Chicago Bob played the harmonica and sang for several decades before releasing some solo recordings late in his career. Born Bob Nelson on July 4, 1944, in Bogalusa, LA, he frequently sang in local churches as a boy and began working the New Orleans bar circuit as a teen during the late '50s. In 1959, he moved to Gary, IN, and toured with Earl Hooker. A bit later, in the early '60s, he began working as a sideman throughout the Chicago area, performing with such artists as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. During his stay in Chicago, the vocalist formed the Chicago Bob Blues Band and performed locally. He moved to Boston, MA, in the late '60s, when he worked outside the music industry for some time. He returned to music in the early '70s, performing alongside John Lee Hooker and Johnny Shines.

In later years, Chicago Bob worked primarily with two bands - the Heartfixers and the Shadows - but continued to perform both on his own and with others. Though his releases appeared sporadically over the years, he continued recording into the '90s. /Biography by Jason Birchmeier, AllMusic

Atlanta-based singer/harmonica man Chicago Bob originally released this album in 1987, backed by the Shadows, the house band at the popular Blind Willie's blues club. This was also Bob's first album after leaving the Heartfixers, which also featured guitarist Tinsley Ellis. Bob (real name Robert Lee Nelson) shows a fine flair for songwriting on "Call My Landlady," "Your Time to Choose," "Stop What You're Doing" and "Bogalusa Boogie," injecting verses that are a cut above your standard blues couplets and show a sharp eye for imagery.

Bob also peppers the presentation with solid versions of J.B. Lenoir's "Mama Talk to Your Daughter," Jimmy Rogers' "In My Bed All Alone" and "Sloppy Drunk," Lazy Lester's "If You've Think I've Lost You," Jimmy Reed's "Little Rain," Little Walter's "Just a Feeling" and the title track. Of special interest is the soul-inflected "You Belong to Me" (not originally issued), a tune that Bob learned from Magic Sam but one that remained unrecorded until this session. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

Personnel: Chicago Bob (vocals, harmonica); J.T. Speed (guitar); El Rod (bass); Bob Page (piano, organ); Bob Rice (drums).

Robert Lee "Chicago Bob" Nelson was born July 4, 1944 in Bogalusa, Louisiana. At age 8, Bob began playing harmonica and in his teens, Bob was tutored on harmonica by family and friends including blues legends Slim Harpo and Lazy Lester. As a child, Bob spent his summers at an aunt's house in Chicago and eventually moved there in the early 1960's. Chicago is where he met and performed with Howlin' Wolf, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Muddy Waters. In fact, Muddy gave Bob his nickname "Chicago Bob." Bob would later perform with Muddy Waters at the Newport Folk Festival.

Over the years, Chicago Bob toured with Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson, Tinsley Ellis and was in John Lee Hooker's touring band for the last years of Hookers life. His amalgam of Louisiana Swamp and Windy City Blues creates a matchless sound that is full of the driving energy of both genres and is truly all his own. Chicago Bob Nelson performs blues the way it was meant to be - authentically and from the heart.
