He was beloved worldwide as the king of the endless boogie, a genuine blues superstar whose droning, hypnotic one-chord grooves were at once both ultra-primitive and timeless. But John Lee Hooker recorded in a great many more styles than that over a career that stretched across more than half a century.

"The Hook" was a Mississippi native who became the top gent on the Detroit blues circuit in the years following World War II. The seeds for his eerily mournful guitar sound were planted by his stepfather, Will Moore, while Hooker was in his teens. Hooker had been singing spirituals before that, but the blues took hold and simply wouldn't let go. Overnight visitors left their mark on the youth, too: legends like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, and Blind Blake, who all knew Moore. ~by Bill Dahl

Perry's songs follow blues conventions, but twist them slightly, making them sound fresh and exciting. Furthermore, his playing is filled with unexpected turns, as he throws in jazz, folk and rock flourishes to his blistering solos. With its selection of great songs and great playing, Greycourt Lightning proves that Perry's debut, Love Scars, was no fluke.

The Milk Men is a band made up from the cream of British R’n’B talent and pedigree.

Bringing together members of the legendary Pirates, and British Blues Award-nominated the Mustangs, The Milk Men have been tearing up venues and festivals all over the UK with their dynamic, white hot versions of classic blues tunes, alongside unforgettable foot-stomping originals.

With former Pirate Mike Roberts on drums, Lloyd Green (son of Pirate legend Mick Green) on bass guitar, husky blues singer Jamie Smy on vocals, the band is rounded off on guitar by Adam Norsworthy, singer and guitarist in the Mustangs.

The Milk Men’s sound has been called ‘ZZ/DC Feelgood” by some critics, who have lavished praise on the band’s dynamic live show and original songs. But the band draws its influences from all corners of the blues world, from early Rod Stewart , through classic Rolling Stones & Steely Dan, to the heavier blues leanings of ZZ Top and AC/DC.

In 2016 the band released its critically-acclaimed debut album FULL PHAT. Their brilliant second album GOLD TOP was released in March 2018.

Both albums showcase the joint songwriting talents of best friends Norsworthy and Smy, who have grown up together since age 11, as well as the lithe, tight and punchy rhythm playing of Roberts and Green. Songs such as ‘Real Good Looking’, ‘Tambourine’ and ‘She Don’t Like Rock’n’Roll’ sit comfortably alongside barnstorming versions of ‘Dust My Broom and ‘Give Me Back My Wig’.

GOLD TOP features 'This Is The Last Time', a long-lost song co-written by Lloyd Green and his father Mick Green.

A California-based blues bandleader, harmonica player, and singer, Rod Piazza's stratospheric harmonica wailings owe a heavy debt to both Little Walter and George "Harmonica" Smith. Piazza began his professional career as a member of the Dirty Blues Band in the mid-'60s. The Dirty Blues Band recorded two albums for ABC/Bluesway - an eponymous debut in 1967 and 1968's Stone Dirty. Piazza left the band after the release of Stone Dirty, choosing to hit the road with his idol George "Harmonica" Smith instead.

Over the next decade and a half, Piazza and Smith performed together frequently under the name Bacon Fat; they also recorded the occasional album. In 1969, Bacon Fat released their eponymous debut album on Blue Horizon. While he was performing with Smith, Piazza released his own solo albums, the first of which - Rod Piazza Blues Man - appeared on LMI in 1973. The second, Chicago Flying Saucer Band, was released in 1979 on Gangster Records.

As Smith's health began to decline in the early '80s, Piazza assembled the Mighty Flyers - with his wife Honey Alexander on keyboards - which began playing clubs in 1980. Between 1981 and 1985, the Mighty Flyers released three albums: Radioactive Material (1981), File Under Rock (1984), and From the Start to the Finish (1985). During the early '80s, Piazza became a session musician, working with artists as diverse as Pee Wee Crayton and Michelle Shocked.

In the mid-'80s, he began a full-fledged solo career, releasing Harpburn on Murray Brothers in 1986 and So Glad to Have the Blues in 1988. Piazza & the Mighty Flyers signed a contract with Black Top Records in 1991; the label later re-released the group's albums on CD. Throughout the '90s, Piazza continued to record and perform with the Mighty Flyers, releasing the occasional solo album, like 1999's Here and Now. Beyond the Source appeared in 2001.

