Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88s have been the torchbearers of a great American blues musical heritage for three decades. Taking their inspiration from the great jump n' boogie outfits of the late 40s and early 50s, they breathe fresh life into the music that gave birth to rock n' roll. Woods styled his group after the jumpin' n' jivin', shoutin' n' honkin', pumpin' n' poundin' bands of Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris and more. Adding a healthy dose of New Orleans rhythm and blues, pile drivin' piano, and some of his own playful lyrics, Woods and His Rocket 88s forge their own brand of music they call rock-a-boogie. Born in Brooklyn in 1951, Woods began playing classical piano at eleven, and was putting together bands in Greenwich Village by his mid-teens.

He moved to San Francisco in 1970, and for the next five years performed as Mitch Woods and His Red Hot Mama (with singer Gracie Glassman). His next project, Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88s, started in 1980. Their first album, Steady Date (Blind Pig Records, 1984) got hot reviews and led to some prominent appearances. By 1987, Woods was doing a six-country European tour. In 2006, after spending more than twenty five years soaking up the New Orleans sound and performing with many of the Crescent City's musical elite, Woods realized his dream of recording with the founding fathers of New Orleans R&B. He received his first Blues Music Award nomination for Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year in 2007.

Happy Hour, Woods' fourteenth album, is a collection of his most popular original tunes, recorded at the legendary Greaseland Studios in San Jose, CA. At the helm was musical genius Christoffer "Kid" Andersen, who also joined on guitar, as the music emerged in a new light with fresh arrangements, capturing the joy that live music brings.

In 2017, the boogie-woogie pianist Mitch Woods released a swinging album of (mostly) duets with some of his pals and favorite blues-style players. Friends Along the Way featured the Bay Area musician playing and singing with such notables as Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, and John Lee Hooker. The 16-track record featured classics by Ma Rainey, Huddie (Lead Belly) Ledbetter, and Professor Longhair, as well as originals by Woods and his contemporaries, including Charlie Musselwhite and Ruthie Foster. Critics praised it then, but the record company that released it focused on other projects and did not promote the jam-packed 68-minute record.

Woods decided to repurchase the master tapes and release the music as a double disc with five additional tracks by artists who already appear previously (Cyril Neville, Kenny Neal, John Hammond, Maria Muldaur, and Joe Louis Walker). The five new tracks are fine, but the original 16 cuts make this Deluxe Edition worth hearing. Bringing these songs back into print is worthwhile in and of itself. This music has been living in purgatory for too long and deserves a broader audience.

Tommy “Blue Sky” McCoy has released his new CD, Coast to Coast Jump, and it is BMA bound. Green Swamp Records has submitted it to the Blues Music Awards for 2019. This is Tommy’s 9th CD and his best to date. “This is a modern jump blues record,” McCoy notes, “combining traditional elements of West coast jump with my contemporary songwriting, bare-bones production and minimalist combo interplay.”

Recorded at Greaseland Studio in San Jose with Kid Andersen who helped enlist an all-star lineup to record this most relevant album. The end result… a smart, well produced, original jump CD, featuring blues luminaries with performance off the charts. Start with Mitch Woods, piano extraordinaire, who put a touch of class on the ivories, followed with Jimmy Pugh blowin’ up the B3, as does Nancy Wright on the sax and McCoy’s unique guitar style. All 11 cuts are strong recordings, with first-rate performance, showcasing original McCoy compositions, all but one, a cover of Zappa’s iconic “Cosmik Debris” featuring Rick Estrin bringing the characters to life as he recites Frank’s storytelling dialog. “Guava Lava” is another dynamic track, slightly outside the box, bringing a Latin flavor into the mix, featuring sultry vocals by Lisa Andersen. Two songs were recorded in Florida with Tommy’s touring band “The FunDaMentals.” All songs exemplify the nature of experienced blues at its best, when performed by some of the top blues professionals in the world. Tommy McCoy has always maintained high standards and blues integrity with his entire catalog and spanning his incredible 50-year musical journey. Tommy had a top 10 hit song on the Blues charts with his tribute song to B.B. This will be his 10th year in a row and proceeds this year go to his Howland High School to build a recording studio.

While the album title is genuinely apt; I kind think it’s touch misleading too; as while New Yorker Mitch Woods and his Rocket 88 band do play in the style of Fats Domino on this scintillating ‘live set’, there’s also one helluva lot more to this band than just that being any type of covers band.
In fact what these Hep-cats remind me of more than anything else is the legendary Louis Jordan who begat the wonderful Jumpin’ Jive album that Joe Jackson recorded donkeys years ago.
Woods’ is everything you’d expect from a bandleader; ever the showman in his introductions and he has a monstrous voice which is just perfect for adding spice to old staples like Jambalaya, Walkin’ To New Orleans and Blue Monday; but it’s Woods’ own songs that really make this set come alive.
Opening track Solid Gold Cadillac is an absolute barnstormer and the swinging Mambo Mojo too are guaranteed to get even guys like me with two left feet onto the dancefloor.
This isn’t just for the dancers; as Mitch and Rocket 88 produce Good Time Music Deluxe that will have with Blues and Jazz aficionados drooling over some of the solos from these amazing players.
It’s not been easy choosing a Favourite Track as every time I play the album I just get drawn into the fun coming out of the speakers; the band’s signature tune Rocket 88 is as red hot a rocker as I’ve heard in years; but I’m going to pick their sizzling rendition of House of Blue Lights which is certainly a case of keeping the best ’til last!
What’s not to like? If this music doesn’t stir your soul, heart and most importantly feet then you don’t like music! ~The Rocking Magpie

