Chicken Shack had come to prominence in the late 1960s as one of Britain’s finest blues bands, recording a series of albums for the Blue Horizon label. By 1971, the band had undergone changes to their line-up and guitarist/vocalist Stan Webb took the band in a harder rock direction. Signing to Decca’s Deram label in 1971 under a production deal, Webb’s band, now a trio featuring John Glascock (bass) and Paul Hancox (drums), recorded the fine album ‘Imagination Lady’, featuring such classic tracks as ‘Crying Won’t Help You Now’, ‘Daughter Of The Hillside’ and the epic ‘Telling Your Fortune’.

John Glascock departed the band in 1972 and was replaced by Bob Daisley on bass. This line-up would record another excellent album, ‘Unlucky Boy’, which was released in early 1973 and featured a guest appearance by Chris Mercer on saxophones. Again, this line-up would prove to be short lived, with Stan Webb forming an entirely new line-up of the band in 1973 to head out on the road.

The band’s final album for Deram was the live set, ‘Goodbye Chicken Shack’, recorded at Brunel University on the 26th October 1973 with Webb joined by Dave Wilkinson (electric piano), Rob Hull (bass) and Alan Powell (drums). Soon after this recording, Webb disbanded Chicken Shack to join Savoy Brown. The album was belatedly released in Europe in 1974 and was a fine testament to the excellence of Chicken Shack as a live band. This box set gathers together all of the albums and singles issued between 1971 and 1974 and is a splendid tribute to a fine band.

This Castle package features the best of Chicken Shack's Deram years, when they kept some of the trademark blues expression that made them somewhat popular in the British blues scene of the 1960s, while getting decidedly heavier to the point of being a power metal trio. The entire Imagination Lady album is presented here, along with eight of the 14 cuts from Unlucky Boy. As a bonus, there is a second disc that contains Chicken Shack's unreleased Goodbye album, which was cut live.

Those who worshiped the early band - and there are people who did since they were in their way as credible as the Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer-led Fleetwood Mac (and even had Christine Perfect as a member for a time before she left and married the Mac's bassist, John McVie) - will, as those of the day did, find this material tedious and plodding. However, those who have found solace in the hard rock of the early '70s will find this material not only gratifying but surprising in its way, given the mastery of the material and the big, loud, and raw mixes. Recommended. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

This British blues-rock group is remembered mostly for their keyboard player, Christine Perfect, who would join Fleetwood Mac after marrying John McVie and changing her last name. Although they were one of the more pedestrian acts of the British blues boom, Chicken Shack was quite popular for a time in the late '60s, placing two albums in the British Top 20. The frontperson of Chicken was not Perfect/McVie, but guitarist Stan Webb, who would excite British audiences by entering the crowds at performances, courtesy of his 100-meter-long guitar lead. They were signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label, a British blues pillar that had its biggest success with early Fleetwood Mac.

Chicken Shack was actually not far behind Mac in popularity in the late '60s, purveying a more traditional brand of Chicago blues, heavily influenced by Freddie King. Although Webb took most of the songwriting and vocal duties, Christine Perfect also chipped in with occasional compositions and lead singing. In fact, she sang lead on their only British Top 20 single, "I'd Rather Go Blind" (1969). But around that time, she quit the music business to marry John McVie and become a housewife, although, as the world knows, that didn't last too long. Chicken Shack never recovered from Christine's loss, commercially or musically. Stan Webb kept Chicken Shack going, with a revolving door of other musicians, all the way into the 1980s, though he briefly disbanded the group to join Savoy Brown for a while in the mid-'70s. /Biography by Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Stan Webb was at the heart of the British Blues Boom as he led his band Chicken Shack around the Blues club circuit in the late 60s. Londoner Stan played guitar in skiffle groups before forming his own band in 1965, playing a series of residencies in Hamburg, Germany over the next couple of years. When the band signed for the new Blue Horizon label in 1967, they were called Chicken Shack and consisted of Stan on guitar, Christine Perfect (later McVie) on piano, drummer Dave Bidwell, and bassist Andy Sylvester, who later played with Foghat.

In 1968, they released their album ’40 Blue Fingers, Freshly Packed and Ready to Serve’, and opened a big tour for labelmates Fleetwood Mac. Their most popular number was a version of ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, the Etta James standard, sung by Christine Perfect. Stan himself had a true Blues sensibility, and an excellent guitar technique, closely modeled on Freddie King. Five years of constant touring and recording followed, and the pressures of this crazy lifestyle led to many changes in personnel, including Christine Perfect switching to Fleetwood Mac.

