Kansas City guitarist, Jimmie Bratcher, aka The Electric Rev, is a prolific writer, who keeps busy touring a mix of churches, clubs, and prisons, alternately preaching and performing that requires interchangeable audience-grabbing abilities and employs his greatest gift - being a captivating storyteller. He has released a dozen albums, a cookbook and two live DVDs since 2001 and now delivers his 13 th album Far Enough, together with a 117-page companion book for the album “Far Enough Stories & Songs.” Bratcher collaborated fully with keyboardist, engineer and producer Eric Stark to write or co-write the collection of eleven new tracks in a sophisticated presentation that expands the boundaries of “Blues Rock,” employing strings, brass, lap steel, and Irish penny whistle to back up Bratcher’s guitar work and providing a colorful landscape for his expansive tales of faith, discovery, love, loss, and life.

The southern fried gospel infused opener, ”Far Enough,” tells the story of a man delivered into sobriety through grace and a helping hand from a dear friend. The big production continues with hot horns and glorious backing vocals from Charmelle Cofield as Bratcher narrates the life and times of Jim Gaines, Jimmie’s friend and a multiple Grammy-winning record producer and engineer. The slick two-beat funk “Don’t Count Me Out,” features another great horn chart, greasy B3 organ from Aaron Mayfield and sweet backup vocals, to create a very Ray Charles soul-styled track. “My Name Is Sinner” reflects the plight of many a downtrodden soul in a dramatic performance from Bratcher on soaring vocals and guitar. The acoustic driven “The Road That Leads Home” is a homily of hope and redemption.

“Living Here In Babylon” rocks hard and hits topical and timely talking points about our complex world. Stark wrote the expansive power ballad, “Chains ,” that Bratcher embodies the profession of faith with his whole being. He lightens the mood asking the simple question “Why Is It We Don’t Dance Anymore,” with a four-piece horn section punctuating his call for a return to the good times. The tragic tale, “When He Dreams,” tugs at the heartstrings as it portrays the life of someone whose eyesight was taken but his hope and imagination remain. Bratcher emphasizes his point with grinding slide guitar on the fiery rebuke, “Don’t Bring That Evil Round Here.”

The album closer “Save Me From Myself,” is a work of clinical self-evaluation administered as a melancholy blues with cinematic underpinning. Bratcher and Stark have created a heady piece of work on Far Enough that will challenge and enlighten listeners with equal measure. ~Rick J Bowen

The expression “Soul Food” gained popular notoriety in the 1960s, with its roots in African American and Native American culture dating back to the colonial period. The phrase has grown beyond a reference to traditional foods and has become synonymous with music, art, fashion, dance, and all aspects of African American culture. Kansas City singer-songwriter, guitarist and ordained minister, Jimmie Bratcher was surely inspired by this legacy during the creation of his latest project simply titled “I’m Hungry.” With the help of his wife, Sherri, he has created a cookbook of nearly 200 recipes gathered from some of the world’s finest chefs and friends and family with an accompanying album of culinary inspired tunes. Bratcher earned the moniker,“The Electric Rev,” by delivering inspirational live performances and writing compelling material, which pairs the musical language of the blues with spiritual messages for decades. For his 12th album Bratcher gathered several musical friends in Kansas City and Nashville to record 10 original tracks and two inspired cover songs to round out this unique project. The music ranges from barrelhouse boogie to straight-ahead blues, roots rock and soul, mixed to enhance and inspire the downhome recipes, creating an entertaining and irreverent collection.

While the songs on the album don’t reference any specific recipes, beyond the reference to fried chicken, they do speak of many of the ingredients and the joy of cooking. The opening track ‘I Love Her Name,’spells out that affection with words that could’ve been in a kid’s playground song, but here are driven by barrelhouse piano fromJohn Selle, setting the table for the delectable delights to come. Bratcher then plays the role of a man tormented by being denied his pleasure upon doctor’s orders for the loping shuffle ‘Mama Won’t Fry No Chicken.’Every good cook knows that the aroma of food is central to the presentation, so on ‘Bacon Is On My Mind,’Bratcher uses a bump and grind 12-bar blues to pontificate about one of the world’s most powerfulolfactory senses. The double entendre is thick, and the schmaltz is deep on the jazzy pop ballad ‘Baby I Like What You’re Cooking,’ with sublime guitar work.An entire album could have been recorded of cover songs written about food, thus giving importance to the first oftwo Bratcher selected. The Keb’Mo’tune,‘Government Cheese,’is astraightforward funky bluesthat has a subtle socio-political message behind it, reflective of the struggles many people are facing today.

