'Hill Country Love' was recorded in an unconventional location – a former legal office in Ripley, Mississippi. This space, initially earmarked to be Burnside's juke joint, created an authentic and resonant sound environment, capturing the essence of the album's soulful and gritty aesthetic. Produced alongside Luther Dickinson, the album's 14 tracks were completed in an extraordinary two-day session, highlighting the spontaneous and raw energy of Burnside's music.

I Be Trying might be the title of the new record from two-time GRAMMY nominee Cedric Burnside, but it's also a mission statement in an era when plenty of us have discovered what "the blues" really means. Recorded over three days at Royal Studios in Memphis (the home studio of Al Green and Hi Records in the 60s and 70s), this album is the ultimate statement of purpose for a critically acclaimed artist who has proudly carried the mantle of Mississippi Hill Country blues around the world. Over thirteen tracks, Burnside delivers his bruised but unfettered truth over blistering guitar and deep pocket drums-a sound birthed in his soul but developed and perfected on the road. But no matter how far he travels, the righteous sound he makes could only come from one place. I Be Trying is the sound of modern Mississippi. Produced by second-generation Memphis soul trailblazer Boo Mitchell ("Uptown Funk") and featuring guest appearances from Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) and Zac Cockrell (Brittany Howard), I Be Trying takes the sound that Burnside learned from his grandfather, blues legend R.L. Burnside, and reinterprets it into a modern, bold Black American sound that expands the sonic landscape while respecting and honoring it's roots.

'A forgotten roll of film was found. Shot before the turn of the century, the photographs resonate with music. The images inspired an accompanying soundtrack. The music is full of stories. The songs and stories originate in two neighboring rural counties. The cast of characters includes four families of Mississippi musicians, three generations deep, and a photographer from Texas.' - Luther Dickinson In 2017, Wyatt McSpadden found an old roll of film and tracked down members of North Mississippi Allstars to share his forgotten photographs. The images were so profound and so beautiful that they would come to inspire the latest recording, Up And Rolling. The images inspired the band to ask, 'What did the music sound like that night in 96? What does Mississippi music sound like now? What would ideally be on the push button AM/FM radio as we drove thru the hills?' The North Mississippi Allstars would return to the famous Zebra Ranch to record Up And Rolling, inspired by Wyatt's images. They gathered together, trimmed back the wisteria, and swept out the converted barn recording studio. The fired up the tube amps and old computers and began conjuring up modern Mississippi music, ancient and futuristic all at once. Telling it how it was and how they think it should be. Up And Rolling is modern Mississippi. Transcending time and space, the music reaches out into the dark of night like the wisteria vine, looking for free hearted souls to latch onto and wedge into the foundation of hate, slowly tearing down walls a generation at a time.

Cedric Burnside - Benton County Relic

11. I'm Hurtin (2:49)
12. Ain't Gonna Take No Mess (3:36)

The best blues songs have an element of danger like they’re going to fall apart at any moment. It’s a feeling not unlike building Ikea furniture while drunk. Cedric Burnside’s Benton County Relic taps into that invigorating feeling of falling, perfectly slowing the beat of songs to create huge grooves and using raw guitar to accentuate the melodies.

Cedric Burnside is the grandson of North Mississippi blues legend R.L. Burnside. R.L.’s work can be described as wild blues, with manic drums and beautifully random guitar outbursts. Cedric, who played drums for his grandfather, has a similar sensibility.

Burnside is not a carbon-copy of his grandfather, nor of his father, the blues drummer Calvin Jackson. He borrows liberally from both, but also weaves in contemporary influences, creating a sound that takes his family’s Hill country roots and gives them an ever-so-gentle polish, keeping the wildness and freeness of the grooves, but also instituting more control.

Cedric also has a nice voice, with a warmth and old-school blues sweetness not necessarily associated with his family. He sings in a similarly percussive way, but also manages to smooth out the edges. Put together, it makes Benton County Relic a continuation of the blues, rather than just a repetition of it.

“Get Your Groove On,” as the title suggests, swings and bounces along as Burnside’s guitar mimics his singing. You can’t quite dance to the track, but it’ll definitely make you sway. While Burnside doesn’t play drums on the album (they’re more than capably handled by Brian Jay), his respect for the groove drives the record. His ability to slow a down song and somehow make it feel fast is simply amazing. For instance, a track like “Don’t Leave Me Girl” could be a standard soul song in the hands of another artist. But with Jay and Burnside, it becomes sexy and propulsive, the silence of the song just as important as the notes and beats.

