It's East coast meets West coast as the swinging, jazzy jump style most associated with California blues gets roughed up with a shot of Memphis R&B, courtesy of Jackie Payne's gutsy vocals. Bring in the Sweet Meat Horn Section horns (Carl Green on tenor and alto sax and trumpet player John Middleton) for a finger-popping time and the result is a consistently engaging platter without any soft spots. Although Steve Edmonson is a fine if slightly laid-back guitarist, this really is singer Payne's show. His voice swells, bellows and hits the sweet upper register like Al Green, but also has the ability to shift into a salty growl similar to that of Bobby "Blue" Bland. He makes even standard issue fare such as the lazy shuffle of "Woman in Kansas City" sound vital, if not quite electrifying. It's natural to compare the soul singer/guitar slinger duo to that of Anson Funderburgh and the late Sam Myers as well as Smokin' Joe Kubek with Bnois King, and both are somewhat appropriate but not entirely correct. This is really soul music with a shot of blues, compared with the opposite for the other twosomes. All but four tracks are band originals (interestingly credited to all four members), with covers of material from O.V. Wright ("A Nickel and a Nail"), Eddie Floyd ("Just the One"), and Brook Benton ("I'll Take Care of You"), all of whom are obvious influences on Payne's vocals. The liner notes point out the similarity in the relationship between Edmonson as Steve Cropper supporting Payne's Otis Redding, and there are certainly analogies there. Regardless, this is a successful collaboration that hits all the right notes and yields one of the finest soul/blues albums of 2006. Payne is a real find and any fan of the genre will thrill to his fiery performance here. ~Hal Horowitz

“Beg, Borrow & Steel” was recorded in Australia, mostly with acoustic instruments, live in the studio in 12 hours and is a journey back to the roots of Gwyn Ashton’s music: Gwyn shines on slide guitar, with most of the tracks played on a 1936 National steel guitar. His all-Australian backing band provides just the right touch of harmonica, double bass, piano, Hammond organ and drums (with brushes, natch!) to help create an album steeped in the ultimate musical authenticity and yet incredibly varied.

The majority of “Beg, Borrow & Steel”’s tracks are self-penned, with the exception of Gwyn’s stand-out version of Muddy’s “I Can’t be Satisfied”. From the up-tempo train song “Train Time Shuffle” to the beautiful instrumental “Uluru Sunset” or the laid back delta blues “Leaving in the Morning”, Gwyn Ashton confirms his exceptional talent both as a songwriter and a performer.

This legendary showcase tour is now 17 years old, but the concept remains unbeatable and therefore unchanged. Three up-and-coming talents from the most respected blues label in Europe. Three live sets that run the gamut of genres and emotions. And to top it off, a huge jam session where all the artists let loose together - and ask the audience to do the same.

On 09.03.2022, Katie Herny, Will Jacobs and Ghalia Volt did just that! At Café Hahn in Koblenz, these 3 outstanding artists made the audience shake. This CD & DVD immortalises this unique concert and lets the viewer and listener relive a great evening over and over again. Katie Henry is one of a kind. On stage she flits between vocal mike, piano and Gibson SG in a style that encompasses rock, roots, R&B, soul, funk and pop. You might be reminded of Bonnie Raitt for a moment. But it is her very own genuine charisma, her honest songwriting and the musician's impressive skills on two instruments that have earned her her reputation.

Will Jacobs a modern blues R&B/soul artist from Chicago, Illinois, USA. At 28 years old, he is best known for his powerful live performances. Whether he is playing clubs, festivals, performing with other world-class musicians, contesting sessions or composing, Will is always excited to share his passion for music with audiences.

Brussels-born Ghalia Volt has lived and toured in the US for many years and has embraced the original blues like few other European artists. The singer and guitarist first caused a stir as frontwoman of the New Orleans-based Mama's Boys; her 2019 album Mississippi Blend cemented her reputation as an exceptional talent. In early 2021, she released her album One Woman Band, which was recorded at the prestigious Royal Studios in Memphis. An album where she could prove her skills as a multi-instrumentalist.