Monica Dupont has the rare gift to reach the listener's soul with her deep, unique voice and her honest, *from the heart* song-delivery. The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise is one of those excursions on which a batch of musicians are put on a cruise ship with their fans for a few days of playing on the high seas, which makes it an ideal occasion for a live album packed with guests. Joe Louis Walker, appearing with his regular backup band (Linwood Taylor on second guitar, Kevin Burton on keyboards, Henry Oden on bass, and Jeff Minnieweather on drums), welcomes 18 guests on these 11 tracks, most prominent among them Johnny Winter and Duke Robillard.

In fact, his interactions with such fellow guitarists are among the high points on the disc. Walker revisits his own repertoire, dating back to his debut album, Cold Is the Night ("Ten More Shows to Play") and its follow-up, The Gift ("747"), along with tracks from his last couple of records. His is an electric blues sound that, while rooted in tradition, also came along after such blues-rock acts as the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream, and there are occasional echoes of that style. It may be that, given the circumstances, the players were inclined to let themselves go a bit more than usual; after all, nobody had to worry about driving home.

In any case, the arrangements can be stretched out to the point of being a little loose and ragged, and the singing, while enthusiastic, can be too. Most of that singing is done by Walker himself, and it's possible that he makes a point in a sleeve note of saying the album has no overdubs or fixes as a way of explaining the occasional croakiness in his voice. Such imperfections are more than offset, however, by the enthusiasm with which everybody plays. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

This is swing revival, boogie-woogie, jump, big band, and the blues all rolled into one satisfying serving. This album, Jump for Joy, recorded by Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88's, is hip-rolling, feet-moving joy for the ears. In fact, the title is a name the artist felt fit the style of music he was offering here, and fans have agreed with him. Longtime singer/songwriter and pianist Mitch Woods brought not only his band, the Rocket 88's, in on this recording, but also a number of other musicians, including saxophonists Danny Bittker, Michael Peloquin, and Jeff Ervin, trumpeters Tim Hyland and Mike Whitwell, and trombonist Mike Rinta. They actually finished this album three years before it was finally released to the public. This album is probably one of the best works Woods has put together in a while, if not the best altogether. Singer/pianist Mitch Woods, in addition to playing and recording with his regular band, the Rocket 88s, has devoted some of his discs to tributes to his blues, jump blues, and boogie-woogie heroes, particularly Keeper of the Flame, which features John Lee Hooker and James Cotton. Big Easy Boogie, as its name suggests, is Woods' salute to the music of New Orleans. The audio portion is a studio recording made in November 2000 that finds him fronting a band of New Orleans all-stars including such septuagenarian veterans as drummer Earl Palmer and saxophonist Herb Hardesty, with Dave Bartholomew, known as Fats Domino's co-writer/producer, producing and playing trumpet. Appropriately, Woods' songs are in a second-line New Orleans style, and the band plays them that way. This live CD/DVD combo was recorded at the Efes Blues Festival in Turkey in 2010 and shows Mitch Woods and his band in top form. This time the Rocket 88s include sax man Amadee Castenell from Allen Toussaint's band, John Cleary associate Cornell Williams on bass, Rhythmtown Jive guitarist Adam Gabriel, and legendary Oakland drummer Larry Vann (Elvin Bishop, Charles Brown, Merl Saunders). The band roars through a collection of Woods classics and carefully selected covers, many of them with a New Orleans flavor. Woods gives every member of his team a chance to shine, and keeps things moving along at a brisk pace. The jumpin' jive of "Down Boy Down" suggests a late-night juke joint with its exuberant energy. "Long, Lean & Lanky" brings to mind an unheard track from a Specialty Records session in the '50s, and allows Woods to show off his improvisational chops and Elvis imitation. "Mojo Mambo" dips beep into New Orleans funk and features Vann's syncopated second-line timekeeping. The keystone track is a medley that combines the Professor Longhair standard "In the Night" with "Lambaya Puf De," a hit by the late Barış Manço, Turkey's biggest rock star. Woods opens with a straightforward reading of the Longhair tune featuring Castenell's lyrical improvisations, bluesy guitar from Gabriel, a funky bass solo from Williams, and Vann's extended drum solo. When they shift into "Lambaya Puf De" the crowd goes wild. Gabriel sings the lyric in his best Turkish and adds some tasty Turkish-influenced fills to the arrangement. The DVD shows footage of the same set that's on the CD, interspersed with scenes of the band on the road. Woods narrates and marvels about the warmth and hospitality of the Turkish people. It's interesting to see the crowd's reaction to the band's version of "Lambaya Puf De" and to note how young and Western the crowd is. The extras include more home movie-style footage of the band visiting the sights, eating in restaurants, and folk dancing with other customers. There's a profile of the Turkish road crew and a slide show of photos taken by bandmembers. It's all pleasantly interesting, but the real attraction is the music Woods and the band lay down and the living proof of the old cliché that music really is a universal language. ~j. poet

