"Electric Swamp Funkin' Blues" is the eighth album by one of the preeminent voices in contemporary blues music, Selwyn Birchwood. Birchwood's blues is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix' guitar sound and by the blending soul/blues/psychedelica sound of Prince and Sly and the Family Stone. The album opens up with an guitar intro called The Eagle Has Landed, in which the influence of Hendrix on guitarist Birchwood is imminent. After that the tone is set with the psychedelic soul of The Church Of Electric Swamp Funkin' Blues.

A sound that is also imminent in the blazing psychedelic blues rock of Should've Never Gotten Out Of Bed. Damaged Goods is furious soul blues and the blues is very much alive in the deep blues What I've Been Accused Of with Birchwood at slide guitar and in the burning romantic slow blues of Soulmate, a perfect match for Birchwood's guitar and vocals. Hammond B3 organist John Hetherington is featuring in two modern funky songs, All Hail The Algorithm and Talking Heads. With "Electric Swamp Funkin' Blues" Selwyn Birchwood proves to be one of blues foremost innovators, creating a modern blues sound blending blues with funk, soul and psychedelic rock. /Bluestown Music

The guitarist, lap steel player, songwriter and vocalist sets a course for the future of the blues with his visionary, original music. He calls it “Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues,” a mix of blues, blistering, psychedelic-tinged rock, booty-shaking funk and sweet Southern soul, played and sung with fervor.

On "Exorcist," Birchwood delivers a musically adventurous album. Recorded in Florida and produced by Grammy Award-winner Tom Hambridge, each of the 13 detailed songs was written and arranged by Birchwood.

The soul-baring tracks hit with lasting rhymes and unexpected rhythms. Each twists its own tale, ranging from the love-gone-wrong "Horns Below Her Halo" to the love-gone-terrifying "Exorcist" to the autobiographical "Underdog."

According to Blues Music Magazine, “Selwyn Birchwood heralds a fresh, exciting new direction in the blues. Toe-tapping, hip-shaking, joyful and inviting…expansive and focused, exploratory and time-honored, but always original.”

Birchwood wins over an audience with his warm personality, as down-to-earth as his music is thought-provoking. When he sits down to play his lap steel, he takes the crowd to a whole other level, with the music exorcising any bad times and troubles.

Selwyn Birchwood first picked up the guitar at the age of 13; by seventeen he was into Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Freddie King and Albert Collins. Birchwood was befriended by Sonny Rhodes who became his mentor and took him on the road. In 2014 Birchwood released his debut album “Florida Boy”.

Birchwood won the right to represent the Suncoast Blues Society at the 2012 International Blues Challenge and although he didn’t win; it proved to be a positive experience. Bruce Iglauer, President of Alligator Records, was judging and states “I was immediately impressed by how this young Floridian ruled the stage, strolling barefoot while playing searing solos and singing in his rough edged voice. He carried himself like a musician with years of experience.”

In 2013 Birchwood returned to the IBC, won first place was declared the IBC’s “Albert King Guitarist of the Year”. He was signed to Alligator and released his label debut “Don’t Call No Ambulance” the following year. As a result, Birchwood won the 2015 Blues Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut”. In 2017 Birchwood followed up with “Pick Your Poison” and received two more BMA’s nominations including “Contemporary Blues Male Artist”; and followed up with a second “Contemporary Blues Male Artist” nomination in 2019.

The current band lineup includes Birchwood, guitar, lap steel, glockenspiel and vocals; Regi Oliver, baritone, tenor, and alto saxophones, and piccolo flute; Donald “Huff” Wright, bass; Philip “Squeak” Walker, drums; and Walter “Bunt” May, Hammond B-3, Wurlitzer and piano. The album is produced by the Grammy winning Tom Hambridge and recorded at the Phat Planet Studios in Orlando.

All songs and arrangements (including horns) were written by Birchwood who adds “I tell my stories in my own way, with my own voice. You won’t ever hear me on stage singing someone else’s songs. Muddy Waters, B. B. King, and John Lee Hooker all told their own stories. That’s what I’m doing.” Birchwood opens with the rocking “I’d Climb Mountains” and states “with the keyboards it’s like we’re a whole new band with a bigger footprint; I can really stretch out on guitar while still featuring the baritone.” On “I Got Drunk, Laid and Stoned” Birchwood plays the lap steel as he sings “she was out all night, she got drunk laid and stoned…my baby hurt me to my soul, she cut me to the bone…I’m going out all night, gonna get drunk, laid and stoned”.

The title track, “Living in A Burning House”, is built around a ska beat, which quickly becomes unrecognizable, as it’s replaced with some serious funk before Birchwood takes a blistering but fluid solo, followed by a tenor solo from Oliver. “You Can’t Steal My Shine” is a gospel inspired celebration with another insane solo.

On “Revelation” Birchwood is joined by Hambridge who sings the backing vocal before Birchwood shreds his Gibson. “Searching For My Tribe” features another emotive lyric “I can’t take no rest, till I complete my quest…I’m searching for my tribe.” On my favorite “She’s A Dime” Birchwood sings “my baby’s, she’s a dime, she ain’t no six, seven, eight or nine, and she’s mine, all mine” while Oliver plays his baritone sax.

