Ike Turner - That Kat Sure Could Play!: The Singles 1951-1957 (4 CD)

Ike Turner's life may have been a controversial one, but their can be little doubt of his significant contribution to the blues, rhythm & blues and rock musical worlds. A four CD box, "The Legendary Ike Turner: The Kat Sure Could Play! presents 118 songs (and over 5 hours of music) from singles Turner played on between 1951 to 1957. Some of these recordings include famous recording like "Rocket 88" by Turner and his own band The Kings of Rhythm, and others are backings to recordings by the likes of Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Johnny Ace, Bobby Bland and Elmore James.

There are so many historic recordings here starting with Rocket 88, but also including King's 3 O'Clock Blues, Wolf's How Many More Years, Boyd Gilmore's raucous Rambling On My Mind, and Rosco Gordon's No More Doggin'. There is a terrific delta juke joint band session that produced Drifting Slim's Muddy Waters pastiche Good Morning Baby, and Sunny Blair's house rocket, Step Back Baby. Junior Brooks terrific Gonna Let You Go is a reworking of a Muddy Waters recording with Ike on piano as he is on Elmore's frantic broom dusting on Please Find My Baby. Ike is present on Little Milton's early If You Love Me Baby as well.

Ike also had his own coterie of musicians including Eugene Fox whose Sinner's Dream and the two-part The Dream, are interesting bits of story-telling with Ike's evocative use of tremolo in his guitar noticeable. As The Sly Fox, Eugene Fox had a couple of other gems with his extroverted vocals; Hoo-doo Say (with a solo from Ike) and I'm Tired of Beggin'. Lonnie the Cat's I Ain't Drunk is a choice cover of a Jimmy Liggins tune that Albert Collins made famous. Johnny Wright's The World Is Yours is one of several times Ike adapted lyrics to Guitar Slim's The Things I Used To Do with Wright shouting with considerable vigor as Ike makes effective use of his Fender's whammy bar during his solo.

Some of the latter recordings come from when Turner recorded for Federal and include such gems as Billy Gayles I'm Tore Up, Just One More Time, and Let's Call It A Day; Jackie Brenston's Gonna Wait For My Chance and Clayton Love's She Made My Blood Run Cold and Do You Mean It. Also heard are instrumentals including Cubano Bop and Trail Blazer.

Rosco Gordon was best known for being one of the progenitors of a slightly shambolic, loping style of piano shuffle called "Rosco's Rhythm". The basic elements of this sound were further developed after Jamaican musicians got a hold of 45s Gordon recorded in the early '50s - which were not available to Jamaicans until 1959 - and created ska, which took its name for the sound of this particular shuffle as it sounded being played on an electric guitar (ska-ska-ska).

No less an authority than Chris Blackwell - he was the founder/president of Island Records who produced Bob Marley, the Wailers, and Peter Tosh, to name a few - has cited Gordon's importance to reggae and ska music and championed the sound he helped create. Gordon had originally been a member of the famed Beale Streeters, a Memphis, TN-based group that also featured the considerable talents of Johnny Ace, B.B. King, and Bobby "Blue" Bland, in the late '40s. They were scouted by none other than Ike Turner for Modern Records, who recorded the Beale Streeters' first single in 1951.

Gordon was soon recording sides for Sam Phillips and his Sun Records label. Phillips later sold the master of Gordon's own "Bootin'" to two competing labels, Chess and RPM, both of whom released it as a single. This "mix-up" did not, however, prevent the song from hitting number one on the R&B chart in 1952. The follow-up to "Bootin'", called "No More Doggin'", was the first song to feature the now-familiar shuffle rhythm of Gordon's design, with a strong accent on the off-beat that repeated the oft-monotonous guitar phrasing. Though Gordon had recorded the song in the living room of a friend's home, in fact, the sound was fully developed and unique for its time. Recorded over five years in no less than ten locations, ranging from decent studios to living rooms with dozens of musicians live and overdubbed, No Dark in America represents the last will and testament of one of this country's greatest if obscure songwriters. Issued by Dualtone for Skuntry and produced by Elijah "Lij" Shaw with support from his label partner, Chris King, these 15 songs represent the great Rosco Gordon at a creative peak. Along with Brad Jones and Audley Freed, Ken Coomer makes an appearance on these sides as well. Gordon is widely regarded as the true source of ska reggae's heartbeat, based on the unique rhythmic pattern of his R&B tunes in the 1950s, like "No More Doggin'." His tunes have been recorded by luminaries such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and Jimi Hendrix. The music here ranges form the startling brilliance of the title track -- a whomping R&B anthem written after the fall of the Twin Towers on 9/11 -- to a skittering, off-kilter version of "Night in Rio," the complex stroll and roll of "That's What You Do to Me," the off-key piano orgy of "You Look Bad When You're Naked," and the soul-busting ballad "One More Time." ~Thom Jurek

