Charles Wheal first got the inspiration to play blues guitar after seeing Bob Margolin (Muddy Waters' guitartist for most of the '70s) performing in and around Blacksburg, VA. In 1997, harmonica player Mark Hummel asked Charles to join his band, 'The Blues Survivors'. For the next ten years Charles traveled all over the United States and the world, backing up a virtual who's who of blues greats, including James Cotton, Snooky Pryor, Billy Boy Arnold, Sam Myers, Kim Wilson and James Harman to name a few. In October 2006, Charles left Mark Hummel to focus all his energy on his own band.
For this CD, Charles put together a truly great band. Steve Wolf was a colleague in Mark Hummel's band and has been playing with Charles since 2006. His tone, feel and creativity mark him as one of the best there is. His playing here is a testament to his cult following among other bass players. J.Hansen (Rick Estrin and the Nightcats) is one of the finest blues/roots/swing drummers in the world today. Bob Welch (Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musslewhite, Rusty Zinn Band and John Nemeth Band) plays impeccable piano throughout. Finally, Scott Peterson (tenor saxaphone) and Gary Smith (harmonica) shine every time they step forward, playing with unmatched tone, taste and feel.
Special mention goes out to Chris 'Kid' Andersen, who engineered and co-produced these sessions and his own Greaseland Studios in San Jose, CA. He is one of the finest musicians of his generation, and that musicality comes through whether he is playing his guitar (or bass, or drums or banjo, or pedal steel...) or twisting the knobs on a mixing board.
(Should anyone have a better set of scans for this one it would be most appreciated.)
