Johnnie Johnson, Clayton Love and Jimmy Vaughn pack 100 years of red-hot rock 'n' roll history on Rockin' Eighty-Eights, a jumping piano-music anthology from Modern Blues Recordings.

Rockin' Eighty-Eights is the label's first new-recordings release, following three issues of classic post-war blues by Freddy King and Albert King.

The album is an exuberant celebration of rock 'n' roll's piano-musicorigins by three keyboard giants -- including Johnnie Johnson, whose powerhouse playing fueled the young Chuck Berry's music and sparked Berry's greatest hits.

Johnson, Love and Vaughn head up an all-star cast on a dozen vital, digitally-recorded vocal and instrumental selections featuring the Johnnie Johnson Band and special guest artists. Outstanding performances of new compositions and traditional gems showcase a range of boogie-woogie, blues and R&B piano styles.

The album's three piano masters were all active in the 1950s St. Louis R&B scene that was to have national influence on the sound of rock 'n' roll and "modern" city blues. All three have worked with Little Milton and Albert King. Johnson and Vaughn play on a number of the seminal Albert King recordings reissued on Let's Have A Natural Ball.

Clayton Love's feelingful singing and fluid piano work have been honed over a career that includes releases on the Trumpet, Groove, Aladdin and Federal labels.

Jimmy Vaughn (1925-1991) made his mark as a pianist, arranger, composer and vocalist in performances and recordings spanning almost half a century of blues, jazz and R&B. His selections on Rockin' Eighty-Eights are his final legacy.

Ike Turner - That Kat Sure Could Play!: The Singles 1951-1957 (4 CD)

Ike Turner's life may have been a controversial one, but their can be little doubt of his significant contribution to the blues, rhythm & blues and rock musical worlds. A four CD box, "The Legendary Ike Turner: The Kat Sure Could Play! presents 118 songs (and over 5 hours of music) from singles Turner played on between 1951 to 1957. Some of these recordings include famous recording like "Rocket 88" by Turner and his own band The Kings of Rhythm, and others are backings to recordings by the likes of Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Johnny Ace, Bobby Bland and Elmore James.

There are so many historic recordings here starting with Rocket 88, but also including King's 3 O'Clock Blues, Wolf's How Many More Years, Boyd Gilmore's raucous Rambling On My Mind, and Rosco Gordon's No More Doggin'. There is a terrific delta juke joint band session that produced Drifting Slim's Muddy Waters pastiche Good Morning Baby, and Sunny Blair's house rocket, Step Back Baby. Junior Brooks terrific Gonna Let You Go is a reworking of a Muddy Waters recording with Ike on piano as he is on Elmore's frantic broom dusting on Please Find My Baby. Ike is present on Little Milton's early If You Love Me Baby as well.

Ike also had his own coterie of musicians including Eugene Fox whose Sinner's Dream and the two-part The Dream, are interesting bits of story-telling with Ike's evocative use of tremolo in his guitar noticeable. As The Sly Fox, Eugene Fox had a couple of other gems with his extroverted vocals; Hoo-doo Say (with a solo from Ike) and I'm Tired of Beggin'. Lonnie the Cat's I Ain't Drunk is a choice cover of a Jimmy Liggins tune that Albert Collins made famous. Johnny Wright's The World Is Yours is one of several times Ike adapted lyrics to Guitar Slim's The Things I Used To Do with Wright shouting with considerable vigor as Ike makes effective use of his Fender's whammy bar during his solo.

Some of the latter recordings come from when Turner recorded for Federal and include such gems as Billy Gayles I'm Tore Up, Just One More Time, and Let's Call It A Day; Jackie Brenston's Gonna Wait For My Chance and Clayton Love's She Made My Blood Run Cold and Do You Mean It. Also heard are instrumentals including Cubano Bop and Trail Blazer.

Jesse "Tiny" Kennedy Jr. had recorded with the great Kansas City pianist Jay McShann for Capitol in 1949 prior to joining Tiny Bradshaw's jumping band as one of its featured front men. After a session with Elmore James in 1951 didn't result in anything releasable, McMurry sent Kennedy up to Sam Phillips's fledgling Memphis Recording Service in September of 1952. Musicians on the session, which produced the fine "Strange Kind of Feelin'," "Early in the Mornin', Baby" (with overdubbed crowing by "Elmer, the Disc Jockey Rooster"), and "Blues Disease," included guitarist Calvin Newborn and saxist Richard Sanders. After a 1955 date for RCA's Groove subsidiary, Kennedy disappeared permanently from the R&B scene.
Pianist Clayton Love was a prominent member of Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm during the mid-'50s, making some of his finest platters with the legendary band. But Love made his first vinyl appearance on Lillian McMurry's Jackson, MS-based Trumpet Records in 1951 with his own jump band, the Shufflers. The combo was a fixture around Vicksburg, where Love was attending Alcorn A&M as a pre-med student. Love's cousin, Natchez bandleader Earl Reed, had recorded for Trumpet and recommended his young relative to McMurry. Love's 1951 debut, "Susie"/ "Shufflin' with Love," exhibited infectious enthusiasm if not a great deal of polish.
These are Jerry McCain's earliest sides, cut in 1953 and 1954 for Lillian McMurray's Trumpet label in Jackson, Mississippi. Both sides of his two Trumpet 78s plus the addition of three previously unissued tracks make up his total output for the label, so the collection is filled out with five tracks by Tiny Kennedy plus two by pianist Clayton Love. Although longtime axeman Christopher Collins is well to the fore on these tracks, McCain's harp is somewhat underrecorded, giving a lopsided effect to the music. But minor gems like "Stay Out Of Automobiles," "Fall Guy," "Middle Of The Night" and "Crazy 'Bout That Mess" are all sign pointers to the Excello material and make this a collection well worth seeking out. -- Allmusic.

From there, Love moved over to Aladdin in 1952 (with saxist Raymond Hill's band backing him), Modern (with Turner on guitar) and Groove in 1954, and in 1957, Love fronted and played the 88s with Turner and the Kings of Rhythm on their Federal platters "Do You Mean It," "She Made My Blood Run Cold," and "The Big Question."

Turner had nothing to do with Love's pair of 1958 singles for St. Louis-based Bobbin Records; bassist Roosevelt Marks led the backing band for the clever coupling "Limited Love"/ "Unlimited Love." Long settled in the Gateway City, Love made an album for Modern Blues Recordings in 1991 with fellow ivories aces Johnnie Johnson and Jimmy Vaughn, Rockin' Eighty-Eights. ~bio by Bill Dahl
