A protege of the legendary T-Bone Walker, electric bluesman Roy Gaines was born in Waskom, Texas, in 1937; the product of a musical family - his older brother Grady later went on to play saxophone in Little Richard's famed backing band the Upsetters - he initially played the piano in emulation of Nat King Cole, but as a teen moved to the guitar. A huge admirer of Walker's work, at 14 Gaines met his hero at a local performance, and was even invited to back Walker onstage; dubbed "T-Bone Jr." thereafter, he regularly played clubs throughout the Houston area before relocating to Los Angeles two years later.

There Gaines was tapped to join Roy Milton's band, followed by a stint in support of Chuck Willis; additionally, he and Walker occasionally joined forces in the years leading to the latter's 1975 death. Long a sought-after sideman, Gaines recorded infrequently as a headliner, finally releasing an LP, Gaineling, in 1982; other albums include 1996's Lucille Work for Me, 1999's I Got the T-Bone Walker Blues and 2000's New Frontier Lover. /Biography by Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Album review for the original album "Live at Bill Graham's Fillmore West" (1969): This session from early 1969 featured Nick Gravenites, Mark Naftalin, John Kahn, and Snooky Flowers (among others), with cameos from Taj Mahal and Jesse Ed Davis, but it's clear from the opening notes who the real star is. Over the years, Michael Bloomfield's titanic solos on "Blues on a Westside" have dwarfed the rest of the album in many listeners' memories, but truthfully, his playing just burns across every track. More of Bloomfield's great guitar work from these shows is on Nick Gravenites' My Labors on Columbia. /Cary Wolfson, AllMusic

A perfect single-disc anthology of a band with what seemed like unlimited potential, but in reality limited output and few quality studio recordings that accurately reflected its combined musicianship. Like its musical cousins, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Electric Flag was one of the first bands to combine rock with big-band jazz swagger. This concept and the fact that Electric Flag contained Michael Bloomfield on electric guitar was reason enough for the band to be one of the most anticipated aggregations of the era. Yet many of the recordings show off the band's limitations like a sore thumb.

A certain over-baked production and arrangement feel permeates many of the fine songs from the band's debut (A Long Time Comin', included in its entirety), such as " Groovin' Is Easy" and "She Should Have Just," rendering it somewhat top-heavy. Yet, despite these moments of excess, the band could also perform modern blues-rock like no other and, for these tracks alone, Old Glory is worth purchasing. "Texas" and "Goin' Down Slow" (an outtake from the first album sessions) combine the group's real strengths with a supple energy that is positively beguiling. Between Buddy Miles' drumming and vocals, Bloomfield's unparalleled skill on electric guitar, Barry Goldberg's keyboards, and Nick Gravenites' songwriting and vocals lay true magic.

The fact that these moments are few and far between can make the disc a bit frustrating but, when the listener gets into cuts such as the aforementioned "Texas" and "You Don't Realize," it's well worth the wait. The five songs from the post-Bloomfield version of the group are nearly disposable, but a pair of earlier, live cuts from the band's debut at the Monterey Pop Festival (with Bloomfield) save the end of the collection. Although Electric Flag was troubled, chaotic, and disorganized, Old Glory proves that the band was important and had positively sterling moments, despite its foibles. /Matthew Greenwald, AllMusic

This set is blues music that’s a few steps ahead of the old curve. A gnarling, fuzztone-drenched blaring opening tune attacks like hornets. It’s not Canned Heat or the Butterfield Blues Band but this Eric has a marvelous blues voice. This opener reminds me of the excursions made by the late Alvin Lee who often added a little electronic splash to his dynamic rock vocals (“Standing At the Station”). Here, Johanson weaves so many nice guitar tones throughout his fretwork that the guitar playing alone makes each tune interesting. Though his voice is perfectly suited to these indelible atmospherics the title track finds Eric with his God-given voice. No knob tweaking. This one’s a little swampier & laid down in a genre as old as the Delta. This is the Louisiana native’s 12-track expressive & raw collection. He admits he’s not wholly blues influenced & doesn’t see the lines between genres on The Deep And The Dirty. Eric negotiates his own fully fueled showcase with mood-inspiring tunes.

