The Fieldstones are still revered in Memphis for providing some quality live blues in the 1980s, when such music was almost unknown in the city. Their 1983 album is reasonably fun, but not exceptional, modern electric blues with a more spontaneous feel than most of the discs coming out on higher-profile indie labels of the time; the guitar playing especially has a higher and lighter feel than the norm. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

The compilation illustrates the eclectic scope of Bluff City music, from Furry Lewis and Junior Kimbrough to Alex Chilton, Jim Dickinson and the Panther Burns. Memphis is about individualism, about distinct characters making “it” different. The best music out of Memphis — be it deep blues, early rocking Elvis, Stax soul, indie 1990s Grifters, or today’s Julien Baker or North Mississippi Allstars — forged its own sound. The Memphis aesthetic is to not sound like hits, but to sound different. Sometimes “different” hits. This soundtrack is a great companion to Memphis Rent Party, the latest book by Robert Gordon,

One of the few remnants of the homegrown Memphis blues scene since its virtual cessation at the end of the 1950s, the Fieldstones made some rough and ready electric blues with soul and rock influences from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s. Their sound was characterized by a two-guitar front line and a raw, chunky groove not too far removed from the sort of Mississippi juke joint blues that Fat Possum recorded in the 1990s. The Fieldstones did some recording in the 1980s for David Evans' Highwater label, but never established much of a following outside of Memphis, and disbanded in the early '90s.

The Fieldstones are something of a local legend in Memphis, and this, their second album, was a very long time coming. Its content was recorded at various times and in various places between 1981 and 1983, and the songs feature a shifting array of personnel. Lead vocals are handled alternately by Little Applewhite, Willie Roy Sanders, and drummer Joe Hicks; the constant core of the band consists of Hicks, bassist Lois Brown, and keyboardist Bobby Carnes. The Fieldstones' sound is raw but compelling, at least when someone other than Little Applewhite is singing -- he can't seem to carry a tune, which is especially obvious on the excruciating "Loving Blues." He does a bit better with "Hand Me Down My Shotgun," and songs like "Movin' Out" (which features Hicks' vocals) and the traditional "Cross Cut Saw" (featuring Willie Roy Sanders in a rough and heartfelt performance) work even better. The sound quality on these recordings is quite good, and the rawness of the material only enhances its emotional power. Recommended. ~Rick Anderson

Bobby Carnes - organ; Joe Hicks - drums; Little Applewhite - vocals; Lois Brown - bass guitar; Willie Roy Sanders - vocals, guitar; Wordie Perkins - guitar, piano.
