Album: Jungle Walk
Size: 31,1 MB
Time: 13:27
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2015

1. Jungle Walk (3:25)
2. Nobody Wins (2:45)
3. Blue Monday (3:50)

Born in 1968, Greger "Knock-Out Greg" Andersson first heard the blues at age 15 when legendary Swedish blues singer Sven Zetterberg showed up at Greg's local school in rural town Gnesta, Sweden as part of a blues in the school's program. It was a mind-blowing experience and from that day on Greg devoted his life trying to master the artform of playing blues and roots-oriented music.

Starting out as a guitar player, he formed his first group in 1985 together with his younger brother Marcus on drums and the rest is history. The two brothers have been touring the world with different band constellations up until this day and have played well over 2.000 shows together. At age 19, Greg also started playing harmonica and was soon on a journey to mastering the instrument wich was to become his main weapon of choice, inspired by legends like Little Walter, Big Walter Horton, Sonny boy Williamson and George Smith. Among contemporary harmonica players, Gary Primich and Kim Wilson have been great inspirations to Greg's playing. The following years he spent most of his free time practicing on that mysterious little instrument, and today he ranks as one of the top players in Europe.

The first full length album under Greg's name was released in 1994 as Knock-Out Greg & Blue Weather on Last Buzz Records. The debut was followed up by four more albums on that same label. Two more records were cut with the Blue Weather constellation before they decided to part ways in the early 2000s - one on Finnish label Goofin' Records, and one on Norwegian label Blue Mood Records - and the group made seven records in total. Two more albums by Knock-Out Greg have seen the light of day, one by Knock-Out Greg & the Injectors in 2015 and one by Knock-Out Greg & the Jukes in 2019.

Since 2020 Greg's been touring and recording with his main group called Knock-Out Greg & the Blue Flames, a five piece unit consisting of brother Marcus Andersson on drums, Fredrik von Werder on keyboards, Tomi Leino on guitar and different bass players like Jonas Göransson, Tommy Cassemar, Gunnar Muwemba, Jaska Prepula among others. You can also find him fronting a smaller gritty sounding constellation by the name of Knock-Out Greg Low Down Trio with Björn Viitanen on drums and Tomi Leino on guitar. Greg is also performing regularly with Eric Bibb and Big Band Splash to mention a few, as well as being backed up by local musicians at clubs and festivals all over the world.

Personnel: Greger "Knock-Out Greg" Andersson (vocals, guitar); Thomas Hammarlund (guitar); Jonas Göransson (bass); Marcus Andersson (drums); Christian Herluf Pedersen (tenor saxophone); Jakob Norgren (baritone saxophone).

Knock-Out Greg & Blue Weather was a Swedish band that toured professionally for 8 years all over the world, USA, England and Russia among other countries. They also performed at a lot of blues festivals in Scandinavia and Europe like Notodden Bluesfest (Norway), Burnley Bluesfest (England), Stockholm Jazz & Bluesfest (Sweden) and Mönsterås Blues Fest (Sweden). Their style mixed retro jump blues with true Chicago sounds, a la Little Walter and Howling Wolf. Greg's harp playing certainly stands the test as he is firing away one solo after the other and the singing is distinct! This band was one of the hottest in Scandinavia and deserves a listen everywhere else. Even the cold Swedes can play the blues!!

At age 14, when still a mixed up teenager in Sweden, Swedish godfather of blues, Sven Zetterberg showed up at Greg's school one afternoon. He sat down on a chair in front of 20 kids singing and playing some guitar and harmonica. Sven played like never heard before. He also told amazing stories about long gone blues-players like Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson among others. Greg got totally swept away by his expression and from that very day he turned his head towards the Blues. At age 20, Greg was so fed up with guitar-playing that he decided to switch to harmonica. This CD jumps and swings with his life of influences.

