and R 'n’ B out of Canada, there must be something in the water! Sons Of Rhythm are a delightfully effective band, from the Greater Toronto Area, who mix traditional blues with rock ‘n’ Roll and Funk with an added dash of country, This is their debut EP and is an excellent indication of what to expect. The band consists of singer and bassist Mick Maratta whose funky rhythm section is anchored by Mike Carbone on drums. Federico Luiu provides a skilful and unique interpretation of the blues as the group’s lead guitarist. Since their inception they have added sax and keys to great effect.

The EP consists of 24+ minutes in six tracks which are beautifully recorded and with deep core of funkiness to them the band produces some nice harmonies in their joint vocals and front man Maratta has a super voice too. One of the delights is that, in a tradition inherited from some of the old country and western singers, the lyrics are enunciated clearly and effectively. “Ain’t no use singin’ a song if folks can’t understand the words,” All in all a great debut that needs wide exposure. ~Ian K. McKenzie

12. I Wonder Why (3:47)
13. Goin' Down Slow (4:51)

John Brim made several classic Chicago blues recordings in the 1950s, and he occasionally has surfaced over the past four decades. He guested on Bob Margolin’s recent album and Margolin has helped Brim with this, his first ever full album.

Margolin is joined by harmonica player Jerry Portnoy and others to help Brim reprise three of his Parrot/Chess recordings, "Tough Times", "Ice Cream Man" and "Be Careful". Margolin’s presence is major a factor in why this captures much of the feel of Brim’s fifties recordings on these three, on Brim’s originals (the topical "Wake Up America") and versions of Muddy Water’s "Standin’ Around Cryin" (with splendid Margolin slide) and Little Walter’s "Can’t Hold Out Much Longer".

Brim, like Jimmy Rogers, sings in a cleanly articulated, relaxed manner. While he may sound a tad rusty four decades older, he still sings with a warm, relaxed honesty. Margolin’s dedication to perpetuating the classic Chicago blues sound makes this a solid session of interest to any with an interest in Chicago blues.

Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne - Let It Loose

It's easy to assume that anyone with a nickname like "Blues Boss" would - when it came to playing the blues - have the goods, and Kenny Wayne does. But Wayne's blues isn't the kind of music that inspires one to cry in one's beer. From the start of Let It Loose, it's clear that the pianist/singer is determined, above and beyond everything else, to have a good time with the music.

"Blackberry Wine" is taken at an upbeat tempo guaranteed to jump-start any country dance, while the chorus of the midtempo "Let Me Go Home Whiskey" recalls the smooth harmony singing of the Mills Brothers. Wayne's a good singer who adds lots of energy to the lyrics of songs like the title track, and it's easy to convince oneself that he recorded these pieces on the stage as opposed to the studio. This vocal approach is perfectly matched with his happy piano playing.

Wayne loves upbeat material - like "I Never Will Forgive You" - that allows him to cut loose with abandon on the keyboard. It doesn't hurt that he's backed by a sympathetic band, or that he also lets players like guitarist Brandon Isaak and harpist Dave "Hurricane" Hoerl have a piece of the action. All of this is to say that Let It Loose is a good-time album, sure to please anyone who likes spirited blues. /Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., AllMusic

The album is not a complete diversion from Laganza though, as band members Derek Cochrane (drums), Brian Hawley (guitar), Benji Jordan (bass), Jamie Bestwick (bass) and Will Main (bass) all play at times on the record. ‘Collective Blues Agreement’ also features outstanding playing from award winning blues aces Gary Kendall (bass), Dave Curry (guitar), Lance Anderson (piano/organ) and Roly Platt (harmonica). This incredible mix of player’s makes for some unique chemistry and dynamic performances throughout the record.

Tobin’s triple-threat of guitar playing, singing and songwriting makes for a high energy and soulful live show. Tobin is quickly establishing himself as a blues force to be reckoned with.

I grew up listening to Hank Williams, Reverend Jumping Jim Jericho and Taj Mahal when older brother Greg turned me onto Solomon Burke, Joe Tex, and Bobby Blue Bland, and that laid the bedrock for my writing and vocal styling. CBCRadio: Ringo Starr once said, that “you’ve gotta pay your dues if you wanna sing the blues”, then Danny Brooks has enough life experience to share with a dozen fledgling performers. But more importantly, he has uncommon chops as a musician and songwriter. Anyone who cares at all about music - and I mean REAL music that comes from the soul - should make themselves aware of Brooks winning blend of blues, R&B, and Stax". ~Mark Rheaume

I will never forget walking into Johnny Sandlin’s (Capricorn Records Producer) Duck Tape Studios in Decatur Alabama that cool spring morning in 2007 and meeting music legends ‘David Hood’, ‘Spooner Oldham’, (se.e below) and the rest of the Muscle Shoals players. They were down home, gracious and gave of themselves, and I will never forget David Hood’s telling me in his southern drawl after listening to the first song we were about to record ‘Ain’t That The Truth’; “Y’all could’ve been born down here Danny....”
