Martin And His Rhythm Kings consists of Martin Abrahamsson (guitar, vocals), Elias Björck (bass) and Anders Nygren (drums). They are a trio from Varberg that has been a part of the Swedish blues scene for years. Their first CD was called "Blue Earwax," and now it's time for number two, "Some People Ruined It All". This is a superb 5-songs CD which received reinforcements by Stefan Dafgård on harmonica (one half of Svensson & Dafgård, former member of The Instigators and Dominators) and Örjan Hill on piano and Hammond organ (member of Hill Blues Unit, previously in the Al Tehler Blues Band).

Born and raised in Louisiana, Gray moved to Chicago after service in World War II. A pupil of Big Maceo, he began playing in clubs, first with Little Hudson, later with Morris Pejoe. He also accompanied Jimmy Rogers and other Chess artists, notably Howlin' Wolf, playing in his band from the mid-'50s to the late '60s. He then returned to Louisiana, where he has worked round the Baton Rouge area with local artists like Tabby Thomas and Silas Hogan.

Bluesfans investigating Gray's work for the first time should take note that he has a fairly static repertoire. The tracklist for this albums, is all of which appear somewhere on the previous albums, some more than once. But if you haven't got those albums, you can choose to regard 'Plays Chicago Blues' as a useful roundup of what are obviously his favourite numbers. There's a nod, naturally, to the Wolf and a couple of songs from the Elmore James folio, and are memories of old Memphis. The band plays by the Chicago book, generally but with a good deal of oomph, helping Gray to make the best of what he's got.

Monster On The Loose is a rock track all the way and helps accent the onset of Do My Dance. Country wasn't forgotten with the inclusion of Bobby Magoo. Track seven is Mommas Baby Pappas Maybe, an old skool funk track with a comedic tale to tell. Mr Everything is all about the blues from head to toe before escalating into Love Machine, a hard driving story of lust & love. And it ends with the title song Sure Love, a beautiful heartfelt ballad to bring it all home. All of this encompasses a full well thought out CD that allows Junior to shine as a front man. Humor, Love, Old Times, Having fun, its all there. In one package. Just like Junior himself. A little something for everyone to enjoy.

After his tenure at Chess, Otis Rush signed with Duke Records in Houston, who only released one 45 during his entire five year stay at the label. This Vanguard session from 1966 was his first in several years and finds him in exemplary form. Backed by a tough little club band, Otis' guitar tone is crystal clear and well focused, while his singing is simply superb. With two excellent instrumentals aboard ("Rock" is Otis' version of Earl Hooker's "Universal Rock"), the other big ticket highlight is the version of "I Can't Quit You, Baby" that Led Zepplin would later copy note for note on their first album. After three studio albums a live Blue Commotion record was long overdue, although the wait has allowed the band to compile a sizeable and varied body of work to draw on. Proceedings open with the choppy soul strut of 'Your Sun Shines Rain' with Rob Koral's beefy guitar and Pete Whittaker adding 60s Go Go organ accents, before the smoky last waltz vibe of Billie Holiday's 'Fine & Mellow' allows Zoe's vocal to run the gamut from seductive Eartha Kitt breathiness to tonsil-wobbling power, interlaced with rob's complex fills.

A staccato beat lends 'Smile' a ska-like vibe, assisted by the oscillating horns of Ian Ellis and Andy Urquhart: Zoe's mellifluous vocal lines contrast well with the jerky backing, all topped with Rob's discursive guitar. The horns also underpin the snare-led 60s soul of 'Sat It Isn't So' and their interjections and the unison horn-guitar riff and rich textures to 'I'll Do Anything'. The upbeat vibe continues with the kicking two-step 'Liberated Woman' and the lighthearted 'Last Time' romp of 'Let Me Sing The Blues': that latter proving an ideal vehicle for Si Genaro's harp and Si also features heavily in the rockabilly call-and-response of 'Take Me Back'.

Zoe's voice really shines in the slower blues: impassioned in the imperious 'Beatitudes', oozing plaintive headache on 'We'll Find A Way, and her vocal gymnastics on 'I Believe In You' show formidable range. The unexpected highlight is 'Angel Of Mercy': brooding guitar, Paul Robinson's metronomic rim-shots and Bach-tinged organ evoke progressive acts like Focus or Procul Harum before closing with a highly proggy switch to the major key!

