Spider Eating Preacher is the new album by Chicago blues legend Eddie C. Campbell and it's a family affair. Eddie & Barbara's musical partnership is in full blossom as Barbara plays bass on 6 songs. Barbara learned the authentic Chicago blues bass 'bump' from Eddie! Spider Eating Preacher features 12 new compositions, including the title track, a song about Barbara's blindness. Their son, David, plays violin on two songs. This is the first time Eddie has played with his godson, Lurrie Bell, since the title track on Eddie's classic 1977 album King of the Jungle. This album is the follow-up to Tear This World Up, a finalist for Album of the Year in the 2010 Blues Music Awards.

Toledo-area blues singer Robert Lee Gray, better known by the stage name Bobby G, swings, sways, growls, soothes, and packs another solid punch with his sweet-and-soulful baritone voice on this second album of sweat-drenched, gritty material that really fits his character and style.

The disc showcases love and respect for the 74-year-old Bobby G from several high-profile local musicians who together call themselves the Third Street Cigar Blues Band, as well as that of national recording artist Johnny Rawls, a blues guitarist-vocalist composer and producer who has embraced Toledo in a big way.

Rawls, when he came to the Toledo School for the Arts studio for several days to help record two bands in late 2016, had a big hand in getting Bobby G’s first album with Curtis Grant and the Midnight Rockers recorded, writing most of the songs for it and appearing as one of the backup musicians.

On this album, Rawls wrote or co-wrote all 10 songs, too, with composer Linda Francis.

He reappears as a special guest for background vocals, rhythm guitar, and vocals.

Bobby G is performing with Rawls, John Primer, and Jeff Jensen at the Blues on the Water festival at Promenade Park on Aug. 4, with Rawls performing at a post-festival show at the Oliver House that night.

The magic between Rawls and his friend, producer John Henry of Waterville’s Third Street Cigars and co-founder of the Black Swamp Blues Society, helped make Bobby G’s first album, Still Standing, so successful it broke into the Top 25 on the Living Blues charts and was a hit over in Europe. The momentum carries over to the new disc as Bobby G performs with Ramona Collins and other area musicians — including guitarist Larry “Entertainment” Gold and Johnny “HiFi” Newmark — as well as Toledo-area trumpeter Ric Wolkins, saxophonist Mark Lemle, and others.

One of the highlights is the title track, in which Bobby G sings about his hard-scrabble roots in tiny Winterville, Miss., and how — from the cotton fields of the Deep South — he got to Toledo by singing the blues in the early 1960s. ~by Tom Henry

The Mighty Titans of Tone is a Seattle-based r&b group scene fronted by internationally celebrated harmonica player, guitarist, and singer Kim Field. Over the years Field has appeared on bills with such rhythm and blues legends as Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Gregg Allman, James Cotton, Otis Rush, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, the Righteous Brothers, Walter Horton, and Big Mama Thornton. He has appeared in clubs in the U.S. and Europe and has been a featured performer at the San Francisco Blues Festival, the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, the Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival, and the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle. Field’s songwriting has been highlighted in the soundtracks of two feature films, The Killoff and The Lawless Land.

Chris Cain offers up a soulful stew of Memphis style electric blues. His powerfully deep vocals and jazz inspired, blues guitar riffs are unforgettable; uniquely his own, while reminiscent of the legendary BB King and Albert King. As a child, Chris Cain attended concerts with his dad to hear many of the great blues artists of the time. When Cain burst onto the blues scene in 1987 with his award winning debut album, he soon found himself sharing the stage and trading licks with a few of those legends, including Albert King and Albert Collins. Chris Cain has released a dozen albums, each filled with soul-stirring songs pulled from his own blues drenched heart. His brand of blues is unforgettable.

Cain was raised on stories of his father's childhood upbringing on Memphis' Historic Beale Street and attended his first B.B King concert at the tender age of three. Blues music played continuously on the home stereo and family outings were often trips to concerts. Cain recalls, "I remember when I was a kid, my Dad would be mowing the lawn with the stereo blasting Muddy Waters. When I look back, that was pretty cool! There was always music playing at our house, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert King, all the greats."

