It's been almost 20 years since Seasick Steve's celebrated appearance on Jools Holland's Hootenanny launched the unknown American singer-songwriter to worldwide fame, and his beat-up three-string Japanese guitar and old wooden stompbox made musical history. The overwhelming response surprised nobody more than Steve himself, and was like a lightning strike; the impact of which is still being felt close to two decades later, as he has gone onto play almost every major festival in the world, rack up over 2 million album sales, and release three UK Top 10 albums.

His new record, A Trip A Stumble A Fall Down On Your Knees, is a record he proudly says is his favourite to date. Steve says: “This album was made by mistake, as the title suggests we just tripped and stumbled into it, and it became my favourite album ever and the piece of work I’m most proud of to date. There’s not a week goes by that I don’t thank my lucky stars for that night on the Hootenanny which has brought us here to this record”.

Seasick Steve has been playing music all his life although he didn't start making a living at it until he was in his early sixties. He was born in Oakland, and took guitar lessons from K.C. Douglas who wrote the standard "Mercury Blues." He traveled the world busking, played as a session guitarist, and was befriended by Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell in the '60s. In the '80s, he produced the first Modest Mouse album This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About. He moved to Norway with his wife and family in 2001, and started recording his quirky blues tunes on an old four-track tape machine. After a heart attack, he got serious about his career and cut Dog House Music, which sold over 200,000 copies with little promotion.

An appearance on Jools Holland's BBC TV show, helped his next record, I Started Out with Nothin and I Still Got Most of It Left, go platinum in England. Man from Another Time follows in the footsteps of his breakthrough with a raw, unpolished sound that showcases Steve's skills on guitar, banjo, and diddley bo. The album was cut in real time on analog tape, and sounds as warm and funky as Steve himself.

"The Banjo Song" is a hard-luck tale that shows off Steve's moaning vocals and haunted banjo picking. "That's All" is a John Lee Hooker-style trance blues driven by Dan Magnusson's four-on-the-floor drumming, Steve's propulsive, fuzzy electric guitar licks, and an exuberant vocal. "Seasick Boogie" is a three-note stomper that sustains your interest by the force of Steve's wailing vocals, rhythm guitar work, and Magnusson's inventive percussion work. Steve digs deep into the roots of the blues on "Dark," a guitar and moaning vocal meditation on mortality, and "Just Because I Can (CSX)" the melancholy lament of a railroad hobo given a deadpan vocal and enriched by Steve's acoustic guitar work, full of icy slides and stinging bent notes. /J. As fully formed legends go, Seasick Steve ticked all the boxes when he shot to stardom after his one-man invasion of Jools Holland’s New Year’s Eve Hootenanny 10 years ago. Festivals roared as punters embraced his boxcar tales, self-made guitars and the grizzled warmth he happily translated onto record. Now in his mid-70s, Steve takes a more reflective approach on his eighth album, letting his full-bore blues roar take a back seat in favour of compelling reflections such as the tough but tender life lessons of Maybe I Might and Hard Knocks, along with well-chosen cover versions including Glen Campbell’s Gentle On My Mind, the Harry Nilsson hit Everybody’s Talkin’ and Arthur Lee’s desperate Signed DC.

There’s an intimate warmth glowing throughout the 20 tracks on these two discs as Steve audibly lives every subtle nuance he sings or plays, maybe still with some disbelief that he’s now able to headline Wembley Arena by his lonesome self.

Seasick Steve - I Started Out with Nothin and I Still Got Most of It Left (2CD limited edition)

After an appearance on British TV, Seasick Steve found himself thrust into the spotlight after decades spent as a hobo, a busker, and a sound engineer. His earnest brand of classic blues struck a strong chord in the midst of so much overproduced music of the day, and as they had done decades before, Brits lined up for the simple pleasures of American blues, which led Steve to a major-label release which quickly made it into the Top 10. While some fans (and critics) had worried that major-label production would kill the bare-bones aesthetic that really made Steve's music shine, that proved a non-issue for the most part. I Started Out with Nothin' and I Still Got Most of It Left opens with the title track, probably the most produced piece present. It's a simple thumping blues in the vein of John Lee Hooker, with some nice but unnecessary vocals courtesy of Ruby Murray. Steve's voice is smooth, almost sensual compared to the gravelly gutbucket one might have been expecting. The production doesn't get in the way of the music too much, though the overall effect is a bit more grandiose than Steve's sound really would call for. Luckily, the sound gets decidedly less smooth as the album moves along, emphasizing Steve's aesthetic a bit more -- his vocals remain smooth, but the compositions are a little more folksy, a little more Southern. Though the album gets a bit sidetracked by the interspersed bits of BBC documentary (ranging from storytelling to clips of Steve ordering lunch), it's hard to stop him when he gets on a good roll. On tracks like "Thunderbird" (a rocking electric blues devoted to his favorite fortified wine) or "Chiggers" (a start-and-stop bit of acoustic blues in a little bit of a Texas vein), he lets loose on the guitar with a full load of joy -- it's clear that he's just having fun here, and the songs shine in response. He can go more contemplative (as on "My Youth"), but Seasick Steve is really in his element on the lighter side of the blues -- country-blues nostalgia, train-riding stories, Taj Mahal-style rolling, and tumbling blues (including of course, the track "Roll and Tumble Blues"). The album's got flaws, it's got some dead ends, and at least at times he seems to be emulating his heroes (John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal) more than creating new music. However, the album is also easily one of the better blues releases in the last few years and is excellent at what appears to be its original goal -- evoking simple joy. -- Allmusic.

