Few artists in contemporary roots music have built a legacy as remarkable as Keb’ Mo’. With five Grammy Awards, 14 Blues Foundation Awards, and a career spanning more than five decades, the acclaimed singer, songwriter, guitarist, and storyteller continues to redefine the boundaries of blues, folk, soul, and Americana. Now, Keb’ Mo’ has released his new album The Breakdown, a deeply personal collection of songs that strips his songwriting back to its most essential form. Built around intimate solo acoustic performances, the album explores the passage of time, the inevitability of change, and the enduring power of hope, faith, and love.

Born and raised in Compton, California, Keb’ Mo’ began his career behind the scenes as a guitarist, songwriter, and arranger before breaking through internationally with his acclaimed 1994 self-titled debut album. Since then, he has topped the Billboard Blues Chart eight times, performed at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to The White House, and collaborated with artists including Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, The Chicks, and Lyle Lovett. His songs have been recorded and sampled by artists as diverse as B.B. King, Zac Brown, and BTS.

Along the way, he has released signature guitars with Gibson and Martin, composed music for television productions, and appeared in projects including Martin Scorsese’s The Blues, Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing, and the iconic children’s television series Sesame Street. In 2021, he received the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement in Performance Award. With The Breakdown, Keb’ Mo’ once again demonstrates why he remains one of the most respected voices in modern roots music. It’s been nearly a decade since Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ teamed up for their collaborative debut TajMo. But even though the album was a runaway success - it won a Grammy, garnered rave reviews, and spawned a massive joint tour of the U.S. and Europe - neither artist ever expected to record a follow up. “That first album turned out so great that part of me wondered if maybe we just got lucky,” Keb’ says with a laugh. “I always figured it was a one-time thing. But when we got back into the studio together, I felt that same magic again, and I realized it wasn’t luck at all.”

Recorded in Nashville with Keb’ and Taj co-producing, Room On The Porch finds the pair in peak form, playing to each other’s strengths and opening up new creative horizons more than a half-century into their storied careers. The songs are warm and inviting here, rooted in the joy of human connection and the power of positivity, and the performances are as timeless as they are adventurous, incorporating the full spectrum of American roots music from blues and jazz to folk and country.

Keb’ and Taj invited an all-star group of players, singers, and co-writers (including their sons) to join them in the studio for the sessions, but the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the legendary pair throughout the collection, their instantly recognizable voices and guitar stylings complementing and elevating each other at every turn. Blues musician Keb’ Mo’ has often incorporated elements of other genres in his music and his new release, Oklahoma, is a stellar example. Featuring artists ranging from Rosanne Cash and Jaci Velasquez to Robert Randolph and Taj Mahal (his collaborator on the 2017 release TajMo), Keb’ renders ten tracks of blues-infused Americana. The artist, who is celebrating twenty-five years in the music business, recently revealed the connections between his current frame of mind and the societal issues that fueled his songwriting: “When you are in a certain part of your life, the concept of an album is woven into the process. All of these songs stemmed from important issues and topics worldwide that really resonated with me during the time we were recording the project.” These topics include depression and waning love—the backbone of the blues—as well as contemporary concerns such as immigration and environmental degradation.

Opening with “I Remember You,” Keb’ picks up his National steel guitar as he tells the tale of an unforgettable woman in a red dress last seen “walkin’ out the door.” Drummer Marcus Finnie keeps the groove steady on this contemporary blues tune with Jim Hoke adding to the ambiance on Wurlitzer.

The title track, “Oklahoma,” was inspired by Keb’s performance at a 2013 benefit for victims of a tornado that caused widespread devastation in the state. Several years after this journey through tornado alley, Keb’ met up with Oklahoma native Dara Tucker, who co-wrote this uplifting song about resilience. The Latin-flavored track features a lively interplay between steel guitarist Robert Randolph and violinist Andy Leftwich and is one of the highlights of the album.

Another highlight is the female empowerment anthem, “Put a Woman in Charge,” featuring Rosanne Cash. Released last year, the song quickly became a campaign anthem: “Here we are standing on the brink of disaster/enough is enough is enough, I know the answer—put a woman in charge!” “Don’t Throw It Away,” featuring Taj Mahal, is an ode to recycling with the refrain “You gotta use it again, baby (don’t ya throw it away),” while “This Is My Home,” featuring Jaci Velasquez, traces the path of immigrants from across the globe who have settled in the U.S. and “know, this is where they belong.”

