This British blues-rock group is remembered mostly for their keyboard player, Christine Perfect, who would join Fleetwood Mac after marrying John McVie and changing her last name. Although they were one of the more pedestrian acts of the British blues boom, Chicken Shack was quite popular for a time in the late '60s, placing two albums in the British Top 20. The frontperson of Chicken was not Perfect/McVie, but guitarist Stan Webb, who would excite British audiences by entering the crowds at performances, courtesy of his 100-meter-long guitar lead. They were signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label, a British blues pillar that had its biggest success with early Fleetwood Mac.

Chicken Shack was actually not far behind Mac in popularity in the late '60s, purveying a more traditional brand of Chicago blues, heavily influenced by Freddie King. Although Webb took most of the songwriting and vocal duties, Christine Perfect also chipped in with occasional compositions and lead singing. In fact, she sang lead on their only British Top 20 single, "I'd Rather Go Blind" (1969). But around that time, she quit the music business to marry John McVie and become a housewife, although, as the world knows, that didn't last too long. Chicken Shack never recovered from Christine's loss, commercially or musically. Stan Webb kept Chicken Shack going, with a revolving door of other musicians, all the way into the 1980s, though he briefly disbanded the group to join Savoy Brown for a while in the mid-'70s. ~Richie Unterberger

This Castle package features the best of Chicken Shack's Deram years, when they kept some of the trademark blues expression that made them somewhat popular in the British blues scene of the 1960s, while getting decidedly heavier to the point of being a power metal trio. The entire Imagination Lady album is presented here, along with eight of the 14 cuts from Unlucky Boy. As a bonus, there is a second disc that contains Chicken Shack's unreleased Goodbye album, which was cut live.

Those who worshiped the early band - and there are people who did since they were in their way as credible as the Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer-led Fleetwood Mac (and even had Christine Perfect as a member for a time before she left and married the Mac's bassist, John McVie) - will, as those of the day did, find this material tedious and plodding. However, those who have found solace in the hard rock of the early '70s will find this material not only gratifying but surprising in its way, given the mastery of the material and the big, loud, and raw mixes. Recommended. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

The sky was crying when Gary Moore passed away on 6th February 2011. From Thin Lizzy to Colosseum II, together with his solo hits ‘Parisienne Walkways’ and ‘Out In The Fields’, Gary influenced a whole generation of guitar players and guitar playing.

The bass player/producer Bob Daisley had played with Gary since the 1980's, and is known for suggesting to Gary that he should make a blues album - the rest is history, ‘Still Got The Blues’ was an immense hit, followed by a series of classic modern blues albums. Bob, also known for his contributions to Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne, was the driving force behind “Moore Blues For Gary”.

“In my opinion, Gary was one of the best guitarists who ever lived”, says Bob Daisley. “It was an honour for me to have worked with him and to have known him so well. When Gary passed away in 2011 the world lost one of the all-time greats. I don’t think that enough was said or done at the time to acknowledge the loss of such a great player so I took it upon myself to pay personal tribute to the man and record some new versions of his music, mostly from his blues catalogue.

I asked many members of the Gary Moore family tree, and some other great players, to contribute to the project. The response was not only encouraging, but very moving. It seems that the name Gary Moore is also synonymous with the words ‘respect’, ‘honour’ and ‘greatness’. I didn’t set out to recreate anything that Gary had done, or to compete in any way, these arrangements and performances represent a ‘hats off’ to Gary and nothing more. Long live the memory of Robert William Gary Moore. Yes, he was another ‘Bob’ - something that I wasn’t aware of for all of those years that I worked with him. I feel such gratitude towards the people who contributed to this album and I’m honoured to have worked with them all.”

John Sykes (ex-Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake) makes a triumphant return after a long absence with an uber-emotional rendition of ‘Still Got The Blues’, with the soulful vocals by Daniel Bowes (Thunder) complementing each other.

‘Parisienne Walkways’ is played by Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs) and Ricky Warwick (Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, The Almighty), with the unlikely pair resulting in a miraculous chemistry.

Gary's friends are here - his rocking keyboard / guitar / vocal sidekick Neil Carter sings ‘Empty Rooms’, which he co-wrote with Gary. Don Airey (Deep Purple, Rainbow) and Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) had joined forces with Gary on numerous occasions, together with Eric Singer (Kiss) and Darrin Mooney (Primal Scream). Brush Shiels, the leader of Gary's first professional band Skid Row, also makes an appearance.

Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio), Steve Lukather (Toto), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow), Jeff Watson (Night Ranger), Damon Johnson (Black Star Riders, Alice Cooper) and Stan Webb (Chicken Shack) also unsparingly pour all their emotions to show their appreciation to Gary.

Gary's sons Jack and Gus are also involved, playing guitar and singing on ‘This One's For You’, showing that the ‘Blood Of Emeralds’ still runs their veins.

During his blues days, Gary made two albums to thank the guitarists that made him who he was: “Blues For Greeny” for Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, and “Blues For Jimi” for Jimi Hendrix. Now this is his turn to be rewarded with an album full of love and respect. We still got the blues for you.

Stan Webb was at the heart of the British Blues Boom as he led his band Chicken Shack around the Blues club circuit in the late 60s. Londoner Stan played guitar in skiffle groups before forming his own band in 1965, playing a series of residencies in Hamburg, Germany over the next couple of years. When the band signed for the new Blue Horizon label in 1967, they were called Chicken Shack and consisted of Stan on guitar, Christine Perfect (later McVie) on piano, drummer Dave Bidwell, and bassist Andy Sylvester, who later played with Foghat.

In 1968, they released their album ’40 Blue Fingers, Freshly Packed and Ready to Serve’, and opened a big tour for labelmates Fleetwood Mac. Their most popular number was a version of ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, the Etta James standard, sung by Christine Perfect. Stan himself had a true Blues sensibility, and an excellent guitar technique, closely modeled on Freddie King. Five years of constant touring and recording followed, and the pressures of this crazy lifestyle led to many changes in personnel, including Christine Perfect switching to Fleetwood Mac.

In 1974, Stan dissolved Chicken Shack and joined another British Blues band, Savoy Brown, but returned a year later with ‘Stan Webb’s Chicken Shack’. This band, with an ever changing roster of side-men, has continued to support Stan up to the present, playing regularly in the UK and touring Europe. After almost 50 years on the road, Stan still carries the torch for British Blues.

Stan Webb With Chicken Shack - Reflections (2-Disc Set)

Webb was born in Fulham, South West London. Initially playing in skiffle bands, Webb formed the first version of the blues band Chicken Shack with bassist Andy Silvester in 1965. The band played in Hamburg, Germany over the next couple of years.[1] They signed to the Blue Horizon record label in 1967, where their label mates were the fledgling Fleetwood Mac. The group was then composed of Webb, Christine Perfect, drummer Dave Bidwell, and bassist Andy Silvester. Bidwell and Silvester would later become the rhythm section of the British blues ensemble, Savoy Brown. Webb also joined Savoy Brown for their album Boogie Brothers. Perfect later joined Fleetwood Mac becoming Christine McVie after her marriage to the band's bassist, John McVie.

Chicken Shack enjoyed their heyday in the mid to late 1960s, when R&B was popular in England. Chicken Shack's line-up has evolved over the years, with Webb being the only constant. Their music was traditional in make-up, and the group covered a variety of American blues standards, as well as composing their own songs.

Chicken Shack are a British blues band, founded in the mid-1960s by Stan Webb (guitar and vocals), Andy Silvester (bass guitar), and Alan Morley (drums), who were later joined by Christine Perfect (vocals and keyboards) in 1968.

The band were formed in April 1965, naming themselves after Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack" album. Chicken shacks (chicken restaurants) had also by then frequently been mentioned in blues and rhythm and blues songs, as in Amos Milburn's hit, "Chicken Shack Boogie". Their first concert was at the 1967 National Blues and Jazz Festival at Windsor and they were signed by the Blue Horizon record label in the same year.

Chicken Shack enjoyed modest commercial success, with Christine Perfect being voted Best Female Vocalist in the Melody Maker polls, two years running.

Perfect left the band in 1969 when she married John McVie of Fleetwood Mac. Pianist Paul Raymond, bassist Andy Silvester, and drummer Dave Bidwell all left in 1971 to join Savoy Brown. In 1977 Silvester joined Los Angeles based ensemble, Wha-Koo. Webb was also recruited for Savoy Brown in the mid-1970s, and recorded the album Boogie Brothers with them.