At the age of eight, Cain taught himself to play guitar and began playing professionally before he was eighteen. Chris studied music at San Jose City College, and was soon teaching jazz improvisation on campus. Over the next twenty years, Cain would also master piano, bass guitar, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone. The combination of his blues upbringing and his jazz studies melded to form the searing guitar style that sets Chris Cain apart and has moved him to the top ranks of the blues music scene.

Born in 1955, Andy has been playing harmonica and singing professionally since 1977. He has recorded 7 LPs, 12 cds and two 45s. These recordings feature mostly Forest’s original songs. After living in Europe for ten years he returned to his home New Orleans in 1991 where he plays in clubs and frequently goes on tour in Europe and Canada.

Various Artists - Boppin' By The Bayou: Flip, Flop & Fly

It’s back to boppin’ with this 20th in the “By The Bayou” series, the seventh highlighting the young white rockers from the Gulf Coast area, which runs from New Orleans, Louisiana in the east to Port Arthur, Texas in the west. It was an area dominated by swamps and bayous, where crawfish and rice were farmed, alligators were hunted, fishing was for food and where there was oil to be drilled. All of these occupations had one thing in common: hard physical labour, which bred the need to relax and party at the end of the week, and fulfilling that need were countless clubs and bars in every town, large or small, where music had to be loud to be heard.

All of the artists featured on this CD could tell you tales about these clubs: about the raucous atmosphere, the buzz of playing, owners trying to rook them out of their pay – particularly if it was a cut of the entrance money – and the danger of looking too long at one of the women dancing. The men there were fiercely protective of their women and there were plenty of weapons around. These establishments were the centre of our singers’ and musicians’ existence. When they cut their records they hoped for a hit but the realism was that if you had your name on a record you could command higher pay at your gigs.

All of this background contributes to the distinctive sound of South Louisiana rock’n’roll, whether at the rockabilly end of the spectrum or what would become known as swamp pop. What matters most with this music is not to pigeon-hole it but to lose yourself in its feel – and you have feel a-plenty in this collection, from the raw exuberance of the Tune Tones, a family band comprising three Clement brothers and their brother-in-law, to the mastery of singer/drummer Warren Storm.

The 28 tracks on this CD include a host of previously unissued masters, alternate takes and mega-rare 45s and 78s. Of particular note are the previously unissued distinctly different versions of Al Ferrier’s ‘Blues Stop Knockin’’ and Johnny Jano’s ‘Mabel’s Gone’, Jimmy Newman’s very rare ‘H-Brown Shuffle’ and our stunning title track, the previously unheard version of ‘Flip, Flop & Fly’ by Gene Terry, which demonstrates why Gene was so proud of his band, the Downbeats, and why Eddie Shuler praised him as one of the best artists he ever had on his roster. The harpist hooked up with a young Maryland-based band called Tough Luck for this disc, certainly one of his better outings. Marina Crouse is an exceptional singer. Her album Never Too Soon is an eclectic mix of soul and blues. It is a mix of English and Spanish. It is American music…California style and it is simply a great album.

Let’s step back a second and acknowledge a cruel fact of life. If War, this great Southern California based band, came out in this day and age, they wouldn’t even have a record contract. They, like much of their home state, were and still are multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and even multi-national. Like Marina Crouse they were simply great musicians. Back in the day, great music would often win out and find an audience and a large audience at that mind you.

Now, it isn’t even given a chance. That is until Jim Pugh’s Little Village Foundation steps in and produces musicians who wouldn’t be given an opportunity otherwise.

Crouse moves from that slice of urban funk mentioned earlier into a mid-60s Little Milton tune More and More, before visiting a Syl Johnson tune Any Way the Wind Blows. Both tunes are sung with verve, passion and care.