This originally came out as a 1989 LP on Ace; look, however, for the expanded 2000 Ace CD, as it increases the number of tracks from 15 to 26 with the addition of material by B.B. King, Ike Turner, and Rosco Gordon. All of the songs were recorded in Memphis in the early '50s by the Bihari Brothers, and much of it was released on 45s on their Modern, RPM, and Meteor labels, though some of it wasn't issued for decades. This was two or three years before the ascendance of Memphis rockabilly, and blues/R&B crossover ruled the roost in the city. The CD is thus a rough snapshot of local electric blues just as it began to be recorded more often, with some of the earliest sides by Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Johnny Ace, and the aforementioned King, Turner, and Gordon, as well as the nearly unknown Earl Forest. In comparison to the somewhat more famous early Memphis electric blues released in the early to mid-'50s on Sun, this is a little more sluggish, and more tilted toward barroom piano styles. The songwriting, too, is not as sharp and electric as the best Sun stuff. All that taken into consideration, this is still a noteworthy supplement to those Sun recordings, as a document of the sound of Memphis electric blues -- and, by extension, rock & roll -- in its infancy. The band plays some serious havoc with timekeeping on Parker's chaotic "You're My Angel," which sounds like a drunken after-hours jam; Bland is well on his way to establishing his foggy urban blues delivery on his two singles. Forest is a typical but unremarkable period bluesman; Ace is represented by just one performance, the 1953 ballad "Midnight Hours Journey"; and Turner turns in relatively rare (and competent) vocal performances on his 1952 single. Shambolic - not a word often used to describe musicians, their recordings or their careers but in the case of Rosco Gordon it seems to fit. Certainly his piano stylings are often referred to as shambolic, however his looping piano style and his ability to place an accent on the offbeat helped to form the foundation of bluebeat and ska in Jamaica. Presented here are the A & B sides of every release he made up to 1961, major hits include "Booted", "No More Doggin'", "Saddle The Cow" plus great tracks such as "Just A Little Bit". This is the first time his exciting recordings have been presented in this way. An undeniably original talent whose contributions to the development of popular music cannot underestimated and this collection fully demonstrates that.

Most part of the 1990s, The Coolerators, led by guitar player George Kilby Jr., were Pinetop Perkins backing band. As a teenager, George Kilby was deeply influenced by southern country & rock music, but he also shared the stage with Albert King, Etta James and James Brown. In the mid 1980s Kilby met Pinetop Perkins in Chicago and lived with Perkins' family for some years. After the release of 'Pinetop & Friends', he moved to New York to work with stride pianist Howie Wyeth. Kilby also produced Pinetop's 'Portrait of a Delta Bluesman', which won the W.C. Handy Award, blues Album of the Year. Kilby's third effort with Perkins was 'Live At 85', a red hot live album with features Kilby and a powerhouse horn section. Rosco Gordon is a pioneer of the Memphis blues style. He recorded for Sam Phillips at Sun Records and 'Booted' reached No 1 on the Billboard R&B record chart. In 1962 he gave up music and moved to New York, but after his wife's death in 1984, he returned to performing.

The blues/R&B set opens with the three of the kings of the Blues Elmore, the Wolf and John Lee, though the current indisputable King of the blues B.B. makes a wonderfully low-key appearance later. By the way, the version of House Rent Boogie here has never been released on CD before. We go down home for a couple of cuts from Drifting Slim and Joe Hill Louis, before heading back up town, going way out west with some cool LA sounds from John Watson and Pee Wee Crayton just two of the great guitarists to be found here. Check the lyric on Big Duke's Hey Dr Kinsey never has an academic report on sexual proclivities been put to music with such deep-felt passion. Young Jessie continues the discussion on Don't Happen No More while Lil Greenwood and Helen Humes are one either side of him with clear opinions on the matter also. Of all people Ike Turner cools things out with a fine rockin' instrumental. The set closes with a beautiful soulful performance from Little Johnny Taylor that we have never issued before.