This sophisticated album proves that, as with so many bands, live is where it's really at. ~Moray Stuart

Dirty Memory is an acoustic collaboration with Jason Ricci featuring bassist Tim Lefebvre (Derek Trucks/SNL) and Neil Heidler (Eddie Harris).

Having traveled over many musical territories as a songwriter, singer, guitarist and producer, JJ Appleton has always used one compass - the blues. After seeing Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee at age 10, he was hooked and crooked.
JJ was born into the paternal influence of a political radical & musical genius who played his son 87.6% of the Folkways catalog. Rebelling as teens do, JJ left the sweet smells and deep snows of Vermont for New York City - moving on to paying the rent singing on Diet Coke commercials, co-writing with pop-tarts & charlatans, and all the while playing looong guitar solos in smoke filled halls of ill repute.

A what-the-hell series of phone calls to hire led to a joining of forces between JJ Appleton and 2015 Grammy nominated Jason Ricci, a world heavyweight champion harmonica player, bluesman, songwriter and personality. The legendary Otis Spann gained renown as Muddy Waters' pianist throughout the latter musician's classic period of electric Chicago blues. Spann was also influential as a member of the Chess label's house-band, which backed a roster of blues giants and big selling artists. However, Spann's importance extended beyond his work as a sideman. He showed off his brilliance as a blues vocalist on a series of splendid recordings in a well-lived (though not extensive) solo career. This quintessential 2-CD set presents Otis' prolific session in New York City, on August 23rd, 1960. The date was produced by Nat Hentoff, and featured guitar master Robert Lockwood Jr., with some vocal help from “St. Louis Jimmy” Oden. John Cocuzzi is a hugely-talented singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He normally wows the crowds in the Sacramento, CA, area, but for his latest CD for EllerSoul Records, he made the two-thousand mile trek to nearby Franklin, TN, at the Rock House studio, with the venerable Kevin McKendree producing. The result is “Ding Dong Daddy,” thirteen cuts of swingin’ blues and jazz. For John, the swing is sho’ nuff the thing. As well as piano, he is adept on drums and a monster vibraphonist, and he struts his considerable stuff over the course of this set, which has plenty of straight blues, piano boogies, and vibe-driven instrumentals. He kicks off with one of our perennial favorites, the “Swanee River Boogie.” He and the band really get into the groove John lays down on the vibraphone instrumentals, from the title cut down thru “You Do Something To Me,” “The Boss,” and the subdued “Come Sunday.” All these feature clarinet or sax from Dan Levinson. John hits a New Orleans stride with “Ballin The Jack,” then plays a great, torch-y, tale of the first flowerings of a budding love affair, “Nina Never Knew.” John’s father, Frank, who plays drums throughout, is the featured vocalist on the set-closer, the sweet standard “They Say It’s Wonderful.” We had favorites aplenty. You can’t go wrong with John’s slowed-tempo “Tennessee Waltz.” He gets down to the bidness of the blues with a cool read on “Reconsider Baby,” with Kevin McKendree on acoustic guitar. The “Kambucha Boogie” is a humorous look at a way to “rejuvenate your system” with a “health juice” that is reminiscent of (and probably 100 proof, as well!) getting a shot of Hadacol from our youth. And, society’s dependence upon cellular telephones, whether a necessity or not, is the tongue-in-cheek “Call Me". John Cocuzzi has been dubbed a true “Gentleman Of Jazz” by iconic jazz drummer Louis Bellson. He’s got mad skills on a vast array of instruments, and you get a taste of ’em all from this “Ding Dong Daddy.” Until next time…Sheryl and Don Crow.

