Hot on the heels of his chart topping 2024 acoustic blues album Oh So Good, award-winning Bay Area bluesman, Blind Lemon Pledge, surprises his fans with his first live album, Lemon Live! Since his first recorded release in 2009, Blind Lemon has maintained a two-pronged musical career as both studio recording artist and as leader of the eponymously named Blind Lemon Pledge band, playing a variety of venues throughout Northern California. Lemon Live! captures the excitement and skill of his quartet in performance.

As a solo recording artist, working with an array of talented musicians, Pledge has created ten widely varied American Roots Music-based albums with forays into blues, rock, folk/country and even a well-received classic jazz project. And he has achieved consistent critical success and Top Ten Chart status.

As band leader, Pledge has assembled a team of like-minded musicians to help achieve and expand upon his eclectic American Roots Music vision. While Pledge's solo projects have largely featured his award- winning original compositions, the 90+ song BLP Band’s repertoire deftly mixes classic blues, Americana and jazz songs with Pledge's critically acclaimed compositions.

Lemon Live! documents the Blind Lemon Pledge Band in performance. Recorded over two performances in Pacifica, CA, this is a raw, warts-and-all testament to the tight rhythmic power and melodic strength of the band’s rootsy music. With Winston "Sioux City Slim" Andrews on harmonica, Peter Grenell on bass, rockin' Juli Moscovitz on drums, and Blind Lemon Pledge on guitar and vocals, the quartet achieves an impressive acoustic fullness and sense of dynamics.

The album kicks off with three of Pledge's originals: "Black Eyed Susie" - an energetic, slide guitar driven ode to Son House; "Hard Heart Honey Bee" - with echoes of rockabilly; and "Sugar Rush" - a swinging, gently risqué ragtime number.

"Somebody Loan Me A Dime", the first cover tune, combines a variation on the Boz Skaggs arrangement with some of Fenton Robinson's original vocal phrasings. "She's Into Something" - a deep Muddy Waters cut with an unexpected rhumba beat, "I Feel Like Goin' Home" - a classic Muddy Waters song, "Fever" which channels Little Willie John, and the classic Americana song "I Know You Rider" follow in short order with an array of tempos and moods. "You Can't Get There From Here", another Pledge original, brings in a melancholy touch of jazz. "Big Road Blues", "Railroad Mama" and "The Red Rooster" drive us to the final cut: "Junkyard Dog" - a humorous Pledge original with boisterous audience participation.

Lemon Live! is a fun, lively, joyous romp through Blind Lemon Pledge's unique and eclectic place in American Roots Music.

Blues poet and roots music savant from the Bay area, Blind Lemon Pledge (aka James Byfield), spent his lockdown year away from the stage digging deeper into the metaphysical minutiae of songwriting and lyrical exploration at the heart of American music. The prolific writer and recording artist returns with his ninth album, A Satchel Full Of Blues, the expedited follow up to the well-received 2020 release, Goin’ Home; Pledge’s stripped down set of acoustic blues and Americana classics. The collection of a dozen new tracks, delivered as a mostly mellow but not entirely acoustic affair, are an homage to the songwriters, who influenced him since his youth and as he says, “launched his ongoing fascination with the magic synergy between melody and lyrics.” In the liner notes Pledge gives thanks to Gene Autry, Willie Dixon, Randy Newman, Mose Allison and Hoagy Carmichael, a short but expansive list of songwriters that clues you in to the breadth and scope of the musical landscape held within.

The jaunty “Wrong Side Of The Blues” opens the set with bass player Peter Grenell and drummer Juli Moscovitz backing up Pledge’s acoustic guitar and wailing harmonica, as he recounts hard luck of a bluesman’s life. The loping number, “If Beale Street Was A Woman,” speaks of one man’s obsession with the home of the blues and the music that grew up on her streets, delivered supported by a sparse, yet lilting musical accompaniment. Pledge drops some greasy slide guitar leads on the Delta rambler “Black Eyed Susie,” and sings the praises of his lady love on the breezy “Sherri Lynn.” He spells out the trials and tribulations of amour on the country blues “Heart So Cruel” and the sentimental jazz ballad “Blue Heartbreak,” each filled with romantic melodrama. Pledge has a little fun playing out the notion of a school-boy crush on the ragtime number “Teacher, Teacher,” with his tongue firmly in cheek. The dark tale, “I Killed The King Of The Blues,” puts a new spin on the classic blues mythology of selling one’s soul to the devil, accented with melancholy slide guitar and blues harp. The up-tempo “Detour Blues” has a Jimmy Rogers feel and employs that paradoxical form that works so well in the blues, of happily singing about hard times and troubles to cathartic effect.

