Nappy Brown was a blues and R&B singer who began his career singing gospel before turning to blues in the mid-1950s, recording for the Savoy label throughout this core era of his career, when he was greatly admired by Elvis Presley who often saw him perform in Memphis. His powerful and adaptable vocal style is widely seen as a key strand in the development of soul music, and after fading from view after the '50s he made a comeback during the 1980s to enjoy renewed popularity.

This excellent value 52-track 2-CD set comprises the A & B sides of his Savoy singles from these years, including two titles recorded at the beginning of his recording career as a member of the Heavenly Lights gospel group, before signing to the label as a solo artist. It includes the No. 2 R&B hit "Don't Be Angry", plus his other hits "Pitter Patter", "Little By Little", "It Don't Hurt No More" & "I Cried Like a Baby", and his classic song "(The Night Time Is) The Right Time", which was covered by Ray Charles to score a Top 5 hit. It's a comprehensive overview of the primary era of his recording career, and a fine showcase for the talent of a distinctive and influential performer.

Rolling his consonants like a crazed cantor, shouter Nappy Brown brought a gospel-imbued fervor to his rocking mid-'50s R&B that few of his peers could match. Backed by some of New York's finest sessioneers, Brown roars 16 of his best early Savoy sides on this essential purchase. "Don't Be Angry," "Just a Little Love," "Open Up That Door," and "Bye Bye Baby" rate with his hottest jump efforts, "I Cried like a Baby" and "It's Really You" are hair-raising blues, and "Little by Little" rides a bouncy, pop-accessible groove. Now where's volume two? /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Napoleon Brown Goodson Culp (October 12, 1929 – September 20, 2008) better known by his stage name Nappy Brown was from Charlotte, North Carolina. He began his career singing gospel music before switching to R&B. In 1954 he won a recording contract with Savoy Records, which yielded a series of hits, including "Don't Be Angry" (#2 R&B, #25 pop, 1955), "Pitter Patter" (#10 R&B, 1955), "Little By Little" (#57 pop, 1956), and "It Don't Hurt No More" (#8 R&B, #89 pop, 1958). The hits dried up so Brown spent the next couple decades touring, performing his hits, quickly becoming an oldies act.

In the early 1980s, following the Blues revival buoyed by ZZ Hill's smash "Down Home" album, some of Brown's early songs being released on European albums. At the urging of Bob Margolin, former guitarist for Muddy Waters's band and a fan of Brown, Brown returned to the music industry, beginning with a successful tour of Scandinavia in 1983. New Brown recordings appeared in 1984 with the album "Tore Up", with guitarist Tinsley Ellis' & the Heartfixers. In 1987 Black Top Records released the acclaimed "Something Gonna Jump Out the Bushes". Ichiban Records next signed Brown for two albums, 1990's "Apples & Lemons" and 1991's "Aw! Shucks".

Over the next sixteen years Brown kicked around from label to label like JSP, Ripete, RBD & New Moon until one last comeback album for Blind Pig. That album, 2007's "Long Time Coming", proved to be one of his very best LPs and he received several Blues Music Awards nominations and his highest profile since the 50s. Brown died in his sleep on September 20, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Nappy Brown w. The Heartfixers - Tore Up

3. Heartbreak (3:14)

9. Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You (3:09)
10. Jack The Rabbit (2:38)

After too many years during which he was missing and presumed forever lost in action, Brown returned to prominence with this very credible album, cut with backing by guitarist Tinsley Ellis and the Heartfixers and originally issued on the tiny Landslide logo. He reprises his salacious blues "Lemon Squeezin' Daddy" and rolls his R's like the good old days on dusties by Little Walter, the Midnighters, Howlin' Wolf, and even Bob Dylan and the Allmans. /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

7. Don't Be Angry (2:18)
8. Small Red Apples (4:43)
9. Somethin's Gonna Jump Outta The Bushes And Grab You (3:37)

Early '90s jump blues, shouting R&B, and gospel-edged soul from Nappy Brown, who made his finest material in the '50s and '60s, but has done some exuberant material during the '80s and '90s. While his voice doesn't have the swagger or ferocity it did in its heyday, it's still impressive enough to give this the residue of authenticity. /Ron Wynn, AllMusic

10. You Were A Long Time Coming (3:06)
11. Nothing Takes The Place Of You (3:48)
12. I'm Walking Out On You (3:38)

Ultra-solid support from guitarists Anson Funderburgh, Eugene Ross, Ronnie Earl and Earl King, and Black Top's superb house horn section, makes this Dallas-cut set one of Brown's best contemporary albums. His lusty shouting style works well on covers of the Dominoes' "Have Mercy Baby," the "5" Royales' title track, a pair of Earl King-penned numbers, and Robert Ward's "Your Love Is Real." /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

**Track 1 incorrectly listed as "Voo Doo Dust" by Mighty Joe Young.**

In an article for The Guardian titled ''Belgium's 'Popcorn: the last underground music scene in Europe'' musician and writer, Bob Stanley wrote ''the purity of Belgian Popcorn is its very impurity. R&B, Broadway numbers, tangos, Phil Spector-Esque girl groups, and loungey instrumentals, they are all constituent parts of a rare, and still largely undiscovered scene. It won't stay that way forever.''

