"Raw" is an overused and sometimes misapplied term of admiration, especially in the realm of the blues, where it is all too often used as a euphemism for "incompetent and off-key." In the case of Louisiana Red's Back to the Black Bayou, however, it's the only apt descriptor, and it's fully justified as a term of praise: his sound is ragged-edged and fiery, though its center is utterly solid and his delivery is unfailingly powerful.

Having lived in Germany since the early '80s, he went to neighboring Norway to record this album with producer and guitarist Little Victor, and even if the program leans heavily toward old and familiar material ("Ride on Red," "Too Poor to Die," "I Come from Louisiana"), he gives every track an almost shocking immediacy and energy; the subtle rhythmic shifts and adjustments on "Alabama Train" are handled with both grace and authority, "Roamin' Stranger" is given a powerfully grinding rendition, and the traditional gospel song "Don't Miss That Train" provides a nicely shuffling changeup in both lyrical theme and rhythm. But he is perhaps at his most impressive on "Sweet Leg Girl," a slow blues that shows just how much an expatriate bluesman with 60 years of experience can still do. /Rick Anderson, AllMusic

My good friend Harpdog Brown has a new CD out. He’s got a smokin’ band playing and he’s singing the real deal, old school blues just like you want to hear it. It’s easy to tell from listening that Harpdog knows what he’s doing and loves what he’s doing. I’m not applauding this CD just because I happen to have the honor of joining Harpdog on a tune…it really is some great smokin’ blues. Every tune is a winner. If you love the blues you won’t go wrong with this wonderful session. I LOVE the killer guitar playing! It’s hard to say what my favorite is but I gotta say I REALLY like Must’ve Been The Devil. I’ve always liked that tune and Harpdog does it great. I love his harp playing on this one especially. Home Is Where The Harp Is has a cool 8-bar blues groove and I love 8-bar blues progression. Fool Like Me, Hayward Boogie, Cloud Full Of Rain, Fine Little Girl, are all fine and For Better or Worse has especially good lyrics. What’s Your Name has some tasty first position harp playing. All in all I think you have a very satisfying album on your hands. I really enjoy listening to it again and again. The tune I did with Harpdog, Moose On The Loose, was a lot of fun. It’s got a good feel and good energy and I remember the fun we had recording it. Give it a listen. I hope hope you can hear the fun like I can. It was recorded the old school way…right off the floor….with fine old tube amps and the works…at Big Jon Atkinson’s studio, Bigtone in Hayward, CA. Jon knows how the blues are supposed to sound and he totally captured that sound with Harpdog and his great band. ~Charlie Musselwhite

A spicy mix of rarities, alternates and previously unissued R&B goodies from South Louisiana and S.E. Texas, where you are never too far from a bayou and some good rockin’ music. This 15th compilation in the “By The Bayou” series takes us back to the R&B sounds you would have heard belting out of a Louisiana juke joint on a steamy night in the 1950s or early 1960s. All of the tracks included were recorded in that party state, although some of the artists were based in Texas, crossing the state line to make music in studios based in Crowley and Lake Charles.

Amongst the rarities unveiled are three tracks cut in New Orleans but released by Flip Records of Hollywood, a label primarily known for doo wop. We also have some classic Classie Ballou, Chris Kenner’s first record, a few complete unknowns, a bunch of alternate takes and, most excitingly, two previously undocumented Barbara Lynn tracks, her first recordings.

Amongst the better-known songs are four formidable rockers: ‘Wild Cherry’ by Leroy Washington, ‘Roll Roll Roll’ by Guitar Jr, ‘Shoo, Shoo Chicken’ by Charles Sheffield and an alternate take of ‘Oh Babe’ by Lester Robertson.

Another killer release from this eccentric artist who carries on with help from Little Victor and his "Juke Joint". Little Victor's Juke Joint is a great backup band for Red, together enough to keep him in line and lowdown enough to show off Red's strengths. Highly recommended.
