Had a really rough day? Want to just relax, reboot, and get happy? If so, then the new 24th Street Wailers album, Where Evil Grows, is just the ticket. The album is the much anticipated follow-up to last year’s well received Wicked, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Sometimes, when music is described as “vintage” so-and-so, there is a connotation of being staid, perhaps even stale. The 24th Street Wailers aren’t having any of that. Their animated offerings are always a good time, full of spunk and passion. This outing features 10 tracks written by drummer and vocalist Lindsay Beaver, plus three covers. Like their previous album, Where Evil Grows is produced and engineered by Billy Horton at his Fort Horton Studios in Wyldwood, Texas. As with all their albums, the mix and sound are excellent. The band is made up of Canadian and American members including new guitarist, St. Louis native Elliot Sowell, who fills the vacancy left by Emily Burgess’ departure last year.

Beaver’s vocals, a delightfully robust cross between Brenda Lee and Etta James, are wonderfully strong, nuanced, and convincing. The band is tight, and they continue to draw us in with their joy and enthusiasm. Standout tracks on Where Evil Grows include the rocker “Cursed,” and “Just Wait,” which features sweet tenor sax soloing by Jon Wong. Pianist Jessie Whiteley, and Wong, both lay down fine solo work on “All I Think of Is You,” and a simply killer version of “I Found A Love” definitely takes one back in time. Mike Archer’s bass work is spot on throughout, and the band really gels as a unit.

If you enjoy your “vintage,” or if you prefer, “retro” jump blues, with some kick instead of a lame imitation, this album is for you. /Barry Kerzner, American Blues Scene

Personnel: Lindsay Beaver (vocals, drums, percussion); Elliot Sowell (guitar); Michael Archer (bass, backing vocals); Jesse Whiteley (piano, backing vocals); Jon Wong (tenor saxophone); Billy Horton (vibraphone).

10. On A Mission (3:22)
11. Don't Make It Easy (3:27)

The 24th Street Wailers, a young academically trained Toronto-based blues band named after their home address, released their new dirty blues album, Unshakeable. Members include lead singer and drummer Lindsay Beaver, Beaver’s husband Mike Archer on bass, songwriter Emily Burgess who writes half of the material on guitar, and Jon Wong on saxophone. “Home Cookin’” and “Unshakeable” have a terrific 60’s feel, slow yet upbeat, and fantastic vocals. You can’t unshake the feeling. “I’m Not Free” is a bit slower paced, so we have a great variety of tracks. Jon Wong’s saxophone shines in “Trouble” and “Jack, Jim, Johnny, and Me.” Everyone’s talents pool together creating a great blend in “I Will,” specifically the opening.

Straight out of Toronto, the 24th Wailers are back. The fabulous drummer with the great lead vocals. The killer rhythm section, that greasy saxophone, that tasty guitar. Century upgrade of jumpin’ jivin’ juke joint blues. This time around, the lively Canadians take their music to the great state of Texas for recording purposes. Because Texas understands hot. And it understands fun.

Recorded in Austin Texas and produced by Billy Horton - producer and bassist for Texas rocker Nick Curan and who is also currently Jimmie Vaughan’s bass player - Wicked is a collection of 11 songs by Lindsay Beaver and Emily Burgess, with two covers, both of them considerable departures from the originals. Horton’s worked produced a who’s-who of Texas bands, and he helped put The Wailers’ drive and energy into the record’s grooves.

Personnel: Lindsay Beaver (drums, vocals, guitar on track 10); Emily Burgess (guitar); Michael Archer (bass, backing vocals); Jonathan Wong (tenor sax); T Jarrod Bonta (piano).

Notes: In just a few short years, The 24th Street Wailers have quickly made a name for themselves in the Canadian music scene and beyond. In August 2011, they were the only non-Quebec band to win both the Releve en Blues and the Bourse Air Transat/Blues Sur Seine competitions at Festiblues International De Montreal, which sent them to France to perform at The Blues Sur Seine Festival. In early 2012 they were nominated for New Artist of the Year at The Maple Blues Awards, and Blues Group/Duo of the Year at the Sirius XM Indie Awards. In February 2012, they were semi-finalists in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee where they performed for industry professionals and blues enthusiasts from around the world, further cementing their place among their musical cohorts. In true grassroots fashion, The 24th Street Wailers booked their first coast-to-coast tour that saw them perform in 29 cities in Canada and the U.S throughout the summer of 2012. Tour highlights included an opening spot for legendary blues pioneer Jimmie Vaughan, and performances on prestigious festival stages at the Vancouver Island Music Festival, Harrison Festival of the Arts, Folk on the Rocks festival in Yellowknife, Festiblues International de Montreal and Limestone City Blues Festival.
The release of Unshakeable has brought The 24th Street Wailers much deserved recognition from festival bookers, reviewers and DJs from around the world, including spots on the Roots Music Report and #1 charting on the !Earshot National Campus charts. Music media and tastemakers have embraced them enthusiastically, and the kudos continues to be plentiful for Unshakeable.

“There are bands out there with 20 years experience on them that could not, and have not, produced an album this real and technically proficient. And the music sounds killer too!” Barry Kerzner (American Blues Scene)

“The overall groove of Unshakeable is causal but never sloppy, coy and occasionally slutty-but in a really cool way, One of my favorite outings of 2012”(Gonzo Online)

“A worthy representative for the new face of the blues”-Richard Knechtel (GBFS/Summerfolk AD)

It is apparent when either listening to their recordings or attending one of their raucous live shows that The 24th Street Wailers are a band in every sense of the word. Together they eat, sleep and breathe for their love of music?

Notes: An exciting debut record from this young & fierce blues band. With powerhouse vocals delivered by the drummer, gritty bass, gut busting sax and smooth bluesy guitar, this live off the floor recording captures the energy & strength that music lovers crave
Dirty LIttle Young'uns was recorded over two days, 16 hours to be exact, in the studio. The 24th Street Wailers took the “live off the floor” approach, meaning all performances were done in the moment, live! There were very few edits, solos were performed live and Lindsay’s drum and vocal takes were performed simultaneously. The band wanted the listener to feel as though they are sitting front and center, right in the action! When listening to this record bursting with original songs in the blues style have a drink and a good time!