Founded in 1952 by Sam Phillips, who also founded the recording studio Sun Studio at the same time, Sun Records discovered and first recorded such influential musicians as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. Presley's recording contract was eventually sold to RCA Victor Records for $35,000 in 1955 to relieve the financial difficulties that Sun was going through. Prior to those records, Sun Records had concentrated on mainly recording African-American musicians, because Phillips loved rhythm and blues and wanted to bring black music to a white audience. It was Sun record producer and engineer, Jack Clement, who discovered and recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, while owner Sam Phillips was away on a trip to Florida. The original Sun Records logo was designed by John Gale
Parker, Jr., a resident of Memphis and high school classmate of Phillips.

Launched as a subsidiary imprint under the Bihari Brothers' Modern Records umbrella, RPM Records specialized in blues, jump blues, and R&B. The Bihari Brothers (there were four of them, Lester, Julius, Saul, and Joseph Bihari) founded Modern Records in 1954 in Los Angeles as a West Coast R&B and blues label, spinning it off into an independent record empire by adding other imprints, including RPM, Flair, Meteor, and Crown Records (they even launched a Christmas and holiday label, Yuletide Records) before things crashed in the mid-'60s and forced things into bankruptcy, with the Modern umbrella catalog falling to Kent Records, who licensed it to the U.K.'s Ace Records in the mid-'80s, who in turn purchased it outright in the 1990s. This two-disc set, the first volume in a series covering the RPM part of the story, extends from 1950 to 1953, and includes sides by some well-known names like B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, and Ike Turner (who was a longtime talent scout for the Bihari Brothers), but also sides by lesser-known artists like the great Rosco Gordon, with roughly half of these 52 tracks featured in either alternate or previously unreleased versions, all of which makes this a wonderful historical and archival release. /Steve Leggett, AllMusic

Born in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up on Florida street, Gordon was a pioneer of the Memphis Blues style. Gordon used a style of piano-playing known as 'The Rosco rhythm' and made a number of his early recordings for Sam Phillips at Sun Records. This rhythm, where the emphasis is on the off-beats, was an influence on the Jamaican pianist Theophilus Beckford and hence on reggae music as a whole.

"Booted" and "No More Doggin'" were both released in 1952. Phillips sold the master of "Booted" to both RPM and Chess Records and both labels released the track as a single. The RPM release reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B record chart. Chess and the Bihari brothers later settled the conflict, with the Biharis getting exclusive rights to Gordon and Chess signing Howlin' Wolf to an exclusive contract.

Gordon's last single to reach the charts was "Just a Little Bit" (1960). In 1962, he gave up the music industry and moved to Queens, New York with his new wife, where he purchased a partnership in a laundry business. Following his wife's death in 1984, he returned to performing in the New York area.In 2002, he was invited by filmmaker Richard Pearce to be featured as part of a documentary film about several blues musicians returning to Memphis for a special tribute to Sam Phillips in conjunction with

the May 2002 W.C. Handy Awards. Called The Road To Memphis, the documentary aired on PBS television. Six weeks after filming finished, Gordon died of a heart attack at his apartment in Rego Park, Queens. He was 74 years old.

The Sun Sound began when Sam Phillips launched his record company in February of 1952. He named it Sun Records as a sign of his perpetual optimism: a new day and a new beginning. Sam rented a small space at 706 Union Avenue for his own all-purpose studio. The label was launched amid a growing number of independent labels. In a short while Sun gained the reputation throughout Memphis as a label that treated local artists with respect and honesty. Sam provided a non-critical, spontaneous environment that invited creativity and vision.

As a businessman, Phillips was patient and willing to listen to almost anyone who came in off the street to record. Memphis was a happy home to a diverse musical scene: gospel, blues, hillbilly, country, boogie, and western swing. Taking advantage of this range of talent, there were no style limitations at the label. In one form or another Sun recorded them all.