In 1974, Stan dissolved Chicken Shack and joined another British Blues band, Savoy Brown, but returned a year later with ‘Stan Webb’s Chicken Shack’. This band, with an ever changing roster of side-men, has continued to support Stan up to the present, playing regularly in the UK and touring Europe. After almost 50 years on the road, Stan still carries the torch for British Blues.

Stan Webb With Chicken Shack - Reflections (2-Disc Set)

Webb was born in Fulham, South West London. Initially playing in skiffle bands, Webb formed the first version of the blues band Chicken Shack with bassist Andy Silvester in 1965. The band played in Hamburg, Germany over the next couple of years.[1] They signed to the Blue Horizon record label in 1967, where their label mates were the fledgling Fleetwood Mac. The group was then composed of Webb, Christine Perfect, drummer Dave Bidwell, and bassist Andy Silvester. Bidwell and Silvester would later become the rhythm section of the British blues ensemble, Savoy Brown. Webb also joined Savoy Brown for their album Boogie Brothers. Perfect later joined Fleetwood Mac becoming Christine McVie after her marriage to the band's bassist, John McVie.

Chicken Shack enjoyed their heyday in the mid to late 1960s, when R&B was popular in England. Chicken Shack's line-up has evolved over the years, with Webb being the only constant. Their music was traditional in make-up, and the group covered a variety of American blues standards, as well as composing their own songs.

Chicken Shack are a British blues band, founded in the mid-1960s by Stan Webb (guitar and vocals), Andy Silvester (bass guitar), and Alan Morley (drums), who were later joined by Christine Perfect (vocals and keyboards) in 1968.

The band were formed in April 1965, naming themselves after Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack" album. Chicken shacks (chicken restaurants) had also by then frequently been mentioned in blues and rhythm and blues songs, as in Amos Milburn's hit, "Chicken Shack Boogie". Their first concert was at the 1967 National Blues and Jazz Festival at Windsor and they were signed by the Blue Horizon record label in the same year.

Chicken Shack enjoyed modest commercial success, with Christine Perfect being voted Best Female Vocalist in the Melody Maker polls, two years running.

Perfect left the band in 1969 when she married John McVie of Fleetwood Mac. Pianist Paul Raymond, bassist Andy Silvester, and drummer Dave Bidwell all left in 1971 to join Savoy Brown. In 1977 Silvester joined Los Angeles based ensemble, Wha-Koo. Webb was also recruited for Savoy Brown in the mid-1970s, and recorded the album Boogie Brothers with them.

Chicken Shack evolved from a Stourbridge, UK based band called Sounds Of Blue who were performing in the West Midlands area by early 1964. The original members included singer and pianist Christine Perfect, bass guitarist Andy Sylvester, guitarist Stan Webb, and saxophonist Chris Wood. Following a host of drummers, Dave Bidwell became their permanent one in 1966/67. While touring the UK in 1967, opening for Fleetwood Mac, Christine met John McVie, whom she later married. She eventually left and replaced Peter Green in Fleetwood Mac. She was replaced by Paul Raymond.

In 1970 Stan Webb had a falling-out with Mike Vernon which resulted in the group being dropped by their record label. There were also disagreements within the group which resulted in the departure of Dave Bidwell and Paul Raymond who both left to join the famous London blues outfit Savoy Brown. Undaunted, Stan Webb continued with a new line-up which included bass guitarist John Glassock from Jethro Tull and Paul Hancox on drums but by the mid 1970's and after various other personnel changes, Chicken Shack finally disbanded.

Originally released in 1970, this is a 2004 reissue with 13 bonus tracks including single A-sides, B-sides and 9 BBC Sessions On Air 1968-1970.