Jakob Norgren: leader, arranger, conductor, baritone sax; Fredrik Oscarsson: trumpet; Jan Kohlin: trumpet; Jonne Bentlov: trumpet; David Ljunggren: trumpet; Olle Hedstrom: trumpet; Jens Filipsson: alto sax; Lina Lovstrand: alto sax, flute; Kai Sundquist: tenor sax, bassoon; Christian Herluf Pederson: tenor sax; Fredrik Ruud: trombone; Mats Aleklint: trombone; Magnus Wiklund: trombone; Klas Eriksson: bass trombone, tuba; Kristoffer Siggstedt: bass trombone, tuba; Mathias Lundquist: keyboards; Magnus Josephson: guitars; Lars Ekman: bass; Johan Svensson: drums; Andreas Ekstedt: percussion; EllyEve, Kristina Talajic, Graciela Chin A Loi, Tad Robinson, Marino Valle, Linn Segolson, Knock-Out Greg, Sven Zetterberg: vocals.

Although Swedish-born and —based saxophonist Jakob Norgren's orchestra has been making waves for several years, Volume 5 is only the second of its recordings to churn up the waters in this estuary. And churn them it does, even though Norgren's blend of R&B, soul, pop, blues and funk far outweighs the album's minimal jazz content.

Norgren's charts, we are told, encompass songs associated with Otis Redding, Beyonce, Etta James, O.V. Wright, Otis Rush and B.B. King, among others, a statement that must go unchallenged here, as none of those performers has earned a place in this listener's lexicon. To put it another way, Norgren's orchestra is swimming and splashing in uncharted waters, which makes a sober appraisal more perplexing than might otherwise be the case. That said, we shall plow ahead with the ardor of a Michael Phelps until that purpose has been achieved.

One thing is clear at the outset: Sweden boasts a surprisingly large number of singers who seem well-versed in these genres, as no less than eight are featured on the album's dozen tracks. Each of them sounds credible, even though that opinion must be tempered by a general unfamiliarity with the music. The last selection ("Well, I Done Got Over It") is especially poignant, as it showcases Sven Zetterberg, one of Sweden's most celebrated soul and blues musicians, who died last year at age sixty-four. The other vocalists are Kristina Talajic ("Love Addict"), Tad Robinson ("Baby, Don't Lose Your Cool"), Graciela Chin A Loi ("Love, Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere," "Suga Mama"), Marino Valle ("Down in the Valley," "That's How Strong My Love Is"), EllyEve ("All I Could Do Was Cry," "Don't Freeze on Me"), Linn Segolson ("Baby, Please Don't Go") and Knock-Out Greg ("You Don't Know," "Working Man").

While Norgren's charts are persuasive and the ensemble well-grounded, whatever splash the album makes rests on one's penchant for soul, blues and their close cousins, R&B and funk, as the album is by no means aimed at a jazz audience. For what it is, however, it seems to be quite well done. ~Jack Bowers

Jakob Norgren Big Band Splash was started in 2004 and on our first two albums Wide Meadow Soul (2005) and East Of The Arctic Circle (2007) we mixed contemporary jazz with soul, blues and even some electronica. In 2010 we shortened the name to just Big Band Splash and decided to let the band develope into a soul/rhythm & blues/soul-jazz orchestra, which was manifested on the album Another Apple. Contemporary jazz would instead be performed under the name Jakob Norgren Jazz Orchestra.

In 2014 we released (digital only) the album Big Band Splash – “The Soul Collection” where we gathered soul tracks from our first three albums. Featured singers are Sven Zetterberg, Marino Valle, Greta, Stella & Sunniva Bondesson (Baskery), Knock-Out Greg and Graciela Chin A Loi.