The album’s lone cover song is a lovely acoustic take on a traditional tune, “Alberta,” accredited to Lead Belly and oft recorded by folk music mavens. Pledge works his Dreadnaught and Dobro guitars with equal measure creating a high lonesome sound on the Americana hymn “Before I Take My Rest.” The final exploration, “Death Don’t Ask Permission,” is a channeling of Son House and Pledge’s namesake Blind Willie Johnson, both Delta Blues progenitors, who famously used the blues pulpit to preach about mortality and the hand of fate with vocal power and emotional intensity.

A Satchel Full Of Blues is yet another intriguing chapter in the musical anthology of Blind Lemon Pledge. ~Rick J Bowen

At some point in every artist’s career they take time to return to the source of their inspiration and dig deeper into that sacred space that gave them the spark to launch a thousand ideas. San Francisco-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Blind Lemon Pledge (AKA James Byfield) has produced seven albums since 2008 that have taken the prolific singer/songwriter on sonic adventures from folk to blues to jazz to the far corners of American Music. For his eighth album, “Goin’ Home,” Pledge invites us to sit with him in the parlor and enjoy some of his favorite songs. The paired-down collection, delivered with just guitar, upright bass and vocals, are an intimate house concert set of classic blues, jazzy pop standards and heartfelt folk songs from a bygone era.

Pledge opens the set with ‘I Feel Like Going Home,’ breathing life into the deep cut from the early catalog of Muddy Waters. He and his longtime bass player, Peter Grenell, set the tone for the album by milking every note for the depth, breath and nuance to be found. Pledge dives deep into the drama of the Delta Blues with his pleading vocals and mournful slide guitar, drawing inspiration for the title of the album.

The duo then takes on the jazzy standard ‘Fever,’ delivering a version that is more like the original recorded by Little Willie John, with the brusque and jagged pace rather than the slinky Rat Pack version made famous by Peggy Lee. He writes a wrong by paying tribute to the late Walter Davis, in covering his emotional slow blues ‘Come Back Baby,’ that Ray Charles erroneously took credit for on his 1954 B side recording. He stays true to the original version of J.J. Cale’s ‘Crazy Mama,’ by employing dexterous slide guitar playing and a soft subtle vocal styling. Pledge lightens the mood by comparing the virtues of his lover with a variety of confectionery delights on the Ragtime Blues, ‘Sugar Rush.’ The sparse arrangement of ‘Somebody Loan Me A Dime’ brings out the jazz elements in the beautiful chords and haunting melody from Fenton Robinson, with Pledge punctuating the bitter sweet tone of the minor key slow blues with a legato solo, acknowledging the late great Duane Allman who played on Boz Scaggs’ famous version.

Blind Lemon Pledge gets even closer to the source with a joyous ramble through ‘Big Road Blues,’ one of the most influential early Mississippi blues songs first recorded by Tommy Johnson in 1928. Grenell swings hard on a great walking bass line for a new rendition of ‘Sweet Celine’ that Pledge previously recorded on his folk album “Backwards Glance,” energizing it with a roaring twenties treatment. Pledge pays tribute to more of his heroes by rearranging the Lonnie Johnson tune ‘It’s Too Late To Cry’ employing the chord changes of the T-Bone Walker classic ‘Stormy Monday.’ An acoustic blues album wouldn’t be complete without a Robert Johnson song, so the duo oblige on an emotional cover of Johnson’s staple ‘Love In Vain.’ While the jaunty country blues, ‘I Know You Rider,’ from the Hot Tuna catalog, pays homage to the psychedelic 60’s and all the bands from his hometown of San Francisco. The tent revival finale ‘Little Black Train,’ sung a cappella as an invitational altar call closes out the set.

In the album liner notes Blind Lemon Pledge dedicates “Goin’ Home,” to all the great blues musicians, whose music he has studied and is part of his life ‘s mission to share it with the world. This fine recording, obviously made with love in his heart, may be his finest work to date.