Produced by Jesse Dayton the pristine-sounding CD doesn’t feature blues playing by the book but explores some keenly dramatic blues performances (“Beyond the Sky,” “Stepping Stone”) without getting caught up in the barbed wire cliches of blues. “Undertow,” a cut that explodes with solid drums is fairly typical stuff. But the energy exuded is superb. A line like “How far do you wanna go…” really drives the seductive sound. The guitar runs are fairly common but the cleanliness of Eric’s playing which meanders here & there into Alvin Lee & vintage Ted Nugent’s (“Marriage On the Rocks” suite) territory is electrifying.

It doesn’t have the torque of the late Roy Buchanan or the sparks of the late Stevie Ray Vaughn, but sometimes that’s not what’s required. Eric cooks roadhouse hot on a low flame & still gets the pot to boil. The success of this is that Eric (lead guitars/vocals) varies his sound & approach enough to keep the set consistently interesting. There’s a snarl to his guitar — sets it apart from the average saloon bar blues band hero. Eric avoids the basic menu of blues. He adds the necessary spices & never stagnates. The majority of the song titles are a little elementary but that comes with the territory. Many newer musicians play like virtuosos but when it comes to lyrics or song titles they’re raccoons caught in headlights.

“Elysian Fields,” is sung again in a vivid Alvin Lee rock voice. Evocative & fascinating. Sometimes summoning ghosts is good. The blues contained herein have character & uh, lots of ghosts. Good ghosts. /John Apice, Americana Highways

While some guitarists may choose to sing because they want to, others sing because they need to. Roy Gaines, a prolific songwriter and hotshot Texas guitar slinger, is in the latter category. On New Frontier Lover, he wails with gospel abandon on impassioned tracks like “The World’s Biggest Fool” and “You Can’t Make Nobody Love You.” He shows an earthy sense of humor on tunes like “Hind Ends & Elbows” and “Roll Your Own Biscuit” and struts his fretboard flash on the instrumental “Roy’s Theme.”

Already in his 60s, Roy is overdue to receive the kind of accolades older, tenor-sax-honking brother Grady Gaines receives. This percolating set, his fifth album as a leader, should help to bring him some acclaim in blues circles. /Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

The second effort of the dynamic duo formed by Stefano Tavernese and Armando Serafini was released on April 20th by Bloos Records with a new selection of songs and a generous dose of the groovin' blues that represents their signature style. The album continues in the same spirit as in The Heart, the Healer & the Holy Groove through a repertoire focused even more on the variegated world of the blues, a universal language able of interpreting the most varied aspects of the human soul. Six original songs and four covers that bear witness to the growth of this band, endowed with a rhythmic and emotional load emphasized by the three songs recorded live on stage.

For once the band entered the studio as a trio, enriching the sound created by Stefano Tavernese's guitars, violin and voice on the original percussions of Armando Serafini with the electric bass of Lucio Villani, recording together in the same room to capture the immediacy and energy of a real live session. “The lyrics of the songs frequently contain autobiographical images, often real photographs of a specific mood that has characterized significant moments in my life. Every time we get on stage we try to convey something real to the audience through lyrics and music” says Stefano Tavernese.

The album gets its start as the mandolin hints briefly at the roots of "Cluck Old Hen", a well known traditional Old Time tune from the USA, before the electric guitar and the whole band turn it all into a gritty rock-funk. "Mad Men" is an intriguing marching-blues where slide guitar intertwines its phrasing with violin on a hypnotic base enriched by the voices of Mario Donatone and his World Spirit Orchestra, the same characters who - beside Stefano and Armando - are featured in the evocative homonymous video. Introducing "Almost Like the Blues", another proof of the genius of Leonard Cohen, is the crackling of the needle on the vinyl, and the song is a long time favorite in River Blonde’s setlist.