Yes, they really do still make albums like this in the 21st century. Steve Wold, otherwise known as Seasick Steve, released his second album, Dog House Music in 2007, his first purely solo effort; he had previously released an album entitled Cheap several years earlier for which he shared the credit with Swedish band the Level Devils. Dog House Music is like a really old John Lee Hooker or Muddy Waters album, or maybe something even less commercial as Steve strums his guitar and sings along, his voice sounding drowned in bourbon, and occasionally a song such as "Fallen off a Rock" crashes to life, literally, with the guitar no longer picking out a sorrowful blues lick but strumming wildly and the drums smashing away in the foreground played by two members of his family, HJ Wold and PM Wold. Apart from that however, the entire album is played by Steve, recorded in what sounded like one take, when he might have been sitting in a leaky shack by the Mississippi, almost every track given a short introduction almost as if to explain to a personal audience what the forthcoming song is about and why it is important. The album begins with the very short (just over one minute) track, "Yellow Dog" which sounds like it was been recorded at the bottom of a well, the acoustics are so terrible. When the final track, "I'm Gone," finishes, there is a small gap which is followed by Steve reciting a real shaggy dog story, over five minutes long, no music, just Steve rambling about being arrested and after spending six months in jail, looking for his runaway dog; this eventually runs into another sad blues song (about a dog). Not sure why anybody would want to listen to this story more than once. Even the album cover looks like it was designed and drawn by a six-year-old, but that simply adds to the unpolished and underproduced nature of the work, which is a credit, not a fault. -- Allmusic.

Cheap is the debut album from Seasick Steve. It consists of songs by him and his Swedish/Norwegian band The Level Devils (bass & drums), and also two stories from his life as a hobo. This trio plays raw down home juke joint blues and it sounds this is a semi-improvised busking, somewhere on a street corner. This is foot tapping, swinging and rocking blues. Exiting ! Track 12 ends with a hidden track !

Produced and written by Seasick Steve and recorded in his front room at the little farm where he lives, it's his seventh studio record and most ambitious work yet. Along with longtime drummer Dan Magnusson, the album also features Luther Dickinson (Mississippi All Stars) playing slide guitar on two tracks, Georgina Leach on fiddle, and Ben Miller playing jaw harp on lead track ‘Summertime Boy’, a song celebrating the life and sunshine of California.

"The whole record is mostly me and Dan sitting there drinking and playing", says Steve. "There ain’t a whole lot of producing going on! But I know what I’m doing and I know what I want."

Since appearing on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny New Year’s Eve 2006, Seasick Steve’s career both on record and onstage has gone from strength to strength. It’s been quite a ride, and in the process he has established himself as one of the best live acts in music today. Fans of all ages can testify to this, having witnessed incredible live performances at festivals and venues round the world.

Wielding his Morris Minor guitar fashioned out of two hubcaps and garden hoe, Seasick Steve is indisputably a living legend, and is recognized as such the world over--particularly in the UK where he has received four gold and one platinum records, sold out the likes of the Royal Albert Hall and and the Manchester and Hammersmith Apollo theaters, appeared on national TV, been nominated for multiple Brit Awards, played the Glastonbury and V Festivals, and shared the stage with the likes of John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl. In 2011, Steve released You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks, his first full length album for Third Man Records.

Hubcap Music kicks off with "Down On The Farm," which Steve debuted live at last year's Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands and is one of several tracks on the record to feature John Paul Jones on bass. Jones also contributes mandolin, Hammond organ and more to the record, while other Hubcap players include Jack White on "The Way I Do" Luther Dickinson on "Home," and Dan Magnusson holding down the beat as he does for Steve's live shows.