If one can overlook Stan Webb's hyperventilating vocal excesses (which ain't easy), this is a promising debut, especially noteworthy for Webb's Freddie King-inspired guitar sting and Christine Perfect's understated vocals (only two, unfortunately compared to Webb's six). Webb does justice to his mentor with two instrumentals, King's "San-Ho-Zay" and his own "Webbed Feet," and Perfect proves the ideal counterpart -- one of the few pianists paying homage to King's longtime collaborator Sonny Thompson. Nice spare sound, typical of Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label. /Dan Forte, AllMusic

Chicken Shack - The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions (3 CD)

Formed and led by guitarist/vocalist Stan Webb, Chicken Shack were one of the first bands to be signed to the Blue Horizon label in the mid-'60s. As of this compilation's release in 2006, Webb was still fronting a version of the group. While never attaining any success in the States, Chicken Shack were well known in the U.K., with fleeting success second only to John Mayall and labelmates Fleetwood Mac. Webb's Freddie King-styled guitar and vocalist/pianist Christine Perfect's (later McVie) singing were the major draws to this second-tier British blues band, but neither were strong enough to carry the group's success to the U.S. market.

This three-disc set collects the band's entire output for the imprint from 1967-1969 and includes alternate takes, singles, and B-sides (56 tracks in all), and also features terrific liner notes by label head/producer Mike Vernon. Perfect stayed for two of four releases for the label, exiting before the recording of 1969's 100 Ton Chicken. Hence she appears on about half of this disc, leaving after the U.K. hit single "I'd Rather Go Blind." Webb's often wobbly but amiable singing is an acquired taste, so Perfect's husky, smooth vocals and classy blues piano runs were major contributions to the band, and strong points they never adequately replaced.

Occasional use of horns distinguished Chicken Shack from both Mac and Savoy Brown, another band very much in the Shack style and one with whom they swapped members. These three discs include the contents of four albums and assorted singles, with much of this music hard to obtain. The remastering is excellent, too, and it's safe to say that Chicken Shack have never sounded better. But the band wasn't strong or innovative enough to maintain interest over these four albums, making this all-inclusive set essential only for fans, collectors, and those looking to research the roots of Christine Perfect's pre-Fleetwood Mac sultry blues-tinged pop. Everyone else can make due with 2004's The Very Best of Chicken Shack, a single disc that cherry-picks the better tunes from the Blue Horizon era. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Stan Webb/Chicken Shack - Going Up, Going Down: The Anthology 1968-2001 (2-Disc Set)

Going Up, Going Down is a double-disc set on the Castle label focusing on Chicken Shack singer and guitarist Stan Webb. The first disc captures the early days of his British electric blues band when the lineup included future Fleetwood Mac keyboardist Christine Perfect (pre-McVie). Their earliest repertoire, made up of electric blues cover versions, is reflected through both studio recordings and various live gigs, with fundamentally decent takes of "Everyday I Have the Blues," "Tell Me," "San Ho Zay," "I'm Tore Down," "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "He Knows the Rules."

The second disc is a bit more interesting as the band progresses into a harder and louder guitar-driven unit, utilizing Webb's original songs, which have more in common with Paul Rodgers and Free than the previous incarnations did with classic electric blues. Unfortunately, the two live tracks are the weakest on the second disc; "Back Door Man" gets bogged down with pseudo-Hendrix wah-wah pedal hysterics, and the second reading of "Tell Me" is perfunctory. At 36 tracks, Going Up, Going Down may be too much for the novice, but the collector will certainly find this of interest. ~Al Campbell

Webb was born in Fulham, South West London. Playing firstly in skiffle bands, Webb, together with bassist Andy Silvester, formed the first version of the blues band, Chicken Shack in 1965. The band played in Hamburg, Germany over the next couple of years, as Webb perfected his playing techniques. They signed to the Blue Horizon record label in 1967, where their label mates were the fledgling Fleetwood Mac. The group was then composed of Webb, Christine Perfect, drummer Dave Bidwell, and bassist Andy Silvester. (Bidwell and Silvester would later become the rhythm section of the British blues ensemble, Savoy Brown. Webb also joined Savoy Brown, recording the album Boogie Brothers). Chicken Shack enjoyed their heyday in the mid to late 1960s, when R&B was a popular music form in England. Their music was traditional in make-up, and the group covered a variety of American blues standards, as well as composing several home-spun tunes. Their repertoire included, arguably, their most played track - "I'd Rather Go Blind". This song was originally recorded by Etta James, written by Ellington Jordan and Billy Foster, and became a modern day blues classic.

Chicken Shack are probably most remembered for including Perfect on keyboards and vocals in their line-up. She rose to far greater fame when she later joined Fleetwood Mac becoming Christine McVie after her marriage to the band's bassist, John McVie.

Chicken Shack's line-up has evolved and changed considerably over the years with Webb being the only constant factor. In 2001, Webb released his first solo album for over eight years when Webb appeared on the Indigo Records label.