The pounding beat of "Morning Light Blues" takes us back to the the 50s and rock'n'roll early days, while the lyrics in the final verse take their cue from the fathers of the blues to create a new picture where light is a hope of liberation. The intense "Shine On" is one of the most emotional songs in the album and its dreamy atmosphere fits perfectly with Stefano's passionate vocals. "If You Are a Rock" is instead a tight rocker marked by an enthralling groove; electric guitar and bass articulate together a powerful riff alternating moments of loose improvisation. Finally, the delicate "If" is an acoustic gem for acoustic guitar and vocals that concludes the selection of songs recorded in the studio. The following live section features two songs from River Blonde's first album, the intense "Deep of My Heart" and a driving "Police Dog Blues", leaving the ending to the classic "Key to the Highway", where the charge and pathos of live performance finally stand out.

Lee Chester “L.C.” Ulmer was a native of south Mississippi who for 50 years played music all over the U.S.—“like horse manure, everywhere!”—before returning home to the Ellisville area in 2001. He was a multi-instrumentalist who played guitar, keyboards, drums, fiddle, banjo mandolin, kazoo, and harmonica, and performed for many years as a “twelve piece” one-man band.

Ulmer was born in 1928 in Stringer, Mississippi, and later moved with his parents Luther and Mattie, six brothers, and seven sisters to a plantation near Moss Hill. His father played guitar, harmonica, and “jew’s harp.” Most of Ulmer’s siblings played music, and his mother’s cousin (Charlie Lindsey) was a bluesman. Many musicians visited the house to play and drink whiskey, the most famous being Meridian’s Jimmie Rodgers.

The plantation owner’s son ran a whiskey still, and Ulmer’s brother James hosted picnics, attracting many workers from the nearby log camp (Camp Allen) run by the E.L. Bruce lumber company. Music was also played at “fish fries” and “breakdowns” held at various homes most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Ulmer began playing guitar when he was nine years old and was soon playing with family and other local musicians on the family’s porch. He played by himself for tips, and often played together with white musicians, and remembers old square dance numbers he used to perform. He recalls with delight listening at home to 78rpm recordings by artists including Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Boy Fuller, Tampa Red, and Peetie Wheatstraw.

One of Ulmer’s biggest influences was the guitarist and street musician Blind Roosevelt Graves, who Ulmer would see when he visited Laurel to visit his sister. Graves made numerous recordings in both gospel and blues in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s, and Ulmer closely studied his slide guitar technique. Ulmer later built his own slide out of stainless steel.

From age 14 to 16 Ulmer built railway trestles across Lake Pontchartrain, and for the following five years or so worked out of a camp in Heidelberg, Mississippi, building railways spurs to oil wells. During this time he played regularly at a juke joint in nearby Paulding.

In 1949 Ulmer traveled to Kansas City, Kansas, to visit his sister, and stayed there on and off for two years. He played guitar for various gospel quartets, and his blues jobs included backing Chicago-based J.B. Lenoir at a local club. From 1951-55 Ulmer was based mostly in Laurel, where he played as a one-man band at local clubs including the Top Hat, Cotton Bowl, Wagon Wheel, and Twenty Grand. He also performed in juke joints in Meridian.

Ulmer continued to travel regionally, and while working in Florida he was hired to serenade a boat captain on a trip to Cuba. In 1955 he traveled to Holbrook, Arizona, where he found work at the Motoaurant, a 24-hour establishment on Route 66 that featured a truck stop, museum, restaurant, and nightclub, “The Cock’n’Bull.” Ulmer recorded advertisement songs for the Motaurant, and met and/or played with many famous musicians there including Elvis Presley, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Brook Benton, Nat King Cole, Fats Domino, and Louis Armstrong. He also performed regularly at a lumber camp in McNair, Arizona, and at a local Mormon church.