On Handful of Blues, Robben Ford strips his sound back to the basics, recording a set of blues with only a bassist and a drummer. The group runs through a handful of standards, including "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "I Just Want to Make Love to You," and a number of made-to-order originals. Throughout the album the musicians play well, but Ford's voice is never commanding. However, this is a minor flaw, since his guitar speaks for itself. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

His early influences included the Beatles, Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and later, Albert King, Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Powder Blues and Downchild - to name a few. Such diverse interests help to explain why Mike is comfortable in so many musical genres, especially jazz and blues.

Mike is also highly in demand as a sideman and has backed up many international artists such as , harmonica legend Lee Oskar, Garou, Roch Voisine, Corneille , Robert Charlebois, John Primer, Diunna Greenleaf, John Hammond, Linda ''Chocolate Thunder'' Rodney and the Prime Minister of the Blues Dutch Mason just to name a few and he has toured in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Ukraine, USA, Mexico and Eastern Canada. When asked why he plays both jazz and blues Mike replies: "I get bored doing just one type of music. I love jazz for its beautiful melodies, chords, and improvisation. I love blues for its energy, soul and milking its three-chord structure. I enjoy playing rock 'n roll too. But no matter what music I play it has to SWING".

Cardinal (vocals and guitar) and Jasmine Colette (upright bass/vocals), along with guests Darcy Phillips (piano, Hammond organ); Jerry Cook (tenor and baritone sax); Matt Pease (drums); Paul Pigat (guitar); Bonnie Northgraves (trumpet); and Señor Erik (tambourine). “To say A.W. and Jasmine are old souls is an understatement to say the least,” says co-producer and legendary guitarist Duke Robillard in the album’s liner notes. “They are poised for worldwide recognition in an amazing genre-bending ride through American blues and folk, gypsy jazz, Native American themes, jump blues, swing and more. These century-old traditions have been redefined and delivered in a new light here. They are astounding in their depth, groove and soul on this recording. Written, played, and recorded here in a heartfelt and natural old-school way for the world to hear, feel, dance, drink or be alone with. For me, working with them in the studio was inspiring and a re-confirmation of my own belief in the power of roots music. He has 11 CD releases now with his latest, Heavy Groove, but Billy Watson and His International Silver String Submarine Band are a local jamming blues fixture. He has played his harp and sung with virtually every blues player in town (and many others), while his band is a rotating cast of established blues combo aces. His new album, like many of his others, is “live in the studio” with songs that are Watson originals that form good launching points for harp and guitar solo breaks.

On hand for the Nathan James-produced project are James, Adrian Demain, and Junior Watson on guitar; drummers Alan West and Malachi Johnson; bassists John Bazz and Burt Newman; and Watson plays bongos, harp, and does the singing on 12 tracks that mix instrumentals in with Watson’s alternatively funky, growling, and quirky blues. At the end of the day, this is jam music and the payoff is in Watson’s harp playing, which is a melting pot of recent and contemporary bluesmen like Rick Estrin and Steve Guyger, and the interesting mix of guitar styles from the three top-shelf axe men on hand, who are all masters of the craft.

“Hey Hey Hey” is a catchy jump blues with a hopping bassline and clean, jazz-inspired lead guitar riffs beneath Watson’s lyrics about having a ball and getting along. The album lives up to its name, to an extent, with “Art Blakey Rip-Off,” an instrumental built around a lurching bass riff. At 3:28, it is the shortest track. These guys aren’t in a hurry and there is lots of room to take breaks. The band grinds things out on “Stop That Train,” with Watson’s vocal down and dirty as the song never changes out of its root key for two minutes, pounding away about his baby coming home and providing some truly nasty moments to attack with his harp licks.

The tracks and beats alternate between shuffles, funky toe tappers, and blues grinders. Watson’s established quirky streak occupies “Secret Agent Groove,” a leisurely instrumental highlight that focuses on a dance between his harp licks and tasty, exotic guitar fills that launch into a musical haze that includes tingling chimes and rattling percussion throughout. “Step Back Baby” and “I’m Going” are blues funk by the numbers, with nearly the same groove, but they still generate energy late in the program.

