Legendary guitar virtuoso Harvey Mandel, aka "The Snake", truly one of the most distinctive and innovative musicians, continues to perform throughout the world, captivating audiences with his inventive style of electric guitar playing. A pioneer of modern electric blues from Chicago, Harvey Mandel developed and mastered sustained and controlled feedback, displaying both extroversion and musical virtuosity. He has performed with many blues legends including Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Albert King, and Buddy Guy. He was part of part Canned Heat in 1969 when they played the Woodstock Festival. One of Harvey's most significant session credits was his participation on "Black and Blue", the 1976 LP from the Rolling Stones.

Freddie Roulette on lap steel and vocals, is also from the Chicago blues scene and plays a serious groove. His roots go way back to folks like Charlie Musselwhite, Roy Rogers, Country Joe McDonald, Steve Kimock, Frank Zappa, and many others. Freddie just returned from several weeks performing in Europe. On bass and vocals, Michael Warren has been a favorite of Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band for over 15 years. During that time the band headlined and played with such jammers as Leo Nocentelli, Phish, Rat Dog, String Cheese, Kingfish, and many more.

Drummer, producer, and promoter Michael Borbridge provides the glue that keeps the band moving and grooving in the right direction. Michael has been a band leader for Country Joe McDonald and has produced a number of projects involving Harvey Mandel, Carlos Santana, Elvin Bishop, Melvina Reynolds, Henry Kaiser, Marcy Levy, the Rowan Brothers, and others.

Being the blues-singing daughter of B.B. King has earned Shirley King the title “Daughter of the Blues,” but she is an outstanding singer and performer in her own right and capable of singing any kind of music that comes her way. Just witness her newest full-length album, Blues For A King, which crosses musical genres from blues to rock to soul and back again. Even next to such high wattage guests as Joe Louis Walker, Robben Ford, Junior Wells, Pat Travers & Elvin Bishop, King absolutely shines as she performs spectacular version of the blues classics “Gallows Pole” and “Hoodoo Blues Man” as well as the soul hit “Johnny Porter” (originally by The Temptations) plus two songs by British rock band Traffic, “Can’t Find My Way Home” and “Feelin’ Alright?.” The album closes with a powerful version of Etta James’s unforgettable “At Last,” which signals that, at long last, Shirley King is finally getting the attention and recognition she so richly deserves.

Barry Goldberg & Harvey Mandel - Nothin' But The Blues

Size: 101,6 MB
Time: 40:46
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1995/2016
Styles: Chicago Blues, Blues Rock
Art: Front

01. Big Boss Man (Live) ( 5:12)
02. Low Down Funk (Live) ( 5:14)
03. Lost Love (Live) ( 4:25)
04. I'm Losing You (Live) ( 3:06)
05. You Got Me Cryin' (Live) ( 3:30)
06. Hootchie Kootchie Man (Live) ( 3:31)
07. Cherry Jam (Live) (15:46)

Barry Goldberg was a regular fixture in the white blues firmament of the mid-'60s that seemed to stretch from Chicago to New York. A keyboardist (organ seemed to be his specialty), Barry was an in-demand session man -- he appears with Michael Bloomfield on a Mitch Ryder album, for instance -- along with Al Kooper and his blues-playing contemporary from the original Butterfield band, Mark Naftalin. Goldberg was a member of Charlie Musselwhite's first band, contributing great piano and organ lines to the Stand Back! album (his work on "Cristo Redentor" is moody and introspective, with a strong jazz-inflected feel, while still retaining strong blues roots) and a handful of others throughout the decade. ~Cub Koda

John Mayall - USA Union

Year: 1970

Time: 47:50
Size: 111,9 MB
Styles: Blues, jazzy blues
Scans: Full

1. Nature's Disappearing (5:59)
2. You Must Be Crazy (3:58)
3. Night Flyer (5:36)
4. Off The Road (2:51)

7. Took The Car (4:11)
8. Crying (6:30)
9. My Pretty Girl (4:24)
10. Deep Blue Sea (5:06)

John Mayall's Turning Point band - Jon Mark, Johnny Almond, and Steve Thompson - broke up in June 1970 after a European tour. Mayall then assembled his first all-American band and recorded this album in July. It had more drive than the previous outfit, and Mayall turned to environmentalism on the leadoff track, "Nature's Disappearing." But much of his low-volume, reflective approach remained on an album that was still more of a jazz-pop outing than the blues sessions of his early career. USA Union had the highest U.S. chart peak of his career, hitting #22. But in the U.K., where its title confirmed Mayall's U.S. leanings, the album showed a big dropoff from his usual sales. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

Personnel:
John Mayall - vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano
Harvey Mandel - lead guitar
Larry Taylor - bass guitar
Don Harris - violin

A Great hard rocking piece from the older style of Harvey Mandel. Mainly instrumental - jam format. LOTS and LOTS of guitar! Some very psychedelic, processed sounds. Sounds like an updated version of "The Snake". Last song a short vocal spoof on candy bars that has very suggestive lyrics. It's actually hilarious and well thought out! ~Greg Foley

Although he took blues guitar to uncharted sonic territory in the late '60s with Charlie Musselwhite and on his own solo discs, this '90s return to 12-bar roots was a bit like forcing Mandel to play handcuffed -- he seems constrained by the standard-fare repertoire. Mark Skyer's affected, generic vocals and the title track's trite lyrics don't help. ~Don Forte