In 1957 Ulmer moved to San Bernardino and then Hollywood, California, where he made a living playing on the streets and joined the musicians union—he still carries his original card in his wallet. He continued to travel regularly back and forth to Arizona “every three or four weeks,” traveled up through Canada up to Alaska.

Ulmer made regular returns to Mississippi to visit his parents during the ‘50s, and in 1962 moved back to Laurel, where he worked various jobs and put together a band, the Bel Air Clowns, that played local clubs. In 1964 and 1965 he lived in Picayune and Pascagoula, where he worked at a missile plant, and following a brief stay in Laurel moved to Joliet, Illinois, where he lived for the next 37 years. In Joliet Ulmer worked construction, ran his own automotive shop, operated a tow truck, and performed regularly as a one-man-band and served as “host” at clubs including Club 99, Black Diamond, Big Ten, “Cindy Edwards juke,” the Hillcrest, and “Joe Howard’s.” He refused to play at the “South orea, so named because “when you went there you had to fight--if you didn’t you’d get walked on.”

In Joliet he performed on shows with Chicago-based blues artists including Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Hound Dog Taylor, Jimmy Reed, Sonny Thompson, and many others. Another local blues musician in Joliet was his cousin Shorty Howorth from Bay Springs, Mississippi. Ulmer experimented with various sorts of instruments, including an early synthesizer and a Gretsch White Falcon, which required two amplifiers and cost $1,800 when Ulmer purchased it new in 1965.

Ulmer returned to Mississippi in 2001 and became a regular performer at festivals and clubs throughout the state and region. The guitarist also released a CD, "Blues Come Yonder," on the Hill Country Records label in 2011. Ulmer was also a featured performer in the blues documentary "M for Mississippi." The musician passed away on February 14, 2016. # Scott Barretta

Freddy Fender was one of the few Hispanic stars in country music, a singer and songwriter whose work was defined largely by its strong Latin sensibility. Born Baldemar Huerta to a family of migrant laborers in San Benito, TX, on June 4, 1937, Fender began playing guitar early in his childhood. After dropping out of school at the age of 16 to join the Marine Corps, he released his first Spanish-language recordings under his given name in 1958.

While his initial sides were successful with listeners in Texas and Mexico, in 1959 he decided to adopt his stage name, along with a stronger rockabilly feel, in order to attract "gringo" audiences. The following year, he released the self-penned "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights," his most successful single yet. But in May of 1960, Fender was convicted of marijuana possession, and was sentenced to five years in Louisiana's notorious Angola State Prison (the same correctional facility which once held blues legend Leadbelly). After serving three years, he was paroled thanks to the efforts of Louisiana governor Jimmie Davis, on the condition that upon Fender's release he stay away from the corruptive influences of the music scene. After his parole ended, Fender tried to re-ignite his career, but with the exception of a few scattered nightclub gigs in the New Orleans area, he found little success, and ultimately returned to San Benito.

In Texas, he spent several years working as an auto mechanic, and even returned to school to pursue a degree in sociology. In 1974, he met Huey P. Meaux, the owner of the Houston-based Crazy Cajun label; after agreeing on a recording deal, it was Meaux who convinced Fender to steer in the direction of country & western while maintaining his music's Hispanic roots. After Fender's first Meaux-produced single, "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," failed to attract the attention of a major label, it was released on Crazy Cajun; in the first weeks of 1975, the song hit the top of both the country and pop charts, and Fender became an overnight star. For the follow-up, he re-recorded his early single, "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights," and notched his second straight number one country hit. Before the year ended, he had released yet another chart-topper in "Secret Love," and also issued two LPs, Since I Met You Baby and a self-titled effort.