Three years later the Mighty Flyers returned with Keepin' It Real on the Blind Pig label, featuring two new members, Paul Fasulo on drums and guitarist Henry Carvajal. The next four albums were released by Delta Groove Records: For the Chosen Who in 2005, Thrillville in 2007, Soul Monster in 2009, and Almighty Dollar in 2011. In 2014, Piazza & the Mighty Flyers returned to Blind Pig with the album Emergency Situation. /Biography by Cub Koda, AllMusic

Little Walter Jacobs was blues harmonica player, singer, songwriter and occasional guitarist who revolutionised the way that the harmonica was played and recorded, bringing a new dimension to the blues during the 1950s. He was one of the first artists to amplify his harmonica by holding it to a microphone and maybe the first artist on any instrument deliberately to use electronic distortion as part of his range of sounds.

He was a member of Muddy Waters band, appearing on many of his records during the 1950s, but from 1952 recorded for the Chess subsidiary Checker, his releases regularly featuring a harmonica-led instrumental on one side and a vocal performance on the others. He scored an R&B No. 1 with his first solo single Juke, and another one a few years later with what became a staple of blues bands the world over My Babe. Little Walter became the only harmonica player to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame.

Although he has been a fixture on the Texas blues scene for decades, working with Albert Collins and others, and recorded several singles under his own name for independent labels in the 1950s, as well as appearing on three albums with Joe "Guitar" Hughes in the 1980s, Texas Doghouse Blues is Earl Gilliam's first album as a bandleader. It has all been worth the wait, as Gilliam, working closely with former Duke-Peacock session guitarist I.J. Gosey, has turned in a charming, loose set of jazzy blues shuffles that sound like they could have been recorded at a Sunday afternoon barbecue.

Gilliam's voice isn't a strong one (although his shaky, fragile delivery is oddly affecting), and his lyrics tend to fall to the "party all the time" side of blues cliché, but the point here isn't his singing or his writing, but his playing, and Gilliam is simply one of the best blues organists on the planet, with a strong, driving piano style as well. At his best, Gilliam sounds like an overdriven Jimmy Smith, with Gosey's jazzy guitar lines and Shedrick Cormier's tenor sax pushing tracks like "Twist 2" into soul-jazz territory, and when Gilliam and company layer in some grease and funk, as they do on the set closer, "Tomball Shuffle," the result is irresistible.

One of the standout cuts here is "Thrill Groove," which reworks B.B. King's signature "The Thrill Is Gone" into a wonderful slice of jazz-inflected blues. The groove is obviously the thing here, and with a solid rhythm section of Pops Stewart on bass, Willie Sampson on drums, and John Richardson on second guitar, Gilliam and Gosey are able to work the middle ground between hard dance blues and shuffle jazz with ease, and the joy the players take in all this is readily apparent. Texas Doghouse Blues is a charming delight, perfect for a long, hot summer afternoon gathered around the grill. /Steve Leggett, AllMusic

Piazza grew up in Southern California, where he studied blues records and perfected his harmonica work. He originally started on guitar, an instrument he began playing at the age of six or seven. In the mid 1960s, Piazza formed his first band The House of DBS, which later changed its name to the Dirty Blues Band. The band signed with ABC-Bluesway and released two albums in 1967 and 1968.

The band broke up in 1968, and Piazza formed Bacon Fat that year. Piazza's idol and mentor, George "Harmonica" Smith joined the band and they had a "dual harp" sound. Bacon Fat released two albums the following two years. Piazza left and worked in other bands before going solo in 1974.

He formed the Chicago Flying Saucer Band the following year, which later evolved into the Mighty Flyers. The band recorded their first album in 1980. Piazza started touring and recording as Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers Blues Quartet, after the departure of long-time bassist Bill Stuve in the early 2000s.

Piazza has recorded twenty-four studio albums between 1967 and 2009, including the live concert DVD Big Blues Party in 2005 (recorded at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, California). In addition, he has appeared as a guest performer on more than twenty-one releases since 1968. /Wikipedia

12. C.C. Rider (4:47)

The line of innovative New Orleans piano players who serve as conduits for fusing genres is continued with this release by Henry Butler. Here he approaches his music for the first time primarily as a blues performer, rather than as a jazz musician playing blues. He is an extraordinary performer who has put together all the years of growing up in the Crescent City, with its diverse musical heritage, his training in piano and voice from the Louisiana State School for the Blind, his continued musical education at Southern University, and the post-graduate work in voice (singing German lieder) at Michigan State, and fused it into one cohesive whole.