Then Crouse sings a bolero, Sabor A Mi. Before the program is all over Crouse visits New Orleans and an Annie Laurie’s rhythm & blues number, It’s Been a Long Time and closes everything out with a Dan Penn/Spooner Oldham composition In the Same Old Way. Somewhere in the mix is even a Bob Dylan tune sung in Spanish and it all works and works in a big way.

The entire album was recorded at Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studios (where else) in San Jose, California. It was Andersen who, along with Jim Pugh, produced Never Too Soon. Andersen plays guitar on all the tracks and Pugh does the same on piano and organ. Drummer Derrick “D’Mar” Martin and bassist Randy Bermudez round out the core band who performs on this CD. The entire ensemble lends sympathetic support and never gets in the way of or distracts from the supple vocals of Crouse.

What makes Never Too Soon is the voice and delivery of Marina Crouse. She wields a naturalistic instrument which is imbibed with warmth. It has an unaffected expressiveness that is simply refreshing. Her singing carries with it none of the vocal histrionics and clichés that mar so many female vocalists in this field. They, unlike Crouse, have never taken the time to learn the elusive and subtle dialect of the blues. She performs in two languages, yet seamlessly blends both to deliverer missives in the international language of music.

In talking to Jim Pugh, the founder of the Little Village Foundation, some time back he explained that one of the principal missions of the organization is to create cultural empathy through music. Marina Crouse does that all on her own and all on one album. That is quite an accomplishment.

Never Too Soon places Marina Crouse as an early front runner for the 2018 BLUES JUNCTION Productions’ Etta James Award for Best Female vocalist and this CD is, of course, a contender for Album of the Year. ~David Mac

Alabama Lovesnakes was formed in 2006 in Karlstad, Sweden, during the recording of Claes Nilsson’s country project ”The Wheels”. Late nights in the studio aroused an irresistible feeling in the band that just had to break loose – with the blues. Ten years down the road, the band is still made up of the same members, and has logged countless miles and gigs all over Sweden, Norway and Estonia. The band has been a regular headliner at Sweden’s largest blues festival, Åmåls Blues Fest, for ten years in a row and they attract great attention wherever they play. Collaborations have been made with lots of great artists such as: Swedish blues mogul Claes Yngström, Mats Ronander, and Hammond virtuoso Pierre Swärd, among others.

The members of the band are: vocalist and guitarist Claes ”Crocodile” Nilsson, bassist Fredrik Nilsson, and drummer Henrik Gillgren. The repertoire consists mainly of trio-based music and the band’s sound mixes elements of blues from both Chicago and Texas, combined with a Nordic roughness, which adds a special touch to the band’s attitude and groove.

Lazy Lester is, without doubt, one of the great blues harpists, whose somewhat lethargic style is distinctive and unique. I'm a Lover Not a Fighter acts as something of a tribute to the Louisiana blues scene of the 1960s, and reflects the growing interest in Louisiana blues that Lester's recordings have initiated. Containing such swamp blues classics as "I Hear You Knockin" and the inimitable title track, this release sees Lester in fine form, ably backed by some of the best musicians in Louisiana. Robert Allen Parker is a patient man. Some fifteen years ago, the local guitar ringer recorded his dream album with a cast of players to die for, including Hi Rhythm's Leroy Hodges on bass and Howard Grimes on drums. But as time passed, he came to feel dissatisfied with the record. The years flew by, and he became even more embedded in the Beale Street scene, working at Memphis Music Store there for nearly 20 years, and often playing all night at nearby clubs. He came to feel he could revisit and improve upon the concept of his original collaborative album, but bided his time.