Throughout the remainder of the '70s, Fender's success continued, most notably with the number two single "Living It Down" in 1976. That same year, he released two more albums, Your Cheatin' Heart and Rock 'N' Country. In 1977, he also issued a holiday record, Merry Christmas/Feliz Navidad. As the 1980s dawned, however, his popularity began slipping; after his final chart hit, 1983's "Chokin' Kind," he focused on an acting career, highlighted by an appearance in the 1988 Robert Redford film The Milagro Beanfield War. He remained largely silent as a musician until 1990, when he formed the Tex-Mex supergroup Texas Tornados with Doug Sahm, Flaco Jimenez, and Augie Meyers. After three albums, the group disbanded, and Fender again resumed his solo career. ~Jason Ankeny

D-Regulators - D-Day

Album: D-Day

4. In The Meantime, Somewhere Else (6:30)

9. The Pleasure's All Yours (3:49)
10. Just Making Conversation (4:13)
11. Ready When You Are (5:18)
12. Talking Two Minutes (4:10)

The D-Regulators (that used to be called Regulators) continue with their brand of jump blues, boogie, and some smooth blues. "D-Day" has a hot rhythm section, along with horns that enliven the place. The end result is a foot-tapping record with a solid harmonica and front man in Dr. Boogie. The best songs on the album might be "Ready When You Are" (a drivin little number), "Thank You, That'll Do!!!" (in the style of a swinging blues big band) and "Your Place or Mine?". The D-Regulators raise the temperature a few degrees.

10. Bonnie Raitt - Three Time Loser (4:13)

What better place to record live blues than at the yearly W.C. Handy Awards ceremony, the genre's most prestigious event? These ten highlights of shows recorded from 1996-2001 (with 1997 conspicuously missing), capture the artists at the top of their game in front of - and often playing along with - their peers and influences. Some, such as Luther Allison and Rufus Thomas, passed shortly after these performances were captured for posterity, but both churn through energetic and enthusiastic renditions of their popular tunes.

Allison in particular is electrifying as he blasts into "Cherry Red Wine" with the Memphis Horns, trashing just about all other versions of his signature tune. His son Bernard teams up with Deborah Coleman for an exhilarating take on the elder Allison's "Bad Love." Bonnie Raitt joins Thomas for a frisky "Walkin' the Dog" and closes the disc with a spunky, slide guitar-propelled "Three Time Loser," a Don Covay song she says she learned from Wilson Pickett. Joe Louis Walker, although winning for best blues band in 1996, kicks the set off with a soulful solo showcase on "Bluesifying." Taj Mahal exhibits his jazzy side on 2001's "Senor Blues," the year he won best blues band honors.

Susan Tedeschi burns on "Just Won't Burn" and Bobby Rush proves again why he consistently wins Entertainer of the Year awards on a typically raunchy and playful "Hootchie Man" from 2001. Paul Rishell and Annie Raines rise to the occasion as the only acoustic Delta performers on the disc, which is definitely tilted in favor of more commercially viable, R&B-influenced fare. The music is immaculately recorded and the album's pacing makes for a terrific listening experience. Here's hoping there are many more volumes that are this well conceived. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

A sharp suit and a thousand songs. That’s what earned New York City native Russell Alexander his moniker, early in the vast musical career that made him the master guitarist, singer, and songwriter for the Hitman Blues Band that he is today. Earning that nickname took a lot of work. But the most important gigs Russell ever did on the way to getting it, he didn’t even get to play at. As a teen, he earned $10 a gig to set up gear for a band that played five shows every weekend.

The young guitarist learned hundreds of songs that way, just by ear. Russell soon made a name for himself as a sideman. He worked as a freelancer 25 nights a month for years, flying all over the country and playing orchestral swing, country, jazz, rock, Hasidic music, Salsa, Greek, and more. Whenever a band got a request that they didn’t know, Russell did. “I got a nick name as the Hitman because I knew all the hits,” he said.