Panned by many a critic upon its 1969 release, Otis Rush's trip to Muscle Shoals sounds pretty fine now (with the obvious exceptions of "My Old Lady" and "Me," which no amount of time will ever save). Alan Wright is a humble man with a deeply passionate musical style that reminds one of the blues-based rock styles of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker and Boz Scaggs, as well as the traditional electric blues styles of BB King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf, and yet is uniquely different from them all too. Alan Wright has a ton of heart, and that is where his music comes from. His talent is huge. His live show cooks with great soulful rockers as well as traditional-style blues. Alan's strong, deep, throaty, and soulful voice, at times soaring and raucous, is enormous and natural for singing the soulful roots based music he loves and writes. and is readily identifiable. He plays hot and tasty electric and acoustic guitars. It's really greasy with lots of hot sauce on it. He is a great guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His guitar playing is pure and powerful. Such as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, BB King, Howlin' Wolf, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Sly and the family Stone, Al Green and Boz Scaggs, all get covered with the respect and seasoning and talent that they deserve.

With the release of his CD, Ain't Gonna Be Your Dog, in May of 2003, it is clear that Alan Wright is a blues-rock talent to be reckoned with. There are eleven strong tracks on his CD, all of them written, performed, sung, and produced by Alan, with the exception of Come To Me, which was co-written with Jay Spell. Alan is a gifted songwriter. All of the tracks on the new CD are cool rootsy rockers, with the notable exception of Po' Ol Bluesman, which is pure traditional-style electric blues. Currently reigning as the best blues and R&B Instrumentalist in Detroit, where he’s a perennial nominee for top honors, Howard Glazer delivers searing signature guitar lines regardless of the format. Equally accomplished on slide, electric and resonator guitars and a longtime veteran of the Motown music scene, he follows up his highly acclaimed 2013 release, Stepchild Of The Blues, delivering a collection of originals that stick closely to the blues format rather than blues/rock common to his most recent work.

The son of a professional sax player who worked with Don Pablo & His Orchestra, Glazer put down the trumpet for the six-string at age seven and has worked in everything from jazz to punk ever since. He grew up listening to the MC5 and the Stooges, but made his foray into the blues in the early ‘70s after meeting poet/activist John Sinclair. That relationship resulted in an introduction, recording session and long friendship with first generation superstar Honeyboy Edwards. He’s also worked extensively with Harmonica Shah.

Glazer’s style of blues has always incorporated a sense of rawness and anticipation common to Motor City Music as well as containing his own inner-most thoughts, and that’s definitely evident here. Joining Howard in the studio for this session are a rhythm section of Chris Brown on bass and Charles David Stuart on drums. They’re augmented by singers Maggie McCabe and Stephanie Johnson as well as organist Larry Marek on four tracks and trumpeter David Kocbus and flutist Tom Schmaltz on one track each.

An explosion of nuclear-powered Chicago blues from 1958-'60 Atomic-H masters including many previously unissued recordings! A full hour containing 23 songs, most of which are not on the LP version. Atomic-H Records was a tiny label that recorded blues and gospel but only issued a few 45s. It was owned and operated by Rev. Houston H. Harrington who was also Eddy Clearwater's uncle and was responsible for Eddy making his way to Chicago from Alabama. This cd-reissue features new descriptive notes containing additional information about Atomic-H and personnels. With Eddy Clearwater, Sunnyland Slim, Morris Pejoe, Henry Gray, Jo Jo Williams, Little Mack Simmons and others. Eddy was known as "Clear Waters" on his first four Atomic-H sides, in tribute to Muddy. But the influence of Chess Records’ rock’n’roll genius also was evident in the Chuck Berry-ish "Hillbilly Blues". On a more serious topical note, Sunnyland Slim comments on how hard it is to make ends meet with the "Recession Blues." But he’s in party-hearty spirits on "Everything’s Gonna Be Alright." Though both these 1960 tracks feature Matt Murphy on guitar, S.P. Leary on drums, and J.T. Brown on sax, neither were released. Quite a few tracks have roots that seem to have come around from Big Town, Louisiana, rather than up from rural Mississippi. Vocalist Johnny Rogers’ "I Am a Lucky, Lucky Man" sounds like it could have been cut in Cosimo Matassa’s New Orleans studio rather than on Chi-town’s West Side. Morris Pejoe and Henry Gray were from Louisiana, and there’s no doubt about it on pianist Gray’s "How Can You Do It?" and Pejoe’s "Let’s Get High". Rev. Harrington may have also had his eye on the almighty dollar when he recorded novelties like the Jo Jo Williams tracks, "Rock and Roll Boogie" and "Davy Crockett’s Jingle Bell Blues." The latter is a bizarre instrumental — imagine Santa Claus wearing a coonskin cap — so hilariously dissonant and off-kilter that it makes me think: whatever they were on, I want some. Harrington was something of a visionary, so it’s no surprise he would be fascinated enough by the Russian and American space race that he’d have Harmonica George Robinson cut a record called "Sputnik Music".