Billy Watson and His International Submarine Silver String Band can be counted on to lay down solid blues, and they do so again on Heavy Groove. ~Frank Kocher

Crystal Shawanda - Midnight Blues

08. That's Just The Woman In Me (4:22)
09. Hold Me (3:28)
10. Take A Little Walk With The Moon (3:22)

The album is loaded with the high-octane blend of blues, rock, and Americana that has become Shawanda’s calling card. Dewayne Strobel, her husband and frequent collaborator, produced and engineered in Nashville. The set is a mix of original songs and covers of the Howlin’ Wolf classic “Evil” and the Celine Dion hit “That’s Just The Woman In Me.” It’s a wonderful showcase for Shawanda’s raspy vocal tones, strong belt, and creative instincts. She’s one of the top vocal talents Canada has ever produced and Midnight Blues is going to win her scads of new fans.

Born in Wiikwemkoong First Nation, on Manitoulin Island, in Northern Ontario, Crystal was introduced to the blues and old-time country by her family. “I was also into other styles of music that led me to the blues,” she said, naming sounds ranging from Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog,” written by Big Mama Thornton, to R&B/pop star Monica’s “Misty Blue,” written by Dorothy Moore, as important parts of her development.

Shawanda began her professional career as a hit-making country singer before shifting into blues. She hit paydirt in her early 20s after signing a U.S. record deal with RCA Nashville. Her 2008 album Dawn of a New Day, featuring the single “You Can Let Go,” reached Number One on the Canadian Country Album chart and Number 16 on the Billboard Top Country Albums, the highest-ever charting album by a full-blooded Canadian First Nations country artist. She moved into the blues in 2014 with the release of her record The Whole World’s Got The Blues. Midnight Blues is her fifth album in the genre.

Crystal opens her record with her moody, mid-tempo title track “Midnight Blues.” Her gravelly vocal tone and expressive style immediately command attention, hypnotizing your ears with late-night, minor key blues goodness. The studio band behind her is supportive and tight, giving Shawanda all she needs to purge herself of the pain she’s feeling. It’s a subtle song but works as the first cut because of Shawanda’s street-level grit and hard emotions.

“What Kind Of Man Is This” picks up the pace and rocks out more. Shawanda gets to display her vocal power here in a more profound way and she dispels all doubts about her ability to sing this kind of music. Her presence on the mic will light up your listening room and make you wish you’d discovered her a long time ago.

The soul/gospel gem “How Bad Do You Want It” introduces us to the smooth side of Shawanda’s gift and it’s just as compelling as her roar. It’s built on a laid-back soul pocket and topped off by Crystal’s performance, some sweet backing vocals, and a handful of fine guitar work. This is the part of her voice that sold country records and Shawanda loses none of her impact by going for a silkier sound.

Howlin’ Wolf’s timeless standard “Evil” finds Crystal digging down into her slow blues self and delivering what could well be her strongest showing of the entire album. She articulates that lowdown, worried feeling of being done wrong extremely well, something everyone can relate to, and throws her entire being into expressing it. The Old Masters would be proud.

Other must-hear cuts on Midnight Blues include “Why Do I Love You,” “I Want My Soul Back,” and the piano-powered soul of “Hold Me.” Shawanda shines brilliantly on each of them and demonstrates that there’s nothing she can’t sing. Don’t sleep on this record or you’re going to miss out on something special. ~Mike O’Cull

Born Larry Williams in 1954, the eldest son of blues great McKinley Morganfield, otherwise known as Muddy Waters, Mud Morganfield (who has also gone by the name Muddy Waters Jr.), naturally grew up surrounded by music, and particularly the blues, and he's played music all of his life, starting with the drums his dad gave him as a child, then moving on to the bass guitar. Supporting himself as a truck driver, just like his father did when he was first starting out, Morganfield didn't seriously consider being a professional blues musician until after Waters' death in 1983, by which time Morganfield was already close to 30. Possessing a baritone voice very much like his father's, and blessed with a similar sense of vocal phrasing and a sense of how to command a stage, Morganfield made up for lost time, cutting his teeth in the soutside Chicago clubs where he was soon a popular draw on the blues club and festival circuit; he mixed both original songs and Muddy Waters classics into his live sets. A debut album, Fall Waters Fall, was self-released in 2008, followed by a proper first album, Son of a Seventh Son, in 2012 from Severn Records. ~Steve Leggett