He could play anything professionally, but for fun, Russell played blues. When he showed up for jam sessions at the Chicago Blues Club wearing a tux and hat, the jam co-host would yell, “It’s Hitman Russ!” When Russell finally got a chance to build his dream project, it could only be called The Hitman Blues Band. 7 albums and countless tours later, thousands of fans confirm it was the right choice.

"Music that was born in Mississippi but reared in Melbourne....superbly driven by one of the dirtiest guitar tones you'll ever hear.....this great album is best enjoyed LOUD." - Baz Maxwell, Blues On the Hill Barely seven months after the release of the debut (self titled) album, Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk return with Shakedown, their second swinging expedition deep into the hypnotic boogie of Northern Mississippi juke joints. Cementing their reputation as the hardest working blues combo in the country, 2013 has already seen Chicken Walk receive the famed golden boot at Golden Plains, tour the nation twice with Tony Joe White and Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes, as well as share stages with everyone from Jimmy Cliff to Santana to Parliament Funkadelic to Gary Clark Jr. Somehow amongst all of this, the irrepressible combo found time to write and record album number two. Whereas the first album was famously built on the foundation of a mere handful of shows, Shakedown sees a road-matured Chicken Walk displaying a newfound focus and heartworn confidence, propelled by the extramural themes of shining sun, pouring rain, rivers, roads and trains. Effortlessly charged, Shakedown finds Chicken Walk... more credits released July 26, 2013 Chris Russell - Guitars, Vocals Dean Muller - Drums/Handclaps Max Crawdaddy - Spiritual Advisement

10. Hip Harp (4:25)

This album by Stefano Ronchi and Marcos Coll is a very pleasant surprise, and the album unites three countries. Stefano "Slidin' Wolf" Ronchi is an Italian singer-guitarist who was inspired by the 1920s/30s country blues and spirituals. He was a part of bands like Bluesrags and Tonky Blues. In 2004 he moved to Berlin where he bumped into Spanish harmonica player Marcos Coll. A collaboration was quickly formed with this album as a result. The duo likes variety and dares to take risks. For example, two songs are played with modern beats and electronics. In Trust, the country blues are supported by funky beats and electronics and even a rap can be heard. None of this detracts from the raw country blues.

In the closing instrumental Hip Harp, a tearing harmonica steals the leading role over a forest of funky hip hop beats and all kinds of samples. A very special funky blues song. The album opens with the swampy thumping sounds of the country blues Long Leg Blues. The rhythm is determined by just a bass drum and snare drum. She's Got It is a raw boogie with razor-sharp guitar and harmonica riffs, supported by an anonymous (due to a lack of info) drummer. A song John Lee Hooker would be proud of. Can't Share Your Love is a light country blues shuffle with warm harmonica. It's a song by Guitar Crusher, who sings the song in his raw, broken voice.

In Me And The Devil, the harmonica sound is passed through all kinds of distorters, creating a very special spacey sound. This fits perfectly into the atmospheric blues number. Oddly enough, the primitive thumping boogie My Last Pair Of Shoes reminded me of Mungo Jerry's “good time” music. Light cajun influences appear in the fresh sparkling country blues On Revival Day while Ry Cooder seems close in the funky shuffle La Mujer Del Capitán. An instrumental song, except for the spoken word contribution, with raw harmonica and sparkling mandolin. The adventurous nature of this duo has done this album a lot of good. Highly recommended for both country blues fans and the more adventurous blues fans.

Born in New Jersey, this incredible singer and harmonica player gives us in this CD a collection of fifteen versions of different great bluesmen like Sonny Boy Williamson, Lowell Fulson, Robert Johnson, Junior Wells, Jimmy Liggings, Willie Dixon, George ‘Harmonica’ Smith or Muddy Waters among others. He performs them with an immense respect and recognition, playing with an honesty that only people who really love blues can do. Mikey is a powerful solid passionate harp player gifted with an imaginative phrasing and a big fat tone. His harmonica knowledge makes him become an attractive technical musician who knows all blowers musical knacks. Mikey combines amplified and acoustic harp in this cd. The musicians who back him are really bright, showing a wide blues knowledge and they always give the perfect support to make Mikey shine at a very high level. This cd have pleasantly surprised me by the coolness and the genuine Chicago blues music they tastefully and cleverly perform.