Bluestone from Oulu, Finland, released its first full-length CD titled It takes time in early February 2007 and received rave reviews for it in Finland. It has now been shortlisted in the United States for the Blues Release of the Month.

The pioneers of traditional Chicago-blues in Finland, Bluestone has been active in its original line-up since 1993. The recording process was true to the genre: there were no overdubs and almost all entries were first takes. Special attention was also paid to the sound world. The recording process took place in an old school gym, which accounts for the big sound on the record. The artists are: Matti Loppela (guitar), Pekka Pulkkinen (vocals/harmonica), Markku “Maxx” Perälä (piano/organ), Miikka ”Chef” Kivimäki (bass) and Jari Korpimäki (drums).

What sets Duke Tumatoe apart from the mob of contemporary guitarists who practice the blues these days is his sense of humor. He usually finds something to chuckle about in the barroom tales he spins, where the pain and misery on display is more often than not self-inflicted and just as often hilariously ironic, at least in Duke's view. Oh, he falls into the trap of tired blues clichés occasionally, which is pretty much endemic in the genre, but then he pops out with a song like "My Baby Is a Nudist" and all is forgiven. At some point when you're down and out you have to laugh to keep from crying, and that's apparently Dr. Tumatoe's philosophy. You've Got the Problem! doesn't break any new ground in this regard, mixing stock blues pieces with goof ball gems like the aforementioned "My Baby Is a Nudist" and the whiskey-drenched title tune, both of which would stand a chance on the country charts if the commercial music industry wasn't so darn divisional. Also worth mentioning here is the mostly acoustic "Mudcat Man" and the closing track, "Moanin' After Blues," which has a wonderful afterhours feel thanks to some jazzy trumpet lines from P.J. Yinger. Elsewhere the album plays by the numbers, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there are approximately one thousand hard working but creatively challenged guitar slingers out there doing this exact sort of generic blues stuff, so it is a little disappointing when the Duke falls into the same bag. When he unleashes that delightfully wicked wit, though, he rises above the mob and becomes something special.

Kolow books some gigs in the Sping of '91 and drummer Ric Haddad, bassist Rick Kolow, and Mezzrow do the 1st MEZZ Germany tour.
1993 "Luxury beyond Belief" is the 1st MEZZ release on Fortune Records.
1996-2001 Mezzrow moves to Germany and brings various rhythm sections over from Boston and New York to tour.

Where does this name MEZZ come from anyway?

"Mezz has always been my nickname." says Jeff.

But Mezzrow's father's cousin, Milton "Mezz" Mezzrow, was also a musician. He was a jazz clarinetist and saxophonist from the twenties through the sixties. Milton Mezzrow played with such notables as Gene Krupa, Sidney Bichet and Bix Beiderbeck.

He was a pioneer in race relations, having formed the first interracial group to perform in New York. When it came to drugs, Milton was infamous. He was so reknown for his evangelistic attitude toward marijauna that in 1930's New York, a joint was called a Mezzirole!