The Go Graal Blues Band was a Portuguese blues rock group formed in 1975 that, contrary to what was usual at the time, sang only in English.
The Go Graal Blues Band makes its appearance in 1975, integrating João Allain (guitar), Artur Paes (bass), Zito (drums), Tony Sousa (guitar) and José Carlos Cordeiro (vocals) and defined themselves as a group that dedicated himself to playing and singing the blues. After several experiences, the formation stabilizes with Paulo Gonzo (vocals and harmonica), João Allain (lead guitar), Raúl Barrigas dos Anjos (drums), Augusto Mayer (harmonic), António Ferro (bass), João Esteves (guitar) and José Carlos Lamb (lead voice).
In 1979, they signed a contract with Imavox and released, later that year, Go Graal Blues Band, their first LP, in which the group totally assumed a posture dedicated to electric blues, notorious in themes such as “Baby, I Wanna…”, “The Fault Is Her Own” and “The Last One”. That year Tó Andrade joins as bassist. On the 22nd of September, at the invitation of José Nuno Martins, they perform the first concert with laser beams at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia. This concert was broadcast live by RTP 1 and is in the RTP archives.
In 1980 they released the single “They Send Me Away”, presenting a more rock sound, very close to the style of Dr. Feelgood. The presenter of the program Rock In Stock, Luís Filipe Barros, produces the single “Lay Down”, which reached the top of the Top in Rock In Stock.
In 1982, the band's second LP, "White Traffic", was released. Of the original line-up, only Paulo Gonzo and João Allain remain. The bass is in charge of Fernando Delaere and the drums by Hippo Birdie. This LP includes themes like “N'Roll”, “Lonely” and “Guetto Drunk”. The group's musical evolution is notorious and success is measured not so much by record sales, but by the number of shows.
Internal disagreements over the authorship of the themes lead to the departure of Delaere and Birdie who go to Roxigénio and new members are recruited. Mário Pereira (Márito) joins the drums and Henrique Leite is in charge of the bass. The Mini-LP “Blackmail” is released, where you can listen to blues/rock themes such as “Champagne All Night”, “Love Fashion” and “Midnight Killer”.
In 1984, the Máxi-Single Dirty Brown City was released with themes such as “Dirty Brown City”, “Fast Flirt” and “Wild Beat Blues”. That year, Tó Andrade returned to bass, at the invitation of João Allain.
In 1987, the band's last album was released, “So Down Train”, with a more mature sound but far from the success of other eras. The latest album by Go Graal brings us themes like “They Don't Give A Damn”, “A Little Bit” or “City Lights”.
After the release of this LP, Paulo Gonzo left the band to launch a solo career. He is replaced by João Melo, and the band consists of João Melo, João Allain, Tó Andrade, Leonel Cardoso (sax), Fernando Costa (keys) and Chico Cardoso (drums). After about six months, Mário Pereira returns to the drums and the 1st singer José Carlos Cordeiro.
Due to the commercial failure of the LP “So Down Train”, which was reflected in the decrease in the number of shows, the group took the decision to dissolve, leading, in 1989, to the extinction of one of the most outstanding blues/rock groups. in Portugal.
They had a career full of shows, including the first part of the show by The Shirts in Lagos, the 1st part of Jan Akkerman at the Dramatic de Cascais, the 1st part of the Blues Band at the Coliseu and a memorable concert at the Lisbon Coliseum as headliner.
Unfortunately, so far, none of the Go Graal Blues Band albums have been reissued on CD.

"Inspired by the early West Coast blues, we love to play Swing & Boogie, but with this album we're gonna drag you a bit further into the stinky swampy soils of the Mississippi.