Perhaps best known as the guitarist for Hope Clayburn and Soul Scrimmage, Parker can also be seen accompanying Beale Street stalwart Earl “The Pearl” Banks and others. Beyond that, you may know him by the documentary he worked on for a decade, Meanwhile in Memphis: The Sound of a Revolution, released in 2016. As he worked on that project, co-director Nan Hackman encouraged him to follow his instincts and re-cut that album of his dreams. He recently did just that, and the fruit of that labor will soon drop. Like the first album, Parker has assembled an all star cast, but, eschewing vocals himself, he's content to let his guitar lead the players through this collection. And, with each song performed by a different combo, Parker's guitar is a welcome thread of continuity, tying the tracks together. It helps that his tone is a perfect combination of growl and grit, nailing the sweet spot between choogle and boogie.

But, to his credit, Parker also stays out of the way, the more to let his guest stars shine. Perhaps the most poignant cameo here is that of Preston Shannon, who passed away this January. His three performances here are the last he ever recorded, and they bear witness to his vocal chops. And while most of the band on Shannon's tracks creates a seamless funk/soul stew, Parker's guitar adds a welcome bit of heaviness that one might not otherwise hear paired with Shannon.

Speaking of the seamless funk/soul stew, some of it is cooked up by the Hi Rhythm core of Hodges and Grimes, who play on tracks sung by both Shannon and Daddy Mack. And, as always, it's stunning how the bass and drums lock together on these numbers, bearing down like some relentless bulldozer, much in the way we've heard them on classic Hi records, not to mention their Grammy-nominated album with Robert Cray.

The material here is mostly comprised of chiefly Beale Street chestnuts, but there are many surprises, including several numbers by Parker himself, including the amusing “Belly Dancing Woman,” sung by Daddy Mack. But even the chestnuts are molded by each artist, in true blues tradition. Among the singers, besides Shannon and Mack, we hear performances by Chris Stephenson, “Dr. Feelgood” Potts, daughter Sheba Potts-Wright on the classic “Crazy 'Bout You Baby” (popularized by Tina Turner, and more locally by the Hellcats), and Smokey Yates narrating “The Story of the Blues.” Billy Gibson, Robert Nighthawk Tooms, and Malcom Burt contribute harp licks, and Randy Westbrook adds some piano and organ here and there.

But the standout tracks, to these ears, are those by Banks, whose voice ranges from a vulnerable Skip James falsetto to a weathered growl that well suits his 80-odd years. His “Floodin' Down in Memphis,” a reworking of Larry Davis' “Texas Flood,” combines ominous lyrics of disaster with a shrug-it-off blues shuffle. And two other numbers, featuring just the guitars of Parker and/or Banks, are all the more powerful for their sparseness, giving “You Don't Have to Go” and “Key To the Highway” new life, and capturing this local legend's voice in all its time-worn glory. ~by Alex Greene

Formerly the lead guitar player with multi BMA-award winner Louisiana Red, Johnny Ticktin (pronounced Tick-Tin), along with the Headhunters, is set to release his 8th album, “That’s All I Need.” The ten tracks are a testimony to his life-long obsession with the six string, covering the gamut of guitar centric styles from surf and swing to blues, Mambo and classic R&B. The Headhunters are joined by a couple of special guests on the collection of songs from heroes like Lowell Fulson, Magic Sam, and Link Wray that have shaped Ticktin’s guitar playing over the years.

The album opens with swamp blues proto type ‘That’s All I Need,’ from Magic Sam’s seminal 1967 album “West Side Soul.” Johnny pushes the tremolo guitar sound that made Sam famous even further evoking CCR and Tony Joe White. Venerated D.C. area keyboardist, Tam Sullivan, adds luscious piano and organ to the Bobby “Blue” Bland soul blues classic ‘Lead Me On,’ creating a vehicle for Johnny to ramp up the drama with his enduring vocal and sweet lead guitar. Johnny and the boys then get funky on the ode to shapely curves and Johnny’s other obsession and day job at JT Auto Service, ‘Body And Fender Man,’ originally written by Doc Pomus and Duke Robillard for Baton Rouge soul singer Johnny Adams. They smooth out the groove, while staying true to the guitar riff created by Chet Atkins, on 1957 Rockabilly B side hit ‘Chicken House.’ Lowell Fulson’s 1957 hit for Chess Records, ‘Rock ‘Em Dead,’ is given the Headhunter treatment, pushing the boogie woogie up a notch to a full-tilt dance-floor-filling roadhouse shuffle, and the frenzy continues for the blazing rip thru Elmore James slide guitar bombast ‘Shake Your Money Maker.’