This one is a winner from start to finish. If you have been wondering who would take the torch from the older blues masters who are getting on in years, this performance will help answer that question. This 6ft 4 inch guitar picker from Norway seems to be the second coming of Freddie King and the blues world has a star on the rise. Kid Anderson has been playing with some heavyweights such as Charlie Musselwhite and now Rick Estrin but has managed to record a few solo albums along the way as well. This was released in 2003 and features guests Junior Watson, Mark Hummel and Terry Hanck. It's all here - excellent guitar, great songs, fine vocals, good driving beats. This CD is fresh, very enjoyable modern blues covering a variety of styles from the atmospheric Hangover Day to the boogie of Lil' Earthquake and the fun Chuck Berry style rocker I Really Love My Monkey. Recorded on November 5, 1971, Live at the Gaslight stands as the final recording of Delta blues legend Mississippi Fred McDowell. The bottleneck guitarist was 67 years old when this album was cut, but his voice and playing show no signs of age and his passion and conviction seem to have strengthened with the years. At this point in McDowell's career he had shifted to playing electric slide guitar, and during this Gaslight performance he was also supported by sparse bass playing from Tom Pomposello. Accompanying McDowell's gruff voice, the guitar often seems to finish the singer's sentences for him; it's like listening to an old married couple. The setting is very intimate, allowing for friendly interaction with the audience and warm reactions to McDowell's occasional introductions and commentary. Throughout the two-disc set there is a real sense of inspiration as if the singer was releasing this music from his soul for the first time. One of the first things McDowell admits is that he "don't play no rock & roll," but the raw power of even his soundcheck nearly contradicts that statement. While there are slight distractions on the first disc (an out-of-tune rendition of "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," a confusing tracklisting error on the back cover), there are certainly points of interest including the plaintive cry of "Baby Please Don't Go" and the righteous crunch of "You Got to Move." While the first CD has a few minor trouble spots, disc two really shines. The soulful moan of "Goin' to the River" blasts into the fiery punch of "Shake 'Em on Down," openly disputing his proclamation that he doesn't play rock & roll. The reverential conviction of "Good Mornin' Little Schoolgirl" precedes the last two songs, both inspirational numbers in true blues style: "Don't Mistreat Nobody" instructs his audience to be kind to their fellow man, and "Get Right Church" is almost a duet with his familiar bottleneck slide, chillingly foretelling his upcoming journey "home." Live at the Gaslight is a bright example of the raw power of Delta bottleneck blues by one of the genre's masters, and is not to be missed.

Coming from a Blues background and playing mainly Blues for 10 years, my playing took a stylistic turn when I decided to learn Country Guitar, expanding my right-hand finger picking technique. 3 years later was the birth of “ Country Fried Chicken ” of which the single “ String Pie ” made # 1 on the Independent Music Network Country charts U.S.A.
After working some time with this new technique I found the cross over from Country to Rock very similar, emulating some of my favorite Rock/Fusion players ( Greg Howe, Scott Henderson, Richie Kotzen ) I soon found myself recording “ Strat Attack”. My vision was a high geared over driven Rock Guitar album with lots of solo’s, heavy riffs with a strong depth of harmony. By far the best of Dupree's three albums for Bullseye Blues, this collection was cut during the pianist's first trip home to the Crescent City in 36 long years. Born and raised in New Orleans, Dupree was a popular recording artist as early as 1940, eventually making hundreds of records for Okeh, King, Atlantic and other labels. Dupree left New Orleans in 1954, but he returned in 1990, at age 79, to play the Jazz and Heritage Festival and to record this album. Some tracks are just Dupree and his longtime guitarist Kenn Lending; the rest include a crack New Orleans band including guitarist Wayne Bennett, trumpeter Teddy Riley, bassist Walter Payton Jr., and tenor saxman Alvin "Red" Tyler.

Duffy Kane is an American country blues-rock boogie rebel who plays a mean guitar, howls up a sandstorm and writes a helluva insightful lyric. Dave Bartholomew proved himself to be a man of many talents: bandleader, trumpet player, songwriter, producer, arranger, talent scout, businessman, and more. He was also a recording artist, scoring one national R&B hit (“Country Boy,” which went to #14) in 1950. However, it was in his nonperforming roles that Bartholomew had the greatest impact on popular music. One of the key architects of the New Orleans sound, Bartholomew served as a major behind-the-scenes figure in the transition from jump blues and big-band swing to rhythm & blues and rock and roll in the postwar era. In particular, he will forever be revered for his work with Fats Domino, one of the Crescent City’s greatest musicians and a true pioneer in the rock and roll revolution.