For creating the ultimate fifties sound we recorded this album in the traditional way: with analog tube microphones and gear, all together in one room making use of overspill instead of avoiding it. We now proudly present the results of these sessions with our new album "Detonized" consisting of ten original "explosive" compositions by the band. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do and did recording it."

Detonics headlined many major international festivals and clubs, including Ribs & Blues, Culemborg Blues, Breda )azzand Moulin Blues (The Netherlands), Santa Maria Blues festival (Azores), Swing Wespelaar (Belgium), Zyfflich Blues festival (Germany), )azz am See (switzerland) and BB King's club in Memphis (usA).

Detonics are praised for their creative songs and powerful performance by expert juries: in 20L6 the band won the Dutch Blues Challenge and represented The Netherlands at the European Blues Challenge. In 2017 Detonics reached the semi- finals of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. One of the jury members commented: "The moment they started to play I got a smile on my face that didn't get off anymore".

Rory Gallagher sounds inspired throughout JInx, gamely leading new drummer Brendan O'Neill and keyboardist Bob Andrews through the blues-rock paces, even though the guitarist's personal fortunes were on a downslide from which they would never recover. "Big Guns" and "Bourbon," the album's opening selections find Rory in full fiery form, tossing out muscular guitar lines and fiery solos with descriptive lyrics catering to his infatuation with American gangsters. The album also features two of his best, and least known, songs in the spooky, paranoid title track, complete with simmering sax section, boiling tom-tom drums as well as his own stealthy harmonica, and "Easy Come Easy Go," a beautiful, bluesy ballad where Rory double tracks his acoustic and electric guitars. Gallagher's tough vocals take on a new emotional depth not previously heard, and are particularly poignant throughout. Diving into the blues, Lightnin' Slims' "Nothin' but the Devil," one of the two songs added for this reissue, is an acoustic solo showpiece revealing Gallagher's delta roots and substantial slide abilities. Louisiana Red's "Ride On Red, Ride On" is a crackling double-time burner with Rory charging through with an appropriately whisky-soaked approach and a shimmering electric slide solo. Another extra track, "Lonely Mile," a finished tune previously omitted due to the time restrictions of vinyl, is a worthy addition to Gallagher's mid-tempo grinding rocker catalog. Although not his best album, Jinx is a tough and confident release, and it's 2000 reappearance after being difficult to find for almost 20 years, especially in this pristine edition, is reason to rejoice for Rory Gallagher fans. ~Hal Horowitz

09. Hine Ma Tov Blues (Feat. Cantor Pavel Roytman) ( 6:44)
10. Penguins In The Opera House ( 3:46)

Featuring blues harmonica vs classical string quartet, with iconic voices, the ‘different voices’ are: Ernie Watts (2 x Grammy winning saxophonist), Frank Orrall (Poi Dog Pondering), Marcella Detroit (Shakespear’s Sister), Pavel Roytman (a Ukrainian Cantor) singing a Jewish chant for peace, Alligator Records’ blues star Toronzo Cannon, country blues singer Tracy Nelson (After the Fire is Gone with Willie Nelson), and bodacious diva Lynne Jordan.

The Chamber Blues ensemble members are: Jaime Gorgojo – violin (Madrid), Chihsuan Yang – violin (Taiwan), Rose Armbrust – viola, Jocelyn Butler-Shoulders – Cello, and Kalyan “Johnny Bongo” Pathak – Tabla (India).

Siegel’s MORE Different Voices is more different than anything you might imagine and for more different reasons than what you might conjure. Always pushing boundaries, Siegel’s Chamber Blues experiment continues the compositional interweaving of blues and classical in the form of his blues sonata and concerto adventures. But again, he reaches across the musical spectrum to explore the joyful diversity of other genres.

“My memory is a thing of the past / my future is an unopened present.” This rolling and reverberating title of Corky Siegel’s ‘memoirs in progress’ is a true reflection of a long, unusual and extraordinary career still going full esteem ahead. As the Lone Ranger of the original ground-cracking genre known as Chamber Blues, Siegel has been bringing the diverse/opposing forces of both blues and classical music together, and blues and classical fans, shoulder to shoulder, for over 55 years, joyfully obliterating musical categorization and cultural boundaries in the process.