Johnny pays tribute to one of the unsung heroes of reverb-soaked Garage Rock with a fun-loving take of Link Wray surf guitar instrumental ‘Ace Of Spades’ tossing in a little bit of Switchblade for good measure. Power house vocalist Liz Springer from acclaimed D.C. band Built 4 Comfort, is the special guest for the sassy duet ‘Watch And Chain,’ trading barbs with Johnny like June Carter on the late 60’s Bo Diddley beat romp from the Donovan catalog. A second Magic Sam cover, the classic Chicago Blues shuffle from 1958 ‘All My Whole Life,’ showcases Johnny’s guitar skills and the crack Headhunter rhythm section. Seasick Steve has been playing music all his life although he didn't start making a living at it until he was in his early sixties. He was born in Oakland, and took guitar lessons from K.C. Douglas who wrote the standard "Mercury Blues." He traveled the world busking, played as a session guitarist, and was befriended by Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell in the '60s. In the '80s, he produced the first Modest Mouse album This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About. He moved to Norway with his wife and family in 2001, and started recording his quirky blues tunes on an old four-track tape machine. After a heart attack, he got serious about his career and cut Dog House Music, which sold over 200,000 copies with little promotion.

An appearance on Jools Holland's BBC TV show, helped his next record, I Started Out with Nothin and I Still Got Most of It Left, go platinum in England. Man from Another Time follows in the footsteps of his breakthrough with a raw, unpolished sound that showcases Steve's skills on guitar, banjo, and diddley bo. The album was cut in real time on analog tape, and sounds as warm and funky as Steve himself.

"The Banjo Song" is a hard-luck tale that shows off Steve's moaning vocals and haunted banjo picking. "That's All" is a John Lee Hooker-style trance blues driven by Dan Magnusson's four-on-the-floor drumming, Steve's propulsive, fuzzy electric guitar licks, and an exuberant vocal. "Seasick Boogie" is a three-note stomper that sustains your interest by the force of Steve's wailing vocals, rhythm guitar work, and Magnusson's inventive percussion work. Atlanta-based singer/harmonica man Chicago Bob originally released this album in 1987, backed by the Shadows, the house band at the popular Blind Willie's blues club. This was also Bob's first album after leaving the Heartfixers, which also featured guitarist Tinsley Ellis. Bob (real name Robert Lee Nelson) shows a fine flair for songwriting on "Call My Landlady," "Your Time to Choose," "Stop What You're Doing" and "Bogalusa Boogie," injecting verses that are a cut above your standard blues couplets and show a sharp eye for imagery.

Bob also peppers the presentation with solid versions of J.B. Lenoir's "Mama Talk to Your Daughter," Jimmy Rogers' "In My Bed All Alone" and "Sloppy Drunk," Lazy Lester's "If You've Think I've Lost You," Jimmy Reed's "Little Rain," Little Walter's "Just a Feeling" and the title track. Guitarist Chris Cain has some stories to tell on his Unscheduled Flight, and each song is a masterful combination of vocal and instrumental elements. Most of Cain's tales deal with agony of being born under a bad sign - Cain describes the situations with poetic empathy - and Cain's lyrics avoid trite emotions and situations. In "Do You Call That a Buddy," a slow blues about a friend who repays the singer's generosity by stealing his woman, Cain focuses on the disintegration of the male friendship rather than the tired-and-true themes of love triangles or wrong-doing women.