Born in the oil swamps of Beaumont, Texas, and raised on the blues, Ole Lonesome is a blue collar swamp rock band with its ear tuned to the past and boots to the future. With their love of tone and electric live performances, Zachary Feemster (vocals and guitar), J. Wesley Hardin (bass), Gregory Mosley (keys), Jimmy Devers (drums), and Greg Achord (guitar) look to recreate the colors of decades gone and take their music through the stratosphere. Ole Lonesome joined label head/co-producer Mike Zito at Dockside Studio in Maurice, Louisiana, to record the new album.

“After a gig in Deep Ellum, something caught my eye just outside the city off of the highway, an old sign that read ‘Tejas Motel,” explains Zachary Feemster about the album’s title origin. “Instantly, I knew this was my inspiration for the album and I had to describe this place with the titles and lyrics. As we started writing, the songs were coming effortlessly and each one was becoming a player in the story of Tejas Motel. The riffs were tuff, the vibe was gritty, and they were sitting comfortably in that grungy motel chair. When you listen to the title track, I think you’ll really grasp the vision we were trying to convey. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a concept album, but I can definitely say that if each song was a character, they would be well acquainted with each other. The energy between the songs strengthens the vision and brings to life the story of Tejas Motel.”

“I have known Zach Feemster for 20 years,” said Mike Zito in announcing the signing. “He toured with me and my band in 2011 for my Greyhound album. This group he has put together is a serious rock ‘n’ roll blues machine. They have the fire of Southeast Texas in their hearts and the gritty sound to prove it.
This album will be a big sound on the Roots/Blues scene – it’s modern yet old school at the same time. A true band that plays with energy and purpose, and I am super proud to have Ole Lonesome on GCR.”

“We are beyond ecstatic to announce the upcoming release of our debut album on Gulf Coast Records,” said Zachary Feemster, “and honored to have collaborated with some big names like Mike Zito and Kid Andersen. Recording at Dockside Studio was such an awesome experience for us all, and we are excited to share Tejas Motel with our fans and the world.”

Mick Kolassa's love of the blues began when he was a teenager and with his music he shares that love with the world. Rather than staying within a single genre of blues, Mick loves and celebrates all styles of blues, so he calls his style “Free Range Blues”. Whether it is a Delta Blues song from the 1930s, Piedmont Blues, Chicago Blues, Memphis style Soul Blues, slick city blues or cool country blues, Mick loves and plays them all. I also love to find the blues hidden in songs of other genres, “bluesifying” songs and doing what he call “uncovers”.

09. Keep On Truckin' (4:08)

In an interview, Reverend Freakchild mentioned that he is a Buddhist but that he also considers music to be his religion, thus his lifelong pursuit to explore the outer limits of the blues, begun at an early age, has taken him around the world and across the musical universe. His 17 th release, Songs Of Beauty For Ashes Of Realization, finds him once again tinkering with melodies, experimenting with musical forms, reshaping his compositions with an undying thirst for reinvention. The nine tracks are not new but are new versions of songs from his prolific career of solo recordings that began in 2001. The Reverend always likes to feature his high-profile friends and this album has contributions from G. Love, Hazel Miller, drummer Chris Parker (Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker), guitarists Chris Bergson and Mark Karan (Bob Wier Rat Dog), multi-instrumentalist Hugh Pool and The Reverend Shawn Amos.

