Guido Toffoletti (Venice, 20 June 1951 - Cavarzere, 22 August 1999) was an Italian musician. One of the most important and long-lived exponents of blues music in Italy, with his Blues Society has contributed significantly to spreading the music of the Devil. Born in Venice, but immediately proves impatient to normal life. He lived the first school years in a boarding school in Asolo, but then he sailed the school to be able to play in a beat complex. His passion for music exploded at a very young age and in particular for the king of Rock & roll, Elvis Presley, of whom he became an avid collector.

Fourteen year old boy runs away from home and goes to work as roadie for the various beat groups of the period. In spite of being in the middle of music, he adapts himself to transporting instruments to musicians, particularly to the Renegades. With a first rudimentary guitar he learns the first notes of the blues. But in Italy there is no space for this kind of music. He then decided to try his luck and went to London, with little money and without a destination. He works in the premises, adapting to all the works, just to stay close to the music. He himself told of having married a dancer by proxy, just to stay in London.

One night he meets Alexis Korner, the father of the British Blues on the street. Alexis is his teacher and patron, but he is above all a great fraternal friend who introduces him to the English music scene, presenting him as "the Venetian who knows us more than ourselves". Guido exploded his passion for the blues and in 1976 he returned to Italy, founded his own group, the Blues Society, and released his first album Born in London in january 1976, a recording product for a small label and limited edition. In his discography, Guido starts by offering personal versions of the classics of blues, songs by Muddy Waters ("I Can't Be Satisfied") or Willie Dixon or Jimmy Reed, but then the compositions become for the most part in his name.

In April 1995 Guido and his Blues Society also participated, the only Italian, to the 'Alexis Korner Memorial Concert' along with the biggest names in English blues. Become friends with Mick Taylor and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, a guest in the Paris studios where they were recording the record Steel Wheels and James Cotton. James Cotton, Louisiana Red, Mick Taylor and Ian Stewart, Tolo Marton (guitarist, formerly Le Orme), Herbie Goins (former voice of Alexis Korner's band) and Paul Jones (ex Manfred Mann) play among his records as well as Zoot Money (formerly Animals), Jorma Kaukonen and Dick Heckstall-Smith (formerly Colosseum). /Excerpt from biography, translated from Italian by Google

The debut album by Manfred Mann holds up even better 40 years on than it did in 1964. It's also one of the longest LPs of its era, clocking in at 39 minutes, and there's not a wasted note or a song extended too far among its 14 tracks. The Manfreds never had the reputation that the Rolling Stones enjoyed, which is a shame, because The Five Faces of Manfred Mann is one of the great blues-based British invasion albums; it's a hot, rocking record that benefits from some virtuoso playing as well, and some of the best singing of its era, courtesy of Paul Jones, who blew most of his rivals out of the competition with his magnificently impassioned, soulful performance on "Untie Me," and his simmering, lusty renditions of "Smokestack Lightning" and "Bring It to Jerome."

The stereo mix of the album, which never surfaced officially in England until the 1997 EMI anniversary reissue (remastered in 24-bit digital sound), holds up very nicely, with sharp separation between the channels yet - apart from a few moments on "Untie Me" - few moments of artificiality. /Bruce Eder, AllMusic

The Blues Band - Few Short Lines

Year: 2011
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 57:49

Scans: Full

1. Few Short Lines (4:41)
2. My Brother Was A Sailor (w. Mike Sanchez) (4:03)
3. Sway With Me (w. Linda Lewis & Mike Sanchez) (4:36)
4. You Are True (w. Southside Johnny) (3:39)
5. Living With The Blues (w. Al Kooper) (3:55)
6. I Believe I'm In Love With You (w. Maggie Bell & Pete Wingfield) (4:06)

12. Road (w. Al Kooper) (5:26)
13. It Take Love (3:19)
14. You Can Dance To The Blues (w. Southside Johnny) (3:43)

Hallelujah! Yes, it's a brand new album from one of the UK's best loved and most popular bands. We could say it stars the incomparable singer and harmonic player supreme Paul Jones. We could add it also stars Tom McGuinness on lead guitar. But The Blues Band is really a co-operative with a team of superb musicians on board. And, this time, they are augmented by welcome guest artists adding extra blues power. Among those joining the regulars are singers Linda Lewis and Maggie Bell, the legendary Al Kooper on keyboards, Mike Sanchez and Pete Wingfield on piano, and Southside Johnny on raunchy vocals.

Together they tear through a barnstorming selection of mainly originals numbers, many written by bass man Gary Fletcher and slide guitarist Dave Kelly. There are 14 tracks to enjoy, ranging from Paul Jones "Suddenly I Like It" to Tom's thoughtful "My Brother Was A Sailor" - all about the perils of life at sea. Few Short Lines makes a fine addition to the legacy of a band, whose career now spans more than 30 years. Good to know they are still out on the road, playing the music they love. /Amazon

If there is such a thing as a British 'blues pedigree', then Dave Kelly's sets the standard. Kelly is a blues craftsman - a journeyman who has served his time with the best.

In New York he jammed with Muddy Waters. He became a friend to Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker, who both felt the benefit of Dave's playing in their touring bands. It was Dave's big sister, the late Jo-Ann Kelly, who first opened his ears to the blues, although his passion for rock and roll - and especially the work of Buddy Holly - remains intact. In 1967 he joined The John Dummer Blues Band. After three albums and a solo project he continued to polish his style and technique throughout an adventurous career with some of Britain's finest players. When The Blues Band was formed in 1979, the post of slide guitarist and joint vocalist was a foregone conclusion - and bringing his friend, the bassist Gary Fletcher, along to that first rehearsal, was a bonus. Dave Kelly's guitar and vocals form the very backbone of The Blues Band's distinctive sound. The Blues Band is still one of Britain´s best Blues Band and set up high standards. Today, after 35 years 'treading the boards' with the band, with his solo albums, duo tours with Paul Jones, and soundtrack work (for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's 'King of the Ghetto' and the Comic Strip's 'Strike!') Dave Kelly is firmly established as Europe's premier blues performer.

DAVE KELLY Family & Friends "We Had It All" are 18 unreleased tracks from his musical journey covers over 35 years in the business and feat. Names like ERIC BIBB, CHRIS BARBER, MAGGIE BELL, LONG JOHN BALDRY, CHRISTINE COLLISTER and many more.

24. The Way You Do The Things You Do (2:40)
25. You've Got To Take It (2:16)
26. Hubble Bubble (Toil And Trouble) (2:24)

The 26 songs here represent a slightly better investment than the See For Miles Records R&B collection by the Manfreds, as well as newer remasterings (by 14 years) of the same material. The notes by Paul Jones also provide an inside perspective, as well as a funny account of his entry into the band (and offer an incidental defense of Bo Diddley's underrated complexity as a writer and influence on the Manfreds).

Songs include "Smokestack Lightning," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Got My Mojo Working," "Groovin'," "Watermelon Man," "I Put a Spell on You," and a bunch of other standards and originals. The only frustration is the presence of a shot of the band playing at the Marquee, which makes one wish all the more that somebody had recorded one of their shows at the time. The group's command of R&B and blues improved as they went on -- it was always little strange hearing an outfit as non-guitar-dominated as the Manfreds do some of this stuff, with lots of vibraphone and organ, not to mention sax -- all of which, along with their jazz roots, separated them from the Stones, Yardbirds, et al. But by the time of "Down the Road Apiece," they were making it work close to 100 percent of the time. /Bruce Eder, AllMusic