He can also play lyrical lines, as emphasized in the funky "Bad Situation," while other songs find him bending notes or making them squeal. Unscheduled Flight proves that Chris Cain can do it all - write, arrange, play, and sing - with all the sincerity and power that the blues demands. /Living Blues

Born in 1955, Andy has been playing harmonica and singing professionally since 1977. He has recorded 7 LPs, 12 cds and two 45s. These recordings feature mostly Forest’s original songs. After living in Europe for ten years he returned to his home New Orleans in 1991 where he plays in clubs and frequently goes on tour in Europe and Canada.

Early influences were Sonny Terry, Little Walter Jacobs, Sonny Boy Williamson, James Cotton, Paul Butterfield, Taj Mahal and Charlie Musselwhite - to name a few. He has played on stage with B.B. King, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnny Shines, Champion Jack DuPree, James Booker and many other greats of the Blues.

Shaven-headed Johnny Heartsman did so many musical things so well that he's impossible to pigeonhole. His low-moaning lead guitar work greatly distinguished a myriad of Bay Area blues recordings during the '50s and '60s, and still played his axe with delicious dexterity and dynamics into the '90s. But Heartsman was just as likely to cut loose on organ or blow a titillating solo on flute (perhaps the unlikeliest blues instrument imaginable). He possessed a mellow, richly burnished voice to boot.

Through one of his principal influences, guitarist Lafayette "Thing" Thomas, a teenaged Heartsman hooked up with Bay Area producer Bob Geddins. Heartsman played bass on Jimmy Wilson's 1953 rendition of "Tin Pan Alley," handling guitar or piano at other Geddins-supervised dates. He cut his own two-part instrumental, the "Honky Tonk"-inspired "Johnny's House Party," for Ray Dobard's Music City imprint and watched it become a national R&B hit in 1957.

The early '60s brought a lot more session work - Heartsman played on Tiny Powell's "My Time After Awhile" (soon covered by Buddy Guy) and Al King's remake of Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby." By then, Heartsman's imaginative twiddling of the volume knob with his finger to produce an eerie moan had become his guitaristic trademark.

Stints in show bands, jazzy cocktail lounge gigs, and a stand as soul singer Joe Simon's trusty organist came prior to the inauguration of Heartsman's edifying back-to-the-blues campaign. In 1991, Dick Shurman produced Heartsman's most satisfying set to date for Alligator, The Touch. Rita Engedalen is Norway's definitive Blues Queen and one of the most profound female blues artists in Europe.

Engedalen debuted as a blues performer with the 2004 recording of her album "Hear My Song". She has since recorded five albums under her own name while receiving the Spellemannsprisen for her album "Heaven Is Not Ready For Me Yet" in 2006. Rita Engedalen has an international audience and she was the winner of the European Blues Challenge in Berlin in 2012.

She has recently returned from a musically rich trip to Mississippi, where she, in Clarksdale, was in a studio recording new version of "Heaven Is Not Ready For Me Yet". This time with the city's best gospel choir. This recording can be heard on the forthcoming album "Best Of Rita Engedalen", to be released at the Notodden Blues Festival 2018, both as a CD and on vinyl (LP).

The music: The style, directly inspired by music from the American South states. is a solid mix of American Blues, Gospel, Norwegian Folk Music, Roots Music and Hill-Country Music. Rita’s songs are original material she has written and which she performs in a distinctive and personal style.

Well, what do we have here. A new CD by Aki Kumar! And what a delight it is! But heck, Aki is ALWAYS a delight. His performances never fail to delight! This CD has blues, but also Aki’s adaptation of Bollywood music and blues. So, it’s not really a total blues record, but i’d think all blues fans and harp players everywhere will have a LOT of fun listening to this as i have. It is at the same time fun and interesting to let Aki take you on his musical adventure of bridging cultures. Consider it a new setting for blues and it’s in a huge party atmostphere provided by Aki and a bunch of excellent top-notch musicians. Many will enjoy Aki’s dissing of Trump in the politcal blues: All Bark No Bite. I believe Aki knows that to remain silent is to be complicit.