Anyone who’s been to Kansas City knows that it is the home of great music and great barbecue. Bratcher takes us on a tour of the KC hotspots during the driving blues ‘Where You Gonna Stop,’name checking his favorite joints. The instrumental track sitting in the middle of the album is perfectly named ‘Greasy,’with this southern fried funk groove that sets up tasty guitar licks. He then uses a spicy rhumba to extolthe virtues and faults of poultry during ‘Chicken Tastes The Same.’The second line anthem ‘Green Bananas,’from his 2008 album “The Electric Rev” gets a remix adding spoken word backstory to the ‘carpe diem’aphorism. The crew then takes a little liberty by framing Little Milton‘s 1969 Stax Soul classic ‘Grits Ain’t Groceries,’ as a Texas shuffle that allows Bratcher to stretch out on a sizzling guitar lead.

Reprising another selection from his discography the fun-loving country blues, ‘Bologna Sandwich Man,’ from his album “Secretly Famous,” reveals the secret foodie passion that has been brewing for years. The credits roll for the project over the final track ‘Happy,’ a stellar progressive blues instrumental in the style of Robben Ford or Larry Carlton that showcases stellar performances from the rhythm section and hot guitar playing from Bratcher. ~Rick J Bowen

The Rev Jimmie Bratcher - 2 albums: Secretly Famous / Exchange

Not only because his lightning-strike performances crackle with high-voltage guitar playing and emotionally charged vocals. Or because Bratcher makes the hairs rise on the arms of the crowds he entertains in the map of clubs, festivals, bike rallies, churches and prisons that he calls “the road.” But because the ascending blues star is literally a preacher, as comfortable testifying in the pulpit about the power of Jesus as he is in smoky bars celebrating the vigor of the blues.

Bratcher’s shows — regardless of location — are worry-free zones, where the healing, good-time mojo of rockin’ blues sets hearts and minds, and maybe even souls, free. His latest album Secretly Famous is fueled by the same attitude. The disc’s dozen tracks are packed with humor, romance, joy and the thrill of finding the same at every turn, plus some real-life reflection. And they’re all buoyed by Bratcher’s gravel dappled tenor voice and his gritty, muscular and deeply rooted guitar playing, supported by a versatile rhythm section of drummer Lester Estelle Jr. and bassist Craig Kew.

This is Blues Country - Classic Country Songs in Blues Style.

Get around the Bratcher family and you will hear country music. Growing up that’s all my folks Pete & Margie listened to and as much as I hate it to admit it, some how it got inside of me. My first concert was Patsy Cline’s last live performance and at the age of fourteen my album collection was Axis Bold as Love, Jimi Hendrix and Live at Folsom Prison, Johnny Cash. But I’m a blues-rock player and playing country songs just wouldn’t fit into my set list, until now.

This is Blues Country is a collection of some of my favorite country songs arranged in my blues-rock style. On most of the songs I tried to stay true to the original melodies and it would make me so happy if you would listen to the original artist and arrangement first before you listen to mine. I love these songs and I am so excited to present them to you. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed recording and performing them.... Jimmie

[2:10] 10. Take It Back
[4:42] 11. Right Side Of The Tracks
[4:35] 12. No Pretense
[2:58] 13. Happy

Red comes right at ya with “Bad Religion,” a rocking Blues number complete with a driving rhythm section, stinging slide guitar, and gritty vocals. The next track, “Mercy,” adds horns and a feel good Funk sound for a cool groove. “I See Red” gets a little bigger with full vocals, great breaks, and a driving rhythm almost like a Texas-style Blues. “Drive” showcases the horn section with some killer leads. “Dance With Me” takes us down that Country Blues ballad lane and does it quite well. “Restless For The Son” caught me off guard as I thought that the CD had switched to a Miles Davis track; not quite, but it is very jazzy and easy to listen to. “Three Chords” is a classic low-down, greasy Blues song with some very big guitar and vocal work; tasty, tasty.