Sadly the trademark ''Popcorn'' dance style (that reminds me in more than one way of the American ''Shag'' dance and culture still so popular in Carolina) stayed pretty much in Belgium. Everywhere else, the British ''vision'' of the Popcorn genre and dance seem to be the most popular version around the World (just like all the other similar genres I mentioned) and not the original and Belgian Popcorn. In the current ''international'' version of Popcorn (mainly focused on the gritty R&B side of the genre) the minor key seems to be almost mandatory and slower Northern Soul dance moves replaced the original hand dance that was actually a slower version of ''classic'' 1950s rock and roll dancing. On the other hand, this created a new ''buzz'' that seems to appeal to younger generations, while in Belgium the Popcorn crowd is mostly composed of people over 40. For strange that it seems only a few compilations of American and other R&B and pop music in the Belgian Popcorn style (also known as ''Oldies Popcorn'') have been released to this day. Before this series (of 3 volumes) none of them focused on blues (even if lotta songs included here are already regarded by many as ''classics'' of the genre) so I decided to change that. that with a truckload of boss platters straight from his old record box. This second helping of boss ''Popcorn Blues'' tracks anthology features more great tunes. Dig it! ~Little Victor (a.k.a. DJ ''Mojo'' Man)

In the argot of American popular music, the word "horn" is used for any wind instrument, most often the saxophone, but it is also applied to all woodwinds and brasses, especially those played by soloists. In this context "horn section" refers to a group of wind and brass instrumentalists — usually comprising saxophone, trumpet and trombone players; sometime singularly, and sometimes in pairs or more of each instrument. The horn section usually has written parts which are prepared by an arranger using orchestration to provide a harmonic and melodic accompaniment to a song or musical group. In some cases, the horn section may improvise a simple backing part using well-known "stock" lines.

Horn sections are an integral part of musical genres such as jazz, R&B, blues, funk, calypso, ska, soul music and gospel music. Most of these horn sections feature some combination of saxophones, trumpets and trombones. More rarely, other wind or brass instruments such as flute, clarinet or tuba may be added. Other popular musical genres, such as rock and pop, also use horn sections.

When we talk about those artists who represent the transition between blues/r&b and soul it is usually Ray Charles, James Brown and Sam Cooke who come to the fore. The subject of this 2CD collection, Nappy Brown is not usually in the mix but after you have listened to this collection of his singles released between 1954 and 1962 you will certainly be wondering why.
Hear Brown's voice bellow and roar across these 54 tracks and on hits like "Don't Be Angry", "Pitter Patter" and "It Don't Hurt No More". The gospel delivery and arrangement of "The Right Time" caught the attention of a young Ray Charles who was currently hitting the big time with outrageous blues versions of gospel songs. He covered it and retitled it "(Night Time Is) The Right Time" and secured a hit that eventually went on to become a standard.
Nappy never compromised his sound despite his huge popularity in the teen pop market and as such this collection really doesn't sound as old as it is.

Recorded, helmed, and mostly produced by Phoenix, AZ blues renaissance man Bob Corritore (club owner, record label exec, writer, manager, radio DJ, and harp player), this hour-long disc is a potent example of loose, straight-ahead blues played with guts and low-boil intensity. Spanning 1986-1998, these 16 tracks recorded in Phoenix and Tempe studios feature a variety of classic bluesmen such as Lil' Ed Williams, Henry Gray, R.L. Burnside, Bob Margolin, Jimmy Rogers, Pinetop Perkins, and Bo Diddley (who is prominently pictured with Corritore in the CD's tray). It's well-recorded - clean but never slick - and the performances find a genuine and spontaneous rugged midtempo groove. Which is exactly what the blues should be.

So even if you've never heard of such vocalists as Dino Spells, Jimmy Dotson, Clarence Edwards, or Chico Chism, they prove nearly as gifted and freewheeling as some of the more recognizable names. Corritore, who plays prominent harp on every track, is an exceptionally talented musician, even if his instrument seems a little higher in the mix than you might expect. The songs, all of which are covers, are especially well selected. Instead of jaunts through traditional, often stale standards, most are relatively obscure choices that allow the band to stretch out in a variety of established blues tempos. Even when Nappy Brown digs into Charles Brown's oft-covered "Driftin' Blues," (altered here to "Nappy's Driftin' Blues"), the vocalist tears through it with the passion and intensity of someone who wrote the song. A take on Eddie Boyd's popular "Five Long Years" is similarly inspired.

This is a real find for deep blues fans and an enjoyable if not essential listen for everyone else. Bob Corritore has assembled a classy collection that finds all of his players - both popular and obscure - in top form. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Over two-plus decades, Bob Corritore has become one of the most reliable sidemen as a talented blues harmonica player, popular with younger musicians and veterans. This compilation features Corritore in a variety of settings over that 20-year period, with all-star bluesmen galore. Each track singles out his exploits with such notable blues legends as Koko Taylor, Louisiana Red, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Eddy Clearwater, Henry Gray, Pinetop Perkins, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, and Little Milton among countless others.