Oklahoma concludes on a positive note with the duet, “Beautiful Music,” featuring Keb’s wife, Robbie Brooks Moore. Passionate music followers have been known to trade thoughts on times, places, and musical line-ups they can only fantasize being there to catch. An easy nominee might for one of those would be Sylvio’s bar on Chicago’s West Lake Street in the 1950s and early ‘60s, where Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf traded off as headliners, occasionally shared bills. In those cases, the management definitely wanted an act strong enough to sandwich between those fierce competitors and their enormously skilled and exciting bands to keep both the musical heat and customers in place, and for that, the choice would often be house regulars Elmore James and His Broomdusters. Elmore’s slashing slide guitar and explosive vocal attack were famous in themselves, and had produced the hit “Dust My Broom,” that gave his band its name.

That celebrated song, and its lasting riff, had been taught to Elmore by legend-to-be Robert Johnson, but Johnson’s own record was long out of circulation when James’ electrified version became a hit in 1952, and remained so until 1970; the hundreds of blues revival and rock versions heard since were picked up directly from Elmore, though he didn’t live to know it, having died from a heart attack at age 45, in 1963

The style of guitar and vocal attack stuck because Elmore’s turns on older blues, and songs he came up with himself, were flat out electrifying in all senses of the term. As rock ‘n roll gave way to harder rock, his vocal and instrumental example became all the more a model, for all the more performers. He’d played with a full band (horns sometimes, electric always) as early as 1939, when that was an utterly novel way to present intense, personal Delta blues numbers; his songs and arrangements were built to work in hot band situations. When you hear country traditionalist Jamey Johnson’s take on the now standard blues “It Hurts Me Too,” you can be sure it’s Elmore James’ sturdy and adaptable song being saluted—though history shows that Elmore had adapted it from Tampa Red’s “When Things Go Wrong With You.’ Elmore’s music sticks, instructs, and sets a pace.

That’s evident throughout this salute album— which puts such often-revisited James numbers as “Shake Your Moneymaker,” “Look on Yonder Wall,” and “Person to Person” alongside songs known mainly by James aficionados, gets them into the hands of masterful interpreters from out of the blues, soul, country, pop and Americana arenas, as far-ranging as Tom Jones, Rodney Crowell, Keb Mo, Deborah Bonham of the rocking Bonham family, and sisters Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer. The set reveals something fresh in the process: Elmore James contributed more than riffs and intensity to American music, he left a body of memorable, adaptable songs that can be renewed again and again in surprising ways. Biography

Guitarist/vocalist Keb' Mo' draws heavily on the old-fashioned country blues style of Robert Johnson while keeping his sound contemporary with touches of soul and folksy storytelling. A skilled frontman as well as an accomplished sideman, he writes much of his own material and has applied his acoustic, electric, and slide guitar skills to jazz- and rock-oriented bands. Born Kevin Moore in Los Angeles to parents of Southern descent, he was exposed to gospel music at a young age. At 21, Moore joined an R&B band that was later hired for a tour by Papa John Creach; as a result, Moore played on three of Creach's albums. Opening for jazz and rock artists such as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jefferson Starship, and Loggins & Messina helped further broaden Moore's horizons and musical abilities. Moore cut an R&B-based solo album, Rainmaker, in 1980 for Casablanca, which promptly folded. In 1983, he joined Monk Higgins' band as a guitarist and met a number of blues musicians who collectively increased his understanding of the genre. He subsequently joined a vocal group called the Rose Brothers and gigged around Los Angeles. In 1990, Moore portrayed a Delta bluesman in a local play, Rabbit Foot, and then played Robert Johnson in a docodrama entitled Can't You Hear the Wind Howl? He released his self-titled debut album as Keb' Mo' in 1994, featuring two Robert Johnson covers, 11 songs written or co-written by Moore, and his guitar and banjo work. His second album, Just Like You, saw Keb' Mo' stretching his legs by working with a full band and tackling several rock-based songs. The gamble paid off, and Just Like You won the artist his first Grammy Award. Slow Down followed in 1998 and netted Mo' another Grammy, and Door was issued two years later. Big Wide Grin followed in 2001, while 2004 saw the release of two albums, Keep It Simple and Peace...Back by Popular Demand. Suitcase was issued in 2006 on Red Ink Records. The self-produced The Reflection appeared five years later in 2011; the first release on his own label, Yolabelle International, the album featured guest spots from India.Arie, Vince Gill, Dave Koz, Marcus Miller, Mindi Abair, and David T. Walker. The Reflection performed well, peaking at two on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Blues Album. Keb' Mo' followed the record with BLUESAmericana, which appeared in the spring of 2014. That Hot Pink Blues Album, a live set recorded on the BLUESAmericana tour, showed up in the spring of 2016.