Mitch Woods returns to the Crescent City to record this follow-up to his rollicking 2006 effort Big Easy Boogie. The guest list is a bit less impressive this time, but he does manage to rope in saxmen Amadee Castenell and Brian Cayolle from Allen Toussaint's band, Herb Hardesty from Fats Domino's group, Dr. John's guitarist John Fohl, Bonerama drummer Eric Bolivar, and bass player Cornell Williams from Jon Cleary's outfit. The set list concentrates on numbers made popular, at least down in New Orleans, by jump blues belter Smiley Lewis. Lewis started singing in Dixieland and jump blues combos before making the transition to the new music called rock & roll. Woods also made his rep playing jump, swing, and boogie, so dusting off Smiley's hits makes perfect sense. The album opens with the title track. Fohl supplies some clanging early R&B guitar, the saxmen wail, and Woods lays down a cheeky vocal and his usual exemplary boogie-woogie piano. The groove-heavy "Lil' Liza Jane" gets a romping workout with horn work that brings to mind the yackety sax of King Curtis. Woods takes on "Blue Monday," eschewing Fats Domino's arrangement with a jazzy solo by Fohl. The band blazes through "Can't Stop It," "Shame, Shame, Shame," and "Bumpity Bump." They add a salacious bump-and-grind vibe to "Big Mamou" and slow down "I Hear You Knockin'" to make it sound even more hopeless than Smiley's original. Like Big Easy Boogie, Gumbo Blues is a romp from start to finish. ~j. poet

I just received the newest release, Jammin' On The High C's from Mitch Woods' Club 88 recorded live on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise and the talent was really flowing. Opening with Big Mamou, Woods, along with members of Roomful of Blues lays down a full tilt boogie. An excellent trumpet, sax and piano solos on this track make it an excellent opener. Next up is Tain't Nobody's Bizness with a stripped down swing. Victor Wainwright and Julia Magness join in giving a different feel vocally... and great piano work contribute to an excellent track. Classic rocker, Rip It Up features Tommy Castro and he really adds some great rockin' guitar riffs to Woods' piano and vocal talents. Backed by the Roomful of Blues horns this track rocks. Lucky Peterson is featured on vocals on Bright Lights Big City, maintaining much of Jimmy Reeds original feel. Breakin down with a little Zydeco, Dwayne Dopsie brings Jambalaya on accordion and vocal. Woods tickles the ivories adding a real nice touch. Billy Branch brings it on Eyesight To The Blind. A lot of real Chicago feel and great harp work are the key to this track. Nicely executed guitar additions and Woods on piano add to the overall blue feel. Boogie track, I Want You To Be My Baby features Popa Chubby on vocal. Woods does an excellent job of driving the boogie and soloing. Popa throws down some wicked rockabilly riffs on guitar making this track shine bright. Coco Montoya takes the lead on Rock Me Baby which has a bit more of a rock swing/boogie feel. He soloing is intermixed with Woods piano work and crisp. Victor Wainwright is back for a real doozie of a boogie, Wine Spo Dee O Dee. This is easily the shining piano track on the release. Woods holds tight on Broke as he sings the story and pushes the rhythm on piano. With audience participation, this track is a lot of fun. Branch and Montoya are back on Boom Boom. A more laid back swing than the Hook wrote it, Woods keeps the rhythm as Branch and Montoya solo. Popa Chubby is back on Wee Wee Hours and a nice easy boogie. Woods takes a particularly nice piano solo on this track giving way to Popa for a plucky guitar solo of his own. Wrapping the release is a hot, fast paced boogie, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On featuring Dwayne Dopsie. Cool closer for a fun party release. ~bman

While he was growing up in Brooklyn, he studied both jazz and classical music, but when he relocated to the Bay Area, he primarily played jump blues and R&B. San Franciscan guitarist HiTide Harris introduced Woods to the joyous jive of Louis Jordan, and the pianist's musical tastes were transformed. Between 1970 and 1980, Woods performed as a solo artist, gigging at a number of local clubs. In 1980, he formed the Rocket 88s, featuring Harris on guitar, and four years later, the band released their debut album, Steady Date, on Blind Pig. The album led to concerts at national blues clubs and festivals, as well as several European dates in 1987. In 1988, Woods and the Rocket 88s released their second album, Mr. Boogie's Back in Town, and embarked on another round of shows in America, Canada, and Europe. Three years later, their third album, Solid Gold Cadillac, appeared. Woods and the Rocket 88s continued to tour and perform in the '90s, releasing their fourth album, Shakin' the Shack, in 1993.
