4. Looking For My Baby (3:48)
5. I Know A Man (4:02)

9. You Are My World (4:15)
10. It's Hard To Please A Woman (3:45)
11. Me And Phil (3:17)

Texas border town legend Long John Hunter seems to elude international acclaim year after year of his storied career as a bluesman without peer. Perhaps it is his rough-edged, strained but cool voice that seems to match his unassuming personality, or that his slightly echoplexed, twangy electric guitar is not as distinctive as his predecessors or peers. Nonetheless, Hunter is instantly recognizable for those who care to hear his original songs - based in real life drama, love and regret, or the questionable behavior of human beings in general.

Teamed with producer/co-songwriter Dennis Walker and rhythm guitarist Alan Mirikitani, who also contributes lyrical and music content, Hunter just keeps rolling along with his brand of Southwestern electric blues that anyone can enjoy no matter their urban or rural environs. With bassist Richard Cousins and keyboardist Jimmy Pugh, Hunter plays short numbers that suggest a down-home feeling mixed with the wisdom of experience. Horns by trombonist Ira Nepus, trumpeter Lee Thornburg and tenor saxophonist Tom Peterson punctuate and fill out the rockin' jump blues "Apple of My Eye," as Hunter happily finds his soulmate, while "Looking for a Party" is as easy, good-time shuffle as you'd expect, and "It's Hard to Please a Woman" is your ever-lovin' juke joint blues about being in love and down to your last dime.

There's a slinky cha-cha flavor to "What's Come Over You?," a New Orleans/Professor Longhair-type beat infused into "Looking for My Baby," and the wandering "Greener Pastures" in a slow, exasperated mood. Similarly fraught with frustration, "You Say You Want a Caddy" refers to a car, not a golf buddy, where Hunter emphatically says "no can do," but he offers an alternative on the old-school soul of "I Know a Man" with Pugh's fine organ playing underneath the pit of it. At his most devotional, Hunter sings "You Are My World" as if he really has found a true love, while escapades of crossing the border on "Me & Phil" show the wanderlusting, mischievous side isn't that far removed from a perhaps domesticated general lifestyle.

This is a marvelous recording, entertaining and satisfying from start to finish, proving that old dogs and new tricks are not necessarily polar opposites. Hunter's fans - whose opportunities to hear him on recordings have been few and far between - should enjoy this with no reservations. /Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic

11. I'm Broke (5:00)
12. Walking Catfish (4:02)
13. Locksmith Man (2:56)
14. Love Prevails (4:48)

Long John's second album for the Alligator imprint is even more potent than his first, Texas Border Legend. This time around, Hunter's sly, drawling vocals and stinging clusters of guitar are well to the fore, keeping the spotlight firmly in place on this Texas guitar legend. The record was cut in Austin and Abilene, Texas, and as such boasts Lone Star talent like Derek O'Brien, who plays rhythm guitar on this disc and solos on "I Don't Care" and "V-8 Ford."

Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff blows saxophone on eight tunes and harmonica on "Locksmith Man." For his part, Hunter contributes 10 of the 14 tunes, co-writing with various members of his Walking Catfish Band or his co-producers, Tary Owens and John Foose. Long John's no-holds-barred approach literally screams Texas blues, letting you know you're listening to an originator, not an imitator. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

Also herein are many outstanding tracks by lesser known artists such as Peppermint Harris and Goree Carter whose track "Rock Awhile" is one of many singles cited as 'the first rock and roll record' and is also often cited as an influence over Chuck Berry. Also of particular note are the great tracks by Cal Green and his brother Clarence Green whose song "Red Light" ends this fantastic collection.

1. Roll, Roll, Roll (3:22)
2. Boogie Rambler (3:09)
3. A Little More Time (4:21)
4. Bon Ton Roulet (3:53)
5. Feelin' Good Doin' Bad (4:14)
6. Alligators Around My Door (5:18)
7. Street Walkin' Woman (4:22)

11. Quit My Baby (4:11)
12. I Can't Stand It No More (3:54)
13. I Met The Blues In Person (5:01)
14. It's Mighty Crazy (3:46)
15. Two Trains Running (5:56)

Louisiana-born and Texas-toughened, Brooks (66 at the time of this recording), Hunter (68), and Walker (62) show what blues peers can do in what seem to be peaking years. There are three numbers where all three go full-tilt; the rest of the material varies in personnel, group, and solo emphasis. The distinctive, gutsy voice of Brooks, Walker's loping guitar lines with his slightly rough, seasoned voice, and the riveting presence of Walker on all counts, musically and vocally, are showcased to consistently satisfying levels.