Here's Little Milton's superstar album, finding the R&B legend performing duets with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Keb' Mo', Peter Wolf, Dave Alvin, Delbert McClinton, Gov't Mule, G. Love & Special Sauce, and Susan Tedeschi. By far the most interesting track is John Sinclair's recitation of "Mother Earth" preceding the duet between Milton and Tedeschi of it. Sessions at West 54th: Recorded Live in New York is a live music DVD by Keb' Mo' recorded in June 1997 which was then released in 2000. The performance was recorded for the television series Sessions at West 54th, a studio located in West 54th Street in New York City. The songs recorded on the album are all from Keb' Mo's two prior studio albums. Unlike the majority of Keb' Mo's albums, this contains no songs by Robert Johnson.

This concert was thoroughly enjoyable. Keb Mo' is a wonderful songwriter with a warm, appealing voice. He also plays a mean guitar. Although based in the blues, Keb Mo' transcends the style, offering soul/R&B and beautiful ballads, as

Notes: T. Rogers is a 6-piece 'joy and blues' band based in Budapest, Hungary. Their name name is based on the Hungarian word "troger", meaning basically someone with a relaxed attitude towards life, who likes to enjoy each and every day. So don't ask to meet Mr. Rogers!

The band formed in 2004, and play both both electric and acoustic blues from a wide variety of different influences, reflecting the diverse different musical tastes of each of the band members. Their style is described as joy-and-blues, and is tight, engaging, and exciting.

This dynamic and talented group is renowned for their live performances, with intense solos and infectious energy gaining them a growing reputation across Europe.

As the European Blues is rightly claiming more attention on the scene, the Hungarian band T.Rogers comes out with a pretty good album, despite its apparently low-profile title.

The band is composed of Bela Barath (drums), Stewart Hay (harmonica), Ferci Kovacs (vocals and guitar), Pal Sturmann (guitar), Zsolt Szatai (bass) and Vince Szell (percussions and mandolin), Keb' Mo' featuring at the voice and the resophonic guitar.

Despite the name of the band coming from the Hungarian word "troger", meaning someone with a easy-going, downright attitude to life, our bluesmen boast a rare musical professionality and sound quality of their product. Their 9 original tunes (out of the 11 of the album) cannot be easily dismissed, and one can say that these guys know their chops by listening the intro of "Far and Slow". Far from being a pure Blues act, their music has been admittedly influenced by Rock and Country, as one can realise in "Gotta Go", whereas tracks like "Something Human" definitively have something of a ballad, but the acustic-electric guitar interplay, along with the ubiquitous yet not intrusive harmonica, make this album a damn good one. Even Ferci's singing (all in English), despite not being perfect, can definitively lecture many people about prononciation, and it works pretty well alongside Keb' Mo' in "Angelina", or in some classic tunes like "It Hurts Me Too", here rearranged in the T. Rogers way, or the classic "The Regular's Blues". Quite enjojable are also the acustic digression "Sun On My Back" and the American-style ballads "Simple Life" and "Sunshine Cold".

Definitely something to check out in order to overcome the borders which separate us from our neighbours.

Earthjustice, which put together the Fish Tree Water Blues CD, is a nonprofit group whose goal is to provide free legal assistance to organizations fighting for environmental causes. The proceeds from this CD will go to Earthjustice to help fund their projects. If you like protecting clean water, preserving rain forests, protecting endangered species or just like good blues music, this might be a disc that interests you. The disc features 14 songs from a diverse field of musicians. For the most part, and with only a couple of notable exceptions, the compilation sticks to the discs earthy theme. Five of the songs have never been released or qualify for that first new recording in many years category. For example, J.J. Cale's "Stone River", Alvin Youngblood Hart's banjo heavy "Rollin' River", Robert Cray's live "The Forecast (Calls For Pain)", Mavis Staple's "I'll Fly Away", and the Charlie Musselwhite with Bob Weir's Ratdog performing "Take Me To The River", all great stuff. This is a really good compilation from start to finish and definetly a worthwhile acquisition.
