Yes indeed!! Here we have another garage blues duo! And once again I am happy because the duo American Relay from Denver, Colorado, produces the kind of garage blues that sounds super dirty and hard.
Alex Hebert on drums and Nick Sullivan on guitar and vocals deliver a debut with primitive, stripped down to the bone blues rock.
They immediately go wild in Bonedry, a filthy blues rocker with filthy cutting slide guitar, distorted vocals and stubbornly ramming drums. Curtain Call is a boogie on speed. Razor-sharp, raging with raw vocals. They just keep on going... and that makes me happy. Compared to them, The White Stripes sounded like good citizens... Nick throws his Jimi Hendrix-inspired riffs into the raw battle in Begin, resulting in a kind of sandpaper blues. The languid blues shuffle Homeland Blues secretly stole riffs from both Born On The Bayou (CCR) and Voodoo Chile (Hendrix).
A piercing slide guitar opens the raw, desolate blues in Trusst . Weekend slowly gets going but soon becomes a rough garage rocker with super-hard riffs. Long Gone is an even filthier-sounding boogie, if possible, in which Nick rages over the strings of his slide like a maniac. Howlin' Wolf's Poor Boy gets a thundering dirty version on this album while Til sounds almost funky. I have rarely heard such a raging version of the Elmore James song Shake Your Money Maker as with this duo. The slide screams in all directions and Nick spits out his vocals. Finally, after all that noise, the duo seems to blow out in Uncompelling Me in a fairly quiet rhythm & blues song for them, which fortunately never sounds "neat".