Bartholomew brought Domino to Imperial Records in 1949 and collaborated with him as a songwriter, producer and arranger until 1963 (except for a year-long business-related hiatus in 1951). The records they made together introduced the big beat of New Orleans to the world. While Bartholomew’s work with Domino dominates his resume, that charmed association is only part of the story. The list of acts that Bartholomew worked with over the decades is a who’s-who of New Orleans rhythm & blues, including Smiley Lewis, Lloyd Price, Shirley & Lee, Earl King, Roy Brown, Huey "Piano" Smith, Chris Kenner, Robert Parker, Frankie Ford, James Booker, Jewel King, Bobby Mitchell, James “"Sugar Boy"” Crawford, Pee Wee Crayton and Tommy Ridgley. Beyond his work with Domino, two of the biggest records in which he played a major role were Smiley Lewis’s "I Hear You Knockin’" (written by Bartholomew) and Lloyd Price’s "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" (with Domino on piano), which was the top R&B hit of 1952.

By the time Keith and I left Renaissance I was getting to really enjoy song writing. I began singing too, which was a bit strange, but I have quite got into it! I taught myself how to play guitar chords and a bit of piano. I’d always had a lot of ideas, always heard a lot of things in my head and that got to be quite good. I thought it would be nice to do a whole album of songs that I’d written.

Odds are better than even that you’ve never heard of the band unless you live in Marin County in California. You will know Dave’s first band of notoriety, Big Brother and the Holding Company, for which he began playing drums for back in the 60’s. He was with the band as they began to make a name and a following for themselves in the idyllic, flower power days in San Francisco. He was there when an unknown girl from south Texas wandered into the band’s life and worked her way in as their lead singer. The girl? Janis Joplin. The rest, as they say, is history.

The title song from the album were lyrics that she gave to Dave after hearing a riff that he was playing in a rehearsal studio. Not long after giving him the lyrics, she left the band for a solo career and an untimely death. The lyrics remained unrecorded until now, with two renditions of the tune: one opening the album and the other closing it. In between those two gems of the same song is a rich tapestry of musicianship from Big Brother mates Sam Andrew, Peter Albin and the late James Gurley. The vocals are provided mostly by the incredible Kathi McDonald as well as Andra Mitrovich, Sonny Walker and Lynn Asher. If you’re looking for “Son of Big Brother” project, forget it. While the work of BBHC stands on its own, this work by Getz is excellent in its own right and gives the legendary drummer plenty to be proud of.

The Pistolwhips are a blues-infused indie rock band from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Over the years, the term R&B has been used to describe everything from the 1950s doo wop of the Five Satins to the hip-hop-influenced urban contemporary of Erykah Badu and R. Kelly -- in other words, a variety of African-American popular music with roots in the blues. Arbee Stidham was exactly the sort of singer who thrived in the R&B or "race" market after World War II; although essentially a bluesman, he wasn't a blues purist who embraced the 12-bar format 100 percent of the time. But his mixture of blues, jazz, and gospel made him quite popular among what were considered rhythm & blues audiences in the 1940s and 1950s. Recorded for Prestige's Bluesville label in 1960 -- eight years before Stidham's death -- Tired of Wandering is among his finest albums. This session, which boasts King Curtis on tenor sax, doesn't cater to blues purists; while some of the tunes have 12 bars, others don't. Regardless, the feeling of the blues enriches everything on the CD; that is true whether Stidham is turning his attention to Big Joe Turner's "Last Goodbye Blues" or revisiting his 1948 hit, "My Heart Belongs to You." Equally triumphant is Brownie McGhee's "Pawn Shop," which is associated with Piedmont country blues but gets a big-city makeover from Stidham. Like Jimmy Witherspoon -- someone he inspires comparisons to -- Stidham demonstrates that the blues can be sophisticated, polished, and jazz-influenced without losing their grit. The big-voiced singer/guitarist was born in Arkansas, but Chicago was his adopted home -- and the Windy City had a definite influence on his work. Anyone who has spent a lot of time savoring jazz-influenced bluesmen like Witherspoon and Percy Mayfield owes it to himself/herself to give Tired of Wandering a very close listen. ~Review by Alex Henderson