On “Mama Knows Best” Birchwood is joined by the BMA winning Diunna Greenleaf as they share a duet. Birchwood’s best vocal might arguably be the outstanding “One More Time”, featuring a baritone solo from Oliver, and backing singer Cece Teneal. Birchwood switches back to the lap steel for the funky “Freaks Come Out At Night”.

The band is at their best on “Through A Microphone” with the lyric “and the only time I feel whole is when I’m baring my soul for you through a microphone”. “Rock Bottom” is another funky tune with strong bass from Wright, May’s organ, and Birchwood’s soulful vocal and stinging guitar. Birchwood closes with the airy “My Happy Place” with Oliver on sax, as he sings “one-part melody, one-part harmony, a splash of imagination, that’s all it takes to make, my happy place”.

Birchwood puts his own unique spin into the making of this baker’s dozen, “it stops just being music and start’s being medicine… when it’s made with love”. Thank you Selwyn. ~Richard Ludmerer

Selwyn Birchwood is among the most extraordinary young stars in the blues. His deep familiarity with blues tradition allows him to bust the genre wide open, adding new sounds, colors and textures all delivered with a revival tent preacher’s fervor and a natural storyteller’s charisma. Since the 2014 release of his Alligator Records debut, Don’t Call No Ambulance, Birchwood’s meteoric rise from playing small Florida clubs to headlining international festival stages is nothing short of phenomenal, as he continues to set the contemporary blues world on fire. The album received the Blues Music Award and Living Blues Critics’ Award for Best Debut Album Of 2014, and he won the 2015 Blues Blast Rising Star Award. Selwyn and his band have crisscrossed the U.S. and Europe repeatedly, delivering unforgettable live performances. With his new album, Pick Your Poison, Birchwoodtakes a major step forward, crafting visionary blues for a new generation of forward-looking fans. Birchwoodwrote and produced all 13 songs on Pick Your Poison. The cutting-edge songs are made all the more impactful by Birchwood’s gruff vocals, his untamed musicianship and his band’s seemingly telepathic accompaniment. “I write and sing what I know,” says Birchwood, whose innovations are as expansive as his influences. “This album has a broad reach. It’s for young, old and everyone in between.” Birchwood, his father from Tobago, his mother from the UK, was born in 1985 in Orlando, Florida. He first grabbed a guitar at age 13 and soon became proficient at mimicking what he heard on the radio. But the popular grunge rock, hip-hop and metal of the 1990s didn’t move him, and he quickly grew bored. And then he heard Jimi Hendrix. “He was larger than life. What he did was mind-blowing. When I realized Hendrix was influenced by the blues, I found my path,” he says. By 17, he was deep into the blues, listening to Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins and especially Buddy Guy. As luck would have it, just as Birchwood was discovering Guy, the blues master had a concert scheduled in Orlando. Birchwood was there, front and center. “I was floored,” he recalls. “I completely connected with the blues. I knew I had to make this music.” As Selwyn’s guitar proficiency grew, a friend told him that his neighbor was a blues guitarist and had a band. The 19-year-old Selwyn went over to check it out and jam. The guitar-playing neighbor turned out to be the Texas-born blues legend Sonny Rhodes, who was instantly impressed with the enthusiastic young guitar slinger. Within one month’s time, Rhodes asked Birchwood to pack his bags and join him on the road. It was an incredible experience for Birchwood, as Rhodes took the young man under his wing, teaching him not only guitar and lap steel, but also how to conduct business, how to run a band, and how to reach an audience. “Sonny always said, ‘Play what’s in your heart.’ I’ve never lost sight of that,” says Birchwood. Rhodes insisted Birchwood go to college and always held the guitar spot in his band open for Selwyn whenever he was available. It was a win-win situation, as Birchwood—through hard work and scholarships—received his MBA from The University of Tampa. “I challenged myself to get that degree,” Birchwood says. “These days, it’s not good enough to just be a good player.” Combining the musical lessons learned from Rhodes and his business acumen, Birchwood created The Selwyn Birchwood Band in 2010, featuring veteran musicians older than Selwyn, testifying to Selwyn’s musical chops and his leadership skills. On stage, they play off each other with ease, feeding off each other’s energy, sharing the fun with the audience.

Influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Sonny Rhodes, and the self-taught guitarist was born in Orlando, went to school at the University of Central Florida and received his MBA at the University of Tampa. In 2011 the self-released FL Boy helped the band land gigs outside of their Tampa home, where they were becoming local heroes. Birchwood and his band won their way to spots at the 2012 and 2013 International Blues Challenges in Memphis. The 2013 victory opened more doors for Birchwood, increased his exposure and helped the band land a deal with Intrepid Artists booking agency, which led to more and better gigs.

The Selwyn Birchwood Band has been touring non-stop since winning the IBC. The band has performed at festivals including The Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, Springing The Blues Festival, The Tampa Bay Blues Festival, The North Atlantic Blues Festival, The King Biscuit Blues Festival as well as on The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. Birchwood has opened for major blues stars including Robert Cray and Buddy Guy and has shared the stage with another friend and teacher, Joe Louis Walker. He recently had the opportunity, when performing in San Francisco, to bring his friend and mentor Sonny Rhodes on stage to sit in with his band. It was a moment Birchwood will never forget. "He did so much for me; it was a real honor to return the favor, if only a little."