1965: Corky Siegel stumbles unknowingly into the hangout of the Chicago blues masters and before he can say “one four five” (classical 12-bar blues changes) he and his guitar partner Jim Schwall are hired to front the house band every Thursday night and host the very blues deities he’s been idolizing on his hallowed recordings, including Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Little Walter. From under the wings of these music mentors Siegel and Schwall formed the Siegel-Schwall Band and within a year they were whisked up for another residency at Big Johns (known as ground zero of the American blues rock explosion).

And then it happened.

A blues player and a classical conductor walk into a bar.

From Siegel’s historic performances as blues harmonica and piano soloist with major orchestras, beginning with his 1968 debut with the Chicago Symphony, he continued to bring blues and classical audiences together collaborating with the New York Philharmonic, Boston, Philadelphia, Suisse Romande, NHK Japan, San Francisco symphonies (38 orchestras and counting), including a Great Performances on PBS and two historic “American Classic” albums on Deutsche Grammophon. Siegel did this all while road-tripping with his blues band (RCA, Vanguard and Alligator recording artists) Siegel-Schwall, his solo singer-songwriter performances, and his Chamber Blues ensemble, while composing works that weave blues and classical flavors together taking everyone places they’ve never been before.

In 2017 Siegel launched his 6th blues/classical album, Different Voices, and with so much critical acclaim and so many still unrecorded centerpiece favorites in their regular repertoire of Corky originals, it was a springboard for MORE.

Not to be outdone by his own prolific creative moments including all his more than 150 video productions during the Damnpandic, Siegel has also just released, or is about to release, for the first time digitally; Chamber Blues – Complementary Colors (from 2001), Solo Flight (Siegel’s singer/songwriter album 1975-1980) and a brand new solo album and CD; Somethin’ Wrong with three other albums on the back burner.

The ultra-fast piano playing of the early-twentieth century has continued to infuse the music of pianist, Errol Dixon. Inspired by New Orleans pianist Jelly Roll Morton (1890-1941), Dixon's repertoire combines boogie-woogie, gospel, swing, soul and piano blues.

Born in Jamaica, Dixon moved to New York with his parents, at the age of twelve. The blues and jazz emanating out of the clubs of Harlem captivated his interest.

Launching his professional career after moving to London, in the mid-1950s, Dixon scored a number one hit with his debut single, "Midnight Train", in 1960. Dixon's resume includes collaborations with Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, B.B. King and Muddy Waters. ~Craig Harris

Acclaimed Blues Rock guitarist Anthony Gomes will release his 13th studio album entitled, "High Voltage Blues" on Friday September 23, 2022 via Rat Pak Records. Coming off the heels of his highly successful 2020 #1 Billboard charting release, "Containment Blues", High Voltage Blues is a compilation album that showcases three new studio tracks, along with eleven re-recorded fan favorites and features guest appearances by legendary bassist Billy Sheehan, KoRn drummer Ray Luzier, renown vocalist Bekka Bramlett and The Voice™ contestant Wendy Moten. "We had a lot of fun rocking these songs up" says Anthony. "As an artist, it was great to circle back to some of my past work and look at it from a different perspective. Billy and Ray really pushed the way I play guitar and they added a whole new element, with a little insanity", he laughs. When people ask me what I sound like I tell them, "If B.B. King was in AC/DC, that's what I feel we try and capture. That's High Voltage Blues in a nutshell." From the charging rhythms of album opener "Painted Horse" to the heart wrenching classic "Darkest Before The Dawn", it is clear that Anthony's trademark blues guitar playing lays the bedrock for his latest solo offering. Produced by Peter Carson and mixed by Chris Collier, High Voltage Blues delivers all the power and punch that one would expect from this high-level blues artist.

DUWAYNE BURNSIDE’s music is primal as an alligator’s backbone—as raw, earthy, and fertile as the kudzu-covered terrain of the North Mississippi hills, where his family has defined the sound of the region’s blues for more than a half-century. And Duwayne’s new album for Dolceola Records, Acoustic Burnside, was recorded on the very soil where the Burnsides have planted their deep musical roots and brims with unvarnished authenticity and character.