Rosco Gordon was best known for being one of the progenitors of a slightly shambolic, loping style of piano shuffle called "Rosco's Rhythm." The basic elements of this sound were further developed after Jamaican musicians got a hold of 45s Gordon recorded in the early '50s -- which were not available to Jamaicans until 1959 -- and created ska, which took its name for the sound of this particular shuffle as it sounded being played on an electric guitar (ska-ska-ska).

No less an authority than Chris Blackwell -- he was the founder/president of Island Records who produced Bob Marley, the Wailers, and Peter Tosh, to name a few -- has cited Gordon's importance to reggae and ska music and championed the sound he helped create. Gordon had originally been a member of the famed Beale Streeters, a Memphis, TN-based group that also featured the considerable talents of Johnny Ace, B.B. King, and Bobby "Blue" Bland, in the late '40s. They were scouted by none other than Ike Turner for Modern Records, who recorded the Beale Streeters' first single in 1951. Gordon was soon recording sides for Sam Phillips and his Sun Records label. Phillips later sold the master of Gordon's own "Bootin'" to two competing labels, Chess and RPM, both of whom released it as a single. This "mix-up" did not, however, prevent the song from hitting number one on the R&B chart in 1952.

The follow-up to "Bootin'," called "No More Doggin'," was the first song to feature the now-familiar shuffle rhythm of Gordon's design, with a strong accent on the off-beat that repeated the oft-monotonous guitar phrasing. Though Gordon had recorded the song in the living room of a friend's home, in fact, the sound was fully developed and unique for its time. On July 11, 2002, Gordon died of a heart attack at his home in Queens, New York. He was 74. ~bio byBryan Thomas

RPM was a hip and happening label formed in LA, it was one of the several subsidiary labels of Modern Records who were the forerunner of ryhthm and blues. RPM quickly became associated with its biggest name, BB King, and then followed with names such as Lightnin' Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf and Willie Nix. The label was short-lived but this compilation catches RPM in its satisfying prime.

JUMP. . . Yeah, Jump... it usually consisted of a combination of 5 to 10 instruments - Upright String Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, sometimes Horns and of course, a Dynamic Vocalist! These instruments were essential in building the foundation of Jump Blues music, and were used to define the form and feel of the music that we know today as "JUMP".

Who could forget the power and feeling of "Big Joe" Turner, Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Roy Brown, T-Bone Walker and B.B. King. It was a happening' thang. JUMP had it all - it was (and is) able to blend many different musical styles, colors & textures. It is a canvas upon which one is able to paint clear and pure, color with tone. Many, were the times that the great artists from the orchestras of Count Basie and Duke Ellington would sit in on these small combo settings during recording sessions. Surely this was due to their love for the simplicity, purity and clarity of the Jump sound. One artist that was a part of that era is tenor sax player "Big Jay" McNeely, blowing on such songs as "Ain't No Rockin No More" and the bluesy, smokey, "If the Phone Don't Ring". The feeling is still alive, you just can't kill JUMP.

Rockabilly, a mix of Country and Swing, is actually just another variant of Jump. Many of the early 1950's Elvis recordings were a great example of this style. Back then, Tulsa was Jumping' with Bob Wills & his "Texas Playboys" a blend of Swing and Country. This variation used many of the same basic tempos and rythyms that were the basic tenents of jump music. Using the Upright String Bass, Drums, Piano, the Lap Steel Guitar, along with a strong dynamic vocalist, they built just as much a following as the Jump Blues artists did in the rest of the country.

The tradition continues through the artists and instruments of today. Like all art, you can take the original beauty of the form, borrow from it, respect, play, and continue to evolve it, using today's technology to create new variations while still maintaining that great feeling called Jump Blues.

Here is one of the pioneers of the Memphis R&B movement. This man was a huge influence in Jamaica at the beginning of the ska rhythms; he had a loping and relaxed style that fit right into the propensities of early ska artists. He hasn't been popular in the states since "Just a Little Bit," his early-'60s hit, stormed the R&B charts. At this time he married and devoted himself to his wife and growing family. It was only her untimely demise from bone cancer and the growing up of his children that allowed him to get back on the road again (mostly in Europe and Canada). But here he is back in full voice, with the help of Duke Robillard and his band, to reignite the flames that have lain dormant all these years. He either wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs here, showing he has not sat idly by during his hiatus from recording. This is an exceptionally fine effort and kudos must go to Stony Plain for taking the time to make this available for our pleasure. ~Bob Gottlieb