Håkan Forshult at Last Buzz Records has been the leader of Scandinavian blues for longer than most of us have been listening to the blues. He has found and recorded top artists such as Knock-Out Greg & Blue Weather, Day Warren, Sam Rocket & His Blues Prisoners and Jump 4 Joy. Various Artists - All That Blues From Sweden! Vol. 1&2

Swedish blues lives, is vital, and is developing. Stylistically, the breadth is great - rhythm and blues, southern soul-spiced blues, boogie woogie, shuffles, juke joint blues, bittersweet slow blues, jump blues, traditional country blues, and even country blues at top speed with a punk attitude. Songs, tempos, and feelings which give rise to everything from partying on down with two more pints from the bar, to sitting in a corner with your tears diluting a tightly clenched glass of whiskey. As Jimi Hendrix once said, "The blues is easy to play, but hard to feel". /Excerpt from the liner notes for All That Blues From Sweden! Vol. 2

Recording a cover of a well-loved or vintage song selection can seem like sheer laziness, but it can actually be a daunting task when there's reverence for the culture and material. One would be hard-pressed to find a band that would successfully interpret modern and classic soul music that originated over a continent away, but Big Band Splash has accomplished just that with their latest release, The Soul Collection.

Delving into a smorgasbord of modern-day and back-in-the-day favorites, Big Band Splash closely follows the nuances of the originals without attempting to outright 'Xerox' every inflection and ad-lib. The 24-member ensemble whittles itself down to a dozen or so main performers when it comes to stage work and vocalizing (Gracelia Chin A Loi, Greta Bondesson, Sven Zetterberg, John Nemeth, Knock-Out Greg, Marino Valle and Sunniva Bondesson), but the sound stays brassy and exuberant.

For every cover that shadows its source of origin - Willie Hightower's "You Used Me Baby", Ann Sexton's "I Had a Fight With Love", Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good", Buddy Guy's "Well I Done Got Over It" - there are others that differ in texture, tempo and feel. Albert King's "Drowning On Dry Land" is tweaked and polished, yet grittier, but "Valerie", most recently popularized by the late Amy Winehouse, feels pensive this time around rather than jaded.

If their Swedish roots make it hard to believe that Big Band Splash can convincingly convey soul, think again: there are some major skills and chutzpah at work in channeling the spirit of Sam Cooke ("That's Where It's At"), the fervor of James Brown ("It's a Man's World"), Etta James' irony ("Tell Mama") and yes, even the sugary soul-lite of Beyonce's "Suga Mama" with energy and intent. The difference in accents is noticeable in their interpretations, but not so much that they detract from the sound. /Melody Charles

Big Walter Horton (1918-1981) was recognized as one of the best blues harmonica players of all time. Fans of Horton, and fans of 50's style Chicago/Memphis blues in general, will enjoy this anthology of Swedish artists paying tribute to their master. Although the names will be umfamilar to most American blues fans, artists including Sven Zetterberg, Jan Sjöström, Thomas Grahn and Sture Elldin (among the six featured) play in a wide range of Horton styles and even manage to sing in his fashion. Some tracks ("Louise, Louise" and "Everybody's Fishin'") feature only guitar and harp but most are ensemble efforts. "Cotton Patch Hot Foot" is played as quartet; the knocking of the woodblocks lends it an almost cowboy flavor. "Little Boy Blue" features the swooping, expansive lines Horton was famous for and "Sneakin' and Hidin'" reworks one of the powerful slow blues Horton recorded for Testament. Lovers of blues harp will find Horton's Briefcase to be an enthusiastic and well-played ode to one of the blues' finest harmonica players.

Anyone who questions just how far and wide the influence of the blues has become need look no further than this project. Once upon a time it would have seemed absurd to think of four guys from Sweden going back to their 'blues roots'. Yet there's been a strong and vibrant Scandinavian blues scene ever since the so-called 'blues revival' of the sixties. And if further proof is needed, a single listen to this excellent collection ought to convince anyone that Sweden's blues bands are the equal of any. The gentlemen listed on the disc's cover - Thomas Hammarlund, Sven Zetterberg, Knock-Out Greg and Thomas Grahn - probably won't be familiar to many readers beyond Sweden's borders. All are veterans though, with extensive backgrounds. They're backed here by a revolving cast that includes various members from the bands each normally fronts. This is an absolutely stellar effort, proof that the blues are indeed a universal language and that there's no borders when it comes to the ability to play 'em convincingly, with both commanding authority and a lot of fun.