All the flavors are there and distinct when you look for them, but put together they form a cohesive whole that provokes more thought than the individual parts would. Listen to his terrifying vocals and the support his piano provides for them on his version of "Death Has No Mercy." The tune has always had a chill, but he puts it into another realm that brings up vivid images of the Angels of Death swooping on down. He is joined on several cuts by Snooks Eaglin on guitar and Mark Kazanoff on harmonica, who provide an empathetic support that enhances and helps carry these tunes to further reaches.

On "Tetherball," he and Kazanoff play off each other, whirl around each other in an orbit that at times stretches way out there before coming back to this plane at the end of the song, just as the ball rolls up tight against the pole. Henry Butler does it all on this superlative disc - he co-produced it, wrote eight of the 12 songs, did all of the arranging, and provided vocals and piano. This is a disc that should not be missed at any cost. /Bob Gottlieb, AllMusic

Despite the indifference of mainstream media in New Zealand, Harvey is an irrepressible character who just keeps doing it. His duo and current band — himself, longtime pal Abbott, drummer Neil Stewart and the legendary ‘Strayfalcon’ — play often enough to keep sharp, Harvey travels to the States when he can afford it and has a longtime passionate association with Native Americans. (Graham Reid, Elsewhere)

Gary Harvey is a singer songwriter based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Through his various bands an now performing mainly as an acoustic duo, Gary has become known for his strong blues roots, steeped in the sounds emanating along Highway 61 and inspired musically by both American and British blues rock music. In an interview, he cited some of the bands that had been his biggest influence, which included John Mayal, Free, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Joe Bonamassa,The Foo Fighters, Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

His bands have always had a strong presence in the live music scene, with numerous festivals, tours and TV appearances, he remains active recording and producing new material. The last release with the Gary Harvey Band, Ghost Dance has been critically acclaimed and is available on iTunes and Spotify. Currently For What Its Worth remains his most commercially successful album.

From the indo-psychedelic rock of Mr Healy, this band can do head-down barroom boogie with the best (Nuthin’ But the Blues) and deliver mainstream, angry urban hard rock (Tired of Thinkin’, Boss Mama) for the car radio on a straight strip of road. (Graham Reid, Elsewhere)

The current band comprises Gary Harvey (Vocals/Bass), Tony Abbott (Vocals/Guitar), ‘Strayfalcon’ (Vocals/Guitar) & Neil Stewart (Drums).

Albert King is truly a "King of the Blues," although he doesn't hold that title (B.B. does). Along with B.B. and Freddie King, Albert King is one of the major influences on blues and rock guitar players. Without him, modern guitar music would not sound as it does -- his style has influenced both black and white blues players from Otis Rush and Robert Cray to Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's important to note that while almost all modern blues guitarists seldom play for long without falling into a B.B. King guitar cliché, Albert King never does -- he's had his own style and unique tone from the beginning.

Albert King plays guitar left-handed, without re-stringing the guitar from the right-handed setup; this "upside-down" playing accounts for his difference in tone, since he pulls down on the same strings that most players push up on when bending the blues notes. King's massive tone and totally unique way of squeezing bends out of a guitar string has had a major impact. Many young white guitarists -- especially rock & rollers -- have been influenced by King's playing, and many players who emulate his style may never have heard of Albert King, let alone heard his music. His style is immediately distinguishable from all other blues guitarists, and he's one of the most important blues guitarists to ever pick up the electric guitar.

Born in Indianola, MS, but raised in Forrest City, AR, Albert King (born Albert Nelson) taught himself how to play guitar when he was a child, building his own instrument out of a cigar box. At first, he played with gospel groups -- most notably the Harmony Kings -- but after hearing Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, and several other blues musicians, he solely played the blues. In 1950, he met MC Reeder, who owned the T-99 nightclub in Osceola, AR. King moved to Osceola shortly afterward, joining the T-99's house band, the In the Groove Boys. The band played several local Arkansas gigs besides the T-99, including several shows for a local radio station.

After enjoying success in the Arkansas area, King moved to Gary, IN, in 1953, where he joined a band that also featured Jimmy Reed and John Brim. Both Reed and Brim were guitarists, which forced King to play drums in the group. At this time, he adopted the name Albert King, which he assumed after B.B. King's "Three O'Clock Blues" became a huge hit. Albert met Willie Dixon shortly after moving to Gary, and the bassist/songwriter helped the guitarist set up an audition at Parrot Records. King passed the audition and cut his first session late in 1953. Five songs were recorded during the session and only one single, "Be on Your Merry Way" / "Bad Luck Blues," was released; the other tracks appeared on various compilations over the next four decades. Although it sold respectably, the single didn't gather enough attention to earn him another session with Parrot. In early 1954, King returned to Osceola and re-joined theIn the Groove Boys; he stayed in Arkansas for the next two years.

In 1956, Albert moved to St. Louis, where he initially sat in with local bands. By the fall of 1956, King was headlining several clubs in the area. King continued to play the St. Louis circuit, honing his style. During these years, he began playing his signature Gibson Flying V, which he named Lucy. By 1958, Albert was quite popular in St. Louis, which led to a contract with the fledgling Bobbin Records in the summer of 1959. On his first Bobbin recordings, King recorded with a pianist and a small horn section, which made the music sound closer to jump blues than Delta or Chicago blues. Nevertheless, his guitar was taking a center stage and it was clear that he had developed a unique, forceful sound. King's records for Bobbin sold well in the St. Louis area, enough so that King Records leased the "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong" single from the smaller label. When the single was released nationally late in 1961, it became a hit, reaching number 14 on the R&B charts. King Records continued to lease more material from Bobbin -- including a full album, Big Blues, which was released in 1963 -- but nothing else approached the initial success of "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong." Bobbin also leased material to Chess, which appeared in the late '60s.

Albert King left Bobbin in late 1962 and recorded one session for King Records in the spring of 1963, which were much more pop-oriented than his previous work; the singles issued from the session failed to sell. Within a year, he cut four songs for the local St. Louis independent label Coun-Tree, which was run by a jazz singer named Leo Gooden. Though these singles didn't appear in many cities -- St. Louis, Chicago, and Kansas City were the only three to register sales -- they foreshadowed his coming work with Stax Records. Furthermore, they were very popular within St. Louis, so much so that Gooden resented King's success and pushed him off the label.

Following his stint at Coun-Tree, Albert King signed with Stax Records in 1966. Albert's records for Stax would bring him stardom, both within blues and rock circles. All of his '60s Stax sides were recorded with the label's house band, Booker T. & the MG's, which gave his blues a sleek, soulful sound. That soul underpinning gave King crossover appeal, as evidenced by his R&B chart hits -- "Laundromat Blues" (1966) and "Cross Cut Saw" (1967) both went Top 40, while "Born Under a Bad Sign" (1967) charted in the Top 50. Furthermore, King's style was appropriated by several rock & roll players, most notably Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, who copied Albert's "Personal Manager" guitar solo on the Cream song, "Strange Brew." Albert King's first album for Stax, 1967's Born Under a Bad Sign, was a collection of his singles for the label and became one of the most popular and influential blues albums of the late '60s. Beginning in 1968, Albert King was playing not only to blues audiences, but also to crowds of young rock & rollers. He frequently played at the Fillmore West in San Francisco and he even recorded an album, Live Wire/Blues Power, at the hall in the summer of 1968.

Early in 1969, King recorded Years Gone By, his first true studio album. Later that year, he recorded a tribute album to Elvis Presley (Blues for Elvis: Albert King Does the King's Things) and a jam session with Steve Cropper and Pops Staples (Jammed Together), in addition to performing a concert with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. For the next few years, Albert toured America and Europe, returning to the studio in 1971, to record the Lovejoy album. In 1972, he recorded I'll Play the Blues for You, which featured accompaniment from the Bar-Kays, the Memphis Horns, and the Movement. The album was rooted in the blues, but featured distinctively modern soul and funk overtones.

By the mid-'70s, Stax was suffering major financial problems, so King left the label for Utopia, a small subsidiary of RCA Records. Albert released two albums on Utopia, which featured some concessions to the constraints of commercial soul productions. Although he had a few hits at Utopia, his time there was essentially a transitional period, where he discovered that it was better to follow a straight blues direction and abandon contemporary soul crossovers. King's subtle shift in style was evident on his first albums for Tomato Records, the label he signed with in 1978. Albert stayed at Tomato for several years, switching to Fantasy in 1983, releasing two albums for the label.

In the mid-'80s, Albert King announced his retirement, but it was short-lived -- Albert continued to regularly play concerts and festivals throughout America and Europe for the rest of the decade. King continued to perform until his sudden death in 1992, when he suffered a fatal heart attack on December 21. The loss to the blues was a major one -- although many guitarists have tried, no one can replace King's distinctive, trailblazing style. Albert King is a tough act to follow. ~by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

San Diego’s Sue Palmer is a pianist known to the world as the Queen of Boogie Woogie, and throughout the 20 selections on her dealer’s choice anthology, Gems Volume One, we find the sobriquet is hers alone to wear. A constant and vital presence on the local music scene for 30 years plus, Palmer’s energized style of of blues, swing, and jazz has delighted fans with keyboard work that is a wonder of rhythm and delicacy, two-fisted swagger and moaning blues holler, straight ahead improvisation and sweet doses of country and torch songs to make the evening’s entertainment a diverse delight. These tracks are choices Palmer has selected from the 20 albums she has recorded since 1980, recorded with a broad array of superlative musicians including Rob Thorsen, Candye Kane, April West, Gilbert Castellanos, and a slate of other players who add their distinct personalities to Palmer’s dedication to swing, stop and boogie.

There is a mad stride boogie mania of the opening track “Down the Road a Piece,” with Palmer’s left hand maintaining a rock steady baseline on the keyboard, and the right hand irresistibly trilling, riffing, and gliding along over the changes. Simple and elegant, against a backbeat of drums and bass that will not let up until Ms.Palmer says it is. Johnny Viau takes a fine honking saxophone solo, growing, wailing, gruff in all the right ways. What makes Gems so engaging is that the tracks and styles catch you by surprise as they play through; more than a revivalist, more than curator, Palmer and her bandmates are practitioners of the diversity of the aforementioned blues, swing, and boogie styles, and will, at times, throw you a left curve that delights gloriously. In this case, it’s the rousing gospel of “I’ve Been Walking,” with a soul-stirring vocal by the irrepressible Missy Anderson, a pumped-up band creating waves, a solid rhythm and fleet beat for Palmer’s thick, rich chord work and percussive phrasing.

Blues, boogie, and swing, the core of Palmer’s musical soul, are a music often associated with the woes of the road, with hard travelling and the search for a place to rest, if only brief. Perhaps coincidently, two very fine tracks involve hospitality, hotel, and motel, first with a sly rendition of the chestnut “Heartbreak Hotel.” Skewing closer to the Big Mama Thorton original than the classic Presley version, the song combines the laconic fatalism of a good country ballad and the mourning minimalism of the most despairing, dead end blues. A bit later, we drive past the track “Motel Mambo,” a lament, a confession, a tell-all in lithe mambo syncopation. Deejha Marie’s sexy, casually jaded vocal outlines the characters and their storied comings and goings. Gilbert Castellanos takes a scintillating trumpet break, fast tonguing and rattling trills that give this song a short and inspired moment of scorch, taking full advantage of Palmer’s rattling piano work. All told, Gems, Volume One is a 20-course meal, the work of a fine musician dedicated to the genius of the blues. Blues, swing, blues, country, gospel, it’s all here, a diverting collection of what Sue Palmer considers her best work since 1980. This is volume one? More, please, and soon. ~by Ted Burke

08. 3.44 In The Morning (4:42)
09. Through My Veins (5:38)

‘Packing My Bags’ is that rare thing, a blues related album that pushes the stylistic envelope while still making an essential emotional connection.

Errol Linton has long carved out his own niche in the roots and blues field, but this is his best produced and most disciplined album.

He is as happy playing blues as he is reggae, singing ballads or leaning into deep shuffles. His warm vocal and expressive harp gives him the rudimentary tools with which to explore his unique blues vibe, but he also has a wonderful band who lock into the grooves with some exhilarating interplay. They are at their best on the deep blues of ‘Through My Veins’, which closes the album with a wonderful exercise in restraint.

The key to the album’s success is the band’s use of space and time. They strike a perfect balance between beautiful tone colour and intricate dynamics, before shining their collective light on a unique take on the blues.

Errol Linton has made his name as an esteemed harp playing a unique version of reggae and blues. But on the evidence of this album that’s a lazy description as his music digs far deeper. He’s best described as a cross genre bluesman player who brings variety to his vocals to his vocals as he slips from warm close-to-the-mic excursions into falsetto when required.

This is such a wide ranging album that when the band turn to the Chicago blues of ‘Hoodoo Man’ it feels like a ship coming into harbour after being tossed around on undulating waves. And having explored some exciting highs the band comes back to Chicago blues – their spiritual musical home – to re-ignite a favourite Junior Wells track.

Errol makes an immediate impact with his superb harp playing on the opening cover of Snooky Pryor’s ‘Break ‘Em On Down’. He’s a feel player with a warm vocal and a tight band that gives him the platform to blow at his hearts content.

The album contains 6 self penned tracks (including 2 co-writes) and 3 covers, of which ‘Break ‘Em Down’ is the best. You’d be hard pushed to spot the join as they shape the material to their own end with a signature sound.

Linton is a British harp player with all the feel and poise of his American counterparts. He’s a mature player with a lived in feel and a band that supports him all the way.

‘Got Me Running’ could be a slice of British 60's R&B on a jump arrangement with a repeated harp riff and a vocal not too far removed from Canned Heat’s ‘Blind Owl Wilson’.

He further emphasizes the Latino beat of Billy Boy Arnold’s ‘I Wish You Would’. It may be a bit of an obvious cover, but the band transform it with their vim and vigour. Linton adds a warm vocal and expressive harp phasing, while Kenrick Rowe’s ebullient cymbal work rings out loud and clear on a song with plenty of stop-time moments and lots of space.

‘Packing My Bag’ is an album on which the harp takes precedence, and when guitarist Adam Blake solos on ‘I Wish You Would’, he’s short, sharp and to the point, as he revels in his role as an accompanist who supports the song.

Linton extends the R&B feel on the stop-time ‘Love Is Strong’ on which he indulges in some vocal and harp, call and response. He adds a solo with deep breaths leading to long drawn out notes and then the opposite, before the band coalesces superbly on a jumping double bass line.

The title track is the jewel in the crown. It’s a celebratory shuffle with a noticeably different vocal attack and a repeated reggae inflection that works perfectly and brings contrast as the number returns to its shuffle based anchor.

The band’s intricate interplay featuring pianist/co-producer Pete Zivkovic’s subtly voiced notes all perfectly illuminate the track, as Linton borrows Bob Marley’s ‘Concrete Jungle’ line.

Each track builds on its predecessor to give the set an essential flow as it rolls mellifluously towards an emotive finish.

Linton extends the reggae feel on ‘Drink Up Your Last Dollar’ which is a rock steady drinking song that is pleasant rather than essential, though it’s simplicity does envelope us before a somewhat perfunctory ending.

’3.44 In The Morning’ is another album highlight built on a funky backbeat, harp squals, crisp cymbal work and Errol’s faux falsetto.

It has an insistent funky rhythm underpinned by Lance Rose’s throbbing bass on a beautifully nuanced track. He vocal line also cleverly mimics the bass line that is keeping him awake at night.

The track straddles blues, reggae and funk to cleverly evoke the restless sleepy night of the lyrics and is a great example of contemporary urban blues without any hint of cliché. The tension breaking wah-wah sounding harp riff feels like a musical sculpture as the band teases out the deepest groove.

The beautifully crafted ‘Through My Veins’ provides a suitable counterbalance to the above and perfectly bookends an album that drips with feel and emotion.

Linton’s vocal on this ballad is closer to Nick Drake than any major blues artist, as the gentle accompaniment evokes the lyrics. He hovers over the gentlest of brush strokes and dappled paino notes, while adding his own gentle harp retorts. Its a lovely love song that expresses so much: “Through my veins is where you run.”