When Duwayne—the son of legendary bluesman R.L. Burnside—sings and plays his guitar in Acoustic Burnside’s 12 songs, it’s as much an act of wizardry as it is musicianship. His cresting and falling voice and driving tones of his acoustic six-string part the clouds of time, transporting those lucky enough to hear him when the blues was young and life was so uncluttered that the sound of an unplugged guitar could travel for miles over the hills, enticing neighbors for a night of moonshine-soaked revelry.

That history comes to life in these performances, recorded around Duwayne’s home in Holly Springs, Mississippi, from June 2018 and September 2019.

Robert Hill & Joanne Lediger - Revelation

10. Preacher's Blues (2:16)
11. Jesus On The Mainline (3:59)

Many of the pioneering recording artists of the 1920’s and 30’s such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Blind Blake, and Willie Johnson were itinerant American blues and gospel singer/songwriters, guitarists, and evangelists. Arkansas born Robert Hill drew inspiration from them for his award-winning original song, “Preacher’s Blues” sung by his partner Joanne Lediger on their new release, Revelation, a collection of eleven new tracks of traditional Gospel Blues, which includes four new originals penned by Hill. Joining the duo, who have been performing together for the past 15 years, are Hill’s daughter, Paulina, on vocals, Frank Pagano on drums and percussion, Steve Gelfand on bass, with Robert Hill on vocals, keys, harmonica, and his award-winning slide guitar. It has often been said ” It's a fine line between Saturday night and Sunday morning,” and this album strives to prove that axiom self-evident.

The first recording of the song “John The Revelator” was by the blues singer Blind Willie Johnson in 1930. From the opening, tension-building riff of a National guitar, Hill and company immediately set the stage for the darkly atmospheric and driving blues rock that soon thunders in. Lediger’s commanding, plaintive vocal perfectly conveys the story, aided by dueling slide guitar and blues harp. “Run On” is a straight-ahead boogie which smokes from the first note to the last, locked in by the airtight rhythm section of Pagano and Gelfand, Hill’s incendiary slide work, and an irresistible arrangement. Lediger’s voice soars on this, as she belts out warnings to those who run afoul of the Lord. Hill’s reworking of the Blind Willie Johnson song, “The Soul Of A Man,” may be the deepest and most soulful cut on the album, giving the depression-era treatise a modern, ghostly soundscape, heavy rhythm, and some intense interplay between his guitar and harmonica. Also, perhaps the most compelling arrangement on the album. Stepping aside from the traditional tunes, the band turns Tom Waits’ “Way Down In The Hole,” into a hip-bouncing blues rhumba, aided by the sultry lead vocals of Hill’s daughter, Paulina.

The first of four originals penned by Hill, “Jesus By The Riverside,” has an infectious chorus and deep roots in country blues, with an extended outgoing slide solo that brings Americana flavors into the mix. It’s follow-up, “Pay One Way Or Another,” is set to a grinding blues groove, with Lediger belting out a humorous indictment of the hypocrisy of modern religious zealots. “It's Nobody's Fault But Mine" is one of Blind Willie Johnson's most interpreted songs, which Hill and Co. deliver as a melancholy expression of spiritual struggle, setting it on the back porch v. the pulpit. Hill dishes out advice to not pay heed to temptation on his original Chicago shuffle, “A Devil’s Fool.” Another classic open to interpretation is the Old Testament story of “Samson And Delilah,” told here by Paulina Hill over a strutting, honkytonk shuffle. Lediger seeks counsel from her pastor, who gives a strong, but humorous rebuke on the Hill Country infused, “Preacher’s Blues.”

The earliest known recording of “Jesus On The Mainline” was Alan Lomax's recording of Mississippi Fred McDowell in the early 1950s. Here, Hill, his daughter, and Lediger use the traditional Baptist hymn as the final altar call for Revelation - an uplifting finale to an album which is a refreshingly unique and contemporary take on a traditional genre.