First heard on the 2015 album, Hillbilly Zen-Punk Blues, the philosophical poem “All I Got Is Now,” is fleshed out with the addition of a second layer of drums and B3 Organ to enhance the deep groove. The infectiously funky title track from 2018 release, Dial It In, is spiced up with congas from Jason Hann (String Cheese Incident, Issac Hayes) and a spacey reverb treatment. Country fired road trip anthem “All Across America,” first heard on God Shaped Hole back in 2010 is beefed up with thick organ swells from Steve Sirockin. The sorrowful San Francisco lament, ”Hippy Bluesman Blues,” features Mark Karan’s tasty lead guitar on a shuffle that is equal parts Haight Ashbury and Beale Street.

Reverend Freakchild rips on acoustic slide guitar on the Delta-meets-psychedelic-rock solo number “Amsterdam Blues,” resurrected from his 2001 debut Blues & Spirituals. Originally recorded as a lo-fi guitar and drums duet in his 2015 Tears Of Fire, is transformed into a blazing blues rock inferno fueled by lead guitar from Chris Bergson with bass and harmonica from Pool over Parker’s incomparable drum track. Sheryl Renee joins The Reverend on the fully orchestrated update to “Skyflower,” the sweet country love song transformed into a soaring cinematic experience. Freakchild then burns on resonator guitar while fellow blues and spititual prophet, The Reverend Shawn Amos, lends his voice and harmonica to a new live off the floor rendition of “Don’t Miss Nothing ‘Til It’s Gone.”

The album finale, “Keep On Truckin’,” pays tribute, not only to country blues legend Blind Boy Fuller (1907-1941), but also to Freakchild’s main inspiration, The Grateful Dead, whose musical sensibility formed the blueprint for the fusion of folk, blues, rock ,country and soul. ~Rick J Bowen

Mark Cameron - Nasty Business

01. Sorry (3:21)

03. What's For Supper (4:55)
04. Language Of The Blues (3:50)
05. That's A Fact (6:18)
06. Nick's Place (3:22)
07. Everything (4:19)
08. Combination (Feat. Teresa James) (4:21)
09. Life Is Good (3:19)
10. Voodoo (4:02)

Working hard to further explore what he calls “The Minneapolis Sound,” guitarist Mark Cameron returns with Nasty Business, debuting on the Blue Heart Records label. The ten new tracks feature the muscular sound generated by his hard working five-piece band. Backing his gritty guitar and vocals are Scott Lundberg on bass, drummer Dan Schroeder, blues harp man Rick Miller and Sheri Cameron on saxophone, percussion & vocals. Cameron brought in several guests to bolster the big sound including Tommy Barbarella on keyboards, vocalists Tonia Hughes, Sara Renner, and Grammy nominee Teresa James along with the horn section of Zack Lozier and Ian Schroeder.

Cameron’s guitar brings us into the opening track, “Sorry,” a full production number that sets the tone for things to come. The title track, “Nasty Business,” features a slinky groove from Schroeder along with greasy harmonica and sweet backing vocals in contrast to the heady subject matter. The bump ‘n’ grind blues “What’s For Supper” is layered with snarky idioms on the subject of tough love, demonstrating Cameron’s rapier bluesman wit. Acclaimed drummer, producer and sound designer, Greg Schutte, sits in on the swinging “Language Of The Blues,” with hot horn jabs and more sweet backing vocals emphasizing Cameron’s message of peace and love. The slow burning “That’s A Fact,” has Cameron playing the role of a brooding lover with convincing theatrics.

Cameron narrates the tribute to a northland juke joint and its notorious proprietor, “Nick’s Place,” that could have come out of the pages of a Mickey Spillane novel. The pulsating “Everything” lays out the attributes of a popular Femme Fatale in an advisory tone. Teresa James joins Cameron on the sultry Latin spiced poem of unrequited love “Combination.” He and Miller commiserate on common karmic pratfalls during the acoustic Delta duet “Life Is Good.” The Swamp Pop love song “Voodoo” closes the set with melodic flair. Blues is certainly Mark Cameron’s business, and his blues is nasty! ~Rick J Bowen