Of the 15 cuts, there are a handful of rockers and boogies, a few pure soul tunes and ballads, a jump blues, a Cajun calypso, and some straight blues - something for everyone. The hard-swinging "Street Walking Woman" and the slower shuffle "Feel Good Doin' Bad" are great musically, if lacking in message. Walker gets a back-to-back showcase on "I Can't Stand It No More/I Met the Blues in Person," and he tears it up. Brooks pleads and shouts on "This Should Go on Forever," while Hunter's highlights are the cautious "Alligators Around My Door" and the B.B. King cop on "Quit My Baby."

Score some plus points for Kaz Kazanoff's sax and harp playing, and the horn charts are mighty fine throughout. Speaking of unsung heroes and heroines, credit pianist Marcia Ball on three cuts, Riley Osbourn playing keys on the others, and Ervin Charles, who does yeoman-like vocal and guitar work and gets two showcase cuts on his own, the best being the Muddy Waters closer "Two Trains Running." This is a historic joining of three blues legends, with so much talent you have to give huge props. Also, buy this simply for Bruce Iglauer's info-laden song notes, alone worth the price of the CD. /Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic

Long John Hunter - Ride With Me

Year: 1992/1993/1998
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 51:02
Size: 118,0 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Full

1. Ride With Me (3:24)
2. Irene (6:09)
3. El Paso Rock (2:57)
4. Crazy Love (5:41)
5. Bad Feet (4:11)
6. I Raise My Hand (5:34)
7. Dream About The Devil (4:31)
8. West Texas Homecoming (6:57)
9. Tell Me (4:31)
10. Still Blue (7:02)

Hunter's third album for Alligator finds him in tip-top form, sounding like a man half his age (62 at the time) and brandishing a nasty guitar tone that supposedly died out with 1950s one-track mono recording. Everything on here is kept in a nice Texas roadhouse framework, with plenty of air moving behind Long John from a fine combo that includes Derek O'Brien on guitar and Sarah Brown on bass.

For his end of it, Hunter sounds positively involved on tunes like "Irene," "Crazy Love," the rockin' "Bad Feet," the uptempo "Dream About the Devil," a fun duet with T.D. Bell on "West Texas Homecoming," and the title track. With his songwriting hand clearly defined on all ten tunes here, Hunter has made his most realized album to date, showing him still in sharp command of his prestigious powers. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

First go see 'touch of evil', and then buy this record. Long John Hunter cut these sides as a minimally-experienced factory worker who knew what kind of sound he wanted, if he didn't know much else about music [the liner notes consist of a fantastic interview with LJH about this time], backed up by a band of fellow amateurs having a great time with some hard-rocking blues and amped-up pop ditties. A great example of the fusion of western swing, country, blues, r and b and mexican music in the southwest. with the rawness of his backup and his biting tele-tone, Long John lays down a musical blueprint for Texas blues rock and a spiritual one for d.i.y. music of any stripe. ~Amazon

Cars had become one of the centers of American life by the 1920s and plenty of blues musicians we’re singing about them. It’s interesting that Blind Lemon Jefferson sang in several songs about driving cars, something he could never do as a blind man. In 1931, Memphis Minnie sang about her house burning down, but the only thing she’s worried about is losing her car. Robert Johnson sang some of the most poetic lyrics sexualizing the car as a woman. Modern day bluesmen have continued singing about cars as these titles show.

For many years Long John Hunter played in clubs without much attention, but that time sweating it out in roadhouses has paid off. During that time, he developed a gutsy, forceful technique that was fully evident on his belated 1993 debut, Ride With Me. Although his second album, Border Town Legend, is a slicker, more accessible effort, Hunter hasn't lost any of his spicy, distinctive flavor. Working with a horn section, he still manages to make himself the most powerful element on the record -- both his guitar playing and his heated vocals ensure that. Furthermore, Hunter's songwriting is growing stronger. Out of the nine songs he has written or co-written for the album, he has contributed some first-rate tunes that might not stretch beyond generic conventions, but still are mighty fine. -- Allmusic.

Despite what legend and lore may tell you, the blues did not originate in the Delta. It grew out of the African American experience in the early 20th Century, wherever musically inventive people faced oppression and adversity. And that was happening in plenty of places besides northwest Mississippi. The blues was a product of its times, and so developed in parallel in many areas of the southern U.S. Each region produced its own dialect of the blues, though the Mississippi Delta and the Piedmont of the Southeast were certainly major centers. But of all the regions where blues flourished, Texas—being practically its own country in terms of culture, population, and size, and being home to hotspots such as Austin, Houston, and Dallas—had a profound impact on blues. The Lone Star state still remains a major influence on modern music styles, including and especially the blues.
