Peter is based in New Orleans and there is a strong bayou feel to this album – he even has Cajun accordionist Sammy Naquin on a couple of items and zydeco accordion star Chubby Carrier on a further two, and the comparisons that have been made with slide guitar ace Sonny Landreth are not far wide of the mark. As if to underline this, Sonny himself guests on the opener, ‘Louisiana Sunrise’. The French influence crops up naturally enough on ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’, and Peter can remind the listener of the great, sadly underrated Bobby Charles (Robert Guidry) on a number like the mellow(ish) ‘Bourbon Street Blue’, which follows on from the raw, churning swamp boogieblues of ‘Spirit Passing By’. The instrumentals ‘Boudin’, the 60s inflected ‘Shreveport Stomp’ and the joyously rocking ‘I-10 Boogie’ (a crash course in Louisiana sounds) all showcase Peter’s guitar mastery. The first time I heard the Peter Novelli Band play, I was on the run. It was a desperate, despairing sprint away from Bourbon Street-once the pride of musical New Orleans, now little more than a Disneyland for grown-ups, with dull, staid cover bands drowning each other out in a noisy face-off. The deep, rich, and heady heritage of New Orleans music, the birthplace of jazz, lies dead there.

Then I heard Peter make his guitar sing. It was Nawlins music with the N spelt in big bold neon lights-bluesy, jazzy, a smattering of rock, some seriously swampy boogie, a bit of swing-all of it liberally spiced with Cajun rhythms, and rounded off with R&B. He and his band were rocking a little joint on Frenchmen Street, where the 19th Century prettiness of the French Quarter melts into the atmospheric and historic streets of Treme.

Peter has been a blues guitarist for more than three decades, and has worked and played with the who's who of cajun, zydeco, blues, and R&B music. He brought all these influences and alliances to play in his colorful debut album. ~Rudraneil Sengupta

Peter's guitar style evolved from the electric blues masters, mixed with his years playing Louisiana roots music in zydeco/cajun bands. This CD was recorded in Baton Rouge and New Orleans with former members of Gatemouth Brown's Gate's Express: David Hyde (bass), David Peters (drums) with guest appearances by other members of Gate's band (Joe Krown on B3, Bobby Henderson on alto sax, Chris Belleau on trombone. Brian Brignac (Sonny Landreth, Wayne Toups) played percussion and drums. Other guests include Dr John, Paul Barrere (Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, etc), Greg "Fingers" Taylor on harmonica, Raful Neal on harmonica, Augie Meyers on Vox organ (Texas Tornados, Sir Douglas Quintet), Olivier Scoazec (Buckwheat Zydeco, Zachary Richard), James Johnson, guitar (Slim Harpo band), David Torkanowsky on B3, Suzanne Leger (frottoir and percussion), Smoky Greenwell, harmonica (WAR), Curtis Coubello (fiddle), Nelson Blanchard on keys.

The CD includes a Tribute to Slim Harpo, two tracks (previously recorded, but unfinished) with members of Harpo's band (the late Raful Neal, James Johnson, Rudy Richard) and New Orleans legend, the late "Big" Johnny Thomassie on drums.