There's no way to pick the best songs (they're all great) unless you favor certain types of blues from boogie, choogling struts, or rough-edged, down-and-dirty Southside Chicago shouts. The funniest track is Nappy Brown's feature "Baby Don't You Tear My Clothes," sung in a deep, ribald manner. In an ultimately classic style, vocalist Lockwood and pianist Gray team up on "That's All Right," while Clearwater takes the cake on an upbeat and joyous "That's My Baby." The lesser known Chief Schabuttie Gilliame cops Howlin' Wolf during "No More Doggin'" and "Tell Me 'Bout It" whiles Louisiana Red comes closest to the immortal style of Muddy Waters.

Throughout is Corritore's biting, literate, clean harmonica playing that fortifies, glues together, and inspires these-well known artists. Nothing less than a fantastic collection of authentic American music, Harmonica Blues is a must-have item for any fan of this music. /Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic

Deep Sea Diver is a competent, but not particularly inspiring live album recorded in 1989. Occasionally, Nappy Brown turns in a fiery performance -- particularly on "Things Have Changed" and the title track -- but just as often, his singing is workmanlike. There are enough good moments to make the album worthwhile for fans, but it is not an essential purchase. ~Thom Owens

In 1996 Ripete Records brought out The Best of Both Worlds, a pleasantly rowdy electric blues album by Napoleon "Nappy" Brown and the late Kip Anderson, natives of North and South Carolina, respectively. Stocked with standard jump blues material, some of it dating from the heyday of Brown's early successes as a Savoy recording artist, the punchy '90s production makes this a natural choice for cheerful reckless celebration and stress release. Highlights are a cover of Sticks McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee", a jammin' rendition of "Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well", Brown's famous "Night Time", and "Don't Be Angry", Anderson's rockin' "Knife and Fork", and a kicker of a version of "Hit the Road, Jack". If you're fixing to blow off a little steam, want to light a fire under a party, or just need a nice friendly kick in the butt, this might do it for you. /Arwulf Arwulf, AllMusic

NAPPY BROWN (1929-2008) made an indelible impression on Black Music. Both as an artist and as a person. His many hit recordings and performances on endless tours in the mid 50's established Nappy as a major force. More than any others, Nappy Brown, Ray Charles and groups such as the "5" Royales and James Brown's Famous Flames affected the future of Black Music. His sudden disappearance from the limelight, like that of Johnny Ace, Little Willie John or Little Richard, enhanced the mystery surrounding him.

In the early 1980s, a renewed interest in R&B led to some of Brown's early songs being released on European albums. Brown returned to the music business, beginning with a successful tour of Scandinavia in 1983. During this tour, together with blues guitarist KNUT REIERSRUD, this album was recorded.

In his later years, Nappy Brown received several awards, and his contribution as one of the key figures in the R&B, as well as being a main influence of the soul music, was widely recognized. At the ceremony for the Blues Music Award in May 2008, Nappy Brown gave one last electrifying performance, capping an incredible comeback year. ~Jon Larsen

R&B sounds completely realized during the 1951-’55 period are covered on the third disc, Things Have Changed. However, Savoy was now competing with Atlantic and other heavyweight record companies for talent and the 21 songs present are of variable quality. Singer Nappy Brown, flaunting his trademark trill, is killer on two tunes, but cuts by Washington aspirant Varetta Dillard, teenager Earl King in New Orleans and doo-wop sentimentalists the Dreams (supposedly with Charles Mingus on bass) are no great shakes. Fourth volume Hot Rod offers a sampling of what Savoy served up during the rock’n’ roll craze of the late ‘50s, from Hal Singer’s sax meltdown “Hot Rod,” to dynamite vocalist Big Maybelle’s “Candy” and “Blues Early,” to entertaining obscurities from secular gospellers Gay Poppers, Philadelphia band-leader-drummer Billy Hope and blues testifier Little Danny (Kittrell) with ace guitarist Jimmy Spruill. ~Frank John Haley

Nappy Brown - Night Time Is The Right Time (2-Disc Set)

Nappy Brown began his career as one of early rock's best vocalists. "Don't Be Angry," the 1955 breakthrough that kicks off this double-disc set of 36 sides for the Savoy label, displays his brilliant stylistic tics: melismas, stutters, a powerhouse vibrato, and the trademark "li-li-li-li-li" that he used to make his steel-edged baritone recognizable to the teen audience. These were techniques he adapted from singing in church as a boy in North Carolina and, later, touring in gospel groups. They served him well. "Don't Be Angry" reached the top of the R&B chart and became a No. 25 pop hit. But this is the eight-year story of how he became one of the great blues shouters of the 1950s, along with Wynonie Harris and Roy Brown. After tunes like disc one's "Goody Goody Gum Drop" threatened to turn his rubber-lipped fillips to self-parody, Brown matched his roots in spiritual singing to the corporal themes of the blues--much as Ray Charles did to ignite soul music. The result was hard-hitting numbers like disc two's "Down in the Alley" and "Baby, I Got News for You." These still ring with maturity and depth--and rock the house--40 years later. --Ted Drozdowski