I’ve always been interested in blending blues and especially blues harmonica with music from other cultures and I think Aki has done a rockin’ job here! I’ve always been impressed by Aki’s singing and his harp playing has always been tasteful with great tone and phrasing. Check it out. I wouldn’t steer you wrong. This would be perfect for a party. "Telling these guys named Al King apart is like looking for a specific dune in the desert," a research assistant griped to his boss, vintage R&B blaring on a jukebox in the background. "That's a good image," the clever musicologist snapped, "because the guy you are looking for used to record for a label called Sahara!" Indeed, that is surely a better way of keeping track of this particular Al King than to think up some connection with Shirley, the name of another indie label that likewise put out his sides in the '60s and '70s.

The collected Shirley and Sahara singles were reissued in 1996 on the Forever More imprint on a collection entitled Blues Master. "My Name is Misery" and "Think Twice Before You Speak" indicate some of King's range as a performer, in this case from the pathetic to the threatening. "My Money Ain't Long Enough" and "Blue Shadows" are other King titles mixing compelling and common imagery. Many of these sides feature lead guitarist Johnny Heartsman, also a bandleader whom King began collaborating with in Oakland during the '60s. It's a shame that Michael Bloomfield's recorded legacy is so spotty. Generally speaking, the blues guitarist's finest moments are found on the universally praised first two discs with Paul Butterfield, the Electric Flag's A Long Time Comin' album, and the sporadic glimpses of greatness on his solo records. Unfortunately, there aren't many of those on It's Not Killing Me, Bloomfield's first solo LP released under his name in 1969. The main problem with this album is its lack of a powerful vocalist who could equally tackle blues, soul, and country. Singing was not one of the legendary guitarist's strengths, and he definitely wasn't capable of carrying that load over an entire record.

Instead of focusing on Bloomfield's guitar prowess and letting him arrange the American music he obviously loved so deeply, you get the impression someone at Columbia, or maybe even Bloomfield himself, wanted to turn him into a hip frontman à la Eric Clapton. It's especially odd considering the presence of blues belter Nick Gravenites singing backup on this session, not to mention additional vocals by the Ace of Cups and Diane Tribuno. It makes about as much sense as Led Zeppelin having Jimmy Page sing lead while Robert Plant played tambourine! It's Not Killing Me is recommended for completists only. /Al Campbell, AllMusic

In 1999, Hip-O Records, the reissue arm of Universal Music, issued a Delbert McClinton title in its Ultimate Collection series that contained 18 tracks and spanned McClinton's solo career from 1975 to 1997. Seven years later, Hip-O has taken another crack at a McClinton best-of for its The Definitive Collection series and improved on that earlier disc. (In the interim, there was also a 12-track McClinton compilation as part of the discount-priced 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection series and a good covers set, Genuine Rhythm & the Blues.)

The Definitive Collection includes 17 of the 18 tracks found on Ultimate Collection, the only exception being "Shot from the Saddle," and the newer disc adds another five tracks, including McClinton's famous harmonica performance on the 1962 Bruce Channel hit "Hey Baby" and the Delbert & Glen chart entry "I Received a Letter." That makes The Definitive Collection the most comprehensive McClinton compilation yet, but it still isn't definitive, much less ultimate. The problem is that McClinton has been on too many record labels, and while Hip-O has licensed material from Atlantic and Capitol to go along with material from Smash, Clean, ABC, Capricorn, and Alligator that apparently now resides in the Universal vaults or was otherwise acquired, there is still one important part of his discography missing.

McClinton's 1990s tenure on Curb Records isn't here, meaning that such songs as "Every Time I Roll the Dice" and "Tell Me About It" are not included. (Neither is the Capitol recording of "Good Man, Good Woman," McClinton's Grammy-winning duet with Bonnie Raitt, or anything from his affiliation with New West that started in 2001.) The best of Delbert McClinton still hasn't been captured on a single CD, but this is the closest anyone has come so far. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic
