A 1961 Chess album restored to digital print by MCA that's filled with 1951-1952 gems from the Hook's heyday. Chess originally bought "Mad Man Blues" and "Hey Boogie" from the Gone label; the rest first came out on Chess during Hooker's frenzied early days of recording, when his platters turned up on nearly every R&B indie label existant at the time. /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

12. Nothin' But The Truth, So Help Me John (4:58)

The brassy, 12-track Nothin' but the Truth is the first recording by this former Duke/Peacock sideman to see the light of day in more than 40 years. Now in his mid-seventies, Texas Johnny Brown remains one of the more immovable veterans dotting the inexplicably low-key Houston blues landscape. And this spirited collection plays up Brown's dual strengths as a songwriter and entertainer. The album features 11 originals, a few done up in stylish big band threads à la B.B. King -- the sort of simmering, sophisticated grooves that straddle the fence between juke-joint wailing and nightclub-slick rhythm & blues. The most memorable moments on Nothin' tend toward R&B's staunch reliance on structure, melody, and spot-on production values. The insistent toe-tappers "Your House, Your Home" and "Stand the Pain" and the keyboard-drenched "Blue and Lonesome" are easily among Brown's best. ~by Hobart Rowland

Recorded at Cowboy Jack Clement's studio in Nashville TN with JM Van Eaton (Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Riley) and The Jordanaires (Elvis Presley, Ringo Starr). Resulting album "Last Night In Nashville" released Sept. 2010. Performed in front of a few thousand at Westfest festival.

Formed in 2006, The Kingmakers are Ottawa's premier rockabilly, swing, jive, country rock and roll combo, pulling out all the stops to put on an amazing live show that appeals to all ages. Just like the early pioneers of rock and roll, the band fuses a mix of styles from hillbilly to swing to R&B, into high-energy music and an engaging stage show that became known as "rockabilly".

The band features Clark Lawlor (vocals), John Cormier (guitar), Stephen K. Donnelly (upright bass), and Anastasios Basiliadis (drums).

A huge fan of early SUN Records and the pioneers of rock and roll such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, in 2007 the band travelled to Memphis, Tennessee to visit Graceland, Beale St. and historic SUN Studio. At the end of the tour of SUN Studio, while the other tourists were being escorted out, The Kingmakers took out their instruments, plugged in, and began a one-night session with engineer James Lott. The result is a raw, "live off the floor" recording much like the greats would have made back in the mid-fifties. This session was released as the band's first CD, "Live at SUN Studio".

Not content to rest on their laurels, the band started work almost immediately on the follow-up. Working in their own studio, "Tupelo To Memphis" was recorded in the fall and winter of 2008 and released in 2009. Featuring 15 originals, the CD showcases the band's writing, bringing a fresh sound to a vintage style. The album received great reviews from fans and in the press.

In 2010 The Kingmakers released their third album, "Last Night In Nashville", recorded in Nashville TN at Cowboy Jack Clement's studio, with a little help from The Jordanaires and JM Van Eaton.

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Johnnie Bassett grew up with blues music all around him in his native Florida. His unique ability to combine jump blues and Delta stylings gave his playing a distinctive sound. The self-taught guitarist recalled seeing Tampa Red, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, and other classic blues artists at fish fries in his grandmother's backyard. Bassett cited Aaron "T-Bone" Walker as a major influence, as well as B.B. and Albert King, Tiny Grimes, and Billy Butler.

After Bassett's family moved to Detroit in 1944, he made his debut as a guitarist with Joe Weaver & the Bluenotes, a teenage R&B band. The group won local talent contests and was hired to back up Big Joe Turner, Ruth Brown, and others on their tour stops in Detroit. Bassett went into the Army in 1958 and played in a country & western group while stationed in Washington state.

After returning to Detroit, he found work as a session guitarist for Fortune Records by day and in nightclubs at night. In the studios, he played backup to musicians and groups like Nolan Strong & the Diablos, Andre Williams & the Don Juans, and the Five Dollars. He also played guitar on the first recording by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles while traveling to Chicago to record as a session man for the Chess Records label. During his Detroit days, he also accompanied John Lee Hooker, Eddie Burns, Alberta Adams, Lowell Fulson, and the T.J. Fowler Band at their live shows, as well as Dinah Washington.

In the 1960s, Bassett moved to Seattle, where he backed up Tina Turner, Little Willie John, and others. Jimi Hendrix was a frequent guest at the bluesman's club gigs around Seattle. Before the decade ended, he moved back to Detroit, where he was based for the remainder of his life.

In 1994, Bassett received a lifetime achievement award from the Detroit Blues Society. He later recorded an album for the Dutch Black Magic label, I Gave My Life to the Blues (1996). Bassett and his band, the Blues Insurgents, made several U.S., Canadian, and European tours in support of LPs including 1997's Bassett Hound and 1998's Cadillac Blues. After the turn of the millennium, Bassett released two albums on the Sly Dog imprint of Mack Avenue Records, 2009's The Gentleman Is Back and 2012's I Can Make That Happen. After battling cancer, Johnnie Bassett died in August 2012 at the age of 76. ~by Richard Skelly

Here is a Christmas celebration attended by some of the greatest names in Rhythm and Blues. From the late 40s to the early 50s the biggest names in Blues including B.B. King, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Jimmy Witherspoon, Lowell Fulton, Roy Milton. The Drifters, Joe Turner and Chuck Berry sing their Christmas favourites. Being the blues of course many of the songs emphasise how lonely Christmas can be without the one you love whilst others celebrate the holiday season with joyful songs and new versions of standards like, "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". Many of these records constantly reappeared on the R&B sales charts every year. Some like Charles Brown's original million-selling "Merry Christmas Baby" were still selling well into the soul era. Depending on your mood you can preselect these titles, pour a large Brandy and wallow in the depressive elements of a lonely Christmas or roll back the carpet put another nickel in the jukebox and have a Rockin' Christmas celebration. Either way works.

Steve Bailey and the Blue Flames have been a solid Seattle Blues Band since the early 1970's, and it's easy to see the by-products of all this experience. With a harp that is second to none, superior guitar (Doug Hearny and Tim Sherman) and a set that absolutely hammers out poundin' blues in all forms - this CD defines "smokin'". The bands trademark is it's intensity and it is well represented on this record. Hard to imagine that a live performance could be more engrossing than what is captured on this fine studio recording. Hard-drivin' and classic blues for those who like plenty of energy in their music. Gets a solid recommendation from us!

Bettye LaVette gets classified as an R&B singer, which she is, of course, but her newest album, the Craig Street-produced Thankful N' Thoughtful, finds her taking her blues, gospel, and soul-influenced singing style into deep, swampy, and edgy American roots territory, and she makes it all work with a sting and bite to her phrasing that ranks her as one of the best living soul singers. She gives Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" a little jump of joy, moving the song away from being plaintive and lonely to something closer to anxious homesickness. Tom Waits' "Yesterday Is Here," complete with brass and reeds, loses some of its clang and becomes a poignant blues. The most stunning track here is LaVette's reinvention of the old folk song "Dirty Old Town," best known in the version by the Pogues. She fills it with disgust and ominous menace -- there's also a slower version of "Dirty Old Town" that lets a measure of sadness creep back in at the close of the album. Thankful N' Thoughtful is a solid outing from an outstanding singer who knows how to growl, croon, grumble, praise, and jump for joy with her vocal phrasing -- whatever makes the song live and breathe. She is still a marvel. ~Steve Leggett

Here is a small curiosity from a bygone era. R & B Express's first album from 1988 with many cool guests. The band consisted of Jostein Forsberg (vocals, harmonica), Espen Fjelle (organ, piano), Arild Reinertsen (bass) and Tor Arve Stenersen (drums). Morten Omlid was the band's guitarist, but the wife had the term while going to San Francisco to make a plate, so the guys invited Knut Reiersrud instead.

If there is one band that knows the meaning of Rock ‘n’ Roll, it’s Detroit’s Horse Cave Trio. The songwriting team of Ron DeVore (vocals & bass guitar) and Lou Simon (guitar) have soaked up influences along with bourbon, from the bluegrass of Kentucky to the mean streets of the Motor City. Think Elvis and Johnny Cash over at Sun Records in Memphis, and then add a healthy splash of Chicago Blues, Stooges / MC5 Detroit Attitude and Rolling Stones Swagger.

“Dust Off The Jukebox” is the fourth full length release from Horse Cave Trio and the second for the Award Winning Funky D Records. As the title implies, the band takes you on a journey through musical styles and memories that influenced them and this recording. Thirteen tracks fill this Jukebox, and each one is an instant HCT classic. The first track, “Memphis Shine” is a tribute to the sounds of Motown/Stax. The title track “Dust off The Jukebox” is a Stonesy stomp that has plenty of Detroit swagger and soul. “The Bluesman Of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Sugar Coated Love” feature Detroit guitar legend Jim McCarty. His former partner from The Detroit Wheels and The Rockets, Johnny Bee Badanjek, wrote and performs on the original track “Fix Of Love” which has a Sixties British Invasion feel. The producer for this release is Tino Gross(Howling Diablos) who also penned the Rockabilly original “Man Who Built Your Hot Rod”. The Horse Cave original “Honey Always” brings back the days of Doo Wop with a modern flair. “Chestnut Flats” takes you on a journey through the hills of Tennessee with a Tony Joe White/CCR swampy groove. Also featured throughout the release is Jimmie Bones(Kid Rock) who adds his signature keyboard magic.

The liner notes to this record proclaim that Michelle Willson will take over the crown, worn for many years by Dinah Washington, as the next queen of the blues. While that may be a bit of an overstatement, Willson does have great vocal ability, which she shows off here on her debut. Backed by the jump blues band Evil Gal, Willson shows her range by smoking through songs associated with her idols (Washington and Ruth Brown), such as "Voodoo Voodoo" and "I Know How to Do It," then doing a complete turn-around and giving beautiful readings of such classics as "At Last" and "Cry Me a River." She may not have reached the dizzying heights of her great influences, but with this fine debut, Willson is well on her way. ~by Steve Kurutz

Some albums stop you in your tracks. Like the smoky thump from a New Orleans juke-joint as you pass by on the sidewalk, Let The Demons Out is a rock 'n' roll siren call that pricks up your ears and puts you under its spell. And with Europe's fastest-rising young vocalist and Louisiana's hottest R&B crack-squad running the show, resistance is useless.

If you've not yet met Ghalia Vauthier, prepare to fall hard for an artist on the cusp of big things. Ghalia soon set herself the biggest one of all: America.

Every state heralded a new adventure, but perhaps most pivotal was Louisiana, where the seeds of Let The Demons Out were sown as Ghalia fell in with local legends Johnny Mastro & Mama's Boys. The chemistry between these fast friends was undeniable, and it spilled over into New Orleans' Music Shed Studio, as Ghalia drafted the lineup as her studio band. "The goal was to mix their attitude and experience with my songs and vocals," she explains, "creating a symbiosis and letting the musical chemistry blossom."

In an era of manufactured music, Let The Demons Out is as real as it gets. Mama's Boys provide the engine-room on these twelve tracks, with sparks flying between Mastro's gale-force harp, Smokehouse Brown's stinger guitars, the grooving bass of Dean Zucchero and the visceral beats of Rob Lee. Leading the line, meanwhile, is Ghalia's astonishing vocal, which somersaults from a honeyed purr to a hollered battlecry.

Michael Wayne Avery is a fresh face on the Blues/Carolina Blues/Beach Music scene. The man understands that energetic and captivating performances mixed with great lyrics, memorable melodies, and uplifting tempos are a recipe for a surf side success!
Fans have already recognized him from the hit “Candy’s Coming Back to Town” which was included on both his Greetings from Myrtle Beach CD and the SISBRO Records’ Carolina Shag IV compilation CD. As a teen, Michael took guitar lessons from Red Fenton, the man who once sold George Harrison his first Rickenbacker electric guitar the year before Beatlemania swept through American by storm. After a few chords and being amazed at how long Red could keep the ash on his cigarette before it fell off during guitar lessons, Michael hung out with a local family that played nothing but bluegrass. That foundation of clean acoustic playing taught him to listen judiciously to other players and to think in terms each instrument playing different parts. That sense of respect for the music above the notion of show-boating, stayed with him during his early development and throughout his body of work which has encompassed many genres. Hearing the arrangements of Stephen Stills on the first Crosby, Stills & Nash album, help Michael Wayne to understand that, above all, every single note that is played serves the song itself. That journey has led him to his latest release, his second in the Carolina Blues/Beach Music style.

With this recording I must say that with this album and now a DVD, Ginty may be to the blues what Keith Emerson was to rock. He adds a variety of effort, from huge and over the top solos that leave one exhausted and gasping for air when he’s done to thoughtful and soulful stuff. He is quite the keyboard player, using his B3 and other keys with aplomb!

Backed by a solid band and a cast of all-star musicians, Ginty goes high energy in this live recording with an audience in the studio. He does all the tunes off his album Bad News Travels in this first recording as part of the Live at Showcase Studios Concert Series. Located in Dover, NJ, the studio has a great sound and the musicians feed off each other, the great sound and the crowd listening in.

The DVD opens with the band jamming on some solid instrumentals called “Switch” and “Arrivals” that really begin furiously with John and his band warming things up nicely. I was breathless and spent listening. Albert Castiglia is then added to the mix on guitar and vocals for the thoughtful and poignant “Black Cat” and “Elvis Presley.” On the former, it remains so until the temperature rises to fever for a solo by Albert and then John where they just burn it up. The latter offers some more stinging solos by Castiglia as Albert sings “Elvis Presley is alive” as he describes a chance “encounter” with Elvis. Ginty adds more flavors to the pot with his big solo, too. Driving and cool stuff as Castgilia really shows his stuff off along with Ginty.

Todd Wolfe then comes on for a couple of cuts. He does “Peanut Butter” to start things off for him and he intros the song with a stinging guitar lead in, maintaining the huge guitar sound that Castiglia gave to us. He and Ginty smoke as they go back and forth with some heat on this really tight instrumental.

“Rock Ridge” follows; Ginty opens with an almost churchy sort of intro that is somewhat ethereal. The band joins in and Wolfe begins to slide into the stratosphere with him. They pick up the beat as Wolfe goes ballistic picking out a fine lead with Ginty following him solo for solo. Another high energy instrumental that is wickedly cool.

Alexis P. Suter and Jimmy Bennett on guitar (from Suter’s band) then do two songs with Ginty, “Seven and the Spirit” and “Damage Control.” Suter offers up some gravelly and almost gruff vocals; her deep voice is mesmerizing and quite gripping. The first cut is dark and soulful with a great beat and some nice work by Bennett and Ginty in support.

Castiglia returns for “Damage Control” and Cris Jacobs also joins the fray on guitar. This peppy uptempo cut has Alexis on lead vocals and harmonies by Jacobs. Jacobs and then Castiglia add some solos back to back that Ginty seems to enjoy on the video as he listens and plays along; I know I did! The two trade licks after the solos- hot stuff as Ginty grins and plays on! Castiglia offers up one verse on vocals and then all three sing together. Ginty then gives another emotional solo to close out the number.

Castiglia and Jacobs then perform “The Quirk” with Ginty. He begins things on the keys and then they all get into a funky and fun instrumental. It’s like Booker T and the MGs on steroids here with some huge organ work with a cool hook of a melody line. Castigila then grabs the hook and does a more relaxed solo to start that builts in sound and emotion and then switches off to Jacobs. Ginty comes in and then it’s back to the Castiglia as the tune just rises and rises in emotion and sound! Ginty then maintains the energy as the two axemen back him to the finish.

The band performs “Off the Cuff,” a jazzy cut that Ginty and company again kill. He and the dual drummers battle it out in a huge solo and then they all once again work things to a feverish pitch. Ginty concludes with some psychedelic organ rumblings a la Keith Emerson. Jacobs returns to the studio for “Mirrors” where he and GInty soften things up to start. It does not last too long as the band then picks up the beat and the cut begins to drive and get your feet tapping in rhythm. Then Jacobs blasts off in a Carlos Santana-esque guitar as Ginty and he play to a somewhat controlled abandon. The album concludes with the entire set of musicians returning to a frenetic “Trinity” where Ginty takes us to church at 100 miles an hour. Things slow a bit as Jacob’s guitar fill in, then Ginty changes the tempo and key. then the other axemen make things blaze as all four solo and then trade off licks; it’s spectacular.

There are two extras on the DVD. Ginty shows us how the Hammond gets transported to gigs as an added feature and then he and Ben Elliot talk about the studio and its’ analog sound and history. Elliot describes his vintage equipment that has been used in places like Abbey Road and in support of greats like Hendrix and the Stones. Ginty offers that he has computerized version of all of Elliots’ equipment but Elliot offers the sound can never be replicated by a computer. His real equipment and the suspended floor and ceiling and walls that do not reflect make the sound better than any digitized equipment in a home studio.

Ginty’s own band is Mike Buckman on guitar, Paul Kuzik on bass, and both Dan Fadel and Andrei Koribanics on drums. My heart was racing after this hour and a half of exceedingly frantic and big time music by Ginty, his great band and the guests.

Their sound is a melting pot of 1950's big city electric blues with the high energy sounds of early rockabilly and soul. Laurie Jane's jazz influenced vocals, sincere and restrained, float across the churning depths of Cort Duggins' twelve-string slide guitar and deep blues picking. Jason Embry's upright bass and Scott Dugdale's drums lay down raucous swinging back beats.

Hans van Lier (born in Groningen, the Netherlands 1961) is a versatile guitarplayer. His solo's are often lyrical, but he can also really storm. This always happens with great melodic sense. He masters various styles, and he is not afraid of rock 'n roll.

Hans is self-taught as a guitarplayer. At the age of fourteen he began playing the electric guitar. He soon learnt a lot of chords. On a given day he discovered a nice 'run', which he soon began to use as a basis for his playing. It turned out that he discovered the blues scale on his own. In this same year he did his first gig in Appelscha. (Friesland, the Netherlands)

Hans got a lot of inspiration from his direct environment where a lot of music was made. He studied the records of Blues players like Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, Luther 'guitar' Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. After a few years as a rythm guitar player Hans went solo at the age of eighteen. During the following years he worked with various bluesbands. In 1978 he entered the Dutch Guitar Championship in Paradiso. He finished third!

Hans has done a lot of work with female singers. He toured with Lia Ona in Denmark, and Gina de Boer (the Dutch Janis Joplin) has been in his band too. He worked with a.o. Hanneke Kappen (recorded a CD with her), Inki de Jonghe (King Lier), Rosa King from Amsterdam and Tineke Schoemaker (well known from 'Barrelhouse', one of the most successful bluesbands in the Netherlands). Together with Tineke, Hans was the best during a jazz- and bluesfestival in Friesland. He has also done some work with male singers: B.J. Hegen, Lourens Leeuw, Hans Dulfer, Marcel Kapteijn (Ten Sharp), Eddie C. Campbell from Chicago and guitarplayer Mick Taylor, old member of The Rolling Stones, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, better familiar as Double Trouble of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and also guitarplayer Jan Akkerman.

Like a whiskey soaked, Southern revival tent, Rio and the Rockabilly Revival serves up spitfire Rockabilly where angels fall and sinners are welcome. Make no mistake, this is not your daddy’s Doo-Wop. It’s pure Rock & Roll with all the sin, sweat and swagger allowed by law.

The Revival draws heavily from the genres that came together in the early 50’s to form what would be first known as Rockabilly and later known as Rock and Roll: Jump Blues, Gospel, Hillbilly Swing and Rhythm and Blues. These genres came together with a “rock beat” and Rockabilly was born. Later it would be known as Rock & Roll. Blending these old school sounds with a fresh, modern, aesthetic has proven to be a winning combination for Rio and the Rockabilly Revival, appealing to traditional purists and modern music lovers alike.

With 100+ collective years of prof. experience between them, Rio & the Rockabilly Revival serve up blistering, spitfire rockabilly, circa 1950's, fueled by Detroit diesel in their veins. RRR's live show is electrifying. Reviewers and fans alike testifying to feeling the "Rock & Roll Holy Ghost" in the room. Rio, niece of rockabilly legend Jack Scott, lives up to her rockabilly royalty roots.

Theodore Joseph "Ted" Horowitz, who plays under the stage name of Popa Chubby (a play on the slang idiom "pop a chubby", meaning to get an erection), is an American Rock / Electric blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world, where in many territories he is a star.

“People ask me why 2 dogs? It’s an old fable – 2 dogs, 2 wolves”. We have become polarized as a race. There is a battle inside each of us. Each day we rise and must choose our path calling upon each other and our own spirits for strength and courage. The dog we feed is the one that rules the dog we starve dies of neglect. It is up to each of us to use our spirit to feed the dog that will enable all of us to thrive. I believe in the triumph of the human spirit, I believe that a grain of hope is more powerful than a mountain of fear. And I believe I love. We are here to love. Love each other, love the gift that is this life, and love music. So my dear friends, I make this offering to you with love, hope and the awareness that the dog I feed is the one that will help me to bring all the love in my soul to you.”

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums from the legendary vocalist. LaVern Baker was one of the most important female vocalists of any time or genre. Her musical styles ranged between ground-breaking Rock 'n' Roll, cheerful R&B, early Soul, Jump Blues and Jazz. Whatever the style, Baker's sound was unique a soulful combination of unbridled lungpower and sophisticated phrasing. With the possible exception of Ruth Brown and the Chantels' Arlene Smith, Baker had no equal until the arrival of Aretha Franklin.

This collector's edition compiles two of her complete albums for Atlantic: La Vern (1956) and LaVern Baker Rock & Roll (1957). Both LPs contain the cream of the crop from Baker's hitmaking stretch for the Atlantic label during her early years. In addition, we have included four bonus tracks consisting of hard to find sides from the same period.

These splendid recordings feature a virtual who's who of great sidemen, including King Curtis, Milt Hinton, Hank Jones, Taft Jordan, Sam the Man Taylor, Urbie Green, Al Caiola and Joe Marshall, among others. /Amazon

Memphis Heat documents Chicago blues piano legend Memphis Slim's studio collaborations with the rock group Canned Heat in France on September 18, 1970, and July 11, 1973. The results are tasty indeed. Slim's voice and piano are well matched by Henry Vestine's electric guitar, Canned Heat's rockin' rhythm section, and (on six out of 13 tracks) the Memphis Horns, a solid wind quintet of trumpet, trombone, two tenors, and a baritone sax.

Memphis Slim tried on a lot of different styles and instrumental combinations during the 1970s. His Canned Heat sessions have been both praised and panned over the years, a state of affairs that often revealed more about the reviewers than the music itself. A fair assessment should take into account the blues and rock scene of the early '70s, the pianist's artistic intentions as he capped a long and eventful career, and perhaps most importantly the positive effect that this music is likely to have upon any listener who loves a good jumpin' electric blues band. /Arwul Arwulf, AllMusic

Jimmy Reed - Boss Man (2 CD)

Jimmy Reed followed a limited formula, but it worked time and time again, and his songs, because of their inherent structural simplicity, are among the most versatile in the blues canon, and have been covered by countless blues and pop artists. With his laid-back, slurred singing style stretched over a lazy, easy boogie rhythm, and punctuated by short runs on his racked harmonica, Reed brought a kind of hushed, unhurried urgency to everything he recorded. The lyrics to his songs were actually written by his wife, Mary Lee Reed, and although she remains in the background on his records, they were very much a songwriting team, turning out such enduring classics as "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," "Big Boss Man," "Bright Lights, Big City," and "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby," all of which are included on this collection.

Everything Reed recorded is cut from the same cloth, so casual listeners may find this anthology to be a disc too long, while serious listeners will undoubtedly want a set that goes into even more depth. For those in between, this set will be a perfect fit. /Steve Leggett, AllMusic

Though much early rock & roll was based in the blues, Blues-Rock didn't fully develop into a subgenre until the late-'60s. Blues-rock emphasized two specific things -- the traditional, three-chord blues song and instrumental improvisation. Borrowing the idea of an instrumental combo and loud amplification from rock & roll, the original blues-rockers -- bands like Cream that grew out of the Alexis Korner and John Mayall tradition of British blues, as well as American bands like the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Canned Heat -- also attempted to play long, involved improvisations which were commonplace on jazz records, as well as live blues shows. The hybrid became quite popular and the bands that immediately followed them were louder and more riff-oriented. Out of this approach came heavy metal and Southern rock, which both used basic blues riffs and featured extended solos. In the early '70s, the lines between blues-rock and hard rock were barely visible, as boogie-based bands like ZZ Top employed album-rock production techniques that tended to obscure their blues roots. However, blues-rock soon backed away from hard rock, and there was a set number of acts that continued to play (and rewrite) blues standards as well as write their own songs in the same idiom. In the '80s and '90s, blues-rock was more roots-oriented than in the '60s and '70s, even when artists like the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan flirted with rock stardom. By the '80s, blues-rock had become an accepted tradition, much like the blues.

The Refreshments - 2 albums: Refreshing Classics / Wow Factor

It's not an overstatement to say that The Refreshments since 1995 has been one of Europe's most reliable suppliers of high-energy "rock" and just about equal doses of swinging "roll". By travelling all over their native Sweden to play their music night after night, they've developed a rock'n'roll sound that for more than two decades has made a steadily growing audience dance, tap their feet and pump up the volume on their car stereo - sometimes simultaneously.

Unlikely enough, it all started in the 80's. In a time when synth pop and soft metal ruled the airwaves, some teenagers from Gavle, Sweden, realized that they loved Chuck Berry, Rockpile and classic rock'n'roll more than anything that was on MTV or radio. In 1989 they decided to do something about it, formed The Refreshments, and with half a million albums sold (of which twelve gold and two platinum), a Grammy nomination and more than 4 000 live shows has deserved the title as Sweden's hardest and most rootsy rock'n'roll band many times over.

The night before the show, Art called to say the alternator in his car had gone out, and he was buying a ticket to get the Greyhound out of Memphis the next morning.

The morning after the show, Adam called to ask if I knew where his guitar, his shoes, or his bag had ended up.

What happened inbetween was pure magic, music like none ever heard before, soaring over the Nashville skyline on a hot summer night, fueled by a bottle of tequila, too many vodka drinks to count (thanks to our sponsor), and a mysterious “Happy Birthday Artie” cake that just coincidentally was waiting for us in the dressing room—no relation.

The mission of the Kudzu Orkestra is to spread unity via the relentless power of the monochordal, on-the-one romp groove, and this recording gives testament to its potency. Of the eleven musicians who comprised the Orkestra that night, only a handful had ever been in the same room together, not to mention ever having shared a stage, or having any clue what songs we were likely to launch into.

When you listen to this record, you’ll hear the people and the personalities at play behind the performance — exchanges of musical ideas, of mentalities, of perspectives in the truest sense: each player a prism of how they hear and see the world, reflected and refracted, eventually brought together and amplified.

Sound waves are standing waves, and when we think of sound, we far too often forget the physicality of resonance, of what it means to vibrate at the same frequency.

As Art said, as we slouched into our booth at the diner post-show, cheeseburgers in hand (or in Adam’s case, staring up at him from the table): “No one else did anything like this here tonight.”

Sit back, pour yourself a stiff drink or two, and let yourself get lost in these vines.

Happy listening ~Reed

If Fixin' Your Head's grainy, vintage sound turned a lot of heads, Nitelife Boogie will certainly put more than a few blues fiends into neck braces. Utilizing vintage recording equipment and a live performance aesthetic, guitarist/singer Nick Curran reinterprets jump blues classics along with rarities and originals in the exact style of the original recordings. This guy uses Murray's Superior Hair Dressing on his pompadour, wears some snappy vintage threads, and is backed by a tight rhythm section and two tenor saxophones. Scenesters will certainly appreciate his adherence to vintage style, but Curran's chops are no cute trend. Like a mad-blues hungry-scientist's clone hybrid of Little Richard and T-Bone Walker, it's uncanny how much Curran sounds like his post-war blues idols. But rather than coming off as a staid, neo-traditionalist, Curran imbues each track with a fresh urgency lacking in many modern blues releases. In fact, even on his originals like the raunchy and wrong "She's Fifteen," Curran often improves his idols' approach, by distilling and magnifying the catchy and gritty elements that make jump blues so compelling. He takes on Johnny "Guitar" Watson's bizarre instro "Space Guitar," bettering the original with interesting reverb on/reverb off production tweaks. Similarly, there's a rebellious, punk-like exuberance in the way Curran's microphone distorts during the frenzied gospel-shouts of Lloyd Price's raucous "I'm Glad, Glad." If it wasn't a classic before, it is now. ~by Matt Collar

Jimmy Dawkins was one of the originators of the tough West Side sound in Chicago blues. Since his initial appearance on Delmark in the late '60s, his career has had its ups and downs, often going years without recording. After a string of lackluster releases in the '80s, and some time away from performing, Dawkins started to find his feet again in the early '90s. Tell Me Baby is Dawkins' second album for Fedora and features the same core players as his earlier effort for the label from 2001: Frank Goldwasser on guitar, John Suhr on organ, and Chris Millar on drums and producing. Additionally on this 2003 session, Dawkins is rejoined by guitarist Rich Kirch, whom he played with back in the '70s.

The first track stumbles a bit, with Dawkins' guitar too low in the mix and perhaps just a bit too much production gloss. But as things progress, the band seems to pick up steam, and his guitar takes its proper place upfront. Dawkins' impassioned singing still hits home, his tough guitar soloing has lost none of its edge (there is still no one who plays quite like him), and the tunes give him plenty of room to stretch out. Tell Me Baby will never take the place of his early Delmark material, but it's good to hear an unsung bluesman like Dawkins still kicking it out after 35 years. /Sean Westergaard, AllMusic