‘Packing My Bags’ comes close to being a masterpiece. It’s a mature piece of work that sparkles with subtle band interplay, an array of colourful tones and brief but significant solos. Then there’s Linton vocal, which draws the listener into an album you immediately want to play again. There can be no better recommendation than that. ****½ ~by Pete Feenstra

This set by the obscure yet legendary one-armed harmonica player and singer Big John Wrencher is one of the great overlooked blues classics of the 1970s. Recorded in England in 1975 (with two bonus tracks from 1974) with Eddie "Playboy" Taylor's band, the Blueshounds, it is the only recording in Wrencher's small catalog that begins to capture the intensity, soulfulness, and elegance of his live performances. Wrencher was a composer as well as an interpreter and arranger of great blues and R&B classics. The set begins with an amazing read of "Honeydripper" by Joe Liggins. Began as a simple blues shuffle, Wrencher's harmonica solo before the tune's main groove kicks in turns it into something else entirely -- a spine-loosening groover of the highest order. When he begins to sing in his clear, smooth baritone, the seams begin to split and the track bleeds blue all over the stereo. His arrangement of the traditional blues tune "Third Degree" is a nearly Famous Flames-styled funk tune with its choogling riff and pumped-up bass in the front of the mix. Wrencher's voice makes it really growl and shake, however. He doesn't ask questions when he sings; he shouts what he knows. Wrencher's own "Lonesome in My Cabin" is a spooky, minor-key blues that has the author's moaning, groaning vocal at its heart, and a repetitive piano riff shadowed by the electric guitar filling space along with Wrencher's harmonica. The four-to-the-floor boogie of "Come On Over," another Wrencher original, rolls, twists, and turns on his harmonica's woven lines, his huge, ringing voice moving into a guttural groove colored by Taylor's lead guitar. This is a Joe Turner-styled shouter, but Wrencher's voice makes it so immediate, so full of cracks and splinters, it's virtually alive. The bonus material recorded a year earlier is far from filler. While not recorded quite as wonderfully as the album, it has even more immediacy, feeling more like a live date -- hopefully there's more where this came from -- and it's all muddy, greasy, and funky. The album's final track, "I'm a Root Man," one of Wrencher's own, is a slow to mid-tempo blues with a call-and-response line that acts as nothing but a vehicle for the author's storytelling way of singing. It is sensual, raw, and full of the kind of otherworldly life listeners seldom hear in blues records anymore. This set is a treasure. Period. ~ by Thom Jurek

The Bennett Brothers have released their first independent album, “NOT MADE FOR HIRE”, with American Showplace Records.

Joining the Bennett Brothers on this compilation is John Ginty (Keyboards) fresh off The Dixie Chicks tour, and Lee Falco (Drums) fresh off Donald Fagan's "Nighfliers" tour. Both add stellar performances in a genuine band setting! Vocalist, Linda Pino swings in to contribute a slow and beautiful 12/8 blues piece.?

After years of making music together Brooklyn natives, the Bennett Brothers have had the honor of performing with legends Levon Helm, B.B. King, Bo Diddley among others. In recent years The Bennett Brothers have played on and contributed songs to two Bruce Katz releases. Jimmy appeared on three John Ginty releases. He contributed songs to and played on the new Sean Chambers record (American Showplace Music), as well.

Over the next few years Jimmy and Peter did a series of shows at Levon Helm's Rambles, ultimately being absorbed into the Alexis P. Suter Band, and performing over at 100 Rambles! Legends such as Garth Hudson Hubert Sumlin, Johnnie Johnson, Little Sammy Davis and Luther “Guitar” Johnson were all frequent guests. Great music grew from Levon’s vision, opening his house and heart to all of us. To this day, musical offshoots flourish from seeds planted at those early rambles.

There are two unreleased instrumentals included from 'Live at BB King's' sessions. As a direct descendent from George Harmonica Smith, no contemporary harp player of his time has amassed a catalogue of original instrumentals to compare with these recordings. This C.D. is a must for harp players anywhere or fans of harmonica blues.

Brother Yusef Performs Guitar, Vocal, Foot Stomp and Ankle Tambourine On All Tracks.

Brother Yusef’s music is exuberant, bouncing with a highly rhythmic beat and slippery with a wildly flailing slide; this Bakersfield born, dreadlocked bluesman chugs and stomps the blues with impassioned devotion. By combining "traditional" finger picking and slide guitar with the contemporary feel of urban blues, Brother Yusef gives the past and present equal rights on stage.
A stand-out talent.

"Worryin' Kind" was originally recorded as part of the "Bent Frets" album but wasn't needed in the final line up. As was "Only Make Believe" - a cover of the old Conway Twitty song, rocked up with some twangy Strat. "Stretch" from the "Crazy Blues" album has been completely remixed, and that annoying tinny vocal removed! That was a bad idea! Oh well. "It Don't Stop Rockin'" gets a cleaner remaster and "Lovin' Heart" gets a remix to bring the guitar out more. (Well I am a guitarist)!

One of the most amazing comeback stories of the modern blues era was ignited by this astonishing album. Robert Ward hadn't recorded as a leader in close to a quarter century, but his melismatic, almost mystical vocal quality and quirky, vibrato-enriched guitar sound utterly vital and electrifying as he revives some of his own obscure oldies ("Your Love Is Amazing," "Forgive Me Darling," "Strictly Reserved for You") and debuts a few new compositions for good measure. One of the classic blues/soul albums of the '90s. /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Big Joe Turner - San Francisco 1977 (2 CD)

Nicknamed "Boss of the Blues", "Big" Joe Turner's musical appeal spread well beyond his Kansas City roots: he was also a highly regarded jazz singer, as well as a musical godfather to every up and coming rock 'n' roll group worldwide. He was discovered in his native Kansas City in the 1930s by impresario and record producer extraordinaire John Hammond, who brought him to New York for a concert at Carnegie Hall as well as dates at some of New York's most prestigious clubs.

Invited by Duke Ellington to appear in his 1941 revue entitled "Jump For Joy", it opened the door to perform with legendary jazz musicians such as Art Tatum, Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and others. By the 1950s, Joe had signed with Atlantic Records where he ushered in the rock 'n' roll era, performing such classics as "Shake, Rattle and Roll", "Morning, Noon and Night", "TV Mama" (which featured the slick guitar work of Elmore James), "Chains of Love" and "Honey Hush (Hi Ho Silver)" among others.

This CD, recorded March 5, 1977 at the Palms Cafe in San Francisco, embodies all of Turner's considerable talents and offers 23 tracks on 2 discs.

Personnel: Joe Turner (vocals); Mike Bloomfield (guitar); Mark Naftalin (piano); Pat Campbell (bass); Bob Scott (drums); Unknown (saxophone).

8. Broken Man (8:07)
9. Big Shot (5:00)
10. Make It Rain (14:00)

"Broken Man" is the much-anticipated second album from British Blues Award winners Catfish. The album is blues with a very broad brush - from Matt's prog anthem "Broken Man" to Paul's stripped back, soulful ballad "Part as Strangers" featuring a wonderful harmonica solo from special guest Paul Jones. All tracks are originals bar one – their own epic take on Foy Vance's "Make it Rain".

Since breaking onto the blues scene in January 2015 with their debut album "So Many Roads" going straight to no 1 in the IBBA blues airplay charts, Catfish have carved a reputation for themselves as an excellent live band with a phenomenal front-man in 22 year old guitarist/vocalist Matt Long who plays with a real passion for the blues.

The strength of "Broken Man" lies in the song writing; the songs really stay with you, no mean feat for a debut originals album. "Broken Man" confirms the band as a serious contender in the field of original contemporary blues.

Walter 'Wolfman' Washington - Wolf At The Door

6. Heatin' It Up (4:24)
7. Tailspin (3:04)
8. At Night In The City (4:47)
9. Don't Say Goodbye (4:19)

Most of this CD from Walter "Wolfman" Washington puts the focus on his voice, which is reminiscent of a young Ray Charles. The horn arrangements look back toward 1960s Motown, and five of the six tracks fall squarely into the idiom of pre-disco R&B, with touches of funk and gospel. "Peepin'" is a bit of a surprise, a minor-toned instrumental with Tom Fitzpatrick's soprano in the lead and some nice George Benson-ish guitar by Washington. Even better are the last three tracks: the joyful blues "Tailspin," a minor blues ("At Night In the City"), and a bluesy ballad ("Don't Say Goodbye"). Wolfman Washington's versatility is quite impressive, making this a fairly memorable recording. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic

A true taste of the vocal skills of the Ambassador of the Blues, LA's Margie Evans, backed by The Mighty Reapers. It covers the range of her stage material - sweltering blues, sensual soul and funk, hip shaking R&B and two Gospel tracks that are sung straight from Margie's life experience. 11 of the 14 songs come from her pen, but that doesn't tell the whole story as she is a great improvising vocalist, and when she sings Gospel she testifies with great authority.
