Here, on an album where he wrote all 10 tracks, Card isn't taking sole credit. Parker Card And The Sideman Syndicate is the eponymous debut of the band Card has fronted for the past two years. As the name implies, some of Memphis' best players have floated through the Syndicate's ranks in those two years, and some of the best of them are on the album as well. The potent horn section of saxophonists Art Edmaiston and Tom Link and trumpeter Scott Thompson team up on a couple of tracks. And on the opening number, "Rescue Me," local guitar gods Shawn Lane and Eric Gales swap leads. It's a testament to Card's abilities as a band leader and writer that these two flash-prone players reign it in and deliver tasteful solos that complement the rest of this fine soul album. The MGs would be proud.
Stations Of The Heart: A bluesy ballad and a true story about the girl who got away and married someone else. World class solo by Shawn Lane.