Many of the grooves will sound familiar. They’ve been used by everyone from the White Stripes to the Black Keys, to, unsurprisingly, the North Mississippi Allstars, with whom Burnside has played. Burnside has an amazing ability to work the beat, expanding rests just long enough to create suspense throughout a song. One could guess it’s a gift he inherited from grandfather, but it’s far more likely a skill he cultivated through countless performances and close observations of the audience.

It can be hard for artists to let songs breathe. There’s something scary about letting a song do nothing, if only for a moment. Burnside is fearless in that regard, and it’s especially impressive since he recorded the album in just two days. The album has an intentional feel; the performances are all well thought-out. But there’s also a looseness to the album that makes it radiate with a live, unscripted energy. Burnside is masterful at knowing when to let a song do it’s thing. Unlike my Tarva dresser, built on the strength of a six-pack, Benton County Relic will stand the test of time. ~by Steve Ovadia

Richard Johnston - Foot Hill Stomp

04. Catfish Blues & I Feel Good Little Girl (6:00)

09. Chicken And Gravy (4:54)

Richard Johnston is a country blues musician who won the 2001 International Blues Talent competition award, and the 2001 Albert King Award for most promising blues guitarist. His work as a street musician on Beale Street in Memphis, TN was documented in the Alabama PBS film Richard Johnston: Hill Country Troubadour. The film, directed by Max Shores, featured Johnston singing and playing his "Lowebow" cigar box guitar. It won first place in the professional documentary film category at the 2007 George Lindsey film festival. ~Wikipedia

Driving rhythms, bass and snare drum beaters, guitar licks that you can't describe as "licks", they're more like SLICKS..... "Miss Maebelle", sonofabitch, this song makes me nuts to hear it. This is the Real Thing, and long overdue as there ain't much "real" in the way of music these days.. Miss Maebelle don't let up on you. It keeps your heart poundin' away. I ain't one who goes in for dancin' much but this sound that he's got goin' makes me want to go get shnockered and make a complete ass of myself ....Makes you wanta lift yer leg and bring your foot down hard ,then do the other leg...Clap yer hands loud and holler, shake your head, beat it on the wall... It's Juke Joint Saturday Night music and will drive you wild if you ain't laid out somewhere at room temperature with your toe tagged . Even then, that toe would start tappin' if they piped FootHill Stomp into the morgue. Miss Maebelle leads you into the world of a crazed white boy who set out to learn the real ways of blues music and learn he did. Visualize Richard as the Hill Country Elvis on Sterno.
The songs on here have mostly been written by the masters of this style namely, Junior Kimbrough, Rainey Burnette, R.L. Burnside, Reverend Robert Wilkins, Jessie Mae Hemphill , and Do-Boy Diamond and arranged by Richard into an impressive collection of gems that will raise the hairs on your neck and get your feet pattin the floor at the lowest volume. At higher volumes you may fall out a window while flailing around the room so be real careful.
Richard did several numbers on here solo. I say solo but he's running Lowebows, resos, snares, bassdiddly, and bass drum (sometimes a washboard) all at once so technically I reckon you could call it "solo" but he's a band by himself on these. You can't tell it's one guy unless you've seen him play somewhere, even then ya can't believe what yer eyes and ears are tellin ya. There are some other cuts where he's got some help from these fine folks: Robert "Nighthawk" Tooms (harmonica), Mark Simpson (guitar), Tony Ray Adams (kick and snare, cuica and three tone whistle), Cedric Burnside (drums)
O....and there's also Mz Jessie Mae Hemphill, whose high , pretty voice is heard making calls of encouragement in the background at the end of the Robert Wilkin's classic, "That's no way to get along". She's also heard on the last song of this record which she and Richard co=wrote and perform together called "Chicken and Gravy". Thank you Mz. Hemphill for passin' it on. You sound just as sweet as sugar, or honey or a sweet tater pie!
If any of you out there had thoughts that blues music has gone dead again and there ain't nothin' new under the sun that's worth a shit, think again . There's a crop of people out there that are still doin' innovating things to the Blues, while keeping the essential flavor and drive that attracted us to this music and lifestyle in the first place. Do yourself a favor, get hold of this cd and you won't be worried about any foolish ideas that the Blues is goin' down again. ~Tweed's Blues Review

Bernard Allison (guitar, vocals) is the son of Luther Allison (1939-1997), who was famous for his rocking take on the blues, a style he originally honed backing up masters like Freddie King and Otis Rush; Cedric Burnside (guitar, vocals, drums) is the grandson of R. L. Burnside (1926-2005), whose extremely raw sound was influenced by John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters. Two great artists from two great musical families. Bernard and Cedric have been around the block and back again. This 2013 release is lightning hot. From the blues/rock genre of music, this is the first collaboration between the two artists and hopefully not the last.