Chicken Shack evolved from a Stourbridge, UK based band called Sounds Of Blue who were performing in the West Midlands area by early 1964. The original members included singer and pianist Christine Perfect, bass guitarist Andy Sylvester, guitarist Stan Webb, and saxophonist Chris Wood. Following a host of drummers, Dave Bidwell became their permanent one in 1966/67. While touring the UK in 1967, opening for Fleetwood Mac, Christine met John McVie, whom she later married. She eventually left and replaced Peter Green in Fleetwood Mac. She was replaced by Paul Raymond.

In 1970 Stan Webb had a falling-out with Mike Vernon which resulted in the group being dropped by their record label. There were also disagreements within the group which resulted in the departure of Dave Bidwell and Paul Raymond who both left to join the famous London blues outfit Savoy Brown. Undaunted, Stan Webb continued with a new line-up which included bass guitarist John Glassock from Jethro Tull and Paul Hancox on drums but by the mid 1970's and after various other personnel changes, Chicken Shack finally disbanded.

Originally released in 1970, this is a 2004 reissue with 13 bonus tracks including single A-sides, B-sides and 9 BBC Sessions On Air 1968-1970.

If one can overlook Stan Webb's hyperventilating vocal excesses (which ain't easy), this is a promising debut, especially noteworthy for Webb's Freddie King-inspired guitar sting and Christine Perfect's understated vocals (only two, unfortunately compared to Webb's six). Webb does justice to his mentor with two instrumentals, King's "San-Ho-Zay" and his own "Webbed Feet," and Perfect proves the ideal counterpart -- one of the few pianists paying homage to King's longtime collaborator Sonny Thompson. Nice spare sound, typical of Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label. /Dan Forte, AllMusic

Chicken Shack were, like Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown, Climax Blues Band and others, one of the early British blues bands. Formed in 1965, they had a long residency at Hamburg's famed Star Club.

The original members included guitarist/vocalist Stan "The Man" Webb, and vocalist Christine Perfect The band's debut album, ''Forty Blue Fingers", also available on Talking Elephant, was released in 1968, and for the next couple of years, they were, together with Fleetwood Mac, at the forefront of the British blues boom. They released a further three albums, ''O.K.Ken", ''100 Ton Chicken" and ''Accept" for Blue Horizon before moving over to Deram in 1972.

Stan (The Man) Webb went on to release s "That's The Way We Are", during the late seventies under the heading of Stan Webb's Chicken Shack. This is the first time on CD for this album and has been a rarity for some time.

Chicken Shack - The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions (3 CD)

Formed and led by guitarist/vocalist Stan Webb, Chicken Shack were one of the first bands to be signed to the Blue Horizon label in the mid-'60s. As of this compilation's release in 2006, Webb was still fronting a version of the group. While never attaining any success in the States, Chicken Shack were well known in the U.K., with fleeting success second only to John Mayall and labelmates Fleetwood Mac. Webb's Freddie King-styled guitar and vocalist/pianist Christine Perfect's (later McVie) singing were the major draws to this second-tier British blues band, but neither were strong enough to carry the group's success to the U.S. market.

This three-disc set collects the band's entire output for the imprint from 1967-1969 and includes alternate takes, singles, and B-sides (56 tracks in all), and also features terrific liner notes by label head/producer Mike Vernon. Perfect stayed for two of four releases for the label, exiting before the recording of 1969's 100 Ton Chicken. Hence she appears on about half of this disc, leaving after the U.K. hit single "I'd Rather Go Blind." Webb's often wobbly but amiable singing is an acquired taste, so Perfect's husky, smooth vocals and classy blues piano runs were major contributions to the band, and strong points they never adequately replaced.

