With long-time collaborator, guitarist, singer/songwriter, husband Chris Carlson, they have travelled and made music across the USA, Canada, Norway, Hong Kong, Japan, and Austria.

The Duffy Bishop Band - Fly The Rocket

Year: 1999
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 73:20
Size: 169,1 MB
Styles: R&B, blues, jazzy blues
Scans: Full

1. Change Your Address (4:09)
2. Rockandaheartbreak (3:18)
3. Wild Women (Don't Have The Blues) (4:26)
4. Day One (4:21)
5. It's A Crime (6:19)

9. Pain (5:29)
10. Patience (5:09)
11. 3X's (6:59)
12. Each Day (5:05)
13. Fly The Rocket (6:26)
14. Blue Lullaby (7:36)

This tight band plays vintage '70s-style R&B with energy and conviction, a staunch mixture of urbanized city blues cross-pollinated with rock & roll, and just a dash of the rural blues that evolved into swing music. This is the horn-driven music prevalent in the small, smoky clubs of the South, music that was about getting dancers out onto the floor to strut their stuff, and as such is slower and more pushing to propel the body on the dance floor. The heartfelt quality of the songs comes shining through off the disc, which stems from the fact that the band, in one aggregation or another, wrote all but one of the songs.

One song that truly leaps out is the tortured "Pain," which was co-written by Duffy Bishop and Eddie Gahr, and sung with the conviction of one who has experienced the depths of the emotions they are singing about. The horn charts here stand as a perfect complement to the pain echoed in the voice. Some of the songs are also written with a playful sense of humor; listen to "Fly the Rocket," and the images drawn up fit perfectly with the cover art's sense of kitsch.

The backup singing by Duffy Bishop is fuller and richer than her lead vocals. Her singing as lead vocalist at times is a bit thin, not enough fullness of voice to match the intensity of the song. Yet she does get this richness on backup vocals, and on a few of the numbers more toward the end of this disc. She even does a great smoky torch number at the end called "Blue Lullaby," that is a great faux ending to the disc (there is an uncredited, moody psychedelic song that provides the real one).

This 14-song, 73-minute disc is good introduction to this band's work. They apply an energy, tightness and focus to their music that serves them well. A fantastic job on the cover art and the liner notes, which are easy to read. /Bob Gottlieb, AllMusic

Fans in the Puget Sound area have had the opportunity to hear and enjoy the music of Bill Engelhart of “Little Bill and the Blue Notes” for more than 50 years and already appreciate what an amazing contribution the man has made to the Pacific Northwest music scene. During his long (and still busy) career, Bill has garnered countless awards, including recognition by the Experience Music Project, as a Northwest music pioneer. With more than 12 albums to his credit, Bill has also given us many wonderful original songs, beginning with his national hit, “I Love An Angel,” and continuing through decades of blues compositions. He has also been a role model and mentor for countless musicians in the Pacific Northwest. One of these - blues trombonist, former “Blue Note,” and close personal friend, Randy Oxford - decided that the time was right to put together a tribute to Little Bill and his music. With Bill’s enthusiastic consent, Randy gathered the resources necessary to create a CD of Little Bill originals, featuring a stellar line-up of musicians, each creating his/her own interpretation of a Little Bill composition. The music is as varied as musicians, who include many of Bill's associates and friends old and new, as well as long-time admirers eager to pay tribute. Big Blues for Little Bill: A Tribute to the Music of Little Bill Engelhart consists of 15 songs, recorded by 62 musicians, including Duffy Bishop, Chris Carlson, Henry Cooper, Merrilee Rush, Patti Allen, Randy Oxford, Alice Stuart, Paul Green, Billy Stapleton, Dick Powell, Mark Whitman, Mark Riley, Dick Powell, Polly O'Keary, Leanne Trevayan, Billy Stoops, Rod Cook, and many more. It's the Blues, people, although some of the songs rock and others swing, shuffle or glide. Together they present a glimpse into the life of the consumate working musician. It's a tribute to Little Bill that this project has resulted so many beautiful performances.

“She’s dangerous!” -- Bo Diddley on Duffy Bishop.
Duffy Bishop is a force of nature. A powerful blues blaster, a sultry soul singer, a presence who connects with her audience in a deeply personal way be it in an intimate club or huge festival.

“Her band went on first and did a tune. Duffy watched from the back of the theater. The band struck up another tune and all of a sudden, this huge beautiful voice came out of nowhere. She was walking up the aisle, mic in hand, tall and glamorous, dressed to the nines, singing and greeting the members of the audience. By the time she got to the stage they were cheering...they were hers and she was theirs.” – Tom D’Antoni, Oregon Music News.

“Sultry and sexual, beautiful and bold. Mannish boy cool, feminine frill or Raggedy-Ann mousey. She Is reckless and flailing, yet graceful in her delivery—full of wanton abandon. Duffy Bishop is a risk-taker.” – Ty Hitzemann, Buko Magazine

Duffy's long anticipated eighth album, Find Your Way Home, was just released this April, 2014.
Based in Portland Oregon, Duffy is in the Cascade Blues Association and Washington Blues Society Hall Of Fame, and a recipient of both organizations' Lifetime Achievement Award. She has won the CBA's Female Vocalist Award so many years in a row that they renamed it the Duffy Bishop Female Vocalist Award.
Duffy started performing professionally in her early teens. Over the course of her four decade career she has shared the stage with many legends including Ruth Brown, John Lee Hooker, Etta James, Gatemouth Brown, Lou Rawls, Bonnie Raitt, Shemekia Copeland, Bo Diddley and Bobby Blue Bland to name a few.
With her long-time collaborator, guitarist and husband Chris Carlson, they have played venues across the USA, Canada, Norway, Japan, Hong Kong, and Austria.
When not touring with their band, Duffy and Chris join Teatro ZinZanni, a circus/ cabaret/tent show in Seattle, San Francisco and Europe. Duffy stars in the lead role as Madame ZinZanni, a role also performed by Thelma Houston, Joan Baez and Ann Wilson.
Duffy played Janis Joplin in a Seattle production of the original play Janis. Sam Andrew, guitarist for Janis' band Big Brother and the Holding Company, was an advisor on the show. Through that connection, Duffy performed with Big Brother and toured Japan with the band.
Duffy performed the role of Dr. Frankenfurter in The Empty Space Theater's production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
“Who Is Duffy Bishop And Why Is She Not World Famous?” a documentary on her life, was released in 2010.