Also features Trenton Ayers..guitar, Erick Ballard..drums, Vic Jackson..bass. Besides a batch of fresh original songs, the band interprets Ike & Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits," the classic "Going Down" by Don Nix as well as Willie Dixon's "Hidden Charms." You can hear the past influences in the music, not only from the masters but also from their own solo projects, North Mississippi Allstars, and a touch of funk and Cajun thrown in for good measure. There is not one weak song out of the 11 tunes. Great collaboration guys. ~To The Max Bax

John-Alex Mason, nationally and internationally renowned Blues artist, was taken from this world far too soon. Because John-Alex was loved and admired by not only his fans but his contemporaries. This project joins together music of a few artists who knew John-Alex. Each artist has contributed an original song to be included as a memorial to his memory.

Homeward Bound consists of a physical and digital album of 13 songs steeped in the Rootsy-Blues feel that John-Alex Mason ventured towards and delved in. The goal of this project is to raise funds for the pressing of the CD, posters and postage, then remaining funds will go to his surviving children. Another goal of this project is to shine a light on the life and music of John-Alex so the world can know him better and realize the beauty of his life and how it touched those who came in contact with him.

None of the musicians or artists are paid for their efforts, and everyone involved with this project is volunteering. The only money spent will be to press 1000 CD's or more if needed (let's hope for 10,000), plus posters and postage. All proceeds will go to a trust fund for John-Alex's two children.

North Mississippi drummer Cedric Burnside has been a known musician in the Holy Springs hill country area for some time now. At the age of 13 Cedric began touring worldwide with his grandfather blues legend and Hall of Famer R.L. Burnside as his drummer. Since founding The Cedric Burnside Project he has become a household name in the blues community.

Since the bands formation in 2006 the CBP hit the ground running winning Best Debut Artist at the 30th Blues Music Awards. In the nine year history of the CBP, Cedric has received four of the last five Best Instrumental Drummer Awards at the Blues Foundations Blues Music Awards. With the lineup now consisting of childhood friend and North Mississippi local Trenton Ayer, the CBP looks to reach new heights in not only the Blues community, but music in general. In 2013 the duo released the album “Hear Me When I Say” from which Cedric received his 4th Blues Music Award for his drumming. This year CBP released a follow up album titled “Descendants of Hill Country” in February of 2015 as it explores the progression of the Hill Country Blues.

After a successful year in 2014, including a performance at the Blues Music Awards where Cedric Burnside took home Best Instrumental Drummer, The Cedric Burnside Project are reaching for new heights in 2015 with a brand new album.

Cedric Burnside - 2 albums: Hear Me When I Say / Live At Tweed Recording EP

CEDRIC BURNSIDE, grandson of the legendary R.L. Burnside, son of drummer great Calvin Jackson, is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world. Growing up at his grandfather’s side, he began touring at age 13, playing drums for “Big Daddy” on stages around the globe. Cedric was born in 1978 and raised around Holly Springs, Miss., and has been playing music all his life, developing a relentless, highly rhythmic charged style with strong hip-hop and funk influences.

“I write about my life, my kids, and everyday things. I try to stick to the truth,” Cedric says. Just 29 years old, he recalls growing up without a radio or a TV. “My granddad used to play out on the porch, and we’d have house parties every weekend. Johnny Woods would come over and blow harmonica, and he’d drink two or three gallons of corn liquor. We just stomped up dirt.”

In addition to “Big Daddy,” Cedric has also played with, among countless others, Junior Kimbrough, Kenny Brown, North Mississippi Allstars, Burnside Exploration, Bobby Rush and Widespread Panic. In 2006 he was featured in the critically acclaimed feature film, Black Snake Moan, playing drums alongside Samuel L. Jackson. (The film is a tribute to R.L. Burnside, and gives many nods to the late bluesman.) Cedric has teamed up with guitarist Lightnin’ Malcolm and is proving to be a powerful vocalist and great songwriter. Cedric is a special talent that has brought new life and energy to the blues, and is loved by fans around the world.