Occasional use of horns distinguished Chicken Shack from both Mac and Savoy Brown, another band very much in the Shack style and one with whom they swapped members. These three discs include the contents of four albums and assorted singles, with much of this music hard to obtain. The remastering is excellent, too, and it's safe to say that Chicken Shack have never sounded better. But the band wasn't strong or innovative enough to maintain interest over these four albums, making this all-inclusive set essential only for fans, collectors, and those looking to research the roots of Christine Perfect's pre-Fleetwood Mac sultry blues-tinged pop. Everyone else can make due with 2004's The Very Best of Chicken Shack, a single disc that cherry-picks the better tunes from the Blue Horizon era. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Chicken Shack was a British blues group from the sixties, Front man and guitarist was Stan Webb born in London in 1946. The group played blues on the Blue Horizon label in a similar style to the early Fleetwood Mac. Singer Christine Perfect (Christine McVie) left after marrying John McVie (bassist) with Fleetwood Mac. Christine later joined Fleetwood Mac in their second reincarnation. Chicken Shack continued to record through the seventies with various band members and occasional change of name to Stan Webb’s Chicken Shack. Stan Webb recorded a solo album in 2001 and continues to tour and play blues.

Stan Webb/Chicken Shack - Going Up, Going Down: The Anthology 1968-2001 (2-Disc Set)

Going Up, Going Down is a double-disc set on the Castle label focusing on Chicken Shack singer and guitarist Stan Webb. The first disc captures the early days of his British electric blues band when the lineup included future Fleetwood Mac keyboardist Christine Perfect (pre-McVie). Their earliest repertoire, made up of electric blues cover versions, is reflected through both studio recordings and various live gigs, with fundamentally decent takes of "Everyday I Have the Blues," "Tell Me," "San Ho Zay," "I'm Tore Down," "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "He Knows the Rules."

The second disc is a bit more interesting as the band progresses into a harder and louder guitar-driven unit, utilizing Webb's original songs, which have more in common with Paul Rodgers and Free than the previous incarnations did with classic electric blues. Unfortunately, the two live tracks are the weakest on the second disc; "Back Door Man" gets bogged down with pseudo-Hendrix wah-wah pedal hysterics, and the second reading of "Tell Me" is perfunctory. At 36 tracks, Going Up, Going Down may be too much for the novice, but the collector will certainly find this of interest. ~Al Campbell

Webb was born in Fulham, South West London. Playing firstly in skiffle bands, Webb, together with bassist Andy Silvester, formed the first version of the blues band, Chicken Shack in 1965. The band played in Hamburg, Germany over the next couple of years, as Webb perfected his playing techniques. They signed to the Blue Horizon record label in 1967, where their label mates were the fledgling Fleetwood Mac. The group was then composed of Webb, Christine Perfect, drummer Dave Bidwell, and bassist Andy Silvester. (Bidwell and Silvester would later become the rhythm section of the British blues ensemble, Savoy Brown. Webb also joined Savoy Brown, recording the album Boogie Brothers). Chicken Shack enjoyed their heyday in the mid to late 1960s, when R&B was a popular music form in England. Their music was traditional in make-up, and the group covered a variety of American blues standards, as well as composing several home-spun tunes. Their repertoire included, arguably, their most played track - "I'd Rather Go Blind". This song was originally recorded by Etta James, written by Ellington Jordan and Billy Foster, and became a modern day blues classic.

Chicken Shack are probably most remembered for including Perfect on keyboards and vocals in their line-up. She rose to far greater fame when she later joined Fleetwood Mac becoming Christine McVie after her marriage to the band's bassist, John McVie.

Chicken Shack's line-up has evolved and changed considerably over the years with Webb being the only constant factor. In 2001, Webb released his first solo album for over eight years when Webb appeared on the Indigo Records label.

“Stan’s Blues” was recorded live during the summer of 2004, when Chicken Shack enchanted a packed audience at a venue in Lyme Regis, in the south of England, performing some of their hits and live favourites.

Early 1965 Stan Webb formed the first incarnation of Chicken Shack, naming his band after Jimmy Smith's “Back at the Chicken Shack”. In 1967 pianist player Christine Perfect joined them and they recorded their first album for Mike Vernon’s Blue Horizon label. Initially Chicken Shack were heavily influenced by Freddie King, and played a more traditional brand of Chicago Blues, than some of their British peers. After the first two albums, Christine Perfect left in August 1969 to be married to Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie; ironically just as Chicken Shack achieved chart success with the single 'I'd Rather Go Blind'. From 1977 onwards Stan Webb has revived the Chicken Shack name on a number of occasions, with the rotating membership over the next 30 years including some of the cream of the crop of British Blues musicians. The band has remained extremely popular as a live attraction, also recording (mostly live albums) regularly.
